Theodore 'Ted' C. Johnson
Aug. 29, 1907 - May 24, 2001

Theodore 'Ted' C. Johnson of Bend died of natural causes May 24. He was 93.

The graveside service was held Saturday at Valley View Memorial Park.

Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 29, 1907, in Fowler, Kan. He graduated from high school in Kansas and attended flight school in Texas.

He married Helen Johnson in 1932, in Cheyenne, Wyo. She died in 1969.

They moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1940, where Mr. Johnson worked in an aircraft plant as a welder. They moved to Oregon in 1949.

He married his second wife, Wanda, in 1970. She died in 1980. He then married his wife Juanita in 1981, in Bend.

Mr. Johnson was a member of Church of the Nazarene in Bend.

He was a ventriloquist who enjoyed playing piano, mandolin and acting with his dummy 'Bogi.' He also wrote poetry and enjoyed putting on skits. He also was an inventor and invented an efficient wood stove and a pogo stick with a diesel piston for power.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita of Bend; one son, Theo of Gresham; one daughter, Ronadean 'Ronnie' Kelly of Vancouver, Wash.; two brothers, Robert and Willis, both of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Nazarene.

John Elvin Doty
Feb. 26, 1911 - May 26, 2001

John Elvin Doty of Bend died at a local nursing facility Saturday. He was 90.

No formal service will be held.

Mr. Doty was born Feb. 26, 1911, in Missouri, to Clarence and Ivy Doty.

He worked primarily in oil rig equipment, as a mechanic and supervisor, in California.

Mr. Doty lived in Salem from the 1960s to the 1980s. He moved from Newport to Bend last year.

He enjoyed the outdoors, traveling and reading good books. Earlier in his life, he also enjoyed tennis and golf.

Survivors include his wife, Alma of Bend; three daughters, Jane Hope, Judith Thompson and Ellen Doty, all of Salem; and three grandchildren.

Autumn Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

May Lillian (Johnson) Kohler
May 22, 1920 - May 17, 2001

May Lillian (Johnson) Kohler of Portland died May 17 in Oregon City. She was 80.

The service was held May 21 at Skyline Memorial Gardens in Portland.

Mrs. Kohler was born May 22, 1920, in Warba, Minn.

She moved to Portland in 1947 and worked for the postal service for 21 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1980.

She was a part-time resident of Bend.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra Karren; three sons, Randy Mann, Thomas Joyce and Lewis Joyce Jr.; one sister, Thelma Quinnell; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Skyline Memorial Gardens was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Carl Bernson
March 26, 1922 - May 28, 2001

Donald Carl Bernson of Utah died of complications following abdominal surgery Monday. He was 79.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Berg Mortuary of Provo, and at 10 a.m. Friday at Heatheridge Stake Center in Orem, Utah. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Heatheridge Stake Center at 450 East 2000 North in Orem. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Charles City cemetery in St. Charles, Idaho.

Mr. Bernson was born March 26, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Carl and Eva (Stromness) Bernson. He graduated from the University of Utah and attended medical school at the University of Louisville in Kentucky, where he studied neurosurgery.

He served in the Naval Reserve in Kentucky, and later served in the Navy for two years and was given a medical discharge.

He married Neva Hubbard. They later divorced.

Mr. Bernson returned to Salt Lake City and practiced with Dr. Reed Harrow. In 1954, he re-entered the military and served in the Army for two years as a doctor in Munich, Germany. He came back to Salt Lake City and practiced at LDS and Primary Children's Hospital, and later at Cottonwood Hospital.

He married Tamara Pugmire in 1973, in Salt Lake City. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1979.

They lived in Bend, where Mr. Bernson practiced medicine for 17 years. They moved back to Utah in 1990, where he continued practicing neurosurgery for nine more years until his retirement in 2000.

He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Survivors include his wife, Tamara; six daughters, Annette Davis, Leslie Meilstrup, Karren Johnson, Jody Marvin, Jackie Grimm and Teresa Boswell; one son, Jeff Stock; one brother, Gene; one sister, Natalie Calderwood; 23 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Berg Mortuary in Provo, Utah, is in charge of arrangements.

Margie Lois Young
Jan. 12, 1907 - May 20, 2001

Margie Lois Young of Bend died May 20 at Judy Lee Foster Home. She was 94.

The memorial service was held Saturday, May 26, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bend.

Mrs. Young was born Jan. 12, 1907, in Jones County, Texas, to Mr. and Mrs. Phil Jefferies.

She married Clair S. Young on Jan. 19, 1924.

Mrs. Young came to Bend seven years ago.

Survivors include two sons, Phil of Redding, Calif., and Vern of Bend; five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Al.

