Mary Linda Dent
Mary Linda Dent, 81, died peacefully of natural causes in San Jose, Calif., on June 21, 2006 surrounded by her five sons.
She was born in Rockford, Ill., to Guilio and Argia Campoli and most recently resided in Cupertino, Calif.
She spent the majority of her life in Central Oregon (Redmond and Madras) as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
She is survived by her five sons, Robert Dent of Bend, Gary Dent of Beaverton, Jack Dent of Brooks, Doug Dent of Prineville, and Skip Dent of Hope, Alaska; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Dent will be remembered for her acts of kindness, gentle disposition, sense of humor, and unconditional love for her family. Whenever asked about her life, she proudly stated she had five sons and her first and foremost thoughts were always for her boys.
Graveside services were held at the Mount Hope cemetery in Morgan Hill, Calif., June 24. Arrangements were by Habing Family Funeral Home, Gavilan Hills Memorial Park, 129 Fourth St., Gilroy, Calif.

Orval McManman
Former Madras resident Orval Francis (Mac) McManman died June 22, at the Oregon Veterans Home in The Dalles, which he entered two weeks before his death. He was 84.
He was born in Bend on March 17, 1922, to Frank and Ethel McManman and was raised in Aumsville, Ore., with older brother Frank LaVern. He served in the Navy during World War II. On June 15, 1947, he married Leona Haynes.
He spent most of his adult life in Central Oregon, living in Bend, Prineville, Madras and The Dalles. He worked as a farmer, a choker-setter in the woods, a brakeman for the Prineville Railroad and as a concrete inspector for Ebasco during the construction of Pelton Dam. He later worked in maintenance for Portland General Electric Company at the Pelton and Round Butte hydroelectric projects.
Mr. McManman worked as an executive housekeeper for Mountain View Hospital in Madras, as an executive housekeeper at Columbia Park Hospital in The Dalles, as a maintenance worker for the Army Corps of Engineers at The Dalles and John Day hydroelectric projects, and as a maintenance worker for Fort Dalles Museum.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of The Dalles. He liked being with his family and the various dogs that found their way into his life.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Haynes of The Dalles; son, Don McManman of Shoreline, Wash., and daughters, Marie Torrillo, of Portland, and Judy McManman of Vancouver; and two grandchildren, Michael and Senie. He was preceded in death by his son Dan in 1995.
At his request, there will be no service. Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Gorge, the First Christian Church or the American Lung Association.

Arthur McGreer
Clarno resident Arthur Lloyd McGreer died May 16, 2003, at the age of 89.
Mr. McGreer was born Feb. 9, 1914, in Edgewater, Colo., to parents Hugh and Irene McGreer. On Oct.22, 1939, he married Kathryn Kelly in Boise, Idaho. They owned and operated the McGreer Ranch in Clarno.
His special interests included watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on TV, and working on the ranch. He loved his family and his dog, Bullet.
Survivors include his son,Kelly McGreer of Clarno; daughter, Patricia McGreer of Olympia, Wash.; brother, Henry McGreer of Hood River; sister, Helen Lewis of Seattle, Wash.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife.
Funeral services were held May 24 at the Antelope Community Church, with arrangements under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Fossil Senior Center, or Fossil Ambulance Company.

