Josepha Crowe
Warm Springs resident Josepha M. Crowe died Feb. 9, 2002, at her home. She was 68.
Mrs. Crowe was born Dec. 22, 1933, in Simnasho to parents Clarence Meanus and Lillie Cushingway. She was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. She was a homemaker all of her life, and was a member of the Elliott Palmer Auxiliary Post No. 4217.
Survivors include her children, Owens Yahtin, Walter Payne, Josie William, Richard Payne, and Linda Meanus, all of Warm Springs, and Virgil Watson of New Mexico; brother, Marvin Meanus of Warm Springs; sisters, Hilda Culpus and Jeanette Yazzie, both of Warm Springs, Nancy Yallup of Wapato, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A dressing ceremony was held Feb. 12, at Agency Longhouse, followed by overnight services. Burial was Feb. 13, at Tenino cemetery in Warm Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.

Alta Palmer
Madras resident Alta Mae Palmer died Feb. 9, 2002, at East Cascade Assisted Living Center. She was 73.
Mrs. Palmer was born March 23, 1928, in Carthage, S.D., to parents Simeon and Emma (Garness) Collinson. In 1939 her family moved from South Dakota to Illinios, where she finished grade school. They they relocated to St. Paul, Minn., where she graduated from Wilson High School in 1945. Following graduation, she moved to Lebanon, Ore., and worked nine years in an office doing accounts receivable. While in Lebanon, she joined the Pearl Rebekah Lodge No. 47, continued as a member until 1967, and served as Noble Grand.
It was also in Lebanon that she met Harold "Bud" Palmer at a dance hall. They were married on Feb. 4, 1954, in Lebanon. Her husband's job required them to move frequently, so they purchased a travel trailer for their home.
In the early 1960s, they settled in Springfield and went into the grocery business. Mrs. Palmer joined Beta Sigma Phi in January 1964 and in May of 1989 earned the title of Preceptor Alpha Tau of Beta Sigma Phi. She enjoyed her years in Beta Sigma Phi immensely.
The Palmers sold the grocery business and retired to travel the countryside for a while. Looking for a permanent place to retire, they lived in Bend for a while, where she worked for Bend Credit Reporting, then finally settled in Madras, where she helped her husband in his radiator business.
Her special interests included hunting, fishing, and riding snow mobiles. Her granddaughter, Jesse, was the apple of her eye.
Survivors include her husband, Bud Palmer of Madras; sons, Michael Palmer of The Dalles, and Jeffrey Palmer of Redmond; and granddaughter, Jesse Palmer. She was preceded in death by brothers, Delbert and Simeon Collinson Jr.
A memorial service was held Feb. 14, at East Cascade Assisted Living Center.

Donald Wires
Madras resident Donald N. Wires died Feb. 15, in Madras at the age of 93.
Mr. Wires was born July 28, 1908, in Mound, B.C., Canada. He was employed as a welder and ship builder in Portland and retired in 1972.
On Feb. 1, 1997, he married Irene Peck in Madras. He had lived in Central Oregon since 1954, residing in Redmond, and for the past five years in Madras. Mr. Wires was a member of the Senior Citizens of Jefferson County, Mud Springs Grange Hall, Union No. 701 Operating Engineers, and was a member and volunteer with the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary.
He helped construct Round Butte Dam, was an excellent musician, was very strong physically, and loved hunting, fishing, dogs, chickens, and wild animal watching.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Wires of Madras; daughters, Betty Smith of Florence and Cheryl Hudson of Bakersfield, Calif.; sons, Dennis Harrison of Caldwell, Idaho, Billy Harrison of White City, Ore., and Floyd Bauer of Madras; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchild; three great-great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Funeral services were held Feb. 18, at Deschutes Memorial Chapel in Bend. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Deschutes Memorial Funeral Home in Bend.

Eleazer DuPont
Metolius resident Eleazer Claudio "Shorty" DuPont died March 27, 2002, at his home. He was 87.
Mr. DuPont was born Jan. 15, 1915, in Los Pinos, N.M., to parents Eduardo and Veronice DuPont. On May 28, 1928, he and Ana de Jesus were married in Del Norte, Colo. The family moved to Metolius in 1955 from Colorado. Mr. DuPont was employed as a plant manager for Gourmet Foods until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He enjoyed working in his yard, fishing, being with his family and going to the Jefferson County Senior Center.
Survivors include his children, Frances Retherford of Metolius, Mary Shull of Bend, Leroy DuPont of Vancouver, Wash., Donna Boatman of Metolius, Hilda Stephens of Metolius, Alonzo DuPont of Madras, Patrick DuPont of Metolius; sisters, Josie Martinez and Rosie Lucero, both of Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one granddaughter, two great-grandchildren, three brothers, and two sisters.
A Recitation of the Rosary was held March 31, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Madras, with Mass of Christian Burial on April 1, also at the church. Burial was at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mt. View Hospice, in care of Mountain View Hospital.

