Harley Wayne Carroll
Funeral services for Harley Wayne Carroll, 87, will be held Thursday, April 22, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Madras United Methodist Church.
Mr. Carroll died April 16. Public visitation will be Wednesday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday morning at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras.
Memorial donations may be made to Mountain View Hospice, in care of Mountain View Hospital.

Theresa McKinley-Avalos
Warm Springs resident Theresa Marie McKinley-Avalos died Feb. 14, 2007, at the age of 51.
Mrs. McKinley-Avalos was born Dec. 20, 1955, in Redmond to parents Delbert Frank Sr. and Maxine McKinley. She had a strong Christian faith and worked as a teacher and helper in a group home, and helped take care of her grandson who had autism.
Her special interests included doing beadwork and sewing.
Survivors include her mother, Maxine McKinley; daughter, Roseanne McKinley; brother, Alexander Tohet; grandchildren, Lupita Ocampo and Maximino Ruiz-McKinley; niece, Havianne Tohet; and nephew David LeClaire Sr.
A dressing service was held Feb. 16 at the Agency Longhouse in Warm Springs, and graveside service was held Feb. 17, at Red Lake cemetery near Simnasho. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

John Pitman
Madras resident John Harvey Pitman died Feb. 10, 2007, at the age of 89.
Mr. Pitman was born Feb. 7, 1918, in New Market, Iowa, to parents James and Elsa (Bensen) Pitman. On April 20, 1934, he and his wife Anna Pitman were married .
He served in the U.S. Army in North Africa and Sicilia, during World War II, and earned a bronze star. After the war, he was employed as a longshoreman. He and his second wife, Ruth, were married in 1984.
Mr. Pitman was a member of the Conservative Baptist Church in Madras, the Agate and Mineral Association, Elks Lodge and American Legion. He was a rockhound, an old car buff, enjoyed hunting and fishing and was fond of trains.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Pitman of Madras; sons, Harvey and his wife Carol Pitman of Portland; daughter, Carol Pitman of Henderson, Nev.; stepchildren, MelAnn and her husband David Kenel of Madeira, Calif., and James Pinker of Fairbanks, Alaska; niece Lelani Pitman of Portland; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Anna Pitman in 1982 and brother Harry Pitman.
Funeral services were held Feb. 16, at the Madras Conservative Baptist Church. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Madras Conservative Baptist Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

Gladys Barger
Madras resident Gladys Leora (Hoadley) Barger passed away on April 9, 2011, at the home of her daughter at the age 87.
She was born on Sept. 11, 1923, in Olds, Alberta, Canada, to parents Earl Sidney and Myrtle Melvina (Hutton) Hoadley.
She graduated from high school and married John Mathew Barger on July 29, 1942, in Seattle, Wash. The couple relocated to Madras from Homedale, Idaho, in April of 1951.
Besides being a homemaker and mother to her four daughters, She also worked as a potato grader for Gourmet Potatoes.
Mrs. Barger was a member and also very active in the Madras First Baptist Church for over 56 years. She was involved with 4-H programs for over 30 years and was a former member of the Madras Gem and Mineral Club. She was a member of the Mud Springs Grange since 1951 as well as being a former member of the Madras VFW Post.
In her spare time, Gladys enjoyed working in her garden. She also enjoyed crocheting, quilting, and embroidery. She was especially proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with all of them. She liked to cook for her church, friends, and family.
Survivors include her daughters and theirs husbands, Leora and the late Gerold Hodges of Madras, Donna and Wes Miller of West Linn, Betty Jean and Dale Kendall of Sandy, and Nancy and Phil Keller of Pueblo West, Colo.; brothers and their wives, LLoyd and Nona Hoadley of Ashland, and Raymond and Elaine Hoadley of Medford; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and husband John Barger.
Funeral Services were held on April 15, at the First Baptist Church in Madras. Memorial donations have been suggested to the First Baptist Church of Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Jeanne Apgar
Madras resident Jeanne Apgar, died Oct. 21, 2008, at the age of 70.
She was born June 30, 1938, in Syracuse, N.Y., to parents Iva and Paul Beebe. She attended schools in Syracuse, graduating with honors from North Syracuse High in 1955.
Mrs. Apgar took a year of post-graduate studies at Saranac Lake High prior to starting her registered nursing studies at Crouse Irving Teaching Hospital in Syracuse. She studied and worked as a nurse there until she became very sick and spent four months in bed, and was advised by her doctor not to return to school.
While attending school, she met her future husband, Bill Apgar, a forestry school student at the New York State College of Forestry at Syracuse University. They were married in Saranac Lake, N.Y., on Nov. 22, 1958.
The Apgars started their married life in Syracuse while Bill completed his senior year. In July 1959, they moved to Warm Springs, where he began his forestry career with the Bureau of Indian Affairs forestry branch.
They lived there until January 1962, when Bill transferred to Hoopa, Calif., for a promotion. Their daughter Wendy and son Chris were born in Warm Springs in 1959 and 1961, respectively. Their daughter Michele was born in 1964 while they were on the Hoopa Indian Reservation.
The Apgars transferred back to Warm Springs in 1965, and purchased a house in Madras, where Mrs. Apgar lived the remainder of her life.
Mrs. Apgar was a master craftsman, taking numerous blue ribbons at local county fairs as well as the state fair. She spent hours each day sewing clothes for her dolls, her husband's Western shirts and Pendleton jackets, dresses, blouses and skirts for herself, clothing for her kids and grandchildren, and a variety of other items.
She loved making and dressing her dolls, made numerous ceramic items, knitted socks and made quilts for her grandchildren and her friends' babies.
She loved to travel, camp, visit museums and places of interest, read, and visit with family and friends. She especially enjoyed camping along the Metolius River and visiting the Oregon Coast.
Over the years, she was active in Girl Scouts, PTA, Playhouse 97, singing in church choirs and on her own, the American Cancer Society, volunteering as a fire dispatcher, and serving as president and in other offices for the Oregon Fire Directors Association Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge, and a variety of other community activities, and supporting her husband in his various activities.
Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Bill Apgar of Madras; daughter, Michele of Madras; son, Chris of Portland, adopted sister, Lilita Abrenietis of Madras; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Wendy; parents, Paul and Iva Beebe; and her brother and sister, Jim and Donna Beebe.
A celebration of life service will be held at 3 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, at the Metolius Friends Church. Memorial donations have been suggested to Jefferson County Hospice, or the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Deschutes Memorial Gardens of Bend.

