Robert Olson
A memorial service will be held for former Metolius resident Robert "Bobby" Olson, who died Sept. 20, 2010, at the age of 61. The service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at the Madras Elks Lodge No. 2017, 262 S.W. Second St., Madras.

Douglas Palmer
Warm Springs resident Douglas Ralph Palmer died March 28, 2011, at his home at the age of 65.
He was born on March 27, 1946, in The Dalles, to parents Harriman and Edith (Johnson) Palmer. He graduated from high school and was self-employed as a fisherman for the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. He was was also an enrolled member of the CTWS.
Survivors include his children, Avis Palmer, Douglas Palmer Jr., Harriman Palmer, Tucelia Hardy, Codi Ann Palmer, and Louetta Bird Palmer; and 20 grandchildren.
Dressing ceremonies were held on March 30, at Agency Longhouse. Burial was at the family cemetery on March 31. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Antoinette Pamperien
Warm Springs resident Antoinette Lucille (Queahpama) Pamperien died March 21, 2011, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born to Oscar and Irene (Quaempts) Queahpama on Dec. 26, 1938, in Prineville. She was named "Klush it lai."
Survivors include her brothers, Ralph (and spouse Michelle) Queahpama, Rafael (Nola) Queahpama; and sister Kathleen (Michael) Spaulding.
Also, numerous cousins and their children, numerous nieces and nephews and their children, including, from her mother's side, Louise Woods and daughters; the Quaempts and Queahpama families in Pendleton and the Yakama Reservation.
Her special family was her son's grandparents, Cliff and Faye Pamperien and all their children; her longtime friends, Phyllis Guerin, Mona Kiona and the Ike Family; Tina Fuller, Gus, Jazmin and Lacey Tufti; and Pastor Rick Ribeiro and his congregation.
She was preceded in death by her son Clifford; her parents; her grandparents, Chief Frank Queahpama and wife Squiempt, and Johnnie and Leslie (Hunt) Quaempts; brothers, Duane, Ira, Ernest Queahpama and Fred Blodgett Sr.; sister, Madeline Queahpama-Spino; stepdad, Ernest Sconewah; aunts, Jessie (Quaempts) Sulkey, Sadie Quaempts, Mae (Queahpama) Johns, Matilda (Queahpama) Mitchell, Nettie (Queahpama) Shawaway and Sylvia (Queahpama) Wallulatum; uncles, Loyd Queampts, Sampson Quaempts and Clayton Queahpama.
Mrs. Pamperien was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs. She was of Yakama/Warm Springs descent, enrolled with the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. She attended Warm Springs and Madras schools, and later graduated from Bacone College in Muskogee, Okla.
She worked at the front desk at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort for years, and in personnel, vital statistics and probate for the tribes.
She enjoyed attending the Warm Springs Presbyterian Church, powwows, doing crafts, going to yard sales, picking huckleberries, digging roots, camping, traveling, and being with family and friends.
She followed in her mother's footsteps by becoming a well-known cedar basket weaver. She taught family members and classes at the Warm Springs Museum. She was a member of the Northwest Basket Weavers, was a food gatherer for the longhouse, served on the Land Use Planning Committee and took part in the Native Circle of Hope.
Wahshut services were held at her home in Sidwalter Flat, and dressing ceremonies were held at the Presbyterian Church in Warm Springs. Overnight services were at the Simnasho Longhouse and she was laid to rest at the Simnasho cemetery on March 24.

