Nancy Ellen Dixon
DIXON, Nancy Ellen — Was born on January 7, 1952 to Earl and Eleanor Dixon. She grew up with two brothers, Earl and Tommy and two sisters, Shirley and Gloria. On April 7, 1970, she married James Patrick Lavin, Jr. and they raised four children, Rainee Anne; Rebecca Sue; Roxanna Kathleen; and James Patrick, III. Nancy loved children and experienced great joy with her seven grandchildren, Riley James Thomas Lavin Williams; Molly Anne Lavin Williams; Samantha Rebecca Cyr; Kolby Emery Lavin Williams; Hanna Elizabeth Cyr; Sabastian Blaine Lavin; and Quinn Patrick Lavin. Nancy passed away on March 20, 2006, from cancer, while in the care of her loving family and friends (including her four dogs and two cats). A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Easter Sunday for the immediate family.

Beverly Inez Moore
MOORE, Beverly Inez — A memorial service for Beverly Inez Moore, age 80, of North Bend, Oregon, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2006, at the North Bend Masonic Lodge, 2002 Union Ave., in North Bend. Worthy Matron Nancy Diaz, of North Bend Eastern Star will officiate. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 15, 2006, at North Bend Chapel, 2014 McPherson Ave. Private interment will be at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay, Oregon. Beverly was born on December 29, 1925, in Harrison, Arkansas, the last of five children of Walter Thomas and Lola Inez Williford Slagle. She passed away on June 11, 2006, in Coos Bay. Learning was a life-long love for Beverly or “Babe” as family called her. She attended Eagle Heights Elementary School and Harrison High School through her sophomore year. On September 5, 1942, she married her sweetheart, Clyde James Moore, at the Harrison Baptist Church. Beverly’s sister, Shirley and her husband, Narval Akin, were their attendants. In the winter of 1942, Beverly and Clyde moved to Oakland, California, where they lived while Clyde worked in the war effort. During this time, their first child, Lola Inez, was born. In September 1947, they moved to North Bend. There, their second daughter, Susan Carol, was born. In 1949, they bought a tiny home on Lombard Street. Over the years, they more than doubled its size with Beverly working at Clyde’s side. They lived in this home until Beverly’s health required her to move to a care facility. Beverly went to work when both of her children were of school age. She worked at Roosevelt Junior High and North Bend Junior High as a cook. This was in the days when school cooks baked whole turkeys and dressing with real mashed potatoes and homemade rolls. When her girls left for college, Beverly studied and took her GED to get her high school diploma. After that, she attended classes at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay while working full time. She graduated from Southwestern Oregon in June 1973 with an Associate Degree in Science. With this degree, she worked in numerous hospitals in Coos County. She worked as the site coordinator for the Senior Nutrition Program for Coos and Curry Counties until her retirement. A highlight of this job was meeting and entertaining First Lady Rosalynn Carter at the senior facility. Beverly was interested in everything in her world. She loved music, had a nice singing voice and played the organ and guitar. Her siblings also sang and played at least two instruments. Special interests included gardening, bingo, fishing, hunting, cooking and camping. She always believed there was enough food for “one more” and enough beds for “one more.” She supported her community by participating in the Parent-Teacher Association, the Girl Scouts, March of Dimes and Easter Seals. She always supported the North Bend schools and worked diligently to get bus service for all students in the district. Beverly is survived by her husband of 63 years, Clyde; daughters, Lola Short and her husband, Lance, of Winchester, Oregon; and Sue Johnson of Roseburg, Oregon; grandsons, Brent Short and his wife, Heather, and their children, Elijah, Riley and Kya; Ryan Short and his wife Shannon, and their children, Mackenzie and Ryland, all of Winchester; Mark Johnson and his wife, Sophanna and their children, Tyler and Alexis of Beaverton, Oregon; and sisters-in-law, Zella Phillips of Harrison and Stella Moore of Rogers, Arkansas. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Erma Sisco; Dana and husband, Smith Bradley; Shirley and husband, Earl South; brothers, Joseph Doctor “J.D.” Slagle and Dennis Slagle and wife Elinor; and two nephews, Arlis Akin and Kenneth Slagle. Arrangements are under the direction of North Bend Chapel, (541) 756-0440.