Teresa Hatfield
Madras resident Teresa Martina Hatfield died May 21, 2003, at her home. She was 76.
Mrs. Hatfield was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Enterprise to parents Clarence and Barbara (Goebel) Burgett. She served in the military training program as a cadet nurse from 1944 to 1947.
On May 9, 1948, the married Donald Hatfield in Heppner. In 1958 they moved to Madras from Lexington, Ore., and here opened Hatfield's Department Store, of which she was the co-owner.
She was a member of the Madras Conservative Baptist Church, and an avid supporter of the Madras Pregnancy Resource Center.
Survivors include her husband, Don Hatfield of Madras; children and their spouses, John and Jennifer Hatfield of Madras, Jack and Susan Hatfield of Portland, Donna and Chuck Streamer of Walla Walla, Wash.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held May 27, at the Madras Conservative Baptist Church. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Madras Pregnancy Resource Center. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Melvin Lewis
Madras resident Melvin Woodrow Lewis died May 18, 2003, at the age of 89.
Mr. Lewis was born Jan. 27, 1914 in Jamestown, Neb., to parents Thomas and Minnie Lewis. He graduated from Jamestown High School, then farmed in Nebraska until the Depression era, when the family moved in 1936 to Springfield, Ore. There he worked in the construction of the Roseborough Lumber Company.
On Oct. 21, 1938, he married Verna Jones in Vancouver, Wash. They lived in Springfield until 1948, when he moved to Madras where the North Unit Irrigation Project was in progress. The following year he was joined in Madras by his wife and children and they homesteaded an 80-acre farm on Agency Plains north of Madras.
The farm he operated included a small feed lot operation. As the years passed, his son Rich worked with him, and continued the family farming operation when Melvin retired in 1980. Rich was later joined by a third generation grandson Leroy "Butch" Buck in an expanded farming capacity.
Mr. Woodrow enjoyed the beauty of nature, woodworking, fishing, baseball and was active as a lifetime member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. After retiring, he greatly enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include his children, Karen Mills of Helena, Mont., and Richard Lewis of Madras; brother, Keith Lewis of Eugene; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren; and his caring extended family at East Cascade Assisted Living Center in Madras, where he resided. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Verna in 2001.
Funeral services were held May 23, at Bel-Air Colonial Chapel in Madras. Memorial donations have been suggested to the Odd Fellows Lodge No. 194 in Madras. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home.

Jackalin Thompson
Jackalin Anne Thompson was born July 24, 1973, in Leicester, England. Her remains were found May 1, 2003.
She left her Culver home for a walk on Sept. 1, 2001, and when she never returned, she was reported as missing the next evening. Mushroom pickers discovered her remains 25 miles southwest of Madras on May 1, 2003.
Jackalin was a loving wife and mother of two daughters in Culver. She owned a steel fabrication, commercial welding business, and was starting school for pediatric massage. Prior to that, she owned and ran a restaurant in Portland.
Survivors include her husband, Steve Thompson; daughters, Alexandria Stafford and Taylor Thompson; mother, Colleen Kaady; father, Jack Burdett; stepfather, Terry Jolley; sisters, Claire Stafford, Amanda Freeman, Christine Jolley, Jessica Kaady; brother, Daniel Kaady; and six nieces and nephews.
A private family service was held last weekend, and a public memorial will be scheduled at a future date.

