Borden
H.E. "Herb" Borden, 70, of Gervais, died April 19, 2006.
Born Nov. 22, 1935 in Junction City, he graduated from high school in Corvallis and served in the Dallas National Guard for 10 years. He lived in Tangent, Corvallis and Brooks before moving to Gervais 40 years ago.
He had worked as a row crop farmer in Marion County, then as a long haul truck driver for 20 years before going back to farming for local farmers. He retired five years ago.
He was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance Church in Dallas and enjoyed driving and cutting wood.
He married Dorothea Atkins on Jan. 15, 1973.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothea; sister, Edythe Oberg of Dallas; brothers, Jerry Borden of Gervais and Miguel Salinas of West Linn; step-children, Mary Ann Green of California, Jim Roberts of Canada, Jean Lettemaier of Donald, Walt Roberts of Woodburn, Robin Peterson of Marion County; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. April 22 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel.
Crypt entombment will be private at Restlawn Memorial Mausoleum in Salem.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Benck
Elizabeth R. Benck, 94, of Woodburn, died April 19, 2006.
Born Sept. 1, 1911 in West Trenton, N.J., she was a homemaker and lived in Woodburn for eight months.
She was a volunteer for Damasch Hospital and was a member of Eastern Star, Garden Club, and Pink and Lavender Club.
She was married to Robert Benck Sr.
She is survived by her sons, Robert Benck Jr., William "Dow" Benck; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Rowland in 1999.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. April 26 at Hubbard United Church of Christ.
Contributions may be made to Legacy Hospice or Hubbard United Church of Christ.

Allison
Earl Dale Allison, 82, of Woodburn, died July 4, 2006.
Born June 5, 1924 in Clarksburg, W.Va., he moved with his family to the Los Angeles area, then to San Diego and then to Apache Junction, Ariz.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during World War II and then joined the U.S. Navy where he served for 18 years. He was a veteran of three wars.
In 1993 he married Barbara Lucke. They lived in Arizona for winters and spent the summers in Oregon, settling in Woodburn.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Barbara; daughter, Cathy Galbraith of Ohio; sons, Kevin and Stephen of San Diego, Christopher of New Mexico; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
At his request no services will be held.
Arrangements are by Keizer Funeral Chapel.
Contributions may be made to the Willamette Valley Hospice in Salem.

VanWinkle
Ronald D. VanWinkle, 63, of Gervais, died July 2, 2006.
Born Feb. 12, 1943 in Oklahoma City, he moved to Valsetz in 1948, then to Dallas. He graduated from Dallas High School and had worked for 16 years at UPS and 16 years at Fred Meyer in Portland. He moved to Gervais eight years ago.
He enjoyed sailing, swimming, fishing, target practice, his quad, star gazing, photography, snow skiing and eating cookie dough.
He married Kathy Hudnall in Dallas in 1963 and they made their home in Salem before moving to Portland.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Gervais; brother, Rick of Dallas; sisters, Pat Waldron of Amity, and Brenda Graham of Dallas.
A funeral service was held July 7 at Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.
A graveside service was held at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Salem.
Arrangements are by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Funk
Nina M. Funk, 82, of Hubbard, died July 4, 2006.
Born Oct. 29, 1923 in Dixon, Wyo., she lived in a log cabin on the Wyoming prairie. At age 9 she moved to Utah and at age 11 she moved to Arlington, Calif. She graduated high school in Riverside, Calif., and lived in Costa Mesa and Garden Grove, Calif., before moving to Molalla in 1963 and to Hubbard in 1974.
She had worked as a seamstress, as a checker for Safeway, in customer service for Photo Mat, as a health care provider and in home daycare from 1970 to 1974.
She married Gail L. Funk in 1956 in Parker, Ariz. He preceded her in death in 1968.
She is survived by children, James Funk of Seal Beach, Calif., Sue Coe of Aurora and Linda Wollertsen of Oregon; step-daughter, Barbara Johnson of Phelan, Calif.; 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. July 10 at Hoodview Church of God in Woodburn.
Interment will be private at Molalla Memorial cemetery.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Chapel.

Whitsett
Leighton E. Whitsett, 89, of Aurora, died July 5, 2006.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. July 10 at Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.
Interment with military honors will follow at Champoeg cemetery.
Arrangements are by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Haskins
Walter A. Haskins, 88, of Salem, died June 30, 2002.
Born June 28, 1914, in Page, N.D., he graduated from Morris High School in 1935, in Morris, Minn.
He later graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., and Moorhead Teachers College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1939 with a teaching certificate. He played professional baseball for the Kansas City Athletics from 1940 to 1941. He served in the National Guard from 1931 to 1941, then serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the Army reserves in 1974. He worked as an area supervisor for the unemployment compensation department for the Oregon Employment Division for 28 years, before retiring in 1974. He lived in California and Minnesota before moving to Salem in 1946.
He married Hazel Freeberg Nov. 10, 1942, in Camp Haan, Calif.; she died in January 2002.
Survivors include his sons, Walter Haskins III of Keizer, Donald Haskins of Eugene, Richard Haskins of Salem and Robert Haskins of Keizer; daughters, Dorothy Haskins of Woodburn, Sally Haskins of Salem; sisters, Jean Pearson of Long Beach, Calif., Kay Haines of Seal Beach, Calif., and Helen Griffen of Arizona; brother, Hal Haskins of Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Rose, preceded him in death.
Services will begin at 11 a.m. July 3 in Cornwell Colonial Chapel, Woodburn. Interment will be in Belle Passi cemetery, Woodburn.
Arrangements are by Cornwell Colonial Colonial Chapel.
Contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Rostvold
Theodore Rostvold, 93, formerly of Woodburn, died June 26, 2002.
Born Aug. 14, 1908 in Monitor, he worked on the family farm, raising livestock and sheep.
He married Ellen Clemens on July 10, 1936 in Tillamook. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He was a member of the Woodburn Elks, the Sons of Norway, the Flax Growers Association, and the Woodburn Mutual of Enumclaw Insurance board of directors.
He was also a professional singer who performed at weddings and funerals after studying music in Portland.
He is survived by his daughter, Julianna Gravley of Wilsonville; son, Mark Rostvold of Balsam Lake, Wash.; sister, Norma Olsen of Woodburn; two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held July 1 at Miller cemetery, Silverton. Remembrances may be sent to the St. Mary's Catholic Church building maintenance fund, Mount Angel.
Arrangements by Simon-Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Cook
Norma Cook, 99, of Woodburn, died June 26, 2002.
Born March 30, 1903 in Seattle, she married Paul Cook on April 1, 1929 in Seattle. They made their first home in Bainbridge Island, Wash., where she worked selling tickets at the Washington State Bainbridge Island Ferry for over 15 years. She retired in 1965 and the couple moved to Woodburn. He preceded her in death in 1971.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She volunteered many years for the Woodburn Library and volunteered for 20 years with the Woodburn Senior Center.
She enjoyed painting and taught art classes at the MacLaren School for Boys. She also enjoyed reading.
She is survived by three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be private. Private interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum, Salem.
Remembrances may be made to the Salvation Army.
