Dorothy Margaret Peterson

Dorothy Margaret Peterson, 95, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008 in San Jose, Calif.
She was born Feb. 10, 1913 in Weed, Calif. to Jennie and Carl Grossman.
Dorothy worked as a teacher in Paisley, Plush, Lakeview and Klamath Falls and as a scout leader, school cook and seamstress in San Jose. She loved her family above all else. She was a beloved, caring, giving and compassionate daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She taught us to love music, books, dancing, poetry, handmade objects, art and being silly. She taught us how to be strong by her example. She will be intensely missed and fondly remembered by all who knew this great lady.
She is survived by: her husband, Elmer; brothers, Leo and Jim; sister, Katie; daughters, Naida, Joyce and Carol; nephew, Ron; nieces, Jeni Kate, Dian and Janise; grandchildren, Dan, Gary, Nils, Lars and Devin; and great-grandchildren, Sonja and Klara.
At her request there will be no service.

Charles 'BUD' Buck

Charles 'BUD' Buck, 97, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008 at his Klamath Falls home.
Buck was born Dec. 4, l910 in Beatrice, Neb. to Charles H. and Catherine R. (Woods) Buck.
Buck was inducted into the US Army on March 11, 1942 and was honorably discharged Nov. 26, 1945. He served in the European and African theatres as an Army Aircorps Corporal. He had been honored as the oldest US Army Veteran in Klamath County this past Nov. 11, 2007. He earned the Middle Eastern Service Medal, Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre Medal. He was a refueling operator driving a 4 ton truck hauling heavy equipment, bombs and supplies.
His favorite pastime in later years was camping and traveling with his wife Helen, who he Married in 1977. He also loved to go fishing with his favorite nephew, Robert Wilson of Grants Pass.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; three sisters; two brothers and one nephew.
Survivors include: his wife, Helen of Klamath Falls; stepchildren Richard and Cathy Buck of Bend and Arla and Dick Newman of Klamath Falls; six grandchildren and 11 nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Tuesday Sept. 9, at the Westside Cemetery with the Layne Clifton VFW Post 4070 participating.

Fred James Kaley

Fred James Kaley, 71, died at his home in Lakeview on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 from natural causes.
Fred was born to Arthur and Margaret (Hart) Kaley in Silverton on Dec. 29, 1936. The family moved to Fort Rock in 1950 and Fred boarded with the Murphy family in Paisley while he attended high school. He also worked on the Murphy ranch during the summer months. They later moved to Lakeview, where he graduated from high school in 1954.
He enlisted into the Air Force in January, 1955 and was honorably discharged in December, 1958. After his tour of duty, he worked on various ranches in Lake County until 1964 when he began his career as a body and fender repair man with the Ford Garage. He retired from Collins Motors after 25 years of service.
Fred's marriage to Pat Kemry in 1966 ended in a divorced and then in 1996 he married LaDonna Bowen and she preceded him in death in 2001.
Fred thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and most of all, swapping 'lies' with his many friends.
He is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Michel Kaley of Hazen, N D; brother, Joe Kaley of Diamond Head, Miss.; sister, Jean Maxheimer of Tuppelo, Miss.; grandson, Chayse Kaley; grandson and wife, Keith and Aubrey Kaley; granddaughter Anna Kaley; Great-granddaughter Brittany Kaley and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private inurnment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery with military honors provided by the Lakeview VFW Post 4070.
Contributions in Fred's memory may be made to Lakeview Disaster Unit, P.O. Box 1007, Lakeview 97630 or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Bernardine Norton