Linda E. 'Lou' (Bodda) Sesock
June 10, 1933 - May 25, 2001

Linda E. 'Lou' (Bodda) Sesock of Bend died Friday of natural causes at a local care facility. She was 67.

The graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Deschutes Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Sesock was born June 10, 1933, in Onalaska, Wash.

She was a homemaker.

She married John Sesock on April 12, 1948, in Reno, Nev. He died in 1997.

Mrs. Sesock was a seamstress who enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She also enjoyed her grandchildren and all family activities.

Survivors include three daughters, Theresa Langley of Bend, Sally Harpole of Hampston, Va., and Susan Kirkpatrick of East Wenatchee, Wash.; six sisters, Delberta Vatalaro of Fairfield, Calif., Norma Harding of Sisters, Cynthia Upton and Connie Kyle, both of Cloverdale, Calif., Sybil Philippi of Olympia, Wash., and Anna Reeder of Portland; two brothers, Delbert Bodda of Eureka, Mont., and Harvey Bodda of Stayton; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, Delbert and Florence Bodda, one brother, Robert, and one grandchild.

Goldie Jeanette (Maxwell) Sommers
Jan. 19, 1913 - May 25, 2001

Goldie Jeanette (Maxwell) Sommers of La Pine died Friday at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. She was 88.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the American Legion Hall in La Pine.

Mrs. Sommers was born Jan. 19, 1913, in Iowa, to George and Mamie Maxwell. She was raised in Kalona, Iowa.

She married Ray Sommers in April 1939. He died in 1995.

They moved to Lakeview in the 1940s and lived in Klamath Falls in the 1950s and 1960s. They moved to La Pine in the 1970s.

Mrs. Sommers belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, National Arbor Day Foundation, United Seniors Association, and the South Central Cascade Mountaineers CB Association, Central Oregon Unit 173, under the handle 'Blondie.'

She enjoyed camping, fishing, mushroom picking and crocheting afghans and the like for her grandchildren. She also enjoyed working puzzles and writing in her journal.

Survivors include three daughters, Julie Perry and 'Dolly' Hawk, both of Klamath Falls, and Evelyn Fields of La Pine; two sons, Cecil of Beatty and Larry of Aloha; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one son, Gary.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Program or the Heart Program at St. Charles Medical Center, 2500 NE Neff Road, Bend 97701.

George A. Goshert Jr.
April 1, 1947 - May 23, 2001

George A. Goshert, Jr. of Bend died as a result of a motor vehicle accident May 23. He was 54.

The memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Mountain View High School auditorium. The graveside service and inurnment will be held at a later date in Hummelstown, Pa.

Mr. Goshert was born April 1, 1947, in Harrisburg, Pa., to George and Fern (Duncan) Goshert. He grew up in Hummelstown and graduated from Hershey High School.

He graduated from Drexel University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1970.

Upon graduation he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Army after completing the ROTC program at Drexel. He served in the Army on active duty from 1970 to 1971, then completed eight years in the Army Reserve. He was honorably discharged as a captain.

In 1966, Mr. Goshert began working for Pennsylvania Power and Light Company.

He married Gail Kraemer on Aug. 16, 1969, in Bethlehem, Pa.

Mr. Goshert continued his career with Pennsylvania Power & Light in various locations, including Allentown, Harrisburg, Honesdale and Williamsport. He also taught electrical engineering courses at Penn State University. In 1995, he took early retirement after 25 years with Pennsylvania Power & Light and moved to Bend.

In Bend, he began driving buses for Mount Bachelor. He was selected as project manager for construction of the Deschutes County Public Library in Bend. He then worked as project manager for the Deschutes County Historical Society renovation project.

He also provided legal consulting services for several law firms in Washington state, as well as pro bono engineering work for nonprofit organizations in Arizona and British Columbia.

Mr. Goshert began playing the French horn in fourth grade and continued to play in various bands and orchestras in Pennsylvania. He also began singing in church and community choirs in the mid-1980s.

After moving to Bend, he played for the Central Oregon Symphony and Cascade Winds Symphonic Band (Central Oregon Concert Band), sang in the Cascade Chorale, and was a ringer in the church handbell choir. He also played in the pit band at Kenwood School for various musicals.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, riding motorcycles and playing skee ball. He was also a craftsman who enjoyed working on projects with his sons, such as the construction of docks and decks.

Survivors include his wife, Gail of Bend; two sons, Bryan of Killeen, Texas, and Jason of Eugene; two sisters, Jill Martino of Middletown, Pa., and Cynthia Snyder of York, Pa.; and one brother, John of Elizabethtown, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deschutes County Historical Society, PO Box 5252, Bend 97708.