Donna Jansen
Donna L. Jansen, 59, of Madras, passed away in her sleep April 12, 2011, in the hospice facility at Mountain View Hospital.
Mrs. Jansen was born Nov. 7, 1951, in Burns, to Norma L. Fallon. She grew up in Burns, but also had fond memories of the time when she lived in Jerome, Idaho, with her aunts Linda Fallon and Mary Smith.
In Burns, she lived on a ranch, participated in fair court, and graduated from Crane High School. After high school, she married and lived near Princeton, a tiny community in Harney County, and drove mail stage from Princeton to Burns to French Glen and back the next day.
She later moved to Moscow, Idaho, and then to Kansas, where she attended Johnson County Community College, in Overland Park, studying accounting and business management, and earning her insurance license. In Lawrence, Kan., she managed an insurance office for a number of years until returning to Burns, where she worked two part-time jobs -- for the justice of peace, and selling insurance.
In 1996, she moved to Culver and stayed with a friend until she was hired in May 1997 as the administrative assistant for Jefferson County, where she remained employed until her death.
In 2006, she was selected by the Republican Party to replace a candidate who had dropped out of the race of a County Commission position. Eight years ago, the Chamber of Commerce honored Mrs. Jansen with their Public Servant of the Year award.
Her interests included literature, art, home design, gardening and shopping, as well as keeping her husband from tormenting local government.
Survivors include her husband Steve Jansen; her son and son's wife, Matthew and Carla Davies of Hines; stepsons Tom Jansen of Canada, and Don Jansen of Ukiah, Calif.; brother Dwain Moss; sister and brother-in-law Tammera and Michael Karr of Southern Oregon; nephews Donald Moss and Brendan Karr; five grandchildren; one great-niece and one great-nephew; and aunts Jean Hunnecutt, Mary Smith and Linda Fallon. She was preceded in death by her son Jason Davies and mother Norma Morgan.
A celebration of Mrs. Jansen's life will be held Saturday, April 23, at 10 a.m. at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras, with Pastor Jeff Freshour of the Madras Conservative Baptist Church officiating.
A reception will follow at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mountain View Hospice. The family is also setting up a foundation fund at the Jefferson County Library, to allow contributions to be used to purchase books on her behalf.

Dwight "Bud" Knox
Dwight "Bud" Knox died April 12, 2011, at his home in Redmond.
He was born Oct. 29, 1927, in Gresham, to Roscoe and Emma (Gregson) Knox. He graduated from Crook County High School, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He married Margie Ditmore on July 4, 1982, in Redmond.
A longtime resident of Central Oregon, Mr. Knox came from a family of people who were pioneers in the area. He was a logger and a rancher, and enjoyed golfing and hunting in his spare time.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Knox of Redmond; daughter, Terisa Clark; three grandsons; and many stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Buck Knox, three sisters, and one brother.
A graveside service was held April 19, at Juniper Haven cemetery in Prineville. Contributions may be made to the Redmond/Sisters Hospice. People may sign the online guestbook at www.redmondmemorial.com.

Richard McKelvy
Former Madras area resident Richard Wayne McKelvy, 72, died April 4, 2011, at his home in Springfield with family by his side.
He was born March 6, 1939, in Phoenix, Ariz., to parents Americus and Thelma McKelvy. His family moved to Madras in the 1940s.
Mr. McKelvy was an Army veteran. He enjoyed many activities including genealogy research, cooking, gardening and traveling.
He was often called "Mr. Green Jeans" or "Mr. Fix-it" because he could fix or grow anything. Several times a year, he was dubbed "Our Chef" during big family dinners. He had a big heart and freely gave hugs to those he loved.
Survivors include his wife and best friend of 34 years, Linda McKelvy; children, Stacy Gerig of Albany, Amy Dowers of Nevada, Marnie Carlson of Metolius, Dusten Carlson of Madras and Dyan McKelvy of Terrebonne; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and sisters, Shirley Marihugh of Washington state and Wilma Mullins of Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wilbur, Bill and infant Ronald; and grandson, Tyler Dowers.
His memorial wish was for a family reunion. A big family reunion is planned at the Oregon Coast in June of this year.

