Frank Charles Actis Sr.

Frank Charles Actis, Sr., 93, a resident of The Dalles area since 1969, died at a local care facility Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

Frank was born May 27, 1910 in Walkerville, Mont., the youngest of three children to Frank and Elivia (Gozzano) Actis. He grew up and attended schools in Butte, Mont.

He married Ruth Eleanor Grimes on Sept. 20, 1929 in Anaconda, Mont. and they lived in Montana until moving to The Dalles in 1969.

He had several small businesses in Montana and sold insurance. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and enjoyed people.

He is survived by his son and his wife, Frank C. Actis, Jr. and Peggy, Denver, Colo; three grandchildren and their spouses, Steve and Teresa Actis, Katy, Texas; Elaine and Chris Davis, Edmond, Okla.; Frank J. Actis, Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight great-grandchildren, John, Cecilia, Brian, Laura, Jeff, Tony, Lisa, Kevin; and four nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth in May 1996.

Viewing visitation will held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003 from 2 to 5 PM and Monday, from 8:30 to 10 AM.
Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Monday, Oct. 20, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Todd Unger officiating. Interment will follow at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, PO Box 41, The Dalles, OR 97058.

George William Pulliam

George William Pulliam, 85, a resident of The Dalles, died at the local hospital on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.

He was born August 12, 1918 in Sisters, the older of 2 children to Grover George and Fannie Lucretia (Yarber) Pulliam. He moved with his parents and younger brother to the Celilo area when he was a child. He graduated from The Dalles High School in the class of 1936 and served in the U.S. Army during WWII, stationed in North Africa.

After the service, George returned to The Dalles and worked as a meat cutter. He worked at The Dalles Meat Market, Brady’s Grocery, Sawyer’s Thriftway and retired after 30 years.

He married Alice Helen Raile on July 5, 1953 in The Dalles.

He was an active member of The Dalles Evangelical Church, Senior Center, Eagles and Moose Lodges. He enjoyed building projects and all forms of dance with his wife including waltzes and square dancing.

George is survived by his wife, Alice, of 50 years, The Dalles; his daughter and her husband, Marsha and Dennis Reed, Tigard; his son, John G. Pulliam, The Dalles; 2 grandchildren and their spouses, Michael and Lorenna Thompson; Sarah and Rob VanDyke, both of Porland, and one brother, John Pulliam, Denver, CO.

Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Monday, Oct. 20, from 2 to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Funeral services will be held at The Dalles Evangelical Church on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. with Tim Clemenson officiating. Interment will follow at The Dalles Odd Fellows Cemetery on Cherry Heights Road.

Memorials may be made to The Dalles Evangelical Church, 1001 E 12th St., The Dalles, OR 97058 or Mid Columbia Senior Center, 1112 W 9th St., The Dalles, OR 97058.

Lee Dennis Reed

Lee Dennis Reed, 62, The Dalles, died at a local care facility on Friday, Oct. 10, 2003.

He was born Feb. 28, 1941, in Bend, the second of three boys to Dennis Dane and Elna (Lester) Reed.

The family moved to Dufur in 1944 and he was raised in Dufur.

Mr. Reed lived in the Dufur area and in the late ’60s moved to Wyoming, working in the timber industry.

He enjoyed various outdoor activities. He moved back to The Dalles in the early ’90s.

Mr. Reed is survived by his daughter, Kayci Caldwell, The Dalles; two brothers and spouses, Eldon and Ber Reed, Dufur; Curt and Jane Reed, Kremmling, Colo., and many friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be held at the Dufur Pastime Saloon and Restaurant, 25 S. Heimrich St., Dufur, on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m.
Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Carl ‘Cody’ Dupuis

Carl “Cody” Marcel Dupuis, 53, died on Oct. 9, 2003 in Portland.

He was born in Ellensburg, Wash. to Fern and Harry Dupuis. He grew up in Wamic where he attended grade school and graduated from Wasco County Union High School in 1968.

He joined the Navy after school but was given a discharge after he injured his shoulder.

In 1969 he married Audine Snodgrass (his high school sweetheart) in Dufur.
He was a football and baseball all star and enjoyed sports. He spent many years coaching his kids.

He was a salesman for Smith’s Home Furnishings, Sears and others. He lived in Portland for more than 30 years.

Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Audine, Troutdale; a son, Brent, Los Angeles, Calif.; a daughter, Tamara, Sandy; his parents, Harry and Fern Dupuis, Tygh Valley; sister and brother-in-law, Tina and John Bird, Grass Valley; nephews, Travis Dupuis and wife, Charlotte, Portland; Jeremy and Marc Bird, Grass Valley; nieces, Carolyn Dupuis, The Dalles and Tionie Bird, Grass Valley; and numerous in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Dupuis, in 1996.
Graveside services will be held at the Lone Pine Cemetery in Wamic on Oct. 26 at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to charities of the donors choice.

Bradford Alvin James

Bradford Alvin James, 53, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.

He was born April 23, 1950 in Grand Rapids, Minn., the youngest of three children to Ervin Rueben and Norma Louise (Peterson) James. He lived in Minnesota and moved to The Dalles in 1959 and attended Chenowith School.

He served in the U.S. Army in 1967 and returned to The Dalles after his discharge. He also lived in Pilot Rock for 12 years in the 1970’s and 80’s.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, taxidermy and Indian lore.

He is survived by his father, E.R. James, Vancouver, Wash.; three sisters, Diane L. (James) Nail, Pahrump, Nev.; Sandra K. (James) Salisbury, Vancouver; Suzanne M. James, Vancouver; his brother, Jon B. Duncan, Bend; his step-son, Robert Bynum, Pendleton; his step-daughter, Sharyn Bynum, Pendleton; five nephews, Donald J. Salisbury, Gladstone; Darren J. Salisbury, Vancouver; R. Scott Sanders, Gardnerville, Nev.; Caleb and Elijah Duncan, both of Bend; and his niece, Melissa A. Salisbury, Vancouver. He was preceded in death by his mother Norma L. (Peterson) Duncan in February 1995.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, PO Box 553, The Dalles, OR 97058.

Donald A. Bowen

Donald Andrew Bowen, 76, a native of The Dalles, died on Oct. 19, 2003.

He was born May 22, 1927 in The Dalles where he grew up and graduated from The Dalles High School in 1945.

During World War II he served in the Navy VS program as an aviation cadet.

He graduated from Oregon State University in 1961 with a degree in electrical engineering and earned a master’s degree in systems management from the University of Southern California. In 1977 he married Barbara Corey of The Dalles.

As an aerospace engineer, he had been employed at Lockheed Missiles and Space, working at the headquarters in Sunnyvale, Calif. and for Sperry Gyroscope as a field engineer in the U.S. and overseas locations including Africa and England.

He was a test engineer and supervisor for the NASA Agena and Gemini space programs. After 26 years with Lockheed, he retired in 1987.

He and his wife returned to Oregon, where they lived for 6 1/2 years before going back to California for two years. They returned to Oregon in 1999.

He enjoyed backpacking in the Sierra Mountains and golf.
In addition to his wife, Portland; survivors include sons Dane, Denton, N.C.; William Corey McCammon, Dallas; Brian Bowman, Hillsboro; daughters, Jill Mitchell, Eldorado, Calif., and Dawn Scott, Dallas; brother John (Jack) Bowen, The Dalles; sister, Mary Holmes, Portland; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will take place Saturday, Oct. 25, at Claremont Clubhouse in Beaverton, beginning at 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Odyssey Health Care Foundation.

Vivian Bonnette

Vivian, a resident of Dallesport, Washington, died Oct. 22, 2003.

She was born on April 13, 1927, in Boyceville, Wisconsin, one of three children to Frank and Ella Myers. She grew up in Glendale, Wisconsin where she graduated from St. Clare High School in 1945.

She met her first husband, Al Rinke in Moorehead, Minnesota and married him January 14, 1946. They had two children: Sherey and Terry. Vivian was very active in the growing years of her children. In particular, she was very involved in all sports including baseball, basketball and football. In Aug. 29, 1976 her husband died, and Vivian was left to care for the family on her own. In 1982 Romeo Bonnette entered her life. They married on Dec. 31, 1983.

She was a homemaker, business woman, and community advocate for most of her life. Most importantly, she was called “friend” by many. One of the things that brought her great joy was travel to visit friends that had been made over the years.

She is survived by her husband Romeo; son Terry Rinke of Leavenworth, Washington; her daughter Sherey Shoble of Portage, Indiana; her stepsons, Kenneth, Kevin, and Kurt Bonnette; and stepdaughter Pamela Hamilton. She is survived by her two sisters, Eloise and Joyce. She is also survived by seven grand-children and one great-grand-daughter.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Covenant Christian Community, 2630 East 18th Street, with Pastor David Clear officiating. Visitation will be held at Spencer Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 24, 2003 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Remembrances may be made to The Norman Clear Memorial Fund in care of Covenant Christian Community.