Lawrence Junior Jacque “Larry”
JACQUE, Lawrence Junior — Age 75, of Roseburg, Oregon passed away before his time on Monday, June 12, 2006, at home. He was surrounded by his family who loved and cared for him. He was born on March 15, 1931, in Belfield, North Dakota, the son of Lawrence Nicholas Jacque and Blanch Conklin Jacque. Larry attended elementary and middle school in Belfield. He moved with his mother and siblings to Spokane, Washington, where he graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1949. Larry served his country in the United States Navy from 1949 to 1953 with his most significant duty being at the Fleet Post Office. After an honorable discharge from the US Navy he attended the State College of Washington at Pullman, graduating in 1956 with a BA degree in Hotel Administration after only 3 years of college, where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Larry managed and owned several restaurant/bar establishments in his working career with his last, before he retired, being “The Friendly” in Roseburg where the name meant a free breakfast if you needed it. He was a “wheeler dealer” in real estate, having many rentals in town. He was a member of the Roseburg Moose Lodge 1037 and a life member of the Winston VFW Post 9745. After retirement, Larry loved his garden, growing many vegetables, including an eight-foot tomato tree. He enjoyed camping with his wife and friends in his RV and traveling to warm spots in America, as he enjoyed a temperature above 80 degrees. He loved his music, especially Hank Williams and Patsy Cline, though his favorite songs were, “It’s Hard to be Humble” and “You are My Sunshine.” Larry is survived by his wife, Martha; sons, Michael Jacque of Rancho Cucamonga, California; John Jacque and wife, Mary of Eugene, Oregon; Dale Sanford and wife, Christy of Roseburg; daughters, Jessica and husband, John Quinlan of Charleston, Oregon; Dustina and husband, Mike Coleman of North Bend, Oregon and Aimee Wilhite of Roseburg. Larry had a special place in his heart for his ten grandchildren, Lauren Michael, Nicholas Lawrence, Cherié Renee, Lila Marie, Sara Renee, Erik Victor, Jennifer Marie, Ryan Parker, Paul Wesley and Thomas James. He is also survived by his siblings, Robert of Kennewick, Washington; Art and Bill of Fargo, North Dakota and Ruthie Rinker of Spokane. Larry also leaves behind many friends and drinking buddies. Larry’s special cats Tigger and Junior will miss his lap. Larry was preceded in death by his parents, and his loving step-father, Ronnie Rinker. Calling hours will be on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses, 965 West Harvard Blvd in Roseburg. Graveside services will be on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at 11a.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens, 1056 NW Hicks St. Roseburg. Pallbearers will be his wife and children. The Roseburg branch of the Army National Guard will provide the Honor Guard. All of Larry’s friends are invited.

