Hazel M. Beery

Dec. 5, 1906 - March 22, 2001

Hazel M. "Chappie" Beery, 94, of Albany died Thursday at Alterra Wynwood Apartments in Albany.

She was born in Drayton, N.D., to Nelson and Annie Laurie (Peppard) Chapman. She moved to Eugene in 1924 and graduated in 1930 from Pacific Christian Hospital Nursing School.

She married Don V. Beery in N0v. 24, 1933 in Portland. They lived in Corvallis throughout their marriage. Mr. Beery died in 1982.

Mrs. Beery worked for Corvallis doctors and for Oregon State University Health Services. She retired in 1977.

In 1989 she won $50,000 on the money game show of the Oregon Lottery.

She belonged to the Retired Nurses Association, the Corvallis Duplicate Bridge Club, the Tillicum Dance Club and the Corvallis Country Club. She volunteered time at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library.

Mrs. Beery enjoyed gardening, bridge and taking trips to Reno.

Surviving are son David of Oakland, Calif.; brother Herb Chapman of Eugene; sisters Helen Huston of Springfield and Kathryn Christianson of Coburg; and many nieces and nephews, including niece Donna Brokken of Corvallis.

Brothers Theodore and Lawrence Chapman and sisters Myrtle Walder and Elaine Christison preceded her in death.

A gathering of her friends will be at 1 p.m. today at Burton's Restaurant in Corvallis.

Contributions in her name may be made to the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 N.W. Buchanan Ave., Corvallis, Ore. 97330.

Donald DeMars

Aug. 11, 1944 - March 22, 2001

Former Albany resident Donald James DeMars, 56, of Corvallis died of liver cancer Thursday at home.

Mr. DeMars was born in Westhope, N.D., and grew up in Albany. He was one of Albany Union High School's track stars in the class of 1962.

He married Jeanine Marie Robare on April 16, 1966, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany.

After earning his master's degree in forestry from Oregon State University, Mr. DeMars went to work for the U.S. Forest Service at laboratories in Portland. He pursued doctoral studies in forestry at the University of Washington in the late 1970s.

In 1982, the Forest Service transferred him to Juneau, Alaska, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, crabbing, basketball and archery. He retired in May of 2000, and he and his wife traveled to England.

After his cancer was diagnosed, the couple moved to Corvallis so that he could undergo treatments at the Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland.

Surviving are wife Jeanine; son David of Juneau; daughter Angela Kemp of Corvallis; mother Gladys Wendling of Lebanon; brothers Gary of Salem, Ala., and Erwin of Portland; sisters Vera Shoberg of John Day and Marilyn Beverly of Milpitas, Calif.; and granddaughters Cassie and Sarah.

Three sisters preceded him in death: Linda Willis in April of 2000; Rosalyn LaLond in August of 1987; and Orea Louise DeMarrs in 1940, in infancy.

Mr. DeMars' funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Albany, with the Rev. John Henderson officiating. Richard Triska will conduct the graveside service following the funeral. It will be at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Benton Hospice Service Inc., or to the American Liver Foundation. They may be sent in care of DeMoss-Durdan Garden Chapel, 815 N.W. Buchanan Ave., Corvallis, Ore. 97330.

Virginia Rowland

May 29, 1924 - March 21, 2001

Virginia Louise Rowland, 76, of Corvallis died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Mrs. Rowland was born in Fairfield, Maine, the daughter of Harry and Josephine (Luce) Getchell. She moved to Linwood, Calif., in 1933.

She married Arthur L. Rowland in 1944 in Yuma, Ariz. They moved to Corvallis in 1960. Mrs. Rowland enjoyed her home and liked to travel.

Surviving are husband Arthur; sons Lloyd and Kenneth, both of Corvallis; and four grandchildren.

Daughter Carol S. Rowland died earlier.

A private, family graveside service will be held. DeMoss Durdan Garden Chapel is handling arrangements.

Sylvia L. Lee

Oct. 31, 1925 - March 1, 2001

Sylvia L. Lee, 75, of Corvallis died Thursday at Heart of the Valley Nursing Center.

She was born in Joliet, Mont., to Charles and Olive (Brooks) Lee. She grew up in Enterprise and graduated from Enterprise High School. She came to Corvallis and attended Oregon State College. She earned her bachelor's degree in home economics education at Oregon State College and her master's and doctoral degrees in the subject at the Columbia University Teachers College in New York City.

After teaching in high schools in Coos Bay, Bend and Port Angeles, Wash., she was Washington State Supervisor for Vocational Home and Family Life Education and Washington State advisor for Future Homemakers of America.

She had been an assistant professor at Ohio State University and became head of home economics at Oregon State University in 1968. She retired as professor emeritus in 1985.

