Trudee Clements
Warm Springs resident Trudee Anne Queahpama Clements died Oct. 10, 2004, at Mountain View Hospital. She was 42.
She was born Feb. 27, 1962, in LaGrande to parents Warren "Rudy" and Annabelle (Queahpama) Clements. She graduated from Madras High School in 1980 and was on the gymnastics team during her high school years. She then attended Western Business College in Portland for two years.
In 1983, she married Jacob Frank Jr., who preceded her in death in 1992. She was employed for many years in clerical and secretarial positions with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, including working for the Tribal Council, Spilyay Tymoo Newspaper, and The Museum at Warm Springs.
She was an avid bowler and member of the Madras Tuesday Night Twisters, was known for her horsemanship and barrel racing, was the fast pitcher on the girls softball team, performed the Lord's Prayer in sign language for special events, was known as a great speaker, was a World's Champion Fancy Shawl Dancer and won many fancy shawl dancer championships throughout the U.S. and Canada. She was a singer and drummer of traditional music for the Quartz Creek Singers and Dancers from Simnasho, and performed at shows all over the Northwest.
Of Ms. Clements' many accomplishments, she considered her selection a Miss Warm Springs in 1981 and having the privilege to represent her people as her greatest achievement. Her titles included: being named 1979 Queen of the Annual Warm Springs Holiday Basketball Tournament, 1979 Queen of the Tygh Valley All-Indian Rodeo, and 1979 Queen/Princess of the Pendleton Round-Up American Indian Beauty Pageant. In 1980 she was the first-ever winner of the Miss Indian Northwest Youth, was first runner up in the 27th Miss Indian America Pageant in 1981 (the top title for Indian women in America), and also in 1981 was named Miss National Congress of American Indians, Miss National American Indian Cattlemens Association, and Miss Warm Springs. She was a member of the Lincoln's Powwow Committee and the Miss Warm Springs Committee.
Survivors include her parents, Rudy and Anna Clements of Warm Springs; her daughter, Shayla Frank; and grandson, Jake Frank, all of Warm Springs.
A dressing ceremony, officiated by Rosalind Johnson, was held Oct. 11, at the Simnasho Longhouse with overnight services. Funeral services, officiated by Wilson Wewa Jr., were Oct. 12, with burial at the Agency cemetery. Casket bearers were Yahtin Frank, Kyle Queahpama, Austin Greene, William Wilson, Mackie Begay, and Frankie Kagen Veana. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Mattie Wells
Former area resident Mattie L. Wells, died Oct. 12, 2004, in Redmond at the age of 80.
Mrs. Wells was born Sept. 12, 1924, in Astoria to parents Benjamin and Zada Kelim. During World War II, while attending college, she worked in the Portland Shipyards. She was also a regional trainer for the Red Cross. In 1948, she graduated from Pacific University in Forest Grove with a bachelor of science degree in education. She began her teaching career in Sweet Home.
In 1950, she married Leonard B. Wells and moved to Central Oregon, where they began farming and raising their three daughters. She continued teaching for 30 years in the Madras, Corbett and Culver school districts.
In Culver and Corbett high schools she was instrumental in starting competitive girls athletics. Under her coaching, girls competed in volleyball, basketball, track and field. She trained girls in tumbling for local performances, and also taught adult physical education classes for the Culver community.
Her special interests included biking, walking, swimming and fishing. She had a passion for working crossword puzzles and loved reading. He greatest joy was spending time with her four grandchildren and traveling around the U.S. For the past 15 years, she divided her time between Central Oregon and Yuma, Ariz. She most recently returned to Redmond, where she spent the past year.
Survivors include her daughters, Kerryl Kollen of Powell Butte, Kristi Webster of Tumwater, Wash., and Nadine Wells of Bend; four grandchildren, Cody Kollen, Nikki Jo Kollen, Kelsey Webster and Shelby Webster; and one sister, Nadine Keene. She was preceded in death by her husband.
A graveside service was held Oct. 16, at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Culver High School Girls Athletics, or Central Oregon Opportunity Center in Redmond. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Michael Cunningham
Former area resident Michael E. Cunningham died Nov. 19, 2004, at his home in Hines. He was 48.
Mr. Cunningham was born July 14, 1956, in Pendleton to parents Robert and Dorothy (Lamb) Cunningham. The early years of his life were spent in Pendleton, Salem and Hermiston. In 1963, the family moved to Ontario, where he attended school, graduating from Ontario High School in 1975, then from Treasure Valley Community College in 1978, with a degree in forestry. He had recently completed an advanced technical fire management training program, which, in conjunction with his previous credits, gave him the equivalent of a bachelor's degree.
