Ruth A. Score McBride, 94, wife of former Madras city councilman Jack McBride and longtime Madras resident, died Nov. 2, of natural causes at Powell Valley Assisted Living in Gresham.
Born July 19, 1913, in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada, she grew up on the farm homesteaded by her parents Louis and Mariette Score.
In an oral biography, Ruth recounts life as homesteaders in an area where most of the neighbors spoke Norwegian or Swedish, and the farmers' worst fears were prairie fires, hail and electric storms.
As a child, Ruth rode her horse 3 1/2 miles to a one-room school with no electricity. As a teenager, when few women worked in the fields, Ruth drove the disk, plowing the furrows behind the men. During harvest, she drove a team of horses to haul wheat to the grain elevator in town, 13 miles away.

An avid bridge-player, with around 30 master points, Ruth also enjoyed golf and piano. She was an accomplished China painter, and won numerous blue ribbons at the Jefferson County Fair for her quilts, jams and relishes.
For about 30 years, from the late-`60s through the late-`90s, the McBrides spent winters at their home in Sun Lakes, Ariz. In 2005, Ruth moved to the Portland area to be near her family.
