Robert Lloyd Grant
GRANT, Robert Lloyd— Age 48, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on January 27, 2006, at home, from the ravages of 13 years on renal dialysis. He was born in Encino, California, on December 23, 1957, to Lloyd Willard and Darlene (Adair) Grant. Soon after, the family relocated to the Grant homestead outside of Broadus, Montana. Before finishing elementary school he was proficient with his own drum set, snow skis, dirt bike, and car, winning competitions with each. By high school he was performing in school and adult country and rock & roll bands throughout the county, including his own, “The Bald Beaver Band.” While at Miles College earning an Electronics Certificate, Bob’s next band performed every weekend as a tavern’s house band. They also opened for some well-known country bands performing at Miles City venues and other places, such as military bases in Montana and nearby states. At age 24, he married Nancy Sampson, adopting her ten-month-old daughter, Cassa, and then adding their son, Jesse Lloyd to the family in 1982. This first marriage didn’t last long, however, and he soon met his second wife-to-be, Jane, also a “local girl.” They remained married about a dozen years, nearly all of them in the Mother Lode area of California, where they relocated when Bob was 30 years old. In these Gold Hills of California, he became a mineralogist for a syndicated corporation gold mine. Bob was in his element, being a geology and gemstone fancier, and planned to remain in this career until his retirement in 2022—though he frequently said he “really wanted to retire in [his] 30’s.” The saying “Be careful what you wish for” was something he frequently quoted after turning 35, because 3 days before that birthday his kidneys suddenly and completely failed. Within hours he was having his first dialysis-access implant surgery and 4-hour, 3-times-weekly dialysis treatment. Within two weeks his first two accesses had failed and been replaced, and his only kidney transplant surgeries had been done--and quickly undone after the “new” kidney exploded from being too old before implantation, which nearly fatally poisoned his body. Over the years, his accesses died or became dangerously infected and had to be remade in new sites. Veins were taken from legs and ankle to create new accesses, and the new ones frequently became clogged and required periodic reaming. Bob was down to his last possible access site, and it had been used for a few years already. Eventually came heart failure—the clogging, with the resultant 6 heart attacks over his final 5 years, and then congestive heart failure—and eventually there was not enough viable tissue left for surgeons to work with. All his other organs were also damaged and enlarged. Bob was hospitalized 7 times in 7 months in 2004, causing a weight loss of nearly 70 lbs., and then 3 more times toward the end of 2005, with the loss of more than 10 further pounds. Bob had divorced Jane in 1997 and moved down into the San Joaquin Valley below the Gold Hills, to live in Stockton, California. There Bob met his third partner, Kathlene, and a couple of years later they found Roseburg, moving here in the autumn of 2002. One of Bob’s first purchases here was a new drum set, as he had two local bands vying for his performing skills. He became drummer for Preston Wills’ “Rural Route 4,” performing at Eagles, Moose and Elks Lodges and VFW halls around the county and in Springfield, Oregon, for the eighteen months until Bob became too ill to do so. He composed and sang, and became known for his thrilling “Wipeout!” Classic cars were his second love, owning and trading a few dozen of them throughout his life. (It was the sight of them, not pretty girls, that turned his head). His other interests included roses, his many dogs, books, movies, trivia, rock and roll, guns, photography, playing cards, watching TV, taking drives, and reading the weekly Broadus, MT, newspaper. Roseburg Funeral Alternatives is handling the cremation; a memorial service will be held for Bob, by his daughter and son, in Broadus this June. Kathlene (a.k.a. Katie and KatSue) would take great pleasure in hearing from anyone who cares to write to her at P.O. Box 2305, Roseburg, Oregon.