Dorothy Harrington
Madras resident Dorothy Margaret (Slavens) Harrington died March 24, 2002, at East Cascade Assisted Living Center at the age of 91.
Mrs. Harrington was born Feb. 28, 1911, in Walterville, Ore., to parents Edwin and Mabel (Easton) Schwering. She was raised in Walterville. After graduation from high school, she began nurses training in Eugene. She married Joseph Slavens on July 4, 1930, and they lived in Coburg, Eugene, and the Santa Clara area for many years, operating Santa Clara Market until moving to Central Oregon in 1948.
They raised Polled Hereford cattle in Prineville and Redmond, then finally settled in Madras in 1952. Dorothy and her son ran the meat department for the Madras Market for many years.
Joseph passed away in 1960, and in 1961 she went into the real estate business, working for Balfour Realty, where she eventually became a broker. In 1968 she married Harry Harrington. In 1970, she was recognized in the Who's Who of American Women with World Notables. She was active in the Business and Professional Women's Association. She and her son developed and started building homes in the Wistful Vista subdivision. Returning to Eugene, Dorothy continued to stay active in real estate and at the senior center in Springfield. The Harringtons returned to Madras in the 1970s, and she helped her son with homes in Bend.
Her special interests included dancing, being active in the Jefferson County Senior Center, Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary, crocheting hundred of baby blankets and caps for newborns at the hospital. She also helped out at the Ron McDonald dealership running errands and greeting people with a big smile.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Harrington of Madras; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Ron McDonald of Madras; daughter-in-law, Doris Lee Slavens of Kennewick, Wash.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph, and a son, Harold Slavens.
A Recitation of the Rosary was held March 27, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel, and Mass on March 28, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Burial was at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in care of Mountain View Hospital, or the Jefferson County Senior Center.

Jane E. Marion
Culver resident Jane E. Marion died March 26, 2002, at Central Oregon Community Hospital in Redmond at the age of 72.
Mrs. Marion was born May 8, 1929, in Gary, South Dakota, to parents Elmer and Rachel (Thompson) Stoltenburg. She moved west in 1949, settling in Madras and lived primarily in Metolius, then Culver. On May 12, 1980, she married Charles Marion in Vancouver, Wash. She retired after a 31-year career with the Opportunity Center of Central Oregon, and was one of the original teachers when the center began in Prineville.
She enjoyed and loved her family, reading, being involved in the SMART program at Metolius Elementary, being a member of the Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary until her health prevented her, and being a member of the Rebekahs in Madras. She was also a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Madras.
Survivors include her husband, Charles R. Marion of Culver; son, Michael Funk of Culver; two daughters, Janell Miller and Connie Gandy, both of Madras; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jerome Stoltenburg of Bend. She was preceded in death by a grandson, a great-grandson, and her first husband, Bud Fund, who died in 1967.
A graveside service was held March 29 at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras, with Autumn Funerals in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the SMART program, and Mountain View Hospital Auxiliary, at 470 NE A St., Madras, OR 97741.

Katherine Sperling
Madras resident Katherine May Sperling died March 26, 2002, at her home at the age of 55.
Mrs. Sperling was born March 18, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to parents Orval and Ruth (Cooper) Lawrence. On June 26, 1992, she married Frank Sperling in Dallas, Ore. They moved to Madras in 1994 and for many years she worked as a checker of the Ross IGA Grocery Store.
She had a good heart and got a lot of pleasure out of helping people in need. She volunteered many hours for Mt. View Hospice, and the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program. Her other interests included baking, especially raising Chihuahuas.
Survivors include her husband, Frank Sperling of Madras; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Weds Allums of Bellville, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Jolene Bowley of Madras; seven grandchildren; brothers, John, Bill, Robert and Donnie Lawrence, all of Houston, Texas; sisters, Pat Ralston and Pam Evans, both of Houston, Texas.
A memorial service was held March 30, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras, with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in care of Mountain View Hospital.

