Mary Puckett
Mary Katherine Puckett, a longtime resident of Prineville, died Christmas Day, 2004. She was 91 years old.
Mary was born in Klamath Falls, June 24, 1913, to Bert and Emma Stiles. She married Etsell Woodrow (Bud) Puckett on June 9, 1934. Bud preceded her in death in 1960.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Neil and Mickey Puckett, David and Bonnie Puckett, Dan and Penny Puckett, Sam and Cleta Puckett, Nathan and Peggy Puckett, John and Louise Puckett, Steve and Dee Puckett, Ed Puckett, and Woody and Carolyn Puckett.
Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law: Carolyn and John Chandler, Sarah and Bob Miller, Mary and Leroy Hanes, Esther and Ben Niemela, and Diane and Don Marvin. Mary is also survived by one sister, Addy Chamberlin, and brothers, Bob Stiles, Bill Stiles and Don Stiles. She also leaves 40 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mary worked for a number of years for Pacific Fruit. She also was a cook at the Nazarene Daycare Center until her retirement at 78 years of age. She enjoyed gardening, reading, crochet, and cooking. Mary was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. Her love for her large family was only exceeded by her love for her Lord. She served as church financial secretary until her passing. She played the piano and organ at church for over 60 years. According to family and friends, she will always be remembered for playing "The Star of the East" at Christmastime. There was no one who knew Mary who didn't know they were loved.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, four brothers, two grandsons, one infant son and infant twin daughters.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 31, at 12 p.m., at the Church of the Nazarene followed by a graveside service at Juniper Haven cemetery at 2 p.m. There will be a dinner served at the Church of the Nazarene following the graveside service and all are welcomed. Visitation will be held at Prineville Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m., on Thursday, Dec. 30.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Church of the Nazarene in Prineville. Prineville Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

William Smith
Culver resident William Cletus Smith died Dec. 18, 2004, at the age of 85.
Mr. Smith was born Aug. 28, 1919, in Ketchum, Okla., to parents Arthur and Callie (Baker) Smith.
Mr. Smith moved to California in the early 1940s. On June 6, 1946, he married Luliah Pool in California and worked as a fireman in Port Chicago, Calif., for 14 years. They moved to Culver in 1959, where he worked in home construction, ran a dairy, and later was a building inspector.
He founded the Opal City Dance Hall and the Smith Family Band, and his special interests included team roping, hunting, pitching horseshoes, and raising and training horses.
Survivors include his sons, Garry Smith of Madras and Sheldon Smith of Culver; daughter, Sharon Gibson of Culver; brothers, Jack Smith of Wasilla, Alaska, and Harvey Smith of Antioch, Calif.; sisters, Zetta Pool of Redmond, Maxine Saska of Veneta, Okla., and Betty Embry of Palmer, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, daughter Brenda, and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Dec. 27, at the Redmond Chapel of the Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home.