Kathyleen Dufur Larie

Kathyleen Dufur Larie, 83, a descendent and former resident of Dufur, died at a Portland care facility on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003.

She was born April 22, 1920 in Dufur, the younger of two children to George and Ruby (Dufur) Gill. She was raised in Dufur, graduated from Dufur High School, and then attended the Dalles School of Nursing. She joined the U.S. Army Nursing Cadets and worked in a New York City hospital taking care of injured soldiers.

She returned to Oregon and married Charles Howard Larie in Dufur, Aug. 18, 1946. She worked at Providence Hospital as head surgical nurse and later was the school nurse at Centennial, Barlow and Gresham High Schools.

During the mid-1970’s, the family returned to Dufur and she worked as Director of Nurses at Columbia Basin Nursing Home. In 2000, Kathyleen and Harriette’s Century Farm, became a Bed and Breakfast operated by Harriette’s sons, Chuck and Bill Moe. Kathyleen returned to Portland with her sister to live at Cherry Wood Village Retirement Home.

She was a member of Dufur Methodist Church, Ramsey Park Grange and the Wally Barnium Air Stream Club and enjoyed traveling.

Kathyleen is survived by three children, Mary Ann Place and her husband, David, Ronald George Larie, Richard Alan Larie, all of Portland; three grandchildren, Candice, Steven, Jennifer; two great-grandchildren, her sister, Harriette Moe, Portland, and her two cats, Sam and Shadow.

Funeral services will be held at Smith Callaway Chapel on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. with Rev. Jerry Holland and Asa Jenson officiating. Interment will be at the Henderson Pioneer Cemetery in Dufur.

Memorials may be made to Dufur Methodist Church.

A reception will be held after service at Dufur Methodist Church in Dufur.

Jessie Gordon

Jessie Gordon, 91, a former resident of The Dalles, died on Oct. 23, 2003 in Garibaldi.

She was born Sept. 7, 1912 to Irwin and Nelly Pike in The Dalles. She was the third of five children.

She completed grade and high school in Grass Valley and attended bookkeeping/secretarial school in Portland and Eugene.

She married, moved to Hermiston and later divorced. She married Lester Gordon and the family moved to Pilot Rock. He died in 1962.

She worked at Pendleton Auto Parts, then moved to Hermiston where she worked for the Oregon State University Experimental Station for 15 years. She retired in 1979 and moved to The Dalles. In 1999 she moved to Garibaldi.

Survivors include her son Irwin and daughter-in-law, Jan, Garibaldi; a sister, Veri May, Kennewick, Wash.; a stepson, Clyde Gordon, Wasilla, Alaska; a stepdaughter, Grace Neely, Ashland; five grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in The Dalles. A private inurnment of ashes will take place at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.

Memorials may be made to the St. Paul Episcopal Church Memorial Fund.
Arrangements are under the care of Waud’s Funeral Home, 1414 Third St., Tillamook, OR 97141.

William (Bill) J. Gould

William (Bill) J. Gould, 83, a resident of The Dalles, died at his home from complications of Parkinson's disease on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003.

He was born January 18, 1920 in Ellensburg, Wash., the fourth of five children to Samuel LeRoy and Edna Mae (Snyder) Gould. He was raised in Ellensburg and graduated from Yakima High School in the Class of 1938.

He married Marybee Elvira Giffin on June 3, 1939 in Wapato, Wash. They moved to West Seattle where they lived for 55 years and raised five children. In 1998, they moved to The Dalles to be close to their daughter and family.

Bill worked for Burlington Northern R.R. and retired in 1980 as a Western Freight Claims Agent. He enjoyed trains, reading, music and gardening.

He is survived by five children, Margery McKay, Longview, Wash.; Mary Lynn Schreiner and her husband, Thomas, Aloha, Ore.; William Joseph Gould and his wife, Charlene, Auburn, Wash.; Laura McGlothlin and her husband, Tim, The Dalles; Leslie Gould and her husband, Walter Lowrie, Tacoma, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Thornton, Julietta, Ida. and Margery Whitmore, Seattle, Wash. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marybee on February 27, 2000 and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held at Washington Memorial/ Bonney Watson, 16445 International Blvd S, Seattle, Wash. 98188, on Nov. 1, 2003 at 3 p.m. Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of The Gorge, 751 Myrtle St., The Dalles, OR 97058.
