James Marion Watkins

CANBY — James Marion “Jim” Watkins of Canby died Sept. 29, 2004, with his wife and daughter at his bedside. He was 87.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at Willamette National Cemetery.

He was born in May 1917 in Eugene, where he lived during his youth and attended the University of Oregon as a business major.

Jim met Genevieve, and they were married when he was 27.

He joined the U.S. Army and completed three years of service to his country, serving at the rank of first lieutenant at the time of his discharge.

During his time in the service, he saw action in Europe in World War II.

Upon his return from the Army, he moved from Eugene to the Oakridge area, where he and his wife raised their family. He owned and operated several small businesses over the years.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and up to the end, he loved to follow the Oregon Duck football games and talk about their chances in the Pac 10, especially against the rival Beavers, with anyone that would engage him in conversation. He will be missed, family and friends say.

He is survived by wife Genevieve Watkins; children James K. Watkins of North Carolina, daughter Deve L. Swaim of Canby; and Tod L. Watkins of Redmond, six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Canby Funeral Chapel is entrusted with his services.

Zouri ‘Dixie’ P. Brandt

MOLALLA — Zouri “Dixie” P. Brandt of Molalla, formerly of Woodburn, died Feb. 3, 2005. She was 78.

A private family memorial service will be held.

She was born March 24, 1926, in Halstead, Kan., the third of six children.

In 1944, she moved to Hubbard. She worked at the Oregon shipyards as a welder. She also worked at Woolworth’s and at the Birdseye Cannery in Woodburn.

Dixie married Robert “Bob” C. Brandt in 1947.

The couple owned and operated the Zoo Auto Park in Hubbard. In 1950, they moved to Woodburn.

In 1963, she began working at North Marion Grade School as a teacher’s aide, where she worked until 1989. She then retired, living in Woodburn until she suffered a stroke in 1999.

She enjoyed bowling, golfing, pinochle and trips with her loving husband. Her greatest joy was the time spent with her family.

Dixie will be remembered always for her loyalty, generosity, loving kindness, hospitality and strength of character, family and friends say.

She is survived by husband Bob; daughter Lynnette Zimmer of Canby, sons Steven Brandt of Cornelius and Jeffrey Brandt of Woodburn; sister Laura Jackson of Woodburn; brother Lee Lewis of Taft; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Remembrances may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice.

Ivan Leonard Arneson

CANBY — Ivan Leonard Arneson of Canby died April 18, 2005. He was 95.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 21, at the Oregon City Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Leroy Poews officiating.

Burial will be at Zion Memorial Cemetery in Canby.

He was born Feb. 7, 1910, in Westbrook, Minn., to parents Alfred and Emma Arneson.

The family moved to Canby in 1913 and he attended local schools, graduating from Canby High.

Ivan married Robertha Burrell in June 1938.

He received his teaching certificate from Oregon Normal School in Monmouth and taught seventh-grade students for nine years in the Canby area.

Ivan started Arneson Nursery in 1937, specializing in fruit trees, fruit tree rootstock and the hydridization of deciduous azaleas, having 20 of their finest hybrids named and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society in England.

He was inducted into the Nurserymen’s Hall of Fame in 1995.

He was a member of the Oregon Association of Nurserymen and the Oregon City Church of the Nazarene.

He is survived by wife Robertha Arneson of Canby; daughter Ellen Hatheway of Canby; son Glen Arneson of Canby; sisters Bernice Polchow of Centralia, Wash., and Marie Arneson of Portland; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Canby Funeral Chapel is in care of arrangements.

Patrick C. McCormick

CANBY — Patrick Clinton McCormick of Canby died April 17, 2005, at his home of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He was 84.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. A memorial will be held at a later date.

He was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Woodburn, the son of Joseph and Mary McCormick.

Pat attended school at Woodburn, graduating with the Class of 1939. He served in the 48th Construction Battalion of the U.S. Navy from 1942-45.

He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 122. He grew hops in the Woodburn area following World War II.

In 1952, he moved to Las Vegas, Nev., and worked as a heavy equipment operator for Espey Brothers and later for the Atomic Energy Commission, setting and retrieving data instruments following the test blasts.

He worked for both the Nevada test site at Mercury, Nev., and in the South Pacific at the Enewetak Hydrogen Test site.

Pat married Dorothy Bany of Canby in 1953.

The couple made their home in Las Vegas until 1958 when they returned to Oregon to farm in the Lone Elder area. In 1998, they moved back to Las Vegas to enjoy the warm climate, returning to Canby in February 2005.

Pat loved people and doing for others and he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

He is survived by wife Dorothy; son Paul and wife Kendra McCormick and their daughter, Nichole; son Steve and wife Sue McCormick and their sons Patrick and Adam, all of Canby; daughter Suzanne Peterson and her daughter Danielle of Filer, Idaho; brothers Raymond and Richard McCormick; and sister Eloraine Johnston, all of Woodburn.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to the Canby Adult Center, Willamette Falls Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Canby Funeral Chapel is entrusted with his arrangements.

Brookelynn Rebecca Curths

Brookelynn Rebecca Curths was born to Shannon Saucedo and Jesse Curths of Canby June 2, 2006, at Silverton Hospital.

She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20 inches long at her 4 p.m. birth.

Austin Lee Matthews

Austin Lee Matthews was born to Karen and Timothy Matthews of Canby on March 27, 2006.