Ruth Worlein
Ruth Nadine Worlein, a resident of Fossil, died Dec. 26, at Rosetta Assisted Living Center at the age of 82.
Mrs. Worlein was born March 28, 1922, in Mack Creek, Mo., to parents Ervin and Flora (Edison) Bonner. She married Joseph Worlein in Twin Falls, Idaho, and they moved to Spoos Mill, Ore., in 1940.
In 1941, they relocated Kinzua, Ore., then in 1961 to Portland, and finally in 1976 to Spray, Ore. During World War II, Mrs. Worlein, who went by her middle name, Nadine, worked as a finish welder in the shipyards. In Kinzua and in Portland, she worked for the U.S. Postal Service. She also worked in the Kinzua Mercantile for several years.
She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star, loved flowers and crafts of all kinds, and loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Wayland Hyatt of Fossil, Janet Christensen of Portland, and Dorothy Buell of Milton-Freewater; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, son George, her parents, four sisters, four brothers, and a granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Fossil Methodist Church. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Haven House in Fossil. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Scott Courtney
Warm Springs resident Scott Anthony Courtney died May 10, 2006, at Mountain View Hospital. He was 44.
Mr. Courtney was born Aug. 2, 1961, in Redmond, to parents Terry Courtney and Jeneil Nightpipe. He was a member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs and a longtime resident of Warm Springs, but did live in South Dakota for some time.
He was employed as a truck driver for Chilkat Construction. He enjoyed the "simple life" and being with nature.
Survivors include his son, Anthony Courtney of St. Frances, S.D.; father, Terry Courtney of Warm Springs; mother Jeneil Nightpipe; brothers, David Courtney of Junction City, John Brunoe of Milwaukie, Ore., and Steve Burnette of Mission, S.D.; sisters, Teri Jones of Oregon City, and Cher Burnette of Mission, S.D.
A mass of Christian burial was held May 12, at Blessed Kateri Catholic Church in Warm Springs. Committal followed at the Agency cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Hattie Hall
Madras resident Hattie Ann Hall died May 7, 2006, at the age of 74.
Mrs. Hall was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Parker, Ariz., to parents Aden and Sarah (Ham) Choate. She came to Madras in 1941 from Parker, Ariz., and graduated as valedictorian from Madras Union High School in 1949. Following high school, she worked as a deputy clerk in the Jefferson County Clerk's Office.
On July 9, 1950, she married Joe Hall in Madras. Together, they operated Madras Freightline until 1964. Later, she was an Ambassador Greeting Card representative at Erickson's Sentry, and also collected U.S. Census data in Jefferson County.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Madras, where she was the treasurer for many years. Her special interests included antiques, fishing, flower gardening and she was an accomplished artist. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Hall of Madras; son, Michael Hall of Madras; daughters, Regina Hall of Bend, and Camille and son-in-law Dr. Frank Mendoza of Madras; granddaughters, Melanie Miles and her husband Mark, Dr. Emily Ray, Sarah Phillips and Cassie Phillips; grandsons, Micah and Kainan Bodenlos; great-grandsons, Ian and Aden Holmes. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, and a brother.
A family graveside services was held May 10, at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park. A private family committal was held. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Lucille Hammett
Madras resident Lucille Mary Hammett died April 29, 2006, at Mountain View Hospital in Madras. She was 87.
Mrs. Hammett was born June 12, 1918, in Silex, Mo., to parents Frank and Parry (Coose) Mitchell. She was the seventh of nine children, and attended Catholic and public school in Portage De Sioux, Mo. She married Woodrow Talley on March 24, 1935. He preceded her in death. She married Beverly "Bud" Hammett on July 4, 1942. He also preceded her in death.
She came to Madras in 1952, where she became a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, serving as a past president of the alter society and being very involved with the church's CCD program.
Mrs. Hammett owned Lucille's Upholstery in Madras for 15 years. She and her husband also owned Bud Hammett Hauling and Excavating. She was a willing worker and she enjoyed people of all ages. Her biggest hobby was volunteering. Some things she volunteered for were Meals On Wheels and Special Olympics.
She was also very involved with the Seniors of Jefferson County, TOPS, was a lifetime member of the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary, and Jefferson County Pioneer Association.
She and her husband received the AARP national Community Service Award, and she received the Jefferson County Woman of the Year Award, Senior Citizen of the Year Award in 1999 from the chamber of commerce, and was also Jefferson County Senior Center Senior of the Year in 2002.
Survivors include her daughters, Willa Mae Hammett of Madras, Louise Middleton of Wasco, Ore.; sons, Eugene Talley of Covina, Calif., and Garnett Hammett of Clarkston, Wash.; sister, Alma Hammond of Hawk Point, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, and six siblings.
A memorial mass was held May 4, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madras. Committal will be at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Jefferson County Special Olympics or the Madras senior center. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Wesley Hansen
Metolius resident Wesley Hansen died May 7, 2006, at Mountain View Hospital in Madras. He was 87.
Mr. Hansen was born Nov. 23, 1918, in Bricelyn, Minn. On April 22, 1945, he married his wife Betty in Albert Lea, Minn. In 1950, they moved to Camas, Wash., then in 1979 to Vancouver, Wash., and in 1998 to Metolius.
He was employed at Crown Zellerback and retired in 1980.
Mr. Hansen was a member of the Free Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Moose and Elks lodges. His favorite pastime was weather-watching, and he also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, and loved his cats.
Survivors include his wife Betty Hansen of Metolius; sisters, Janet Fjermestad and Mary Newman, both of Camas, Wash.; son, Terry Hansen and his wife Rose of Madras; daughters, Jeanne Hansen of Arizona, Kathy Dwy of Madras, Barbara Niergarth and her husband Jim of Madras; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Leo, in 1998.
The funeral service was held May 11, at the Free Methodist Church in Madras, officiated by Rick Russell. The soloist was Marlena Hansen.
Mr. Hansen's ashes will be spread over Superstition Mountain in Arizona. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice of Madras, and the American Cancer Society. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funeral in Redmond.