Raymond George Sommerfeld
SOMMERFELD, Raymond George — Age 64, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2006. Raymond was born on April 2, 1942, in Clarksfork, Idaho. He is survived by his wife, Judith Kreick of Myrtle Creek; sons, James Sommerfeld of Portland, Oregon; Michael and wife, Darla Sommerfeld of Nampa, Idaho; daughter, Jane Gaston of Veneta, Oregon; brothers, Bob Sommerfeld of Myrtle Creek and Don Sommerfeld of Coos Bay, Oregon; sister, Sylvia Harvey of Coos Bay. He is preceded in death by his parents, Friel and Edith Sommerfeld and grandson, Bryan Gaston. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2006, at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m., at Millsite Park in Myrtle Creek. Hebert J. Stevens Jr.
STEVENS, Hebert J. Jr.—passed away at his home on June 12, 2006. He was born on October 16, 1934, in Portola, California, to Herbert and Violet Stevens. He graduated from high school in Westwood, California and served four years in the Navy. When he was discharged from the Navy he attended Oregon State University. He later married Kay Jefferies. Herbert worked for U.S. Plywood and Champion International for 34 years. When Champion closed he worked for Beaver State in the summer and Oregon Department of Transportation in the winter. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and spend time with his many friends. He married his wife Elsie in 1972. He was preceded in death by his mother, father and grandparents who helped raise him. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; step-mother, Ree; brother, Don; daughter, Karrie of Republic, Washington; daughter, Michelle and her husband, Leon Dozhier of Kamaih, Idaho; son, Craig and his wife, Kim of Glide, Oregon; step-son, Wayne Amos and his wife, Ila of Klamath Falls, Oregon; step-son, Layne Amos and his wife, Kalia of Sutherlin, Oregon; granddaughters, Alisha and Erin; step-granddaughters, Kalia, Sara, Amber, and Mindy; step-grandsons, Johnathan, Dustin and Josh and many great friends. We want to thank our many neighbors and friends for all their support and kindness. Many thanks to Kathleen, Sally and the great people of the Umpqua Community Health Clinic, Dr. Ottenhiemer; Dr. Hashem; and all the wonderful people of Mercy Hospice. Doris Violet Barker
Barker, Doris Violet — Age 95, passed away peacefully at Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence, Oregon. Doris was born in Stites, Idaho, one of three children born to James and Molly Howard. In 1913 at age 2 she moved to the Roseburg area. Doris and Harold lived in Glide for 60 years. There she attended school. In 1929 Doris graduated from Roseburg High School. On December 23, 1934 in Roseburg, Doris married the love of her life, Harold F. Barker. Together they worked a large ranch off Buckhorn Road {now the 7 Springs Ranch} in Glide, these were the best years of Doris’ life. She and Harold raised two children, Bill and Norma. They enjoyed years of fishing, camping, hunting. Doris was a wonderful homemaker and all around great mother and housewife. She loved canning, gardening and most of all, devoting and spending time with her family. She was affiliated with a local women’s organization. She is preceded in death by her parents; James and Molly Howard, husband; Harold F. Barker, brothers; Milo Howard and Milford Howard. Doris is survived by her son Bill Barker and his wife Louise of Corvallis, OR., daughter; Norma McKay and her husband Zane of Florence, OR. 4 grandchildren; Katy and Husband Mitch Melcher, Karin Barker, Brian Wicks, Elizabeth and her Husband Jason Parks and 3 great-grandchildren; Brandon Hays, Cameron Parks and Preston Johnson. Graveside services will be held Tuesday June 20, 2006 at 11:30 am at the Oak Creek Cemetery. Mike Miller with officiate. Wilson’s Chapel of the Rose’s is in charge of the services.

Alice F. Mitchell
Mitchell, Alice F. — Beloved mother, grandmother and friend to many, passed away on June 3, 2006 in her home in Riddle, surrounded by her family. Mom was born on February 4, 1949 to Arthur Yohn and Lucille Zemlicka in Palmer, Alaska. Known to many as “Crazy Alice” with her loud, contagious laugh, she worked as a hair dresser for 36 years, 35 of those years she solely owned and operated the Canyonville Beauty Shop in Canyonville, Oregon. She had an impeccable work ethic that was admired by all and was never shy to go out of her way to help people. Alice was involved in many community events, such as the annual “Pioneer Days.” A few of the things that she enjoyed doing were dancing, singing in the community choir, working with stained glass and taking spontaneous road trips to wherever she felt like driving that day. She loved the coast and Diamond Lake. In her younger days, she enjoyed jeep racing, snow skiing and many other adventures. She especially loved the Christmas season with all its decorations and family traditions. Our beautiful mother will be greatly missed by all that knew her. She is survived by her son, Eugene D. Mitchell and her grandson Tyler D. Mitchell of Florence, Montana; her son Marcus M. Mitchell and his wife, Aysha of Las Vegas, Nevada; and her brother, Wilbur Behrens of Lake View Terrace, California. There will be a tree dedication in honor of Alice at 10:00 am and a “Celebration of Life” at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at Pioneer Park in Canyonville, Oregon. A reception for family and friends will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to her name at Umpqua Bank.