During college, and after graduating, he worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Vale as a firefighter. After college, he also worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs on the Warm Springs Reservation in various timber and fire management positions. In addition, he was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Warm Springs for several years.
Mr. Cunningham was a recognized behavior specialist, serving on regional incident command overhead teams and training firefighters in skills for fighting fire and in fire behavior. His travels in this capacity ranged from Florida to Alaska.
In November 2003, he moved to Hines to be the fire management officer on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, where he remained until his death.
He had a great love for the outdoors, especially deer and elk hunting and fishing with his close buddies. He was fascinated by fire behavior and his work in fire management.
Survivors include his parents, Robert Cunningham of Ontario and Dorothy Birindelli of Arcata, Calif.; his brothers and their wives, Patrick and Cathy Cunningham of Corvallis; Shan and Jacki Cunningham of Myrtle Point; his sister, Karen Cunningham of Madras; nephews, Jeffrey Cunningham and Brandon Cunningham; niece, Erin Cunningham; stepmother, Esperanza Cunningham, stepfather, Mario Birindelli; stepbrothers, Marvin Romey, Curtis Romey, Brent Romey and Rusty Birindelli; stepsisters, Katharyn Waldemer and Colleen Moore; two special friends, Theresa Morris of Madras and Eddie Lemos of Ontario.
A memorial mass was held Dec. 6, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Ontario, with Father W. Raymond Jarboe presiding. Arrangements were under the direction of Lienkaemper Chapel in Ontario. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

Mary Frier
Terrebonne resident Mary Alice "Peggy" Frier died Dec. 1, 2004, at the age of 82.
Mrs. Frier was born April 21, 1922, in Melstone, Mont., to parents Eugene and Inice Elizabeth (Hourigan) Pegg. She graduated from Custer High School in Custer, Mont.
On Feb. 15, 1958, she married Frank Frier in Bend. She was employed as a meat wrapper for Erickson's Market in Bend, and also worked for Wagner's Market and Three Boys Market in Bend for many years.
Her special interests included crocheting, gardening, and taking long Sunday drives with her husband.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Frier of Terrebonne; sons, Dennis Frier of Madras, and Michael Frier of Redmond; daughters, Marva Jean Kalinoski of Gresham, Judy Teply of Champion, Neb., and Sandra June Frier of Eugene; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and two sisters.
A memorial service was held Dec. 4, at Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home's Redmond chapel.

Grace Montgomery
Grace Etta (Trimble) Montgomery, a tenant of High Lookee Lodge, died Dec. 3, 2004, at the age of 91.
Mrs. Montgomery was born July 25, 1913, in Interior, S.D., to parents Guy and Lucy (Randall) Trimble. On Jan. 17, 1955, she married Richard Montgomery in Centralia, Wash.
She owned and operated Marie's Saloon in Vancouver, Wash. for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Vancouver, and her special interests included sewing, making dolls and clothing for them, sewing ribbon shirts and doing handcrafts.
Two years ago, she moved to Warm Springs from Vancouver, Wash., to be near her sons.
Survivors include her sons, Trimble Cannon of Terrebonne, Gordon Cannon of Madras and Bruce Cannon of Eugene; daughters, Betty Music of Drum Right, Okla., and Mary Lee Kelly of Honolulu, Hawaii; brother, Charles Trimble of Omaha, Neb.; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a child, her husband, five brothers and five sisters.
A funeral service was held Dec. 7, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras. A private family ceremony was held at Willamette National cemetery in Portland. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Margaret Morrow
Madras resident Margaret Jane Morrow died Nov. 29, 2004, at the age of 86.
Mrs. Morrow was born March 19, 1918, in Holdenville, Okla., to parents Dean D. and Margaret F. "Margie" Mathis. She graduated from high school in Holdenville and from Oklahoma A&M; College (now Oklahoma State University). She received an Oklahoma teaching certificate in 1940, and taught in Oklahoma, including at Wetumka Junior College and the Wetumka School District.
In 1944, she moved to Oregon and taught high school English and home economics at Halfway, Ore. In 1945, she moved to Madras and began teaching at Madras High School.
On Sept. 1, 1948, she married Andrew J. Morrow in Redmond. The Morrows lived in Madras, but later moved to Grizzly, where they lived on the Morrow family ranch. In 1964, they returned to Madras and have lived at their current address for over 38 years.
One of her teaching innovations at Madras was a boy's home economics class. The Bend Bulletin reported on a 1947 field trip by her boys' class, and described the class as teaching cooking, sewing, family relations and money management. The trip was cut short, because the boys needed to return to Madras for football practice, since most of them were on the team.
