Keith Pettengill
PETTENGILL, Keith — Age 47, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and courageous hero to many who knew him or knew about him, passed away on Monday, July 24, 2006, at his home. Keith was larger than life, and when he was in a room, everyone knew it. Keith was bigger than the blindness that stole his sight in his twenties and bigger than the cancer that stole his life from us all at only 47 years old. He was a beacon of light to the world, an example of how hardships may help to define us, strengthen us, and steel us for the fight, but never would it dictate how he would live his life. It was under adversity that his light shined the brightest and seemed to redefine his lust for life, and his devotion to others above himself. Keith was born on September 14, 1958, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, the third son, of Judith Pettengill (Buxton) and Kenneth Pettengill, who say he was the happiest child they had ever seen, never without a smile on his face. They moved to Riddle, Oregon, in 1964, where the family stayed and lived. Keith attended Riddle schools where he was a stand out wrestler. After leaving school in 1976, Keith worked in the local area and met his true love and wife, Lisa (Shirley) in 1978. They married in 1979 and started their own family soon after. It was after his children, Rachelle, Kirk, and Trisha were born that Keith suffered a severe set back when he lost his eyesight to a rare degenerative eye disease. This was the first time, but not the last that Keith would accept a devastating diagnosis, deal with it, and then move on using that adversity to redirect his life, goals, and ambitions. Keith never allowed adversity to take hold of him, he took hold of it, and used it as motivation to do more. He lost his eyesight only to have his vision clarified. College can be difficult for the sighted, but after blindness, Keith decided to get a college education to better support his family. He graduated from UCC with an associate’s degree in 1985 and would later go on to get his bachelor’s degree from Southern Oregon University in 1993. In 1994, he volunteered at the former CSD offices and through that was hired by the Douglas County Juvenile Department as a Probation Officer. His co-workers were also amazing as they and other county workers donated their vacation days to Keith as he ran out so that he wouldn’t lose pay. They did this not just for a few weeks or months, but for years. It was during this time, over ten years ago, that a mole on his back was diagnosed as malignant melanoma. He would endure countless surgeries, radiation therapy, and radio surgery procedures, but again, refused to allow cancer to consume his life even as it ravaged his body. His spirit and light stayed bright to all who knew him. He continued the job he loved, and found a renewed devotion to his family and friends. He started up guitar lessons, became the color announcer on the radio for the Doc Stewart baseball team with his good friend, Brian Prawitz, and joined the Kiwanis Club to help handicapped and disadvantaged children. Keith helped professionally, spiritually, and financially in the near recovery of his niece, Keely from autism. Keith loved his wife and children more than anything else and was devoted to his children’s interests, dreams, and accomplishments as they grew up. He attended every sporting event or activity and was always the loudest fan and “umpire heckler” even though he couldn’t see the action. Keith loved music and sports and knew just about every fact there was to know about either one. He loved the ocean and that was often the place he sought for reflection and solace when times were tough. Keith was the Grand Marshall at last years and this years Relay For Life and for the first time talked publicly about his battle with cancer. He was an inspiration to all who were there and while he was unable to make it to this years relay, the following weekend friends and family kicked off the first annual “Keith Pettengill Classic” softball tournament, where nearly $4,500 was raised for Douglas County Cancer Services. Keith taught us all that our time here is limited and the choice as to how we spend that time is up to each of us, irregardless of the challenges. He left us with this legacy and is survived and forever remembered by his wife, Lisa Pettengill of Roseburg; children, Rachelle Ford and her husband, Chris Ford; Kirk Pettengill of Roseburg; Trisha Pettengill of Roseburg; parents, Kenneth and Judi Pettengill of Glide, Oregon; brothers and sisters, Stephen Pettengill of Portland, Oregon; Bruce Pettengill and his wife, Connie of Sutherliln, Oregon; Kendra Pettengill of Glide; JoDee Pettengill and her fiancé, Richard Simila of Portland; Mitch Pettengill of Portland; grandchildren, Jorden Ford; Tyler Ford; Paige Ford, all of Roseburg; sister-in-law, Vicki Parker of Nevada; nieces and nephews, Randy; Bryce; Desiree; Tina; Michael; Skyler; Keely; aunts and uncles, Charles and Doris Pettengill of Green, Oregon; Lewis and Norma Pettengill of Peck, Idaho; Linda and John Hicks of Winston, Oregon; cousins, Randy; Edie; Eric and Joey. Keith and Lisa were soul-mates, the lucky among us that have found true love. Through every adversity Lisa was the rock on which Keith could rely. Her caring devotion never wavered and she stayed lovingly by his side, with her children, to the very end, never showing her own pain or giving thought to her own needs. Once you could count Keith as a friend, he was a friend for life, and was always there when someone was in need. Because of this, Keith is also survived by many special friends who in turn stayed devoted to him and went above and beyond throughout the toughest years. His life-long friend, Kevin Shenefield of Walla Walla, Washington, along with his wife, Gidget, and their children, Nick; Ben; Dylan; and Alyssa. Keith’s children’s fiancés, Buck Forrest and Ashley Claiborne, who also helped to care for Keith in his final months. Brian Prawitz, Keith’s radio partner and close family friend who will keep Keith’s name and legacy alive for years to come. Doctors who became life-long family friends, Ken Lawson and Jon Gambill. Keith will live forever in our hearts and souls and while the world feels darker without his presence, he left a beacon of light for all of us to follow in this life and into a life ever after. He is now in Paradise and for the first time in over 20 years he can see it all in perfect clarity. Lisa asks that if you would like to make a donation in Keith's name, please make it to Douglas County Cancer Services, P.O. Box 2064, Roseburg, OR. A potluck memorial will be held at the Stewart Park Pavillion, this Sunday, July 30, 2006, at 5:30 p.m.
