Alice Kostelnik
Former Madras resident Alice Elizabeth (Campbell) Kostelnik, a resident of Aberdeen, Wash., for the last seven years, died May 27, 2003, at the home of her daughter. She was 86.
Mrs. Kostelnik was born Dec 17, 1916, in Madras, to homesteaders John L. and Ella (Oxborro) Campbell. She grew up in Madras and attended the Vanora School, and graduated from Madras Union High school in 1935. She also attended Portland Business College, and earned a Business Degree.
She had been married to John Kostelnik who preceded her in death in 1999.
While in Madras, she was employed as a payroll supervisor for the Warm Springs Plywood Plant. She moved to Gaston, Ore., where she was Dean of Girls at Laurelwood, Academy, for three years, before moving to Portland to work for ICN Medical Lab's as payroll supervisor until her retirement in 1974.
Mrs. Kostelnik was a member of the Tacoma Southside Seventh-day Adventist Church, in Tacoma, Wash. Her interests included cooking, reading, traveling, working with youth, and her family.
Survivors include her two daughters, Linda J. Halvorson, of Polson, Mont., and Sue E. Siolo, of Aberdeen, Wash.; brother, Verne S.Campbell of Madras; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother preceded her in death.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, at the Milo Gard cemetery in Madras.

Bill Major
Madras resident Bill Major died June 5, 2003, at the age of 69.
Mr. Major was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Ft. Towson, Okla., to parents Delbert and Verna (Bulick) Major.
He and his wife Betty were married May 3, 1968 in Old Mexico. He was a farmer and his interests included work, hobby work, and more work.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Major of Madras; son, Earl Duane Major of Oklahoma; daughters, Tarry Pickard of Oklahoma, Carol Adams and Thelma Chandler, both of Baker City; several older children from a previous marriage; three sisters; two brothers; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Funeral services were held June 9, at the First Baptist Church in Madras, officiated by Rev. Richard Burson. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mt. View Hospice, 470 NE A St., Madras, OR 97741. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals of Redmond.

Lucile Ryun
Former Madras resident Mona Lucille "Sally" Ryun died June 8, 2003, at the age of 90.
Mrs. Ryun was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Puyallup, Wash., to parents Ray and Mary (Ferguson) St. Clair and raised in Wilder, Idaho. She graduated from Wilder High School in 1931 and became a sales clerk, then a telephone operator for 7 1/2 years.
She remained single until 1943, when there were just too many dances to attend. In 1943 she married Arthur Warren "Pat" Ryun in San Francisco, Calif., and they returned to Idaho for six years.
Her most valued career goal was to become a mother, and she immediately became the mother of two stepdaughters upon her marriage, a role she readily accepted and relished. Then in 1945, her son David was born, then son Curtis in 1959. In 1960 the Ryuns adopted a daughter, Sandra.
In the spring of 1949 the family moved to a "homestead" in Madras and she began the life of a farmer's wife. She had joined the Rebekah Lodge at Wilder, Idaho, and later transferred to the Juniper Rebekah Lodge No. 229 in Madras. A member for over 50 years, she tried to follow the teachings of the lodge in her daily life.
Survivors include her children, David Leon Ryun of Clackamas, Curtis Layne Ryun of Portland, Sandra Kay Henderson of Clackamas, Barbara Main of Vancouver, and Sharon Freidle of Lake Oswego; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Madras at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 12, with internment following at Mt. Jefferson Memorial Park in Madras. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Juniper Rebekah Lodge No. 229, 16 SE D St., Madras, OR 97741.

Gary Anstett
Former area resident Gary F. Anstett died July 24, in Warm Springs under circumstances that are under investigation. He was 53.
Mr. Anstett was born July 1, 1950, in Robinsdale, Minn., to parents Robert and Mildred (Baumgartner) Anstett. He worked for many years at Warm Springs Forest Products Industries. He later traveled in his car and lived all over Oregon, most recently in Milwaukie.
Survivors include his sons, Jason Anstett and Randall Anstett, both of Washougal, Wash., Jess Anstett of Madras; sisters, Mary Rife and Betty Fisher, both of Riverside, Calif., and Donna Kelsey of Auburn, Calif.; and brother, Joseph Anstett of Madras.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 1, at Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. Inurnment will be at Grey Butte cemetery.

