Josephine Bonnarens
Madras resident Josephine "Jo" Edith Bonnarens died March 30, 2010, at East Cascade Retirement Center at the age of 92.
Mrs. Bonnarens was born Oct. 11, 1918, in Portland, to William C. and Mary Aigner Braatz. She was raised in Milwaukie, Ore., and attended business school in Portland. In 1949, she took the stage (bus) from Portland to Lakeview, where she found work as the bookkeeper for Carl Lange's Dodge Dealership, John Dalen's Pontiac Dealership in the early 1950s, and Danny Collins Chevrolet Dealership in the late 1950s.
She married
John Louis Bonnarens in June 1950 in Reno, Nev., and they resided in Lakeview. She and her husband moved to Redding, Calif., in 1960.
Mrs. Bonnarens relocated to Portland in the early 1960s, and worked for years as the office manager for Marv Tonkin Ford. Later, she also operated her own auditing business and traveled to many states, working with Automatic Data Processing Inc., and Reynolds and Reynolds, selling and setting up computer bookkeeping systems for auto dealers, as well as private businesses.
In 1980, she moved to Heppner, Ore., to consult for new auto dealer Ron McDonald. This became a long and loving relationship with the McDonalds, who became her second family. She later helped with the dealership's move to Madras.
Mrs. Bonnarens retired in the 1990s and lived in Milwaukie for several years. She was active in business organizations, helped with class reunions, traveled, and had many friends. She became ill in the late 1990s and moved to Madras to be close to her friends.
Survivors include her stepdaughter-in-law, Frances Bonnarens of Lebanon; stepgrandsons, Joseph Bonnarens and family in Forest Grove, James Bonnarens and family of Cache, Okla.; and her close friends and caretakers, Ronald and Joan McDonald of Madras. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her stepson, Joseph.
A memorial celebration will be held April 9, at East Cascade, Building A. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Alzheimer's Association or Mountain View Hospice, in care of Mountain View Hospital. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Roberta Lucas
Antelope resident Roberta Emily Lucas, 97, died March 29, following a car accident.
Known to many as "Bertie," she was born Sept. 14, 1912, a twin to Robert Schilling, to parents Paul and Anna Schilling in Kent, Ore. She attended school until the eighth grade, while helping on the family ranch located near Kent.
Mrs. Lucas led a very pioneering and diversified life. She was a wife, homemaker, waitress, school bus driver, and ranch hand, having worked at many of the area ranches, including the Big Muddy.
She loved horses and bred and showed her own line of quarter horses. She had many stories of them to tell over the years. She played the accordion in bands for dances around Antelope, where she lived most of her adult life.
She is survived by her husband of 35 years, Don Lucas of Antelope.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., April 13, at the Antelope Community Church.
Debra Thomas
Services have been set for Madras resident Debra Marie Thomas, 56, who passed away March 24, following an extended illness.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 8, at the Madras Conservative Baptist Church.
Helen Bentley
Ashwood resident Helen Violet Bentley died Dec. 10, 2001, at her home. She was 60.
Mrs. Bentley was born Nov. 3, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents Joseph and Helen (Pepoy) Mayer. In 1962 she married
Merlyn Bentley in Hemlock, Ore. She was a homemaker who also enjoyed doing crafts and rockhounding. She moved to Ashwood, her favorite rock collecting place, a year ago.
Survivors include her husband, Merlyn Bentley of Ashwood; son, Guy Bentley of Ashwood; mother, Helen Mayer of Springfield; and brother, Bill Mayer of Springfield.
A memorial service was held Dec. 15, at her home. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Kenneth Hiscoe
Culver resident Kenneth Roy Hiscoe died at the home of his brother at Lake Chinook Village Dec. 10, 2001, at the age of 60.
Mr. Hiscoe was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Boston, Mass., to parents William C. and Olive (Cook) Hiscoe Sr. He graduated from high school in Beaverton in 1959, then served three years in the U.S. Army.
