Caleb James Farabee

Caleb James Farabee, infant son of Amy Johnson and Cody Farabee, died at a Portland hospital from premature complications Sept. 1, 2003.

He was born Aug. 29, 2003.

He is survived by his parents, Cody Farabee and Amy Johnson, Beaverton; grandparents Randy and Rose (Kackley) Davis, The Dalles; Don and Dai Farabee, Gresham; and Kim Richardson, Beaverton; great-grandmothers JoAnn Dehart and Judy Davis, The Dalles; Kathy Johnson and Doris Miller, Portland; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Shirley Kackley and Richard “Bud” Davis, and a cousin, Emily Stewart.

Private cremation was held with Youngs Funeral Home, Tigard, in care of arrangements.

Nell Louise Parsons

Nell Louise Parsons, 77, a resident of The Dalles, died at her home on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003.

She was born March 21, 1926, in Saint George, S. C. and was raised in Hollyhill, S. C.

She married Marion Edward Parsons March 31, 1945, in Jacksonville, Fla. and they lived in Jacksonville until 1960 when they moved to The Dalles area. She worked for many years at Columbia Basin Care Facility.

She was a member of The Dalles Eagles Lodges, Senior Center and enjoyed playing bingo and crocheting.

She is survived by two daughters and their spouses, Peggy and Clay Jennings, The Dalles; Marian Alice and Daniel Marick, Odessa, Tex.; 4 grandchildren, Lynnette, Mary, David and Thomas and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Marion on April 29, 1973, two half-sisters and a half-brother.

Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Monday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 9 a.m. with Rev. Jack Dunnaway officiating. Private cremation will follow at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with burial of cremains at The Dalles Cherry Heights Odd Fellow’s Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of The Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.

Ida Pauline Hackett Edwards

Former Hood River resident Pauline Edwards died Sept. 4, 2003 at the Mid Columbia Medical Center. She was 85.

Services for Mrs. Edwards were Sept. 6, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with interment at Pine Grove Cemetery. Visitation was Sept. 5 at Anderson’s Tribute Center.

Ida Pauline Hackett was born March 11, 1918 in New Plymouth, Idaho to Paul Samuel and Ida (Blind) Hackett. She moved with her family to Bend at the age of six. She attended schools in Bend and graduated from Bend High School in 1936.

Shortly after high school she moved to Portland, where she attended Western Beauty College. She worked for the Signal Corps at the Vancouver Barracks as a telephone operator, then worked for a beauty salon in Portland.
On Jan. 28, 1943 she married Ralph Benjamin Edwards in Vancouver. Soon after, Mr. Edwards left to serve his country during World War II, returning in 1945 after being honorably discharged from the Army.

The couple lived in Bend, Hermiston and LaGrande before moving to Hood River in 1955, where Pauline Edwards worked for Diamond Fruit. She and her husband retired in 1977.

In 2000 Mrs. Edwards moved to The Dalles.

She enjoyed camping, clamming and frequent travels. She particularly enjoyed her trips to Branson, Mo., and Hawaii.

Mrs. Edwards is survived by her son Darryl and his wife Bonnie Edwards of The Dalles; daughters Charlene Koch of Vancouver, and Marlene and her husband Greg Jolly, sister Esther Duvall of Ely, Nev., grandchildren Kevin and his wife Alice Jolly, Chris Jolly, Jeana Perkins, Martha Edwards, Karen and her husband Brandon, great grandchildren Gabe Perkins-Lamont, Elizabeth Jolly, Hannah Pauline Jolly, Keylee Fuller and Benjamin Fox.

Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church c/o Anderson’s Tribute Center 1401 Belmont Hood River, Ore., 97031.

Irene Dorthy Ripplinger

Irene Dorthy Ripplinger, 74, a resident of The Dalles since 1955, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2003 at her home.

She was born Aug. 29, 1929, in Roscoe, S.D., the third of seven children to Katherine Mary (McManus) and Fred Huft. She was raised in Roscoe and then moved to Prosser, Wash.