Milton Holliday
Warm Springs resident Milton Holliday died Oct. 20, 2008, at his home. He was 78.
Mr. Holliday was born Feb. 22, 1930, in Warm Springs, to parents Lena (Smith) and Benjamin Holliday Sr. He was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
On April 27, 1950, he married Buckie Teeman in Warm Springs. He was employed as a logger all of his life.
He was a member of the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church, and his special interests included being outdoors fishing, hunting and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Buckie Holliday of Warm Springs, daughter, Beatrice Lopez of Hillsboro; brother, Sherman Holliday of Warm Springs; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.
A private dressing ceremony was held. Funeral services were Oct. 21, at the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church, followed by burial at the Agency cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Ruth McCormick
Redmond resident Ruth Marie McCormick died Oct. 21, 2008, at the age of 86.
She was born Dec. 8, 1921, in Independence, Kan., to parents James and Grace Simpson. The family moved to Oregon when she was in the second grade, crossing in a Model-T. She worked with her family on farms, and also raised horses, cattle, chickens, pigs, milk cows, and dogs.
She graduated from Newberg High School in 1939, and in 1945 was named queen of the Tualatin Valley Rodeo.
She met Denney Hodson "Buck" McCormick at the Mountain Top School, and they were married there on Sept. 13, 1956. In March 23, 1968, they moved to Redmond where they ranched together, and grazed cattle with Hampton Butte Grazing Corporation.
Mrs. McCormick did many different types of jobs, from babysitting to housekeeping for the Redmond Hospital for years.
She was active in many organizations, including Chehalem Mountain Trail Riders, Chehalem Mountain Extension Unit, Buck Heaven Variant Club, Washington County Posse, Deschutes County Cowbelles from 1968 to 1975, Redmond First Baptist Church and the Redmond Community Church where she helped with Sunday school, and was a stockholder of the Deschutes County Fair.
Her special interests included fishing, hunting, camping in the beautiful Oregon outdoors, riding horses on the Skyline Trail (now Pacific Crest Trail), knitting, sewing, watching football on TV, and visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include her sons, Tim and his wife Lynne McCormick of Culver, Joe and wife June McCormick of Madras; granddaughters, Jill, Diana, Jessica and Kyle McCormick-Fisher, Whitney, Ginny; great-granddaughter, Karlye; brother, J. Arthur Simpson of Mississippi; sister, Irene Dotson of Ventura, Calif.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband Buck on Dec. 21, 1970, her parents, brother Kenneth, brother-in-law Ray Dotson, and sisters-in-law Arby and Jane Simpson.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at Redmond Memorial cemetery. A potluck at Culver Christian Church will follow the services. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Evelynn Sturgeon
Crooked River Ranch resident Evelynn Olivia Sturgeon died Oct. 22, 2008, at her home at the age of 79.
Mrs. Sturgeon was born Feb. 16, 1929, in Bergen, Norway, to parents Anders and Adelheid (Bjordal) Olsnes.
She moved to Seattle, Wash., in 1951, and was married to Johnny Ray Sturgeon, who preceded her in death. She came to Central Oregon after her health required her to move to a drier climate.
She loved animals and the mountains, and took great pride in entertaining her friends and family.
Survivors include her children, Heidi Tofting Dirk of Lacy, Wash., Gordon Tofting of Seattle, Kim Tofting of Seattle; grandson, Ronny Appillanes of Seattle; and brother, Olav Olsnes of Norway.
Private family services were held, with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Les Bryant
Madras resident Clarence Les Bryant died Jan. 31, 2005. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 4, at the United Methodist Church in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in care of Mountain View Hospital. A full obituary will appear in next week's Pioneer. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.
Floyd Phifer
Madras resident Floyd E. "Bus" Phifer died Jan. 25, 2005, at the age of 79.
He was born July 12, 1925, in Arnold, Neb., to parents Ralph and Ruth (Campbell) Phifer. He moved to Adrian, Ore., in 1938, where he lived until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He and Rosalee McDowell were married on March 3, 1947, in Madras, and in 1949, they moved to Culver. Mr. Phifer worked for a number of freight companies throughout his life. The last several years of his career, he worked for the Bend Portland Systems 99 delivery freight until his retirement in 1983.
He enjoyed most outdoor activities and sports, including fishing, hunting and recreational vehicle (RV) travel. He was very active with his family and also coached several years in the Jefferson County Little League program.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalee Phifer of Madras; son, Ron Phifer of Culver; daughters, Lea Pray of Moses Lake, Wash., and Shirley Kindig of John Day; brothers, Jim Phifer of Bandon, and Bernard Phifer of Calloway, Neb.; five grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.
A memorial service was held Jan. 28 at the United Methodist Church in Madras. A private family committal was held. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in care of Mountain View Hospital. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
