Seymour Charles Black Jr.
BLACK, Seymour Charles Jr. — Was born in Bakersfield, California, on March 2, 1931, to Marie Whiteford Black and Seymour C. Black, and passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2006. He was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather who raised him, Marie and Joe Etzkorn; his sister, Pat Mueller, and a grandson, Sean Ardilla. Memorial service is being held at the Myrtle Creek Elks Lodge on Friday, June 30, 2006, at 1 p.m. He leaves behind his wife, Gail who he married in 1974; two children, Barbara Ann Black Ardilla and husband, David and Seymour Charles Black III and wife, Jan . He has four grandchildren, one of whom preceded him in death, and nine great-grandchildren. Chuck entered the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 serving during the Korean Conflict and received numerous service awards. He was honorably discharged after having served 9 1/2 years on active military duty. Upon discharge from the Military service he entered law enforcement, and spent 25 years on the Coronado, California, Police Department where he rose from the rank of patrolman to retire as a lieutenant in 1982. After retirement he chose to relocate to a quieter community and moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon, in 1985. Upon his move to the Myrtle Creek area he became very active in the Community, as a member of the American Legion, a past president and was a board member of the Umpqua Youth, Past president of AARP Chapter 689. He was a Myrtle Creek Lions member holding numerous chairmanships and offices including President. Volunteer for the sight and hearing organ donor program for transport of cornea for transplant purposes, and was an organ donor upon his death. Joining the Elks in 1985, he has been on nearly all of the Lodge Committees at one time or another. He held the position of treasurer and has held several chair offices becoming the ER in 1988 until 1989. In 1992, he was appointed as District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler. In 1995, he took the position as Elks National Veterans Service Committee Representative for the Roseburg V.A. Medical Center and had continued until his passing. In 1999, he ran for and was elected as Southwest District Vice President and has proceeded through the Chairs to this year of being installed as the Oregon State Elks Association President. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his name to the Elks National Foundation.

Leona Michalek
MICHALEK, Leona Janet (Salmonson) — Was born on July 3, 1922, at Chokio, Minnesota, of Welsh-Scotch-Irish parentage of her mother, Laura, and her father, the son of Swedish Immigrant, Per Salmonson. She passed away on Monday, June 5, 2006, of Pancreatic cancer at home with her son, Tom and husband, Louis at her side. Out of high school, Leona entered a cadet-nursing program at Peabody Hospital in Webster, South Dakota where she met her husband to be, a Pharmacy Apprentice. After coming west to work at Sutter Hospital in San Francisco, California, she went into service as an Army Nurse. She saw duty on Leyte in the Philippines and in occupied Japan. At the end of WWII, she married Dr. Louis F. Michalek in 1946, who was in medical school at the University of Washington. She worked in Seattle hospitals staying fully occupied to help fund his medical education as well as starting a family. They went to the twin Cities for his hospital training where she continued as a nurse to support their growing family. Soon the U.S. was involved in the Korean Conflict and her husband had to serve in the Army Medical Corps. That service ended in 1954 and the family went west again where he opened a practice in Roseburg, Oregon. She was his first office nurse and continued to fill in as needed. Leona put roots down and involved herself with her children’s school, scouts, Faith Lutheran Church activities, especially Smorgasbord times. She did volunteer nursing at the Roseburg High School, the YMCA summer camp and with the Red Cross blood program during the Roseburg blast disaster. She was an excellent Scandinavian cook and enjoyed entertaining, Bible study, camping, traveling, and especially an annual sojourn to Costa Rica, and often to her beloved cabin on Tenmile Lake, where she cooked for crowds of friends and relatives. She hosted foreign students at her home continually from 1966 to the time of her death. She was the most amiable, helpful, sharing person, and kept the high moral ground for her family. She is survived by her husband of sixty years, Dr. Louis Michalek; as well as her three sons, Tom and Bill of Roseburg; and Jim of Corvallis, Oregon. She also leaves a brother, Kenneth of Roseburg, and her sister, Marion of Torrance, California; grandchildren, Kristin and Alison of Roseburg; Dustin of Houston, Texas, and Thea of Corvallis; cousins include, Dori and Emily of St. Paul, Minnesota, plus numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a younger sister, Virginia. A Memorial Service will be held at the Faith Lutheran Church on July 8, 2006, at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Wally Gustav. A reception will follow the services. Interment will be at the Roseburg National Veterans Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Kittelson Scholarship Fund at the Faith Lutheran Church, Douglas Home Care Hospice, or the American Red Cross, Roseburg chapter. Arrangements are under the direction of Taylor’s Family Chapel.

