George
Vernon Thomas George, 80, of Woodburn, died May 29, 2010. He was born Oct. 11, 1929 in Deering, N.D. to Denton and Olga George.
He attended Deering schools until his father’s death in 1942. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1947 after his family moved out West and served until 1951. He served in the U.S. and Japan as an aircraft welder and mechanic for the Strategic Bomber Command, working on B-52 bombers.
He returned to Portland in 1952 and later married Doris Sonneland in 1953. The family moved to the Monitor area in 1973 where they farmed and worked at the family welding business. He was an active leader in youth programs like 4-H and Future Farmers of America.
He returned to Deering after his retirement but returned to Oregon to help take care of his older brother, Vallie George, who lived in Woodburn.
He is survived by his daughter, Ardis, of Tigard; son, Mark, of Grand Ronde; sister, Violet Harstad, of Minot, N.D. and four grandchildren.
A public viewing will be held June 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn. A graveside service will be held June 11 at 1 p.m. at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Helsel
Marvin Eugene Helsel, 74, of Woodburn, died April 27, 2010. He was born June 29, 1935 in Salem.
He attended Woodburn schools. He joined the U.S. Navy at 17, along with his brother, Wayne. He served in the Korean War.
In 1978 he went to work for Pacific Power and Light as a lineman, where he worked until his retirement in 1998.
He was active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was a past president of the Lincoln City and Woodburn aeries. He also served as Worth State President of the Eagles in 1991-92. He served as president of the Pacific Northwest Grand Aerie in 1996-97.
He is survived by his daughter, Tammi Morgan; sisters Mary McKay, of St. Paul, Carleene Compton, of Reedsport and Caroline Hastings, of California; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marion Helsel; wife Daisy Belle; brother Wayne and nephew Bruce McKay.
A memorial service was held May 15 at the Woodburn Eagles Lodge. He was buried with full military honors at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Escobedo-Velazquez
Antonio Escobedo-Velazquez, 63, of Woodburn, died June 3, 2010. He was born May 4, 1947 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He worked as an equipment operator.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Escobedo, of Woodburn; daughter, Susana Escobedo, of Salem; son, Cesar Escobedo, of Gervais; parents, Alberto Sr. and Carmen, of Mexico; sisters Martha Lydy, of Molalla, Carmen, Susana, Leticia of Mexico and Margarita Escobedo, of Woodburn; brothers Alberto Escobedo Jr. and Jorge, of Mexico, Rogelio, of California; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Raymundo and Alejandro.
A funeral service was held June 7 at Woodburn Spanish Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Hockett
Julia Ann (Judy) Hockett, 71, of St. Paul, died June 10, 2010. She was born Nov. 13, 1938 in Silverton. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Hockett, of St. Paul; sons, Robert Jr., of Molalla, Patrick, of Woodburn, Timothy, of Gervais, John, of Newberg, Bryan of St. Paul; daughters, Laurie Ruiz, of Gervais, Karen Armstrong, of Woodburn, Jody Connor, of Keizer, Judy Salinas, of Keizer; brothers Billy Scott, of Silverton, Bob Scott, of Mt. Angel, Jim Scott, of Idaho, Pat Foltz, of Terrebonne, David, of Bend and Larry Foltz, of Virginia; sisters, Mary Halter, of Redmond, Joanne Butsch, of Monitor and Sharon Hoffer, of Mt. Angel; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A visitation will be held June 13 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Woodburn. A funeral Mass will be held June 14 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church and a graveside service will follow at St. Paul Catholic cemetery.

Schlegel
Leo Lee Schlegel, 86, of Salem, died June 8, 2010.
He was born March 29, 1924, in Albany and served as a pilot with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a minister for Mennonite and Baptist churches. He served as minister at the Calvary Mennonite Church in Aurora and at one time as an unofficial chaplain for the Portland Trail Blazers.
He enjoyed gardening, playing golf, following the activities and accomplishments of his grandchildren and watching sports, especially the Oregon State University Beavers.
Survivors include his wife, M. Ernestine; son, David of Modesto, Calif.; daughters, Jane Seaders of Crooked River Ranch and Leslie Starr of Silverton; brother, George of Albany; sisters, Doris Harvey of Tustin, Calif., and Olivine Galvin of Irving, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held June 12, at noon at Calvary Mennonite Church. Visitation was held prior to the service. A graveside service with military honors was held at Zion Mennonite cemetery in Hubbard.