Margaret Mary (Meyers) Towner
TOWNER, Margaret Mary— Age 79, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Friday, July 1, 2005. She was born on September 21, 1925, in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Towner and her son, William. She was the loving and devoted mother of Catherine, Kevin, Emily and Miles. She also leaves five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Margaret was very active in her church and the Umpqua Valley Republican Women. A Rosary Service will be held on Saturday, July 2, 2005, at 8 a.m. at Taylor's Family Chapel. She will be interred at the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Sacramento, California. In lieu of flowers, you may send donations in her name to the Mercy House, P.O. Box 569 Roseburg, Oregon 97470.

Martha Claire Plannette
PLANNETTE, Martha Claire — Claire Plannette, of Central Point, Oregon, formerly of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on June 29, 2005, at a Medford, Oregon, hospital. A graveside memorial service will be held at the Roseburg National Cemetery on July 7, 2005, at 2 p.m. Claire was born on August 8, 1917, in Hanford, California, to Kenneth S. and Esther Claire (Miller) Battelle. She and her husband had lived in Sutherlin for seven years. She had her own cleaning business in Santa Barbara, California, for thirty years before moving to Oregon. Memorial contributions may be made, in lieu of flowers, to the Roseburg Humane Society. Claire was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing. She is survived by her niece, Jan and her husband, Paul Warney of Hollister, California; nephews, Bert and his wife, Rosemarie Plannette of Central Point; David and his wife, Carol Plannette, of Camarillo, California. Jack D. Steele
STEELE, Jack Dorman — Age 82, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on June 29, 2005, at home. He was born on September 13, 1922, in Randal, Kansas, the son of J. Dorman and Edith Blanche (Carlton) Steele. He was raised and educated in Kansas. Jack and his father moved to California during W.W. II and worked as welders in the shipyards for the war effort. During that time he learned to fly, but because of the prohibition of private planes on the coast, he took his training in Reno, Nevada. He was united in marriage to Evelyn McKim on February 16, 1957, in Carson City, Nevada. They spent their first years in San Francisco, California. Jack worked for many years as a welder. He and Evelyn moved to Oregon in the 1980’s, settling in Grants Pass, Oregon. In 1995, they moved to the Winston and Roseburg area, which has been home since. He enjoyed gardening and learned to be a good cow milker. Jack leaves his wife of over 48 years, Evelyn Steele of Roseburg; a daughter, Denise Steele Williams of Vallejo, California; two brothers, Richard Steele and his wife, Peggy of Oak Harbor, Washington; and Ralph Steele and his wife, Joan of Cameron Park, California. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael Dorman Steele and two brothers, Orville and William. Private interment will be held at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Oakland, Oregon. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

‘Jackie’ Alyne Hendricks
HENDRICKS, Jacquita “Jackie” Alyne — Age 78, passed away at a local nursing center in Roseburg, Oregon., on Monday June 12, 2006. Jackie was born on February 10, 1928, in Milburn, Oklahoma. She was the oldest of seven children, born to Omer and Jewel Goodman. In 1944, at the age 16, she moved to Ventura County California and attended high school at Moorpark, California She and her first husband, Don Williams had two children Steven and Donna, they operated the Apricot Ranch at Peach Hill in Moorpark and operated Ventura Gun Club at Montalvo, California, where she became an expert marksman at clay target shooting. She enjoyed fishing and hunting but most of all was family oriented and devoted a great deal of time to family. She was an outdoor person, loved horseback riding and ranch work, gardening etc. In 1971, she married Richard Hendricks and continued ranch life in the Moorpark area, upon retirement, she and Richard moved to the Winston, Oregon, area in 1981 and lived the rest of her life there. She was a member of the Olalla Arrow Club and had many friends. She is survived by husband, Richard; son, Steven Williams of Ozark, Alabama; daughter, Donna of Camarillo, California; sister, Weva Martin of Santa Paula, California; brother, LeRoy Goodman of Somis, California; brother, Buddy Goodman of Coalinga, California; step-daughters, Rebecca Preskitt of Ellerslie Georgia & Penny Coffey of Monticello, Georgia; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at Roseburg, Memorial Cemetery Pavilion on Monday, July 10, 2006, at 10 a.m.