Jerome Talbot Swafford
SWAFFORD, Jerome Talbot — Age 75, of Days Creek, Oregon, passed away at his home on June 21, 2006, after a long battle with cancer. Jerry was born on June 21,1931, in Mancelona, Michigan, to Norman and Lenore Swafford. After living in various places throughout the country, the Swafford family finally settled near Hood River, Oregon. After graduating from Hood River High School, Jerry joined the U.S. Navy, in which he served during the Korean War. After his duty in the U.S. Navy, Jerry worked for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife in hatchery services for 31 years, retiring in 1989. Jerry’s love of the outdoors was immense. He could be found either fishing on the water near his beloved Bandon, Oregon, or anywhere in the mountains. Jerry is survived by son Sergeant First Class , Steven Swafford of Annville, Pennsylvania; and daughter, Karma Swafford of Portland, Oregon. As well as his sister, Jo Shay and husband, Rod of Walla Walla, Washington; Patricia Nichols and husband, Nick of Lake Oswego, Oregon; brothers, Keith Swafford and wife, Freeda of Richland, Oregon; David Swafford and wife, Judy of Prineville, Oregon; as well as many nieces and nephews. Jerry is preceded in death by his sister, Joyce; brother, Roger; and his late wife, Kay. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Crossroads Christian Fellowship in Days Creek, Oregon, at 1 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of MYRTLE CREEK FAMILY FUNERAL HOME. 541-863-5122.

R. Kim Peters
PETERS, R. Kim — Age 59, of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2006, at a medical center in North Carolina. He was born on April 23, 1947, in Champaign, Illinois, and was owner of Half Penny’ s Ice Cream Parlor in II Wachovia Building for 16 years, and was a member of the Charlotte Parks and Recreation Department working at Jetton Park, Freedom Park, Ramsey Creek Park and Mallard Creek Park. A service to celebrate the life of R. Kim Peters will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, July 1, 2006, at Waterfront Hall of Jetton Park in Cornelius, North Carolina, with reception to follow. Kim was the husband of 26 years to Penny Meals Peters; father to sons, Jamie Peters and wife, Maija of Charlotte; Cory Peters and wife, Leslie of Davidson; grandfather, to Kjell Peters and Cade Peters; son-in -law, to Melvin and Vickey Meals of Charlotte; brother and brother-in-law, of Danny and Heather Meals of Sutherlin, Oregon; uncle, to Chelsea, Kyle and Eric; Companion to his best friends, Mabel, Maynard and Mattie. Margaret Holmes
HOLMES, Margaret — Age 94, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Friday, June 23, 2006, at her home. She was born Margaret Alice Price on January 23, 1912, in Camden, New Jersey, to Charles and Margaret (Hughes) Price. As a young girl, Margaret moved to Los Angeles, California. She graduated from Garfield High School in 1929. In 1938, Margaret married Vernon Holmes at St. Alfonse Catholic Church in East Los Angeles. Margaret moved to Roseburg when she came to visit her daughter, Marilyn in June of 2001, she liked the area so much she decided to move from Redland, California. Margaret worked as a secretary at St. Alfonse Catholic Church in Los Angeles and at St. Elizabeth Seton in Roland Heights, California. She is a member of the Garfield High School Aumni; she served as Legislative Director of the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union, she also served as their Treasurer for 25 years. Margaret belonged to the Union Pacific Jr. Old Timers Club and the Sacred Heart of Mary Guild in Montebello, California. Margaret was a member of the Catholic Daughters and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Roseburg. She sang in the choir in every church she attended. Margaret enjoyed music and had a special talent playing the piano. She was a world traveler. Margaret is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Hassier and her husband, Jim of Roseburg; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and a lot of close friends who called her aunt or grandma Peggy. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon who passed away on March 9, 1970. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. o, on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Long and Shukle Memorial Chapel. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be read at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:10 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Margaret Holmes Scholarship Fund, Garfield High School, Los Angles. Long and Shukle Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