She married John Joe Ripplinger on her birthday, Aug. 29, 1950 in Prosser, Wash. They lived in Grandview, Prosser, Richland and settled in The Dalles in 1955.

She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, enjoyed watching her soap opera, playing cards, going camping and being with her family and friends.
Irene is survived by her children, Robert and his wife Cheryl Ripplinger, Ilean and her husband Scotty Lindsey, all of Lyle, and John and his wife Linda Ripplinger of The Dalles; five grandchildren, Daniel and his wife Chrystal Ripplinger of Albany, Karen and her husband Darin Jones of Sweet Home, Tammy Ripplinger and fiancee JJ Thompson of Salem, Robert “Robbie” Ripplinger of Kalispell, Mont., and Chantel Ripplinger of The Dalles; great grandchildren Kari and Amanda Jones of Sweet Home and a sister, Viola Hickle of The Dalles. She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Ripplinger on June 26, 1997, a son, Kenny in 1953, her parents, her brothers; Arthur, Raymond and Rueben Huft, and her sisters; Deloris Williams and Doris Huft.

Funeral services were scheduled at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, with Rev. Todd Unger officiating. Interment followed at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle St., The Dalles, OR 97058.

Mary ‘Liz’ Elizabeth Rodriguez

Mary “Liz” Elizabeth Rodriguez, 71, The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003.

She was born July 4, 1932, in Seattle, an adopted child to Jesse Homer and Violet Ora (Ainsworth) Braden. She was raised and lived in Seattle until moving to The Dalles in 1978. She worked as a bookkeeper for Lance Apparel Clothing Store until its closure. In the early ’80s she started working at Stadleman’s Fruit and retired from Cascade Fruit as a fruit grader in 1997.

She enjoyed her family, the outdoors, camping, fishing, reading and crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her husband, Francisco V. Rodriguez, whom she married Oct. 9, 1980, in The Dalles; her son, Raul Avila Valles; her niece, Rosa Valles and her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Schrader, all of The Dalles.
Viewing visitation will be at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 2 to 7 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday.

Services will be held at Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, with Asa Jenson officiating. Interment will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery on Threemile Road.

Geneva E. Lindsay

Geneva E. Lindsay, 96, a former resident of The Dalles, died Oct. 5, 2003 in Bellefonte, Pa.

She was born June 4, 1907 in Syracuse, Neb., to Fred Brantley Davis and Lula Clary Davis.

She was a 1924 graduate of Syracuse High School and had attended the University of Nebraska.

She was a public school teacher for many years. When she first started teaching she taught all grades in a one room school house. Later she taught high school chemistry and physics, but eventually found her true calling in teaching music to primary school children.

She was a trained soprano and sang solos for church choirs. She also taught piano and passed on her love of music to her children.

Survivors include one daughter, Susan Lyden and her husband, John Smith, Lake Oswego; son, Bruce Lindsay and his wife, Laura Simon, State College, Pa.; three grandchildren, Camden Lindsay, State College; John Lyden, Trinidad, Colo.; and Johanna Goodlin, Marysville, Calif.; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one grandson, Dylan Brantley Balch-Lindsay, who died in 2002.

Funeral services were private. Burial was at Meyer Cemetery, Benner Township, Pa. Memorials may be made to the Centre Crest Nursing Home, 502 E. Howard St., Bellefonte, Pa. 16823.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Helen Turner

Elizabeth “Betty” Helen Turner, 88, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003.

She was born July 13, 1915, in Portland, the older of two children to Harmon J. and Caroline (Cobb) Lynch. She was raised in Portland and graduated from Girls Poly High School.

She married Ralph H. Turner on Aug. 31, 1940, in Portland, and they lived in Portland. After he retired, they moved to Salem in the mid 1970’s and her husband died Feb. 4, 1987. She moved to The Dalles on Aug. 1, 2000.

She was a member of United Methodist Church and enjoyed homemaking, cooking, knitting, the outdoors, gardening and fishing.

