Bonnie Ann Hovanic

Bonnie Ann Hovanic died June13, 2008, in Tacoma Wash., at the age of 39.

She was born in Tacoma on April 28, 1969, and moved to Portland in 1973 and to Molalla in 1979. She attended Butte Creek Grade School and graduated from Molalla High School in 1987. She was a Butte Creek Bobcat cheerleader and played softball and volleyball in high school.

After high school, she returned to Tacoma where she attended Clover Park Technical College and earned a surgical technologist certificate. For 10 years, she worked at Tacoma General Hospital where she was born and then transferred to Virginia Mason Hospital in Federal Way, Wash.

Survivors include her daughter, Jada; parents, Gaylen and Katie Hovanic; grandmother, Bonnie Jean Ingle; and brothers, Patrick of Wilsonville, Chris of Canby and Steve of Gladstone.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham.

Martha Dodds

Martha Dodds, 86, died Tuesday, June 24, in Canby.

She was born March 11, 1922, in Greenbush, Minn., to John and Magna Melby. She grew up in Minnesota where she graduated from high school and then graduated from North Dakota State University.

She married John Dodds in 1947. She taught home economics in Lancaster, Minn., and Portland before becoming a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Dan of Princeton, B.C., Canada, and Tom of Canby, and two grandsons.

No service will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ruth E. Crain

Ruth E. Crain, 88, of Canby, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008.

She was born Oct. 21, 1919, in Fairsburg, Mich., to Carl and Esther Heathcote St. John. She moved to Seattle, Wash., in 1945, and to Canby in 1969. She married Lorin Crain on June 4, 1938.

Survivors include her son, Ray; daughter, Lelah Barnes; brother, Ivan St. John; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her sister, Hope St. John, preceded her in death.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at Canby Alliance Church with burial at Aurora Community Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Canby Alliance Church general building fund.

Dennis Oliver Wells

Dennis Oliver Wells, 85, of Canby, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, of Alzheimer’s disease.

He was born June 19, 1922, in Forman, N.D., the third of six children of Roy and Anna Wells. He quit school early to work on the farm and ride horses in races. He also worked as a cook in his brother-in-law’s restaurant.

He joined the National Guard at 18 and was drafted the following year. He lived in North Dakota until his discharge from the U.S. Army in 1943.

He married Eula Baese in Idaho on March 1, 1943, and they moved to North Portland, where he began a career as a painter at the shipyards and founded Wells Painting Co.

They moved several times, eventually settling on a three-acre site in Wilsonville where he could have horses. In 1998, they moved to Canby to be closer to their daughters.

A longtime member of the Washington County Sheriff’s Posse, he also was a member of Beaverton Elks.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, daughters Cherie Boyce of Canby and Diane Anderson of Aurora; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Canby Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dee Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at Finley-Sunset Hills.

Memorial contributions may be made to Thelma’s Place (www.thelmasplace.org) or the Oregon Alzheimer’s Association.

Florence V. Zacher

Florence V. Zacher, 86, died June 18, 2008, in Canby.

She was born April 1, 1922, in South Dakota to Elta and Louis Sperb. She attended school in Canby and a secretarial school in Oregon City. She married Raymen Zacher in Washington in 1942.

She worked as a secretary in various Oregon state agencies. She was an active member of Canby Evangelical Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Rosalie V. Trost; brothers Lyle, Harold and Russell Sperb; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Her son, Ronald Raymen Zacher, preceded her in death.

There will be no services.

Robert Walsh

Robert E. Walsh, 72, of Woodburn, died Sunday, June 22, 2008.

Born, July 8, 1935, in Luther, Mich., he grew up in Michigan and lived in California before moving to Woodburn in 1960. He married Nancy Shute on March 16, 1958 in Ukiah, Calif. She died Dec. 1, 2000.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War..

He worked as the control room floor corporal for the state penitentiary for 22 years before retiring in 1998.

A member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, he enjoyed watching “Animal Planet,” working on cars, gardening and fixing things.

Survivors include his daughters, Rebecca Phillips of Oregon and Patricia Liddell of Woodburn; sons, Robert Jr. of Woodburn and Timothy of Salem; brothers, Mike of Hillsboro and Floyd of Arkansas; sister, Helen of Texas; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 30, at Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Burial with military honors will be at Belle Passi Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Humane Society.

Theodore B. Wollam

Theodore B. Wollam, 82, of Molalla, died Monday, June 23, 2008.

He was born Aug. 22, 1925, to John B. and Irene Yettaw Wollam.

He graduated from high school and served as a corporal and tail gunner in the 5th Bomber Division in the Pacific Theater of World War II.

He worked in television, radio and electronics and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Ida May; daughters, Linda Wollam-Wright of Gladstone and Kymberly Brewster of Molalla; son, Terry D. of West Linn; 10 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at noon Tuesday, July 1, at Adams Cemetery in Molalla with the Rev. Mitch Jorgeson officiating.