PRICE, John ‘Jack’ C. — Age 90, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on July 14, 2006. Services will be held on July 20,2006, at 1 p.m. at Wilson’s Chapel Of the Roses. A detailed obituary will run in the Tuesday edition of The News Review

Grigsby, Dain Alexander — Age 21, of Sutherlin, Oregon, passed away on July 7, 2006. He was born on August 24, 1984, In Springfield, Oregon, to Michael and Jeanne (Blodgett) Grigsby. Dain attended schools in Sutherlin and Roseburg, Oregon. Dain is survived by his mother, Jeanne Grigsby of Sutherlin; his father, Michael Grigsby and wife, Julie of Sunriver, Oregon; brother, Christopher Grigsby; and half brother, Devon Grigsby of Sutherlin; half-sister and half-brother, Jody and Jerome Grigsby of Wisconsin; half-brother, Daniel Grigsby of Sunriver; step-sister, Deanna Mines and husband, Eric of Sunriver; grandparents, Robert and Marilyn Blodgett of Sutherlin; grandparents, Micki and Jim Pichette of Coos Bay, Oregon; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and special friend Rebecca Moore. Dain was preceded in death by grandfather, Donald Grigsby. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006, at 2 p.m., at The United Methodist Church, 181 E Second Street, Sutherlin, Oregon. Darlene, Mae Blodgett
Blodgett, Darlene Mae — Age 62, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on, Wednesday, July 12, 2006 at her home. She was born August 10, 1943 in Long Beach, California, daughter of John Wesley Franklin and Eleanor Mae (Huot) Marshall; where she was raised and educated. Darlene was an animal lover and had worked as a veterinarian technician in Long Beach. She later worked as a phlebotomist in a Palm Springs, California hospital. Darlene was united in marriage to Richard Blodgett on May 3, 1985 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They moved to Roseburg five years ago from La Quinta, California. She is survived by her husband of over 21 years, Richard of Roseburg; children, Wendy Sue Allen of Colorado; Cindy Odea of New Hampshire; Richard Mark Blodgett of Washington; and Randall Paul Blodgett of California. She also leaves a sister, Marlene Riska and her husband Jack of Indian Wells, California; as well as several grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death. Private family services will be held.

Sue Bird
BIRD, Sue — Age 69, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on July 1, 2006. Sue was born in Manfield, Louisiana, on September 18, 1936, to Reddich and Mildred (Seaholm) Sibley. She was a school counselor for 20 years, 13 of which she spent at Douglas High School, in Winston, Oregon. Sue is survived by her sons, John Flora of Elmira, Oregon and Joe; daughter, Jana; brothers, Art Seaholm of Alaska; Oran Seaholm of California; and one grandchild. She is preceded in death by her brother, Glen Seaholm. A memorial celebration of life will be held at Musgrove FAMILY CENTER, 1152 Olive Street, Eugene, Oregon at, 11 a.m. on, July 22, 2006. Pearl Irene Creason
CREASON, Pearl Irene — Age 99, of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, passed away at a foster care facility in Rosburg, on Saturday, June 8, 2006. She was born in Elgin, Iowa, on September 29, 1906, to the late Charles and Mary Peterman Grimm. She had lived in Michigan and came to Myrtle Creek in 1934, and had been her ever since. She was a good homemaker, a good wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Evert Golden of Myrtle Creek; Bob and his wife, Carol Golden of Yuma, Arizona and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elizie Golden in 1952 and her second husband, William J. Creason in 1984 and a son, Richard and a daughter, Myrtle. Graveside services will be held at the Myrtle Creek I.O.O.F. Cemetery at 11 a.m., on Monday, July 17, 2006. Mountain View Memorial Chapel at Myrtle Creek is assisting the family.