Benardine Norton, 78, passed away at home on Monday, Sept. 1, 2008, with her family at her side.
She was born Dec. 14, 1930 in Lakeview, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Barry) Shanahan.
Benardine attended San Francisco College for Women (Lone Mountain) and received her teaching credentials and degree from San Francisco State University. She was an elementary school teacher in San Francisco.
On Dec. 14, 1957, she married Gerard James Norton. They moved to Orinda in 1962 and raised their family. Benardine's life revolved around her family's activities and she was active in the Santa Maria Parish. Her passion was bridge and once time allowed her, she became a ranked bridge player before illness forced her to scale back her playing time.
After a long battle with emphysema and other related illnesses, Benardine started to receive hospice care until the time of her passing. She was an ardent supporter of her family and was a loving wife, mother, sister, and friend. She will be dearly missed by many.
She is survived by: sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Mary Norton of Basking Ridge, NJ and Jeffrey and Tamara of San Ramon, Calif.; Son, Mark Orton of Danville, Calif.; daughter, Marta Cunningham of Lafayette, Calif.; grandchildren, Kathryn and Brandon of Danville and Michayla and Keara of Basking Ridge; sisters, Frances Medeiros of Burlingame, Calif. and June Shanahan of Martinez, Calif.
A Rosary Service was held on Monday, Sept. 8 at Hulls Walnut Creek Chapel and a funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Santa Maria Church in Orinda. Internment followed the service at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Lafayette.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Anthony's Dining Room (SF) or The Hospice of the East Bay.

Barbara Jean Cook Shadduck

Barbara Jean Cook Shadduck, 72, beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, heeded the call of her Heavenly Father and returned home to Heaven after a lengthy illness on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008 at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata, Calif. She was surrounded by loving family members and in the prayers of many who knew her at the time of her peaceful death.
Barbara lived many years in Tulelake, Calif. where she graduated from high school and also lived several years in Lakeview. She moved to the Big Lagoon area near Orick, Calif. in 1987, with her loving husband John Shadduck. After working as the switchboard operator at Mad River Community Hospital, she spent her remaining years as a homemaker and enjoyed watching professional football and basketball games with her husband and family. (As a devout Seattle Seahawks fan, she was thrilled to see her team finally make it to the Super Bowl.) Her love of arts and crafts and her many talents were well known, her many creations were lovingly shared with family and friends until her failing health made it impossible to continue. She eagerly listened to those in need and loved to share her insights gained from her many experiences, travels and love of reading and studying.
She was active in the Lighthouse Christian Fellowship church in Orick, fiercely loved God, her church, her country, her family and her many friends.
Barbara is survived by: her devoted husband, John Shadduck of Orick; son, Stacey Shadduck of Portland; daughters, Laura Pendleton of Yakima, Wash. and Jenna Wilson of Howe, Texas; sister, Irene (Ginger) McCambridge of Coarsegold, Calif.; half-sister, Victoria Pace of Burnet, Texas; step-brother, Roy Barr of Molalla; nieces, Tracy Cooke of San Diego, Calif. and Leslie Flores of Norfolk, VA; grandchildren, Gene Pradmore of White Wright, Texas, Ira Pradmore of Bellingham, Wash., Aspen Pendleton of Portland, Autumn Pendleton of Seattle, Wash. and Laura Builta of Citrus Heights Calif; great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Tyler and Jessica Pradmore of White Wright, Texas, Saxon and Aiyana Pradmore of Eugene and Trent Builta of Citrus Heights, Calif.
A private memorial service will be held in Orick at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to Lighthouse Christian Fellowship, Orick, Calif.

Leo E. DuMilieu

Leo E. DuMilieu, 81, passed away in Lakeview on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 after a long illness.
Leo was born to Leo E. and Gertrude (Cogel) DuMilieu, Sr. in Klamath Falls on Oct. 5, 1927. The family moved to Canby, Calif. when Leo was six years old. He received his elementary education in Canby and high school in Alturas, Calif.
Leo married Fern Bowen on Nov. 29, 1946 in Reno, Nev.
He served in the Merchant Marines and when he got out he worked as a sawyer for a few years in Canby. The family moved to Lakeview in 1951. He worked many years as a sawyer for Lakeview Lumber Products. He had operated the Westside ranch since the family purchased it in 1951.
Leo dearly loved the ranch, cattle, horses and his dogs. He also enjoyed watching all the sports on T.V. He was a member of the Lakeview First Baptist Church.
Leo's parents and all his siblings preceded him in death.
He is survived by: his wife, Fern DuMilieu of Lakeview; sons and daughters-in-law, Bob and Merrie DuMilieu of Medford, David and Tina DuMilieu of Beatty and Rick and Laurie DuMilieu of Lakeview; grandchildren, Lynette Gonzales, Lacy Compuzona, Brad DuMilieu and Sharla Maher and nine great -grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Lakeview First Baptist Church with the committal in the Westside Cemetery. A pot luck dinner will be served in the Westside Grange following the committal. Viewing will be in the Desert Rose Funeral Chapel on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Corinna (Connie) Marie Frank