Robert Colman Waddle
WADDLE, Robert ‘Colman’ age 63 of Roseburg, Oregon was summoned to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 24, 2006. He was born November 19, 1942, in Taft, California, son of Louis Colman and Juanita (Mitchell) Waddle. After high school he spent time in the marines as a helicopter mechanic. He retired from the Umpqua National Forest in 1998 after 30 years; including his last several years as Union President. Colman had a love for cars and one of his greatest joys was the completion of Green Community Auto Repair, which he owned and operated. The most important things in his life were his family and his faith in the Lord. He was a generous, loving and caring man that had a smile that was contagious. Colman was a very active member of the Vine Street Baptist Church. Colman will be deeply missed by the many family and friends that new and loved him. He is survived by his mother Juanita Waddle of Roseburg, sisters Kathy Nielsen of Roseburg and Carol Stringer of Arizona, brother Mike Waddle of Roseburg, daughters Wendy Feigel and her husband, Derek of Roseburg, Becki Mendenhall and her husband, Joel of Roseburg and Bonnie Dreier of Salem, Oregon and grandchildren Sterling, Cali, Tyler, Lauren, Caleb, Kenna and Natalie. His father preceded him in death. A celebration of Colman’s life will take place at the Vine Street Baptist Church on Thursday, June 29, 2006 at 11:00 AM. Officiating will be Pastor Mike Holleman. Family and friends may come pay their final respects on Wednesday, June 28, 2006 between 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at Taylor’s Family Chapel. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Vine Street Baptist Church in Mr. Waddle’s memory at 2152 NE Vine Street, Roseburg, OR 97470.

Dan Moody Baskin
BASKIN, Dan Moody — Age 79, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on June 24, 2006. He was born on August 15, 1926, in Spencerville, Oklahoma, to Austin and Amy (Jones) Baskin. He grew up in Oklahoma and served in the Army in 1945 to 1946. After moving to Oregon, Dan met the love of his life, Shirley Hall, in 1953. Together they moved back to Oklahoma where they started their family. They returned to Oregon in 1966 and lived in the Sutherlin and Oakland area ever since. Dan retired from Roseburg Forest Products after almost 20 years. He loved fishing, hunting, working in his garden, especially tending his flowers. Spending time with family and friends was very special to him. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Sutherlin; five daughters, Donna Montgomery and her husband, Quince of Sutherlin; Bonnie Coleman and her husband, Roger of Blocksburg, California; Tammy Campos and her husband, Dan of Merced, California; Sandy Baskin and her boyfriend, Brad Bratton; Tommy Gore, all of Sutherlin; eleven grandchildren, Shannon Noffsinger; Monty Montgomery; Roger, Stacy and Amanda Coleman; Danielle and Mathew Baskin; Kyle and Adriana Campos; Chris and Teshia Gore; one great-grandchild, Nichole Noffsinger; two brothers, Delbert Baskin of Roseburg; Don Baskin of Antlers, Oklahoma; two sisters, Dorothy Jackson and Ollie B. Hawkins, both of Sawyer, Oklahoma, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter; two infant sons; and younger brother, John. A memorial service will be held at the Calapooia Free Methodist Church, 333 Church Rd., Sutherlin, on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at 1 p.m. Pastor Christopher Black will officiate.