Shirley M. Allen
ALLEN, Shirley M. — Age 68, passed away on July 12, 2006 in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born in Kelseyville, California January 22, 1938 to Floyd and Alice Shaul. Shirley grew up in Ukiah, California and enjoyed competing in the county rodeos with her horse, Flip, winning many blue ribbons. She worked in the Banking industry for over 40 years. In her retirement Shirley enjoyed fishing, golfing and RVing with her husband, Sam. She was a resident of Roseburg for the past 11 years. Shirley is survived by her husband, Sam of Roseburg, brother, Ron Shaul (Cathy) of Roseburg, sister, Ardell Horton (Monty) of Ukiah, son, Robert Scott (Debbie) of St George, Utah, daughters, Karen McChesney (Charles), Kathy Kaplan (Joel), Sherri Micieli (Dominick), Audra Allen (Amy) of Las Vegas, Nevada 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of Las Vegas. Services will be private, a memorial gathering will be announced at a later date. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ursula Riech Voeglie
VOEGLIE, Ursula Riech — Age 85, passed away peacefully at her home on July 6, 2006. Born to Hans and Mimi Riech on April 23, 1921 in Hamburg, Germany, Ursula at 14 years of age came with her family to the United States. She attended and graduated from high school in New Jersey. With an interest in dance, she attended lessons where she met Everett John Voeglie who whirled her around the dance floor and married her in August 1942, Everett and Ursula parented three children, Nancy, Spring and Steven. Ursula remained at home while she raised her children. She was a very devoted and involved mother, wife and homemaker. In 1965 Ursula went to work for the U.S. Post Office where she achieved and held a career appointed position. She happily served her rural community for more than 20 years. Determinedly, she worked until she was eligible to receive full retirement benefits. She did so, and retired in 1985. She and Everett then moved to Ocala, Florida where she remained for 17 years. In 2001, Everett proceeded her in death. She then moved to Ellensburg, Washington to live close to her daughter and her family. Ursula lived then until moving to Roseburg in 2004. She was actively involved in local groups and organizations such as YMCA and formerly as a Girl Scout leader, as well as active participation for many years with her children’s PTA, including a presidency. She adored butterflies, children and most of all, babies. Ursula was so kind she would go out of her way to help others. She was also proceeded in death by her parents, Hans and Mimi; sister, Lore of Connecticut; grandson, Hector of North Hollywood; daughter-in-law, Nina of Pennsylvania. Survivors include her three children; Nancy Batzdorff of North Hollywood, California, Spring Thomas and her husband, Michael of Oakland, Oregon, and Steven Voeglie of Malvern, Pennsylvania, four grandchildren, Elle Batchelor of Burbank California, Rick Gibson of Seattle, Washington and Jocelyn and Jeremy Voeglie of Malvern two great-grandchildren; Tyler and Caitlyn Batchelor of Burbank. A ‘Celebration of Ursula’s Life’ will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 2:30 pm,Garden Valley Retirement Center, 1800 Hlighwood NW, Roseburg. The famjly requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Ursula’s memory to Roseburg YMCA Children’s Programs or Melrose Community Church children’s programs. Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses is in charge of arrangements.

Shirley Ann Graves
GRAVES, Shirley Ann — Age 66, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2006. She was born on June 23, 1940, in Woodbine, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Kathryn (Schmidt) Ettleman. She made several different states her home until before finally settling permanently in the Roseburg area thirty years ago. She was united in marriage to William Graves on June 29, 1977. Shirley was a member of the Victory Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, watching her birds and watching her family race BMX bikes, but her real love was spending time with her family. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife and mother. Even when she did not agree with her children’s choices, she was always there for them, giving each and every one of them her unconditional love and support. She has touched the lives and hearts of everyone who knew her and will very much be missed for her sense of humor, smile and laughter She is survived by her husband, William Graves Sr. of Roseburg; her parents, Clifford and Kathryn Graves of California and a brother, Robert Ettleman and his family of California. She also leaves her children, Karla Smith of Roseburg; Randy Sessions and his wife, Pam of Sutherlin Oregon; Robert Sessions of Roseburg; Darcy Sellman of Sutherlin; Donald Sellman of Oklahoma and William Graves Jr. and his wife, April of Roseburg and 21 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at 2 p.m., at Taylor’s Family Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Sidney Woodard. Interment will follow at the IOOF Cemetery in Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Friends may pay their respects on Wednesday morning, from 10 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