He worked several years in the Culver area, where he owned and operated a crawdad fishing boat on Lake Billy Chinook, and also worked as a bartender and cook.
His special interest included music, camping, outdoor sports, and especially fishing.
Survivors include his brothers, William C. Hiscoe Jr. of Lake Chinook Village in Culver, Clifford Hiscoe of Missoula, Mont., and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Elizabeth Ann Herr.
At his request, no services were held. Autumn Funerals of Redmond was in charge of arrangements.
Lloyd Martens
Former area resident Lloyd Arthur Martens died Dec. 4, 2001, at Northern Nevada Medical Center in Sparks, Nev., at the age of 72.
Mr. Martens was born May 19, 1929, to parents Minnie and Arthur Martens in St. Johns, Mich. He joined the Navy on April 25, 1947, and was stationed on the vessels of USS William C. Lawe, and USS Carmick. While in the Navy he traveled around the world. On Jan. 31, 1950 he was honorably discharged.
He worked as a police reserve with the San Leandro, Calif., Police department from 1961 to 1965, then moved to Madras, where he worked for the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office from 1972 to 1986. He then worked as the Culver City Police Chief until his retirement in 1996. Mr. Martens then moved to Stagecoach, Nev., in 1998 and took a job with the Eldorado Casino in 2000 as a security guard, and worked there until the time of his death.
He was a member of the Jefferson County Search and Rescue Team for 24 years, Jefferson County Mounted Sheriff's Posse, and a past exalted ruler of the Madras Elks Lodge.
Survivors include his wife of 29 years, Gayle Martens of Stagecoach, Nev.; sons, Steven Martens of South Carolina, and Mike Martens of LaGrande; daughters, Kathy Hayward of San Leardro, Calif., and Cindy Morton of Madras; brothers, Elwin Martens of St. Johns, Mich., and Willard Martens of Reno, Nev.; sister, Marilyn Argersinger of St. Johns, Mich.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and daughter, Vickie Martens.
Funeral services were held Dec. 10, at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial cemetery in Feenley, Nev.
Kathleen Meachem
Kathleen Dorothy Meachem, 85, of rural Wapato, Wash., died Dec. 9, 2001, in Providence Toppenish Hospital.
Mrs. Meachem was born Feb. 17, 1916, in LaConner, Wash., to David and Lucy (McCloud) Gates. She was raised in the LaConner area, then attended Chemawa Indian Boarding School near Salem, where she graduated from high school. She married
Clifford Meachem in Dallesport, Wash., in July of 1935. She was a member of the Swinomish Indian Tribe of LaConner, Wash.
She was deeply interested in her family, and attended sporting events and concerts of the children and grandchildren. She and her husband were avid rockhounds, traveling many miles to shows an digs. Mrs. Meachem was also a lifetime reader, reading everything from newspapers to medical books. She also enjoyed bingo, and working in her garden.
Survivors include her husband, Clifford Meachem of Wapato, Wash.; daughters, Colleen and her husband Clint Reimer of Toppenish, Wash., Sandra Lawver of Portland, Maxine and her husband Larry Stephens of Prineville; brother, Patrick Joseph and his wife Katie Gates of Marysville, Wash.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, Darrin Lawver, and a stepson, Rick Stephens.
Funeral services were held Dec. 12, at Wapato Community Presbyterian Church. Burial was at the Reservation Community Memorial Park west of Wapato. Donations have been suggested to the Youth Program at Wapato Community Presbyterian Church. Arrangements were under the direction of Merritt Funeral Home.
Alvin Quaale
Former area resident Alvin Quaale died Dec. 14, in a Tucson Arizona hospital. He was 84.
Mr. Quaale was born Aug. 16, 1917, at the homestead of his parents, Ole and Bernitina Quaale, east of Gateway. After farming in the Gateway area, he had a farm at Fossil, where he and his wife farmed until his retirement. They then moved to Arizona, where he lived until his death.