Corinna (Connie) Marie Frank, 44, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008 in Plush.
Connie was born May 15, 1964 in Lakeview to Jack and Breda Flynn. She graduated from Lakeview High School in 1982. Connie continued her education at Oregon State University and Oregon Institute of Technology.
On Aug. 2, 1997 she married Chad Frank. They had four sons: Ross, Keith, Jace and Con. She will be greatly missed by family and her many friends.
Connie loved volleyball, basketball, and played all four years in high school. Her enthusiasm for sports continued through the years. She loved to watch her boys play any sport and attended all of their games possible. If Connie was not playing a sport or watching a game, she most likely was on the ranch being a cowgirl.
She and Chad enjoyed many trips together, with those to Reno being their favorite.
Connie is survived by: her husband, Chad; sons, Ross, Keith, Jace and Con, all of Lakeview; daughter Lana; parents, Jack and Breda Flynn of Plush; sister and brother '“in-law, Jackie and Roger Mathis of St. Louis, Mo.; mothers-in-law, Lana and her husband Phil Swisher of Klamath Falls and Susan Frank of Lakeview; brothers-in-law and wives, Darren and Yvonne Frank of Gilchrist; Ron and Lili Frank of Lakeview; brother-in-law, Rob Frank of Crane and sister-in-law, Jessica Frank of Lakeview. Nephews: John and Jack Mathis of St. Louis, Mo., Tate and Tony Frank of Lakeview, Jake Frank of Gilchrist; and numerous aunts, uncles and special cousins.
Services will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Recitation of the Holy Rosary held Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. and Requiem Funeral Mass on Thursday, Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. Internment will take place at the family plot at Sunset Cemetery. A luncheon reception will follow immediately at the Elks Lodge.
Contributions may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation, Lakeview Booster Club or a charity of your choice.

Frances Ellen Douglass Herbert

Frances Ellen Douglass Herbert, 95, entered eternal life on Friday, Aug. 29, 2008 in Auburn, Calif. after enduring a lengthy illness.
She was born on March 8 1913 in Manteca, Calif. to Eugene and Ada Douglass, oldest of four siblings.
Frances attended Manteca schools and Modesto Jr. College. She was married to Albert Wm. Herbert on May 10, 1935, in Manteca. Frances was a mother and a homemaker and she worked and volunteered in various capacities, as a teacher's aide, store clerk, receptionist and office assistant in numerous locations '“ Placerville, White Pines, Mokelumne Hill, Bear Valley and Lakeview. Frances was the secretary for the Foresthill, Calif. Chamber of Commerce for a number of years. She lived in Foresthill for 32 years before moving to The Auburn Ravine Terrace in 1997. Frances enjoyed visiting, reading, gardening, playing bridge and travel. She was a lifetime member of Motherlode Chapter (formerly Crescent Chapter) OES, Murphys, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, parents and siblings.
She is survived by: son, Clifford (Winifred) of Reno, Nev. and daughter, Ara Lee Bryson of Vaneta; two grandsons, two great-grandsons, nieces, nephews and long time friend, Jan Nelson of Foresthill, Calif.
Cremation is under the direction of Chapel of the Hills, Auburn, with private burial in the Foresthill Cemetery next to her husband.