Garland Bennett
Former Madras resident Garland Wells Bennett died June 7, 2003, at the age of 89.
Mr. Bennett was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Fort Towson, Okla., to parents Vester Filmore and Inez (Carrell) Bennett. The family moved to Hugo, Okla., where he attended and graduated from Hugo High School. He later graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, with a petroleum option. He participated in ROTC while in college and was called into the peace-time army, stationed at Fort Francis E. Warren in Cheyenne, Wyo.
After the military, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Odessa, Texas. He moved to the Panama Canal Zone for three years and worked as a designing engineer for electrical and mechanical equipment for the construction of the third lock of the Panama Canal, which was never built.
Returning to the U.S., he was commissioned into the regular army and served as a motor officer, supervising all motor transport in the unit. In Europe during World War II, he attained the rank of captain, received the American Theater Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three bronze stars and World War II Victory Medal.
Following the war he worked as an engineer for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash., for several years. He retired in 1978 after 32 years as an engineer with Petroleum Corporation (now British Petroleum). He worked at gasoline plants in Corpus Christi, Levelland, Lubbock, and Andrews, Texas, Jennings, La., and Ulysses, Kan. He was the area foreman in charge of two gasoline plants in Ulysses when he retired.
Since boyhood, he had been a member of the United Methodist Church and served on numerous boards and commissions and taught Sunday School classes. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Madras at the time of his death. Service groups he belonged to included the Andrews Lions Club, Ulysses Rotary Club, Georgetown Optimist Club in Texas, he served on the board of directors of the Lone Star, Texas Chamber of Commerce, receiving the Man of the Year Award in 1991, and was a past president of the Lone Star Kiwanis Club.
He was involved with the Boy Scouts in Levelland, Texas, served in the Andrews School Advisory Committee and Andrews City Zoning Board, the Ulysses City Council, and was past president of the Ulysses Chamber of Commerce.
He and his wife, Eva Dean, were members of the President's Council at Southwestern university in Georgetown, Texas for several years.
Survivors include his wife, Eva Dean (Keith) Bennett of Madras; his son and wife, Dan Wells and Anna Bennett of Plano, Texas; daughter and husband, Marcia and Tom Sibley, Ill., of Chattanooga, Tenn.; stepdaughter, Carolyn Sue Taylor of Ulysses, Kan.; stepson and wife, Michael and April Taylor of Madras; grandchildren, Denise Church of Corinth, Texas, Chris Melder of Celina, Texas, Alexis and Benjamin Bennett of Plano, Texas, Jonah Taylor of Portland, and Liberty Taylor of Madras; five great-grandchildren, Bennett, Ashtyn and Kenedy Church of Corinth, Texas, Carl and Clare Melder of Celina, Texas; brother, Marshall Bennett of Bartlesville, Okla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
A memorial service was held in Andrews, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Geraldine Blodgett
Simnasho resident Geraldine Ethel Blodgett died June 3, 2003, at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. She was 75.
Mrs. Blodgett was born April 15, 1928, in Simnasho to parents Moses Hellon and Juanita Wainanwit. She was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and Simnasho and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. She attended Warm Springs Boarding School and Madras Union High School. She was married to Fred Blodgett Sr.
Mrs. Blodgett was a member of the Simnasho Longhouse and Warm Springs Presbyterian Church. She worked as the head cook for the longhouse and was a traditional food gatherer for the ceremonial feasts.
Survivors include her daughters, Mary Davis of Bloomfield, N.M., Laura Switzler of Warm Springs; son, Delbert Blodgett of Warm Springs; sisters-in-law, Madeline Spino and Antoinette Pamperein, both of Warm Springs; brother-in-law, Rafel Queahpama of Warm Springs; cousin, Albert Comedown of Warm Springs; nieces, Monica Yallup of White Swan, Wash., and Alberta Comedown of Warm Springs; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Blodgett Sr.
A dressing ceremony was held June 4, at Simnasho Longhouse, followed by overnight services. Burial was at sunrise June 5, at Red Lake cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Eileen Gilpin
Madras resident Eileen Estel Gilpin died May 25, 2003, at the age of 83.
Mrs. Gilpin was born May 8, 1920, in Held, Ore., to parents Frank Luis and Elnora (Sigler) Ramsey. She attended Bend High School.
On Sept. 21, 1940, she married William Justin Gilpin in Idaho. She was a homemaker whose personal interests included sewing, knitting, painting, and cooking. She loved to visit with friends and loved her family.
Survivors include her son, Michael Gilpin of Bend; daughters, Susan Capps of Bend and Lynne Weisen of Madras; brother Keith Ramsay of Bend; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband William on Feb. 9, 1996; a brother; two sisters; and a grandson.
Memorial services were held May 30, at Niswonger, Reynolds Chapel in Bend. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Parkinson's Foundation, 1015 NW 22nd, Portland, OR 97201.

Sarah Hall
Warm Springs resident Sarah Jane Hall died June 3, 2003, at the age of 79.
Mrs. Hall was born March 28, 1924, in Danville, Ill., to parents William and Nora Adams. She was married to Rufus Hall and worked as a waitress for Deschutes Crossing Restaurant.
She enjoyed her work, her dogs, and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Susie Smith of Warm Springs; sister, June Sears of Madras; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a brother, and a sister.
Funeral services were held June 5, at Hi Lookee Lodge in Warm Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Ethel Hofstetter
Former Madras resident Ethel Hofstetter died May 14, 2003, in San Diego, Calif., at the age of 92. A private family memorial service was held. A full obituary will be run in next week's Pioneer.
