Ongstad
Bertha Ongstad, 93, of Woodburn died Jan. 3, 2003.
Born May 31, 1909, in Fosston, Minn., she attended high school in Minnesota. She moved to Gold Beach in 1958, then moved to Woodburn in 1973. She attended art classes at Chemeketa Community College and was a member of the Faith Christian Fellowship Church.
Her interests included painting, woodcarving and sewing.
She married Gunnar Ongstad Aug. 30, 1940, in Westport; he died in 1971.
Survivors include her stepchildren, Paul Ongstad of Colorado Springs, Colo., Gladys Ice of Colorado Springs, Murial Pike of Costa Mesa, Calif.; daughter, Carole Mateer of Los Gatos, Calif.; brother, Homer Lee of Portland; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were held Jan. 5 in Faith Christian Fellowship, Woodburn. Interment will be in Belle Passi cemetery, Woodburn.
Arrangements were by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.

Hollway
Albert A. Hollway, 86, of Woodburn died Dec. 29, 2002, in Peoria Ariz.
Born Jan. 9, 1916, in Philadelphia, Pa., he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a sheet metal worker installing gutters in residential housing, retiring in 1991, and moved to Woodburn.
His interests included fishing and spending the winters in Arizona.
He married Roda Magel Aug. 21, 1943, in Salem.
Survivors include his wife; daughters, Barbara Hollway of Phoenix; son, Richard Hollway of Portland and two grandchildren.
Services will begin at 10:30 p.m. Jan. 3 in Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn. Interment will be in Willamette National cemetery, Portland.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Hershberger
Verl E. Hershberger, 79, of Woodburn died Dec. 27, 2002.
Born Feb. 1, 1923 in Hubbard, he grew up there and eventually graduated from Hubbard High School.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as an electrician and electrical contractor for construction projects.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Woodburn Masonic Lodge, Shriners, a past commander of the American Legion Hubbard Post, and a member of the Elks Lodge.
He married Lois Caviola on Nov.14, 1958 in Vancouver, Wash.
He enjoyed clam digging, fishing, hunting and traveling in his RV.
He is survived by his wife, Lois; son, Daryl Hershberger of Aurora, Ohio; step-daughter, Jo Anne Thompson of Eugene; step-son, Fidel Gaviola of Mesa, Ariz.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday at Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn. Private interment will be at Belle Passi Memorial Mausoleum, Woodburn.
Memorials may be sent to the Shriner's Hospital for crippled children, Portland.

Baker
Darwin Frank Baker, 60, of Woodburn died Dec. 20, 2002.
Born May 2, 1942, in Rexburg, Idaho, he was a caregiver. He also worked for the postal service. He lived in John Day before moving to Woodburn in 1997.
His interests included gardening, woodworking and housecleaning. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Survivors include his mother, Venice Baker; son, Robert Baker of Verdi, Nev.; brother, Roger Baker of Chandler, Calif.; sister, Charlene Baker of Canby, Sharon Arzoian of Hubbard and JoAnn Spearman of Reno, Nev.
At his request, no services will be held.
Arrangements were by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Stewart
WOODBURN -- Irene V. Stewart, 91, of Woodburn died Dec. 23, 2002.
Born July 9, 1911, in Rosebud, Neb., she lived in South Dakota and Vancouver, Wash., before moving to Woodburn. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Rebekah Circle and Family Community Education.
Her interests included quilting.
She married Mark J. Stewart May 12, 1961, in Vancouver, Wash.; They made their home in Woodburn. He died in 1986.
Survivors include her children, Douglas and Robert Hanson and Jean Squires, all of Vancouver, Wash., Veronna Sjothun of Woodburn, Patty Thoen of Kelso, Wash., Beverly Klein of Portland, Lila Rommerick of Albany, Judy Burr of Sherwood, Janice Stewart of Modesto, Calif., Claudia Hummel of Grass Valley, Calif., and Vickie Godoy of Lake Oswego; brother, Robert Roberts of Vancouver; sisters, Helen Tabbot and Dorothy Lodge of Vancouver, Hazel Gunderson of Boise, Idaho, Charlotte Whittaker of Silver Lake, Wash., Lois Wilkerson of Vancouver, and Virginia Miller of Silver Lake, Wash.; numerous grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 28 in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Woodburn. Interment will be in Belle Passi Cementery, Woodburn.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.

Denbo
Robert Henry Denbo, 78, of Greenville, Ariz., formerly of Woodburn, died Dec. 20, 2002.
Born Nov. 7, 1924, in Macksville, Kan., he was a radar technician for the U.S. Air Force, retiring from active duty in 1975. He lived in Portland for five years before moving to Woodburn in 1991, where he drove a school bus. He moved go Greenville in 1998.
His interests included bowling and golf.
He married Gloria Rusby Dec. 15, 1945, in Los Angeles; she died in 1996.
Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn Davis of Banning, Calif.; sons, Robert Denbo of Bull Head City, Ariz., and Kenneth Denbo; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held.
Arrangements were by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Kernal
WOODBURN -- Warren B. Kernal, 70, of Woodburn died Dec. 16, 2002.
Born April 26, 1932, in Redwood Falls, Minn., he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a park ranger, and he worked for the Oregon State Highway Department. He moved to Woodburn in 1969. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Jamestown AF and AM No 6., and a member of the Woodburn Eagles and Elks Lodge.
He married Verna Stickel March 24, 1962, in Jamestown, N.D.; Survivors include his wife; sons, Bruce of Stanfield, Allan of Keizer and Matthew of Beaverton; daughter, Kristina Dooley of Garden Home, Calif.; sister, Sara Schmidt; and eight grandchildren.
Services were held at the Woodburn Eagles Lodge.
Interment was in in Belle Passi Memorial Mausoleum in Woodburn.
Arrangements were by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.

Braun
George M. Braun, 95, of Woodburn died March 9, 2003.
Born April 24, 1907, in Krassna, N.D., he was a retired farmer. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He lived in Portland before moving to Woodburn in 1972.
He married Ruth Lich June 22, 1947, in Portland; she died in 1998.
Survivors include his brother, Otto Braun of Idaho.
Entombment will be at 10 a.m. March 17 in Belle Passi Memorial Mausoleum, Woodburn.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.

Fitzgerald
Frank Fitzgerald, 87, of Woodburn died March 3, 2003.
Born Aug. 10, 1915, in Portsmouth, England, he was a pharmaceutical sales representative. He served in the British Armed Forces during World War II. He lived in England, Nebraska, Colorado and Arizona before moving to Woodburn in 1992.
His interests included golf and woodworking.
He married Audrey Mills; she died in 2001.
Survivors include his companion, Laura Sherman of Woodburn; sister, Norma Hansen of Nebraska; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held.
Arrangements are by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Mitchell
Dolly M. Mitchell, 75, Woodburn died March 4, 2003.
Born June 15, 1927, in Chamberlain, S.D., she attended business college in Portland. She volunteered with Camp Fire Girls and had worked at the Birdseye Cannery. She lived in Kennebec, S.D., before moving to Woodburn.
Her interests included gardening and spending time with her family.
She married Ira Mitchell Aug. 6, 1946 in Woodburn.
Survivors include her daughter, Marlyn Kime of Salem; brother, Robert Armstrong of Aumsville; sisters, Betty Magers of Pilot Rock and Leona Becker of Woodburn; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 7 in Belle Passi Mausoleum, Woodburn.
Arrangements were by Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