Robert Rosenbalm
McMinnville resident Robert Ray Rosenbalm died from cancer March 21, 2002 at his home. He was 46.
Mr. Rosenbalm was born Sept. 21, 1955, in McMinnville. He attended Sheridan Elementary School and graduated from Deer Park High School in Deer Park, Wash. He was very active and talented in the music program and stood out as a trumpet player.
He worked in the woods as a timber faller all his life. Music was a big part of his life and he enjoyed doing karoke and had a beautiful singing voice. He enjoyed people, fishing, playing golf and pool, and bowling.
Survivors include his wife, Carolin of Madras; parents, Floyd and Dawnie Rosenbalm of Willamina, and Jim and Bonnie Hawley of Deer Park, Wash.; daughter, Rachelle of McMinnville; step-daughters, Jody Ferris of Prineville, Kim McWhorter and Heidi Phillips, both of Madras; brothers, Ric of Arlington, and Russ of Auburn, Calif.; sister, Roxanne Smith of Deer Park, Wash.; half-sisters, Gina Rosenbalm of McMinnville and Kathy Hammond of Nashville, Ind.; step-brothers, Brian and Mark Hawley of Morgantown, Ind.; two grandsons, Austin of Prineville and Zane of Madras; grandmother, Mignon McGee of Willamina; uncle, Lloyd Rosenbalm of Willamina; aunts, Jean Abderhalden of St. Paul, Ore., Molly Crisp of Portland, Colleen Stahl of Keizer, and Kathleen Patterson of Sheridan; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service was held March 25 at Culver Nazarene Church. Inurnment will be private. Memorial donations have suggested to Mountain View Hospice. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Ione Wallan
Madras resident Ione Wallan died March 25, 2002, at East Cascade Assisted Living Center. She was 86.
Mrs. Wallan was born Oct. 30, 1913, in Watts, Okla., to parents Charles and Helen Oxford. She was married to Floyd "Skip" Wallan. He preceded her in death on March 9, 2002. She had lived in Madras only a short time, having moved here from Springfield.
Survivors include her daughter, Helen Simpson of Springfield.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Springfield. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Isabellel Fretheim
Madras resident Isabelle Floretta Fretheim died May 28, 2002, at her home at the age of 85.
Mrs. Fretheim was born July 8, 1916, in Frazee, Minn., to parents Ray and Floretta (Seeger) Jepson. In 1933 she married Willard E. Fretheim at Detroit Lakes, Minn. During World War II, she worked as a welder in the Portland Shipyards. She also worked for 16 years at BiMart in Eugene, where she lived for many years. Five years ago, she moved to Madras to be near her son and daughter-in-law.
Her special interests included gardening, doing handcrafts and being with her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Ray Fretheim of Madras; brothers, Ralph, George, Jim, David, Bob, Don, and Ernie Jepson, all of Minnesota; sisters, Betty Palubieki and Olive Erkkila, both of Minnesota; three grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard Fretheim in 1980, her parents, and one sister.
A funeral service was held June 3, at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Chapel, followed by burial at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice in care of Mountain View Hospital in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.

Barbara Hylton
Prineville resident Barbara Dale Hylton died May 26, 2002, at the age of 66.
Mrs. Hylton was born September 17, 1935, in the small town of Hailey, Idaho, to Silas and Virda (Worthington) Allred. She grew up in Hailey and attended schools there.
On April 1, 1951, Barbara married Clark David Hylton in Hailey. In 1952, they moved to Prineville, and lived at the Ochoco Ranger Station. While living there they had three children. In 1965, they moved into Prineville where she has since resided.
Mrs. Hylton loved working with people, and loved her jobs working in various retail stores in Prineville. She had a love and a passion for bowling, and really enjoyed coaching the youth bowling program. She spent 30 years with the Prineville Bowling Association, serving in various leadership positions. These positions were both local and state level. She also served as the Secretary for the Mop Droppers League for 26 years and was elected into the Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1995.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and the Eagles Auxiliary. She loved the outdoors and spent hours tending her garden of roses. One of her greatest treasures was her fish pond, created by her son Stuart. Her true pride and joy was her grandson Jared, and she enjoyed spending time with him.
Survivors include her daughters, Bobbe and husband Larry Bilyeu of Baker City, Annette Hylton of Madras, grandson Jared Bilyeu of Ashland, mother Virda Allred of Prineville, brother Donald and wife Chelta Allred of Park City, Utah, sister Lois Waters of Paicines, Calif., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was her husband Clark, son Stuart, father Silas, sister Wanda Shacklett and her beloved companion of the last 13 years, her dog Mandy.
A graveside service was held Thursday, May 30, at Juniper Haven cemetery in Prineville. Bishop Rulon Workman conducted the service.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Women's Bowling Association, P.O. Box 142, Prineville, Oregon or the charity of your choice. Whispering Pines Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