Lawrence Hart
Madras resident Lawrence "Larry" Joseph Hart died May 5, 2006, at his home at the age of 88.
Mr. Hart was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Wagner, Mont., to parents Frank and Mable (LaFond) Hart. On July 2, 1938, he married Marie Vandam in Stephenson, Wis.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and after the war relocated to Madras in 1948 from Portland. Mr. Hart was self-employed as a welder and owned and operated his own business.
He was a charter member of the Madras Elks Lodge, and a former member of the Eagles Lodge. His special interests included dancing, especially square dancing and ballroom dancing. He loved to travel and visit new places, being outdoors fishing and hunting, and took great enjoyment in building projects.
Survivors include his sons, Stevens Hart of Madras, Norman Hart of Springfield, Curtis Hart of Madras; brothers, Norris Hart of Canby, Edward Hart of Eugene, and James Hart of Grants Pass; sister, Geraldine Freeman of Rogue River, Ore.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, and two sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., May 18, at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home. Final disposition will be at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Richard Manion
A graveside service for Richard Manion will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 20, at the Mount Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery.

Wendy Apgar
Former Madras resident Wendy Charlene Apgar died Feb. 12, of natural causes at her home in Gresham. She was 46.
Mrs. Apgar was born Oct. 24, 1959, in Prineville, to parents Jeanne and Bill Apgar. At the time of her birth, they lived in government housing on the Warm Springs Reservation. She spent her first two years there before moving with her parents and baby brother to the Hoopa Indian Reservation in Northern California. They moved back to Jefferson County three years later, where her parents still live.
Ms. Apgar attended school in Madras, graduating from Madras High School in 1977. Moving to Portland, she attended Mount Hood Community College, then worked in Portland prior to becoming disabled and having to leave the workforce.
She lived in the Gresham and Portland areas up until the time of her death. She was very active in Grace Community Church in Gresham and had many caring and supporting friends there. She also enjoyed flowers, working with small children, and doing crafts, of which she was an expert in many areas.
Survivors include her brother, Chris Apgar of Portland; sister, Michele Goodpasture of Bend; parents Bill and Jeanne Apgar of Madras; grandparents Paul and Iva Beebe of Warm Springs; 12 nieces and nephews; and one grand-niece and one grand-nephew.
A celebration of life service will be held Thursday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m., at the Grace Community Church in Gresham (date not yet set). Memorial contributions may be made to the church's community outreach program or to a charity of your choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Gresham Funeral Chapel.

Clinton Crandall
Madras resident Clinton E. Crandall died Feb. 8, 2006, at Mountain View Hospital at the age of 84.
Mr. Crandall was born Nov. 27, 1921 in Columbia, Iowa, to parents Lester and Myrtle (Lang) Crandall. He was a decorated war veteran and during World War II fought in many of the major European battles as a half-track driver. He was among the troops that stormed Omaha Beach on D-Day, fought with Patton's Third Army in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium, and helped liberate several prison camps in Germany.
He came to Central Oregon following the war and was a longtime Madras resident. He and his brother owned and ran the auction yard in Madras for many years.
He will be remembered as a man of many trades who could fix anything. During the D-Day invasion, he even used a fingernail file and small screwdriver to fix the half-tracks which had stalled on the beach.
His integrity was very important to him. He believed a handshake was his word. He was a very good cowman and really enjoyed working with cattle. He was well-read and enjoyed learning new things. His family referred to him as the family historian. Crandall will be missed at the Madras Truck Stop where he enjoyed three meals a day and drinking a cup of coffee with his friends.
Survivors include his brothers and their wives, Calvin and Sally Crandall of Metolius, Donald and Marlene Crandall of Bend, Carol and Jeanne Crandall of Madras; sisters and their husbands, Bonnie and Lyle Crecelius of Colbert, Wash., and Twila and Verling "Pete" Thomas of Corvallis; and 21 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Azel, and sisters Maxine, Pauline, Kathryn and Evelyn.
A funeral was held Feb. 13, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras, with burial at Mount Jefferson Memorial Park cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.