Survivors include his sister, Mabel Konkler of Redmond; niece Cristy Carlson of Winthrop, Wash., and daughters, Penny Kramer and her children, Olivia and Sophia, of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Melinda Walsh and children Jason and Kayla of Bend.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; his parents; his sister, Esther; and brothers, Emil, Oswald and Joseph.
No funeral service was held and there was a private family disposition of remains. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Devin Roe
Six-year-old Devin Michael Roe of Culver died Dec. 5, 2001, in a car-train accident.
Devin was born Feb. 28, 1995, in Madras to parents Steven and Sandy (Metcalf) Roe. He was a first-grader at Culver Elementary School. He was full of life, very inquisitive, comical and mischievous. Devin enjoyed all sports, motorcycles, monster trucks and fire trucks. He wanted to be a fireman just like his dad when he grew up.
He is survived by his father and brother, Steven and Ethan Roe of Culver; grandparents, Connie and Lon Larson, Earl and Angela Metcalf, and Mel and Wanda Roe; his great-grandparents, Louise and Bill Walker and Imogene and Wilbur Smith; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Jason Roe
Fifteen-year-old Jason Dwayne Roe of Culver died Dec. 5, 2001, following a car-train accident.
Jason was born Jan. 8, 1986, in Redmond to parents Steven and Sandy Roe. He was a freshman at Culver High School, who was involved in dance, both jazz and ballet. He enjoyed drawing as well as building models and collected Oriental art. His aspiration as to become an artist. Jason was warm, friendly, and articulate. He was very creative and was a high-achiever who would always be there to help, smile, or give.
He is survived by his father and brother, Steven and Ethan Roe of Culver; grandparents Connie and Lon Larson, Earl and Angela Metcalf, and Mel and Wanda Roe; great-grandparents, Louise and Bill Walker and Imogene and Wilbur Smith; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Sandy Roe
Culver resident Sandy Lee Roe died Dec. 5, 2001, as the result of a car-train accident. She was 32.
Mrs. Roe was born Jan. 5, 1969, in Nampa, Idaho, to parents Earl Metcalf and Connie (Walker) Larson. She married
Steven Roe on Aug. 27, 1985.
Sandy was employed with the special education department at the Culver School District. She loved the opportunity to work and play with the students and faculty of Culver.
She enjoyed doing crafts and often had several craft projects going on at the same time. Sandy loved the word of God and also had a great love for her family's happiness and those involved in her life.
Her aspiration as to become a teacher. She was an outgoing woman who was always willing and ready to help. Sandy was a gifted spiritual person who was gracious and fun. She loved the Lord and her pride would show through her smiles and the smiles of her husband and children.
Survivors include her husband, Steven Roe of Culver; son, Ethan Roe of Culver; mother and stepfather, Connie and Lon Larson; father and stepmother, Earl and Angela Metcalf; grandparents, Louise and Bill Walker and Imogene and Wilbur Smith; brother, Scott Rhodes; stepbrother, William Hayes; and sister, Kim Rhodes.
A memorial service was held Dec. 13, at Culver High School Gymnasium. A private family final disposition was held.

Tina Roe
Fourteen-year-old Tina Marie Roe of Culver died Dec. 5, 2001, following a car-train accident.
Tina was born July 24, 1987, in Madras to parents Steven and Sandy (Metcalf) Roe. She was a freshman at Culver High School and was known as a "carbon copy" of her mother. She wanted to be just like her mom -- giving, witty and helpful. Tina's nickname was "Goofy," given to her by her mother.
Her interests were dance, animals, photography and her Barbie collection. She was her daddy's girl. Her aspiration was to become a "dancing veterinarian photographer."
She is survived by her father and brother, Steven and Ethan Roe of Culver; grandparents, Connie and Lon Larson, Earl and Angela Metcalf, and Mel and Wanda Roe; great-grandparents, Louise and Bill Walker and Imogene and Wilbur Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