After a break from education, while she raised her two sons, Mrs. Morrow returned to the Jefferson County schools as a librarian, and worked there until retirement.
A lifelong reader and teacher, she attended the Oregon Shakespearean Festival in Ashland for many years. She was active in Study Club, a local book discussion group, and also served as the regional vice president of the Oregon Cowbelles, which at the time was an affiliate of the Oregon Cattlemen's Association.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Andrew J. Morrow; sons, Andrew J. Morrow Jr. of Portland, and Dean M. Morrow of Salem; grandchildren, Andrew III of Plymouth, N.H., Jackquelyn of Portland, Sean of Corvallis, and Chad, Nicholas and Kyle, all of Salem; and a brother, William Mathis of Cadmenton, Mo. She was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Smith.
A recitation of the Rosary was held Dec. 3, at Bel-Air Chapel, and Mass of Christian Burial on Dec. 4, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in Madras.

Susanna Parish
Madras resident Susanna Margaret Parish died Nov. 30, in an accident at the Bright Wood mill. She was 29.
Ms. Parish was born July 16, 1975, in Goldendale, Wash., to parents Ross and Nancy (Pierce) Parish. She moved to Madras in 2001 from Jerome, Idaho, and was employed at Bright Wood Corporation.
She was a member of the Madras Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness and her special interests included reading, watching old movies, decorating her home and shopping. She was known as a giving person.
Survivors include her parents, Ross and Nancy Parish of Madras; brother and his wife, Matthew and Mauna Parish of Madras; sisters and their husbands, Sally and Robby Patrick of LaPine, and Angela and Gregory Peck of Springfield; grandmother, Elsie Pedrin of Wakefield, Mich.; nieces, Victoria Peck of Springfield, and Abigayle Patrick of LaPine; nephews, Nathaniel and Nicholas Patrick, both of LaPine; and Ethan Peck of Springfield.
A memorial service was held Dec. 4, at the Madras Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Omar Winishut Jr.
Warm Springs resident Omar Winishut Jr. died Dec. 5, 2004, at the home of a friend. He was 44.
Mr. Winishut was born Oct. 28, 1960, in Madras to parents Omar Winishut Sr. and Naomi Kalama. He was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He was employed by Warm Springs Forest Products.
Survivors include his brother, Frank Switzler of Warm Springs; and sisters, Teresa Van Pelt and Rachel Winishut, both of Warm Springs.
A dressing ceremony was held Dec. 7, at the Agency Longhouse. Burial was Dec. 8, at the Agency cemetery in Warm Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Robert Harmon
Robert "Bob" M. Harmon of Topeka, Kan., died Jan. 1, of cancer. He was 75 years old. His service will be held at a later date.
Mr. Harmon was born Oct. 8, 1929 to Chester A. Harmon and Esther T. (Greene) Harmon at Coquille, Ore. He attended school in Culver, and graduated from Redmond Union High School in 1947, and later graduated from Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., in 1960.
He met and married Doris Brunkow in 1952 in Topeka, Kan., while he was stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. Doris died in 1975. In 1985 he married Margaret Balyard. Bob worked in insurance most of his life and after retirement in several business ventures. Bob lived in Topeka, Kan., the major portion of his adult life.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Harmon; three daughters, Pam Gardner, and Paula Harmon of Colorado and Janet Ramirez of Topeka; his 102-year-old mother, Esther Harmon and his sister Theo Schonneker, both of Culver; two brothers, Chester Harmon and Chuck Harmon of Tumalo; numerous grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Anne and Jane and their children.
Memorials may be made to the hospice of one's choice.

David Mammen
Madras resident David B. Mammem died Dec. 24, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 83.
Mr. Mammen was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Rockford, Ill., to parents Anton and Mabel (Bristol) Mammen. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was honorably discharged in September 1945. On June 21, 1947, he married Alpha Mammen in Carson City, Nev.
He was employed as the office manager for Tracy Auto Parts in Tracy, Calif., until his retirement. He moved from Tracy to Madras five years ago to be near his nephew.
While in California, he was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 1537, American Legion Post. No. 0172, and the Mt. Oso Masonic Lodge in Tracy, Calif. His special interests included traveling, especially to Reno, Nev.
Survivors include his wife, Alpha Mammen of Madras; nephew, Robert "Bob" Mammen of Madras; niece, Christine Holck of Bandon, Ore.; and brother, Harry Mammen of Bandon. He was preceded in death by two sisters.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 7, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras. A private family burial will be held at the Tracy cemetery in Tracy, Calif. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