He weighed 6 pounds, 13 ½ ounces and measured 19 inches at his 12:55 p.m. birth at Willamette Falls Hospital.

He joins siblings Codi, 10, and Blaine, 9.

Grandparents are Lee and Patty McNulty of Aurora and Peggy and Steven Romane of Hubbard.

Great-grandparents are Maude Cole of Aurora and Mary McNulty of Woodburn.

William Franklin Cernitz

William Franklin Cernitz was born to Heidi Keyser Cernitz and Dylan Cernitz of Canby May 8, 2006.

He weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 19 inches at his 10:02 a.m. birth at Willamette Falls Hospital.

He joins a brother, Ian, 3.

Grandparents are William and Susan Keyser of Canby and Neil and Tina Cernitz of Wilsonville.

Great-grandparents are Harold and Joanne Potter of Canby, Larry and Fay Carmella of Beavercreek, and Barbara Leonard of Tigard.

F. Wildon Colbaugh

F. Wildon Colbaugh, 91, died Monday, June 19, 2006, in a McMinnville hospital.

He was born May 9, 1915, in Corona, N.M., to Mabel and Clinton D. Colbaugh. He graduated from Medford High School in 1933. He continued his education at Oregon State University and Central Bible College in Springfield, Mo.

He married Florence B. Johnson in 1939. She died in 1995.

They were pastors at churches in North Carolina, Missouri and Oregon. He worked 27 years at the Assemblies of God headquarters in Springfield, Mo., and retired to Canby in 1980.

He enjoyed the coast and his last home was in Oceanside. At the time of his death, he was living with his grandson, Marc Zeedar in Lafayette.

He is survived by daughters Carol Van Wagner of Dundee and Phyllis Pincosy of Oakland, Calif.; sons Keith Colbaugh of Garibaldi and Phil Colbaugh of Canby; brother Lloyd Colbaugh of Springfield, Mo.; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, June 26, at the Lake Oswego Christian Center at 17555 Bryant Road. A potluck will follow.

Fannie Hopson

Fannie Groshong Hopson, 89, formerly of Woodburn, died June 18, 2006.

Born Nov. 2, 1916, in Dunkirk, Mont., she raised 11 children while helping her husband with his sawmill and logging business. She also operated a theater in Arlington, Wash., before moving to Bandon. She worked as a nurse and was an accomplished seamstress and taught Stretch n Sew.

She lived in Bandon and Elkton and retired to Crooked River Ranch in Central Oregon. She then moved to Woodburn and then to Rochester, Wash., in 2003.

She was active in the Episcopal Church and was an avid golfer well into her 80s with two holes-in-one to her credit.

She married Stanley Groshong on April 11, 1936, in Centralia, Wash. He died in 1961.

In 1962, she married Miles William “Bill” Hopson. He died in 1980.

She is survived by daughters Gayle Hescock of Crooked River, Faye Bohles of Albany and Nancy Osbekoff of Rochester, Wash.; sons Spencer of Albany and Richard and Gordon of Eugene; four stepchildren; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

At her request, no funeral was held, but a celebration of life will be held in Centralia.

Verna Larsen

Verna P. Larsen, 88, of Woodburn, died June 18, 2006.

Born March 15, 1918, in Dagmar, Mont., she lived in Lake Grove on a small dairy farm and opened Lake Grove Garden Store Romper Room and Faksimiles businesses. She moved to Woodburn Senior Estates after living in Lake Grove for 42 years.

She was active in the community and with several public organizations.

She married Raymond Arthur Larsen in Portland on June 14, 1936. He died in 2000.

She is survived by daughters Gloria Delaney of West Hartford, Conn., and Elgie Zeni of Santa Barbara, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by daughter Sarah in 2000.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Silver Creek Assisted Living in Woodburn.

James A. Dean Sr.

James A. Dean Sr., 76, of Milwaukie, died June 19, 2006.

He was born Oct. 10, 1929, in Owensboro, Ky. He married Evelyne M. Frederikson on Feb. 28, 1954. She died in 2001.

He had lived in the Milwaukie-Gladstone area about 42 years and worked as a machinist for Fruehauf Trailer.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and Korea, he was a member of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Reserves for 20 years.

He is survived by son James Dean Jr. and wife Cindy of Oregon City, daughter Kathleen Denson and husband Steve of Hayden, Idaho; sister Betty Peyton of Owensboro, Ky.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Friday at Stehn Family Chapels Milwaukie Tribute Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association in care of Stehn Family Chapels in Milwaukie.

David Grimes

David James Grimes, 51, formerly of Woodburn, died June 19, 2006.

Born March 31, 1955, in Long Beach, Calif., he moved to Woodburn as a child and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1973. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Oregon in 1977. He worked for Key Bank in Woodburn, and then worked 16 years at Bank of America and the past five years as an asset and liability manager for OnPoint Community Credit Union in Portland.

He married Tammy Wiegand in 1981.

He enjoyed reading, music, biking, hiking, racquetball, basketball and cruising in his Miata. He supported his kids in their activities including dog agility, 4-H and martial arts.

He is survived by his wife, children Andrew Grimes and Lindsey Grimes of Canby, mother Betty Grimes of Woodburn and brother Rick Grimes of Santa Fe, N.M.

A celebration of life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 24, at Canby American Legion Hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Oregon Humane Society.