She is survived by two sons, James L. and his wife, Christy Turner, The Dalles; Mike and his wife, Maggie Turner, Portland; five grandchildren, Benjamin, Amy, Katy, Vanessa, Chanel; four great-grandchildren, Harmony, Ethan, Connor, Dylan and one sister, Patricia Etchison, Beaverton.

By her request, no services will be held. Cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

William F. “Pal” Wallace

William F. “Pal” Wallace, 84, died in Redmond on Oct. 3, 2003 of natural causes.

He was born July 3, 1919 in Vancouver, Wash., to Will and Rose (Gribbon) Wallace.

He spent the majority of his life as a wheat and cattle rancher in Sherman County. He also enjoyed traveling, fishing, motorcycles and gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret “Maggie”; daughters, Mary Wallace, Redmond; Casey Wallace, Dallas; a son, Michael Wallace, Coos Bay; grandchildren, Will Wallace, Mary and Eli Kaczka.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Virginia McIntyre and Shirley Bachellor.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Central Oregon Home Health and Hospice of Bend or the Sherman County Museum of Moro. Arrangements are in care of Autumn Funerals.

May C. Church

May C. Church, 81, a former resident of The Dalles, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003 at her home in Chehalis, Wash.

She was born in Mt. Hood to Henry and Ida Issil on May 4, 1922. She had lived the last 14 years in Chehalis with her husband, John J. Church.

She was a member of the Eastern Stars for many years. She also enjoyed and spent many hours working in her flower gardens and reading from her Bible.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, John D. Church and Donald Tobias, both in Washington; daughters Sunnie Tobias, California, and Patricia Ann Dillon, Washington; brothers Glenn Issil, California, and Barney Issil, Oregon; sisters Nina Aardal, California, and Sunnie Combs, Washington.

Visitation may be made from noon to 5 p.m. today at Brown Mortuary service in Chehalis, which is in charge of arrangements.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Anderson Funeral Home in Hood River. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.

Udena Marie Gardner

Udena Marie Gardner, 74, a longtime resident of The Dalles and Dufur, died at the local hospital following a sudden illness on Monday, Sept. 29, 2003.
She was born Feb.y 27, 1929, in Snoqualmie Falls, Wash., the youngest of three children to John and Udena Marie (Shoemaker) Titus. She was raised and attended schools in the Seattle area.
She and her husband, Jean Uhalde moved to Dufur in the early 1960s . She later married Robert L. Gardner in 1976, and they moved to The Dalles in 1977.
After his retirement, they moved to Maryhill and back to The Dalles in 2000.
She was a member of Rebekah Lodge in Dufur and enjoyed her family, bowling, and life.
She is survived by her husband Robert Gardner, The Dalles; daughters, Terri and her husband, Ed Menzel, Pacific, Wash.; Sandy Uhalde, Portland; sons; Mike Voss, Auburn, Wash.; Don Uhalde and his wife, Carmagene, Dufur; Steve Uhalde and his wife Kathy, The Dalles; stepsons, Robert and James Gardner, both of Maryhill; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Don, and a son, Terry, in 1982.
Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, Oct. 1, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Thursday, from 9 to 12:00 p.m..
Graveside services will be held at the The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003 at 1 p.m.
Asa Jenson will be officiating.

Martina Gene Miller

Martina Gene Miller, 70, a resident of The Dalles, died at a Portland hospital Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2003.

She was born Sept. 22, 1933, in Red Lake, Minn., the second of seven children to Charles Lewis and Alice Marie (Munnell) Smith. She grew up in Redby, Minn.

She moved to Portland in the early 1960s and married Leroy Gilbert Thoreson in 1965, in Vancouver, Wash. They moved to Tygh Valley in the late 1960s and lived there until 1984.

She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and Chippewa Indian Tribe in Minn. She worked many years as a CNA for Valley Vista Nursing Home. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren: playing bingo, reading, crocheting and Indian Pow Wows.