Marguerite Olson
Longtime Jefferson County resident Marguerite Olson, 93, died peacefully April 15, 2011, at Mountain View Hospital in Madras in the company of her immediate family.
Born in Caldwell, Idaho, on Oct. 27, 1917, to Nellie and Roy Collins, she was the first of seven children. She attended Sunny Slope Grade School and graduated from Caldwell High School.
While employed as a telephone operator in Caldwell, she met Louis Olson and they were married in 1937. They operated the Collins Family Fruit Ranch and farmed in Vale, Ore., before purchasing land on Agency Plains in 1949.
The Olson family arrived in Central Oregon with the dedication of the water district in 1950 and began their long history of embracing the needs of the youth of the county. She and her husband supplemented their farming by instructing square dancing in the Central Oregon region.
The mid-1950s found Madras without structured activities for teenagers, so the Olsons dedicated Friday nights for the next decade to sponsoring and supervising teenage dances at the Odd Fellows Hall.
In addition, Mrs. Olson led 4-H clubs, held the office of worthy matron of the Concordia Chapter of Eastern Star, was a member of the Rebekahs, Lady Elks, Garden Club, Idaho Club, Go and Sew, Mud Springs Grange, Jefferson County Cow Belles, and was Woman of the Year for Jefferson County in 1959.
She enjoyed gardening and nurtured her yard with transplants from the mountains of Oregon, yards of relatives and neighbors, and assorted flora from the marginal lands around the county. Sundays were spent attending services at the United Methodist Church.
After turning over the family farm to the next generation, she began her retired life with extensive travel to Europe, the British Isles, New Zealand, Hawaii, the North American continent and took many cruises and tours. She wintered in Arizona, where she owned a condominium and enjoyed her hobbies of painting, weaving and various crafts, while continuing her travels.
Surviving are sons and their spouses, Ron and Kathie Olson of Redmond, Steve and Joanne Olson of Blairsville, Ga.; daughters and their spouses, Jodi and John Eagan, and Jeri and Lewis Fine, all of Madras; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers and their spouses, Bob and Bert Collins, Orvil and Velma Collins, and sister, Louise and husband Doug Endicott, all of Boise Valley, Idaho.
She was preceded in death by granddaughter Kimberly Olson; great-grandson Isaac Braid; two brothers and one sister.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, April 22, at the United Methodist Church in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested by the family to the Kimberly Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary, 470 N.E. A St., Madras, OR 97741.

Jolene Tufti
Jolene Marie Tufti, a resident of Warm Springs, died at her home on April 8, 2011, at the age of 42.
She was born on Dec. 21, 1968, in Winnemucca, Nev., to parents Earl and Shirley (Govenor) Tufti. She was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and attended schools in Madras.
She was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, and was a homemaker.
Survivors include her parents Earl and Shirley Tufti of Warm Springs; brothers, Tyree Stormbringer of Albany, Ferman Tufti of The Dalles, and Timothy Wainanwit of Warm Springs; sisters, Melinda Burgess of Salem, Rebecca Cruz of Canby, Natalie Burgess of Prineville, and Jessica, Earlene, and LeeAnn Tufti, all of Warm Springs.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, William Wainanwit Jr., Arnold Tufti, Lonnie Wainanwit, and sister, Priscilla Arthur.
Dressing ceremonies were held on Tuesday, April 12, at the Agency Longhouse. Burial was April 13, at Agency cemetery.

Donald Beake
Central Oregon pastor Donald McRae Beake died in Bend, of leukemia on March 19, 2010, at the age of 78.
He was born on Dec. 29, 1931, to parents William McRae Beake and Malinda (Peters) Beake in Youngstown, Ohio.
In 1958, he was ordained into the ministry of the Lutheran Church at Martin Luther Lutheran Church, Youngstown, Ohio. He graduated from Capital University and Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Divinity degrees.
In 1958, he married Jean Ann Sauers of Portland.
During his active ministry of 36 years (1958-1994), the Rev. Beake served the people of three congregations: Good Hope Lutheran, Lind, Wash.; Fir Lawn Lutheran, Sweet Home; and First Lutheran Church, Bend.
After coming to Bend in 1968, he served on many boards in the community including Red Cross, Hospice, United Way, Deschutes Mental Health, Selective Service (Draft) Board, Kiwanis, and the Ethics Committee and chaplaincy program at St. Charles Medical Center.
He enjoyed visiting with people, talking and listening to their life stories, joys and sorrows. He was a humble, caring, and loving pastor.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Ann Beake of Bend; son, Jon McRae Beake, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, American Falls, Idaho; daughter, Jody Marie Beake, a high school math teacher in Klamath Falls; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donn and Nancy Kruse, and his nieces and nephews, Donn, Dan, Kathy, Kristie, Marty and Michael.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m., at Zion Lutheran Church, 1113 S.W. Black Butte Blvd., Redmond. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund.