William (Bill) Jerry Strieby

William Jerry Strieby, 86, passed peacefully at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008.
Dr. Strieby was born Jan. 12, 1922 in Klamath Falls to Charles E. and Eleanor (Reimers) Strieby. As a child, his experiences at the Shriner's Hospital while receiving treatment for polio ultimately guided him to his lifelong passion of community service through medicine.
He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1940 and from the University of Oregon Medical School in 1946. He returned to Lakeview and served as a General Practitioner for 52 years upon retirement in 1999. After retirement he continued to serve as the Medical Director for Lake District Hospital Home Health and Hospice.
He married Barbara Overton in 1952; she preceded him in death in 1967. In 1969 he married Lois Clause Patterson.
He was a life member of the Lakeview Lions Club, Lake County Shrine Club, First Presbyterian Church and the Elks Lodge. Dr. Strieby also was a life member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Oregon Health Science University School of Medicine Alumni Association. Along with other notable community leaders of his time, Dr. Strieby helped to launch medical air-transport services to the area and set in motion the establishment of the Lake County Senior Center along with the adjoining elderly and disabled housing facilities at Aspen Court. Dr. Strieby was also among those whose collaboration resulted in the founding of the Lake District Hospital. His passing is one of immense loss not only to that of his family, but also one of great significance to his beloved community.
He was preceded in death by: his parents and his two half brothers, Robert Strieby and Edward Strieby.
He is survived by: his wife, Lois; son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Bonnie Strieby of Soldotna, Alaska; daughter, Charlys of Anchorage, Alaska; stepsons, Stephen Patterson of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Donald and step daughter-in-law Suzan of Florence, Mont. and Bruce and step daughter-in-law Jan of Camas, Wash.; sister, Dora and brother-in-law Lawrence 'Hig' Overton of Burns; sister-in-law, Lee Strieby; nephew, Rod Strieby and niece, Bobbie Graham of Klamath Falls. Grandchildren, Matthew and Nathan Strieby of Soldotna and Jerry and Tia Kempton of Anchorage; step grandchildren, Brett and Christopher Patterson of Florence, Troy, Trisha and Tessa Patterson of Camas.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 11 a.m. Private interment will take place at the Sunset Cemetery family plot. A luncheon/reception will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service.

Joan Scroggins

Joan Scroggins, 74 died peacefully in Elk Grove, Calif. on Sunday, Aug. 24, 2008 following a short battle with cancer.
Joan was born on Feb. 1, 1934 in Irwin, Tenn. to Harrison and Della Foster. Her family moved to Lakeview in 1944. In June of 1950 she married her greatest love, Jim Scroggins.
Joan and Jim loved Lakeview. Joan worked at the Lake District Hospital and at the local optometrists office for many years.
In 1964 when American Forest Products sold, Jim took a job transfer to Sutter Creek, Calif. where they were very happy for 38 years.
Joan became a realtor and had her own office for over 20 years. She retired in 1997. Until 2002, Joan and Jim returned to Lakeview every year for visiting family and camping. They loved the family camping reunion.
In 2002 Jim died and Joan moved to Elk Grove, Calif. to be with her daughter Carla. She enjoyed Elk Grove so much as her two grandchildren, their spouses and three great-grandchildren also lived in Elk Grove.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; spouse Jim; brothers Jack and Kyle Foster; sisters Norma Huddleston and Jeri Merrill.
Joan is survived by her daughter Carla Scharffer; brother Frank Foster of Klamath Falls; sisters Juanita Post of Washington and Carole Stooksberry of Canada; grandchildren Paul and Andrea Scharffer and Jamie and Albert Cobian; great-grandchildren Paul Scharffer Jr. and Eric and Alyssa Cobian; many nieces and nephews that she loved so much.
A celebration of life service will be held Saturday Sept. 27, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the Ousley Osterman Huffstutter Funeral Chapel.
Contributions in memory of Joan may be made to the Lake District Hospital, 700 S. J St. Lakeview 97630 for equipment purchases.