She was known for her volunteer work and handiwork and liked reading and working crossword and logic puzzles.

She belonged to many organizations connected to her career, including The American and Oregon Home Economics associations. She served on the national board of directors of the National Association of Future Homemakers of America, and on the group's teacher education task force.

She also belonged to and did volunteer work for the OSU Folk Club.

Survivors include nephew Terrence Glover of Leavenworth, Wash., and nieces Judith Eichinger of San Antonio, Texas, and Irene Lawson of Knoxville, Tenn.

Brothers Thomas and Charles Lee preceded her in death.

Service plans will be announced.

Contributions in Mrs. Lee's name may be made to the OSU College of Home Economics and Education, OSU Foundation, in care of McHenry Funeral Home, 206 N. Fifth St., Corvallis, Ore. 97330.

Vernon D. Van Dusen

Sept. 20, 1939 - Feb. 28, 2001

Former Lebanon resident Vernon Duane Van Dusen, 61, of Bend died Wednesday.

He was born in Cottage Grove and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1957. He joined the Navy and later was a saw operator at Willamette Industries. He also worked in auto sales. He moved to Bend in the mid '70s.

He married F. Beverly Napier in Bend in 1998. He loved hunting, fishing, downhill skiing and studying the history of World War II and the Northwest.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Lanez Vauble of Albany, Shelley Schaberg of Salem, and Vanessa Kercher, Sylena Henneus and Andrea Alford of Bend, Vonda Alford of Dexel, Mo., son Scott Van Dusen of Port Orchard, Wash.; mother Clara Van Dusen of Lebanon; brother Richard Van Dusen of Lebanon; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

Memorials contributions may be made in his name to Bend-La Pine Hospice in care of Autumn Funerals, 485 Larch Ave., Redmond, Ore. 97756.

Gordon E. Ballard

May 22, 1930 - Feb. 22, 2001

Gordon E. Ballard, 70, died Feb. 22 in Albany.

He was born to Judd and Alice (Howard) Ballard. He married Ferne Graham in St. Andrew's Church in Philipsburg, Mont.

His wife and daughters traveled all over the United States and the world during his 30 years in the Navy. While the couple was stationed in Morocco, their 16-year-old daughter, Bonna Jean, was killed in a motorcyle accident.

He was proud that a mountain in Antarctica was named after him.

The couple retired in Albany.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years; daughters Jody Ballard and Susan Lindsay; brothers John Pearson, Bob Ballard and David Ballard; sisters Judy Bob and Bonna Johnson; sister Bonna Johnson; five grandchildren; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Gordon F. Ballard School Fund, in cared of Granite High School, P.O. Box 400, Philipsburg, Mont. 59858.

Services were held in Philipsburg under the direction of K.T. Riddle Funeral Homes.

Hattie B. Parent

Dec. 22, 1916 - June 20, 2001

Hattie B. Parent, 84, of Lebanon died Wednesday at home.

Born in Minot, N.D., she was the daughter of John and Hazel (Bobst) Egger. She graduated from high school in Abercrombie, N.D. She lived in Flaxville and St. Ignatius, Mont., and Sunnyvale, Calif., before moving to Lebanon in 1961.

She was married to Patrick F. Parent, who died in 1978.

Mrs. Parent enjoyed sewing and was known as "the doll clothes lady" for her 20 years of participation in the Elks Bazaar.

Surviving are son Larry of Salem; daughters Linda Parent of Lebanon, Judith Parent of Salem, Patricia Tungett of Sweet Home and Lila Wood of Meadow Vista, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Son Darrell died this year on May 14.

Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Huston-Jost Funeral Home. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lebanon I.O.O.F. cemetery, with Pastor Bruce Little officiating. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Judy Stackhouse

June 6, 1940 - June 22, 2001

Judy A. Stackhouse, 61, of Lebanon died Friday at Lebanon Community Hospital.

She was born in Beverly, Mass., the daughter of William and Barbara (MacCarthy) Johnson. She moved to California when she was 14 years old.

She married John P. Stackhouse March 31, 1956, in Carson City, Nev. The couple lived in California on the Monterey Peninsula before moving to Lebanon two years ago.

She enjoyed making crafts and looking for and collecting antiques.

She is survived by husband John P.; sons John S. of Scio, Chris of Sacramento, Calif., and Lance of Watsonville, Caliif.; daughter Sheryl Lira of Salinas, Calif.; brother Jack DiRubio of San Jose, Calif.; and sisters Ellie Stackpole of Lodi, Calif., and Kathy Armitage of Dublin, Calif. There are nine grandchildren.

Private, family services are planned. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