She is survived by four children, Ruth Adele Smith, Deerwood, Minn; Nancy Lynn Hagman, Bemidji, Minn; Keith Douglas Smith and Kevin Lee Thoreson, both of The Dalles; 10 grandchildren; four brothers, Myron Louis Smith and his wife, Teresa, Redby, Minn; Robert William Sayers and his wife, Nancy Bloomington, Minn; Joseph Raymond Smith, Pendleton; Kenneth Leo Smith, The Dalles; two sisters, Dorothy (Dottie) Louise Frey, The Dalles; Barbara Marie Silva, Salem and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

Viewing visitation will be held on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 5:00 p.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 11:00 a.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

An interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Portland Skyline Memorial.

Verne Edward Mobley

Verne Edward Mobley, 91, a resident of Madras and a former resident of Kent, died Sept. 29 at an assisted living center.
He was born May 29, 1912 in Goldendale to Victor and Pearl (Slaughter) Mobley.

He married Margaret (Dunlap) Mobley on Oct. 23, 1935 in Goldendale.
He was a rancher in the Shaniko area from 1943 until 1972 when he and his wife moved to Antelope.

While in Antelope, he served as mayor for approximately two years.
In 1982 the couple returned to Kent and remained until they moved to Madras in October of 2001.

He belonged to the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association as well as the Odd Fellows Lodge. He enjoyed being with his family and had a fondness for music.
Survivors include his wife, his children and their spouses, Verne and Pat Mobley, Kent; Keith and Diane Mobley, Dufur; Ronald and Jan Mobley, West Linn; Donald and Linda Mobley, Madras; and Krista and Leo Coelsch, Moro; brother, Merle Mobley, Forest Grove; sister, Edna Callahan, Yakima; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

His daughter, Mary, two brothers and a sister preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1:30 p.m. at East Cascade Assisted Living Center Building A, 175 N.E. 16th St., in Madras.
Final disposition will be private.

Memorials may be made to the Sherman County Historical Society, Moro, OR 97039.

Arrangements are by Bel Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras.

Edna Mae Shotwell

A memorial tribute service will be held Monday, Oct. 6, at 2 p.m. for Edna Mae Shotwell at the Hood River Church of Christ (1512 Tucker Rd.), in Hood River.

She was born March 29, 1942 to Ira and Fern (Stroup) Pirtle in Phoenix, Ariz. She died in Parkdale on Oct. 1, 2003 at the age of 61 after a long battle with cancer.

As a girl she lived in the Portland/Vancouver area. She attended elementary and junior high in Vancouver, and high school at Columbia Christian Academy in Portland.

She graduated from Wy’East High School in Odell in 1960. She later attended Texas Christian University, Abilene Christian University, and Columbia Christian College. On Aug. 23, 1959 she married Silas Shotwell in Vancouver. They were married for 44 years.

In the early 1960s the Shotwells lived on G Street in The Dalles and served as a ministry team at the Church of Christ in this city.

She loved to read, cook, sew, and travel. She loved her family and always put them first in her life. She was an active member of the Machine Embroiderers of Oregon and Washington (M.E.O.W) and also sang with Sweet Adelines.

She was a devout Christian. In addition to working with her husband in church ministry, they counseled ministers and missionaries in a program called Safety Net and operated a retreat center in Parkdale named “Higher Ground.” They were also a “presenting couple” in Marriage Encounter. She authored articles for Christian magazines and was a frequent speaker at Retreats and Lectureships.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Silas Shotwell, Parkdale; five children: Suzanne Parker and Nathan Shotwell, both of Los Angeles; Jeff Shotwell, Decatur, Texas; Sarah Croy, Salem; and Meagan Shotwell, Parkdale; seven grandchildren; her father, Ira Pirtle, Vancouver; a brother, Rosco Pirtle, Vancouver; and two sisters, Sandra Reagan and Nancy Pierce, both of Vancouver; nieces and nephews and a host of friends around the world.

Memorial contributions in her name may be given to National Church Growth, and sent to Anderson’s Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Rd., Hood River, Ore., 97031.

