Gary Frank Anstett
July 1, 1950 - July 24, 2003

Gary Frank Anstett of Milwaukie died July 24 of natural causes. He was 53.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Anstett was born July 1, 1950, in Robinsdale, Minn., to Robert and Mildred Anstett. He was a millworker for Warm Springs Forest Products and a former resident of Madras.

Survivors include his three sons, Jason and Randall, both of Washougal, Wash., and Jess of Madras; a brother, Joseph of Madras; and three sisters, Mary Rife and Betty Fisher, both of Riverside, Calif., and Donna Kelsey of Auburn, Calif.

Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Viola May Ellis
Jan. 10, 1924 - July 24, 2003

Viola May Ellis of Junction City died July 24. She was 79.

A memorial service was held.

Mrs. Ellis was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Forsyth, Mont., to Lee and Vera (Utterback) Earl. She married Frank Ellis in 1948 in Eugene.

She worked as a beautician. She was a resident of Crooked River Ranch until 1996 when she moved to Junction City.

Mrs. Ellis was a member of the Ranch Chapel in Crooked River Ranch.

She enjoyed golfing, bingo and playing cards.

Survivors include her four sons, Wayne of Eugene, Harold Earl of Veneta, Dennis of Marcola and Gene Earl of Madras; a brother, Bill of La Pine; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Gleo Kerns Shuman
Dec. 18, 1928 - July 26, 2003

Gleo Kearns Shuman of Madras died Saturday of natural causes. She was 74.

A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at East Cascade Assisted Living Center in Madras.

Mrs. Shuman was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1947.

She was employed as an office worker at F.C. Machine Company in Ohio. She lived in Akron, Ohio, for 40 years before moving to Central Oregon five years ago.

Mrs. Shuman was affiliated with the Madras Free Methodist Church. She was active with Boy Scouts of America and previously managed Central Oregon Community Action Agency Network apartments in Madras.

Her hobbies included crafts, knitting, crocheting and painting.

Survivors include her two sons, David of Canton, Mich., and Thomas of Madras; a daughter, Robin Honeycutt of Lynchburg, Va.; a brother, James Taylor of Portland; two sisters, Phyllis Scanlon of Portland and Gertrude Dunbar of Barberton, Ohio; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Falls Cancer Club, P.O. Box 3244, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223.

Evelyn Mae Connor
June 6, 1918 - Nov. 27, 2003

Evelyn Mae Connor of La Pine died Thursday of natural causes. She was 85.

A viewing will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Deschutes Memorial Chapel followed by a funeral at 1 p.m. at Deschutes Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Connor was born June 6, 1918, in Asheville, N.C., to Waverly and Grace (Dingler) Couch. She attended high school in Asheville and married James Connor on Feb. 13, 1937 in Asheville.

Mrs. Connor worked for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring in 1972.

She liked the mountains and snow and especially enjoyed being with her family.

Survivors include her husband of La Pine; a daughter, Nancy of La Pine; a grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son.

Deschutes Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Erskine C. Currie
Sept. 29, 1927 - Nov. 23, 2003

Erskine C. Currie of Bend died Nov. 23 of natural causes. He was 76.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.

Mr. Currie was born Sept. 29, 1927, in Hattiesburg, Miss., to Rev. John and Ruth (Macleod) Currie. He married Martha.

Mr. Currie graduated from Louisiana State University in 1948. He served in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954.

He worked in the newspaper business for 35 years, working 23 years at the the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. He retired in 1985 and moved to Bend.

Survivors include his son, Webster of Kabota, Japan; two daughters, Margaret Worth of Bend and Anne Lazar of Tallahassee, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Autumn Funerals of Bend is in charge of the arrangements.

Shirley 'Shirts' Quant
Feb. 1, 1915 - Nov. 26, 2003

Shirley "Shirts" Quant of Prineville died Wednesday of natural causes. He was 88.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Prineville Funeral Home.

Mr. Quant was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Mitchell to Seymore and Jessie (Taylor) Quant. He worked at the Cinnabar mine in the Ochoco Mountains before graduating from high school in Mitchell in 1936. He earned a basketball and academic scholarship to Oregon State College to study forestry but was unable to attend because of his father's illness. Mr. Quant married Margaret Summer on May 25, 1942, in Prineville.

He joined the Army in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater, Philippines and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Mr. Quant owned a store and gas station in the Ochocos before moving to Prineville in the 1950s, where he owned the "Quaint Rock Shop."

His hobbies included rockhounding and collecting agates on the coast. He enjoyed music and dancing.

Survivors include his son, Bill of Prineville; three daughters, Lucy Woodward, Terry Quant and Marcy Gascon, all of Prineville; nine grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers and two sisters.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Crook County Historical Society or a charity of one's choice.

Anna Frances Voshall
March 16, 1937 - Nov. 20, 2003

Anna Frances Voshall of Yuba City, Calif., died Nov. 20 of natural causes. She was 66.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, at Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.

Mrs. Voshall was born March 16, 1937, in Troy, N.Y. She was a former resident of Bend.

Mrs. Voshall worked as a hospital ward clerk and was also a hospital and library volunteer in Yuba City, Calif. She enjoyed playing cards, watching movies, collecting bears and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Collister of Bend; a sister, Mary Phillips of Yuba City, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Foundation.

Rachel P. Robin
Dec. 11, 1911 - Nov. 22, 2003

Rachel P. Robin of Bend died Saturday, Nov. 22, of natural causes. She was 91.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at Redmond Memorial cemetery.

Mrs. Robin was born Dec. 11, 1911, in Buhl, Idaho, to Albert and Ada (Cowllins) Nelson. She married Isador "Easy" Robin.

She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church in Redmond.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Anabel A. Holdiman
July 30, 1913 - Nov. 22, 2003

Anabel A. Holdiman of La Pine died Saturday, Nov. 22, of kidney failure. She was 90.

A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Chapel in Bend, followed by a funeral service. A cryptside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

Mrs. Holdiman was born July 30, 1913, in Larned, Kan., to Ned and Virgie (Menefee) Atkins. She graduated from Browning High School in Browning, Mo., and attended Chillicothe Business College in Chillicothe, Mo. She married Charles Holdiman on May 2, 1942, in Oklahoma City.

Mrs. Holdiman lived on the East Coast until 1945, when she moved to San Francisco. She served as president of several organizations through her church and also as an association chairwoman for the Girl Scouts of America in South San Francisco. Mrs. Holdiman then served on the San Francisco Bay Area Executive Council for Girl Scouts. She moved in 1973 to La Pine, where she later served on the executive council of the Western Rivers Girl Scouts.

Mrs. Holdiman was a Bethel Guardian for Job's Daughters and both a Worthy Matron and a Grand Representative of Missouri in Oregon for the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile and the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Holdiman enjoyed needlework and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband of La Pine; a daughter, Virginia Charlton of La Pine; and a sister, Charlene Gann of Chillicothe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother and a sister.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Bend-La Pine, 2075 NE Wyatt Court, Bend 97701 or Shriner's Children's Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland 97201.