Harry Robert Keller

Harry Robert Keller, 84, of Canby, died Wednesday, June 25, 2008.

He was born April 4, 1924, in Presho, S.D., to Edward and Sarah Weatherly Keller. He married Glenora Ireland in 1945.

He moved to Portland in 1959 and to Canby in 1993.

He was a mail carrier for the Portland Post Office for more than 20 years. He had been active at Canby Evangelical Church and the Free Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his daughters, Sharon Ramsey, Shirley Lyman and Linnea Skiffington.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 5, at Canby Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gary Schuknecht officiating. Private burial will be Zion Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to missions of Canby Evangelical Church.

B. “Bill” Lindstrom

B. “Bill” L. Lindstrom, 60, of Woodburn, died Thursday, June 26, 2008.

Born Sept. 2, 1947, in Morris, Minn., he was the warehouse manager for Best Products in California. He moved to Oregon in 1950, returned to California in 1953 and moved to Woodburn in 2002. He enjoyed computers and keeping statistics, organizing things and handiwork.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was the sound tech engineer.

Survivors include his mother, Betty Lindstrom, of Woodburn, aunts, uncles and cousins.

A memorial service will be Monday, June 30, at 2 p.m. at Simon Woodburn Funeral Chapel. Private burial will be at Marshall Cemetery in Marshall, Minn.

Bobby Don Burns

Bobby Don Burns, 59, of Canby, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009, at Oregon Health & Sciences University from staph infection while awaiting a liver transplant.

He was born Sept. 22, 1949, in Dallas, Texas, to Bob and Faye Burns and grew up in Huntsville, Texas. On March 19, 1983, he married Annette Moretti in Galveston, Texas. They moved to Oregon City in 1989 and to Canby in 1997.

He worked most of his life as an electrician and in heating, ventilating and air conditioning, the last 15 years at the Nike World Campus in Beaverton. He considered his “Nike family” a big part of his life and enjoyed going to work every day.

Survivors include his wife; daughter, Chelsea Carey of Glendale, Ariz.; his mother of Huntsville; sisters, Babs Preston of Florida and Terri Cox of Waco, Texas; and two stepgranddaughters.

His father preceded him in death.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. at the Antonia Ballroom on the top floor of Canby Pub and Grill at 221 N. Grant Street.

Erma Lee Broyles

Erma Lea Broyles, 73, of Woodburn, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009.

Born, Oct. 24, 1935, in Woodburn, she grew up in Scotts Mills. She graduated from Molalla High School and studied journalism at George Fox College.

She moved to Woodburn in 2008 and had previously lived in Newburg.

She worked at Birdseye Frozen Foods and was a waitress at the Bus Depot Café in Molalla. She was a member of the Scotts Mills Friends Church where she was a youth director and Sunday school superintendent.

Survivors include her brother, Keith Broyles of Albany; and sister, Mary Lou Spartz of Juno, Alaska.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, and services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18 at Scotts Mills Friends Church. Burial will be at Belle Passi Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Cornelia Ann Lenhart

Cornelia Ann Lenhart, 76, of Woodburn, died Jan. 23, 2009.

She was born Aug. 30, 1932.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Russell G. Lenhart, and sons, Bradly J. Byron G. and Guy A.

Her son George C. preceded her in death.

A private family service was held on the Oregon Coast.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oregon Humane Society and Willamette Valley Hospice

Eva L. Edmonds

Eva L. Cooper Edmonds, 95, of Woodburn, died Jan. 11, 2009.

Born, Jan. 5, 1914, in Oberlin, Kan., she moved to Oregon in 1943. She lived in Elliot Prairie and Hubbard before moving to Woodburn.

On Sept. 5, 1930, she married Raymond Edmonds in Goodland, Kan. He died Jan. 22, 1961.

A homemaker, she was a member of Community Church of Christ where she was the organist for 40 years. She had played the organ at churches since she was 8.

A volunteer for Meals on Wheels and medical transportation for the elderly, she enjoyed cooking, canning, flower gardening, crafts and family reunions. She also enjoyed cake decorating, especially wedding and anniversary cakes, and had received a blue ribbon at the state fair for her cake top.

Survivors include her daughters, Ruby Silver of Woodburn, Phyllis Black of Silverton and Alice Polly and Marie Nichols of Springfield; son, Lyle of Woodburn; 17 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren.

Her son Neil, three brothers, four sisters and four grandchildren preceded her in death.

A funeral service was held Jan. 17 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel with burial at Belle Passi Mausoleum.

Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice of choice.

Betty Ann Hodgkiss services

A memorial service for Betty Ann McGonnell Hodgkiss of Woodburn will be held Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at Simon-Woodburn Chapel. She died Jan. 24, 2009, at the age of 90.