Paul Taylor Hulse

Paul Taylor Hulse, 86, a resident of Dufur, died at his home on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003.

He was born Dec. 4, 1916, in Moro, the oldest of 3 children to Roy Paul and Mary Jane (Taylor) Hulse. He was raised on the farm on Tygh Ridge and graduated from Dufur High School with the class of 1935.

Paul served in the U.S. Army during WWII and returned to Dufur after the war. He married Coramae Hoffer on March 31, 1946 in The Dalles and together farmed on Tygh Ridge and the Dufur Valley.

He was a member of Dufur Christian Church and had served as chairman of the board, Masonic Lodge, Oregon Wheat Growers League, Cattleman’s Association, Dufur Recreation Board and R.E.A. He had been active with Wasco County Fair and was the 1st to have a camping trailer at the Wasco County Fair. He enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren, loved The Trail Band, reading, the outdoors, hunting and the ocean.

Paul is survived by his wife Coramae; his son, Michael P. Hulse; his daughter, Carmagene and her husband, Don Uhalde, all of Dufur; grandchildren, Taylor Hulse and Chelsie Hulse, both of Dufur; Jordan Uhalde, Bend; Joshua and his wife, Vanessa Uhalde, Dufur; Russ and his wife, Michele Harrington, Benton City, WA; Rick and his wife, Bobbi Harrington, The Dalles; Latitia Dousay, The Dalles; 8 great-grandchildren and one brother, William L. and his wife, Roseanne Hulse, Dufur. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Janet Mary Chamberlain.

Viewing visitation will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Dufur Christian Church with Pastor Bob Peterson and Asa Jenson officiating.

Mary S. Durbin

Mary S. Durbin, 82, a former resident of The Dalles and Hood River, died Oct. 6, 2003.

She was born in Yakima, Wash. and married Willard Durbin on Oct. 7, 1937.

She lived in The Dalles for 20 years, in the Hood River-White Salmon area for 15 years and in Portland for two years.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Gladstone Park Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Hood River Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Richard L., A. William and Robert N. Durbin; her sister, Barbara Rupert; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia J. Durbin Evans.

Graveside services were held Oct. 7 at the IOOF Cemetery in The Dalles.

Arrangements are by Cornerstone Funeral Service.

Carl Marcel ‘Cody’ Dupuis

Carl Marcel “Cody” Dupuis, 53, died Oct. 9, 2003.

He was born Feb. 18, 1950, in Ellensburg, Wash. to Fern (Huss) and Harry J. Dupuis. He was raised in Wamic.

He was a salesman for Sears. He lived in the Portland area for more than 30 years. In 1969, he married Audene Snodgrass.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Brent; a daughter, Tamara; parents Fern and Harry Dupuis; a sister and her husband, Tina and John Bird; and nieces and nephews.

Remembrances may be made to Mt. Hood Hospice. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Alternatives.

Graveside services in Wasco County are pending and will be announced at a later date

Edward Donald (Don) Williams

Noted civic leader and historic preservation activist Edward Donald (Don) Williams died Oct. 13, 2003 at age 87 in The Dalles.

A World War II veteran, Mr. Williams ran retail businesses in The Dalles, Don Williams Hardward, L’Ance Apparel and Williams 1870. He was also a cherry orchardist. He and his wife Barbara ran The Williams House Bed and Breakfast for 13 years. He was a devoted parishioner of The First Church of Christian Science of The Dalles. He and his daughter Lora owned The Williams Building in The Dalles as well.

He was active in his support of the Oregon Historic Preservation Society, The Oregon Symphony and his Chi Psi Fraternity (University of Washington). He was notably active in The Dalles with historic preservation, on a number of projects.

He is survived by his wife Barbara, sons Mike, Umatilla, and Robert (Debra), Hillsboro, daughter Lora, Oahu, Hawaii and nephew Anthony Hill, Seattle.

Remembrances can be made to The Oregon Veterans Home. A family celebration of life has been held.