Crauthers
Donald Lewis Crauthers, 79, of Donald, died June 9, 2010. He was a longtime resident of the Donald/Broadacres area. He was born Jan. 23, 1931 in Collinsville, Okla. to George and Lora Crauthers. He graduated from high school in Shamrock, Okla. in 1951 and married Nora Butcher in 1954 in Stroud, Okla.
He spent his early years working in the oil fields in Oklahoma and Bakersfield, Calif. and moved to Oregon in 1968. He worked as a groundskeeper for the North Marion School District before retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nora; daughters, Regina Sorenson of Molalla and Emy Park of Aurora; son, Alan Crauthers of Hubbard; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held June 19 at his home on Wiseacre Lane.

Loyd
Cleve Ellison Guy Loyd, 61, of Woodburn, died June 13, 2010. He was born July 5, 1948.
A memorial gathering and potluck was held at his home June 19.

Estoja
Shane Thomas Estorja, 15, of Woodburn, died June 2, 2010. He was born Aug. 24, 1994.
He is survived by his father, Mike Estorija; mother, Christin Carlson; sisters, Brandy Estorja, Amber Estorja and Renee Carlson; brother Michael Estorja; his grandparents and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Gladkaya
Olga F. Gladkaya, 89, of Hubbard, died June 17, 2010. She was born Aug. 15, 1920 in Polyana, Ukraine.
She was a farm laborer and a member of the Russian Gospel Church in Hubbard.
She is survived by her sons, Anatoliy, Ivan, Pavel, Vasiliy and Michael Gladkiy; daughters, Nadia Postovan, Nina Gridinar and Tatyana Shevchenko; five brothers; four sisters; 36 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ilya and parents, Feodosiy and Anna Barlyak.
A funeral service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 20 and at 11 a.m. on June 21 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel of Woodburn.

Shaw
Marion C. Shaw, 80, of Portland, died June 16, 2010. He was born June 22, 1929 in Woodburn, to Ted and Gladys Shaw.
He attended Woodburn schools and graduated from Woodburn High School in 1947. He retired in 1992 after 44 years as a truck driver. After retirement, he enjoyed traveling to Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands. In recent years, he began attending car race events and traveling to speeders, which are rail car races. He also enjoyed attending events at Warner Pacific College.
He is survived by his brothers, Duane, Myrle and Larry Shaw.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 1993.
A memorial service will be held June 24 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Scott Church of God, located at 10603 Henderson St. in Portland.

Aguilar
Ernesto Cordova Aguilar, 13, of Gervais, died June 16, 2010. He was born March 12, 1997 in Silverton.
He was a seventh-grade student at Gervais Middle School.
He is survived by his parents, Alejandro and Lucia Aguilar, of Gervais; sisters, Elizabeth Iglesias, of Gervais, Angelina Iglesias, of Keizer and Alicia Aguilar, of Gervais; and brother, Gabrial Aguilar, of Gervais.
A memorial Mass will be held June 23 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gervais.

Hacault
Thomas David “Tom” Hacault, 65, of Woodburn, died June 23, 2010. He was born March 1, 1945 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
He worked for the state of Oregon in the Department of Corrections.
He enjoyed playing golf, hunting, fishing, watching TV and cooking. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by is wife, Joyce Hacault, of Woodburn; parents, Felix and Rosina Hacault, of Vancouver, Wash.; daughters, Lisa M. Phillips, of Beaver Meadows, Pa., Teresa M. Jacobson, of Battle Ground, Wash., Shari L. Hacault, of Battle Ground, Wash. and Shari L. Albertson, of Concord, N.C.; sons, Mike T. Hacault, of Battle Ground, Wash., Mark G. Hacault, of Vancouver, Wash., Eric F. Hacault, of Vancouver, Wash. and Travis V. Lopez, of Vancouver, Wash.; and sister, Jeanette Finney, of Olympia, Wash.
A graveside service with military honors will be held July 9 at 2 p.m. at Willamette National cemetery.

Cecil
Kenneth Wayne Cecil, 80, of Woodburn, died June 23, 2010. He was born May 24, 1930 in Portland.
He was a pharmacist and former owner of Fairway Drug in Woodburn. He was a member of United Methodist Church in Woodburn and of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Orey, of Otis; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held June 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn. A memorial service will be held June 30 at 1:30 p.m. A private entombment will be at Bell Passi Memorial Mausoleum in Woodburn.
