John (Jack) Price
PRICE, John (Jack) Chauncey — Age 90, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away in his sleep on July 14, 2006. The first born of Hazel and Chauncey Price, Jack was born on August 22, 1915, in Sifton, Washington. He grew up in Carson, Washington, and it was there he developed his love of the forest, wildlife and fishing. He graduated from Stevenson, Washington, High School in 1935, and was an active student, including many sports. Jack graduated from the University of Washington in 1939 with a degree in Wildlife Biology. During summers he worked for the Forest Service as a lookout in the Mt. Adams and Gifford Pinchot National Forests. After graduation he worked for the US Fisheries & Wildlife Service until WWII. Jack immediately joined the Navy, went to Officer’s School and became an Executive Officer (XO) on a troop ship in the Mediterranean. It was there, at Anzio, Italy, his ship was bombed and sank. He was later assigned duties of Captain for a ship being launched in Portland, Oregon, and went immediately to the Pacific to defend against suicide airplane attacks against the fleet and perform pre-invasion patrols. After the war, he returned to the Northwest and the Forest Service where he held increasingly responsible positions until 1957, when he assumed the Little River District Ranger post at Glide, Oregon, where he served until his retirement in 1972 to a farm on North Bank Road. During his career Jack was innovative in the areas of forest management, recreational usage for the public and identification of “super tree” for improving forest recovery and yields. He was a frequent subject of articles in The News-Review and his knowledge of trees and forest environments kept him in demand well after his official retirement. On August 29, 1948, Jack married Frances Tower and on September 22, 1949, they had a daughter, Jan, who currently resides in Bellevue, Washington, with her husband, Michael Fitzgerald; and their daughter, Cory. Jack is also survived by a sister, Kathleen Rollefson of Chehalis, Washington. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004, his parents, his brother Truman Price; and sister Virginia Welch. Mr. Price was active in the Glide community and is a past president of Kiwanis, past commander of the VFW and member of the Society of Foresters.