Susan Dougherty
Redmond resident Susan Renee (Overton) Dougherty died July 17, 2003, at the age of 43.
She was born in Baker City on July 14, 1960, to parents Robert and Donnie (Cole) Overton, and attended Baker City high school.
She worked for the Eltrym Theater in Baker City, then moved to Central Oregon in 1986 and married Mike Dougherty in Bend.
She was a homemaker and mother, was affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, and her interests included ceramics, fishing, camping, and going to yard sales.
Survivors include her daughters, Jessica, Megan and Chelsie Dougherty of Redmond; mother, Donnie Gervais; and sister, Debra Harris, both of Baker City; grandmother, Myrtle Cole of Baker City; her former husband, Mike Dougherty of Crooked River Ranch; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father.
A graveside memorial service was held July 25, at Mt. Hope cemetery in Baker City. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 5331 MacAdam Ave., Suite 340, Portland, OR 97239. Arrangements were under the direction of Autumn Funerals.

Corwin Howtopat
Warm Springs resident Corwin Joseph Howtopat died July 19, 2003, at the age of 44.
Mr. Howtopat was born Oct. 20, 1958, in Redmond to parents Johnnie Howtopat and Carol Craig. He worked as a general laborer. He was a lifetime resident of Warm Springs and an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Survivors include his mother, Carol Craig of Warm Springs; sons, Corwin Howtopat of Canada, Develon Howtopat of Tahola, Wash., Michael and Kendall Bobb of Warm Springs; daughters, Astra Howtopat, Patricia Howtopat, both of Tahola, Wash.; brothers, Samuel Kentura, Oswald Tias and Vernon Tias, all of Warm Springs; sisters, Mariam Tias and Martha Anderson, both of Warm Springs; and one grandchild.
A dressing ceremony was held July 22, at Simnasho Longhouse, and burial was July 23, at sunrise at Simnasho cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Verna Kauffman
Madras resident Verna Mae Kauffman died July 27, 2003, at the age of 96. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, July 31, at Bel-Air Chapel in Madras. A reception will follow immediately afterward at the Madras Elks Lodge. Private inurnment will be in Eureka, Calif. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Mountain View Hospice, in care of Mountain View Hospital.

Ricky Baca Jr.
Ricky Everett Baca Jr., a resident of Warm Springs and Colorado, died Sept. 16, 2003, of unknown causes. He was 13.
Ricky was born Dec. 5, 1989, in Shiprock, N.M., to parents Dellah Davis and Ricky Baca Sr.
Survivors include his parents, who live in Colorado; brother, Jarren Davis of Bloomfield, N.M.; and sister, Danessa Baca of Bloomfield, N.M.
A dressing ceremony was held Sept. 19, at Agency Longhouse, and burial was Sept. 20, at the Red Lake cemetery in Warm Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Mary Mehlenbeck
Mary Frances Mehlenbeck passed away on Sept. 24, 2003 in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the age of 78.
Mrs. Melenbeck was born Jan.13, 1925, in Wheatland, Wyo., and after graduating from college she became a long-time resident of Madras. She was a member of The Methodist Church, The Eastern Star, and the public school system.
She married Clarence W.(Bill) Mehlenbeck, who was a dentist in Madras in 1947. He passed away in Colorado Springs, Colo. in December 2000.
She is survived by a brother Robert and wife Arlene Mattison of California; sister, Anne Speyer; and sons Clarence and Pam W. Mehlenbeck III, daughter-in-law Ren of Silverdale, Wash., C. Wayne and Josette Mehlenbeck of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, Cary W. and Charlene Mehlenbeck of Calhan, Colo.; and daughter, Francine and Gil Arent of Happy Valley, Ore. She was also survived by nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
She was buried next to her husband on Sept. 30, 2003, at Ft. Logan National cemetery in Littleton, Colo.

Verne E. Mobley
Madras resident Verne E. Mobley died Sept. 29, at the age of 91. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 5, at East Cascade Living Center, Building A, with a luncheon to follow. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras. A full obituary will appear in next week's Pioneer.

LaVelle Rice
Former Madras resident LaVelle Fernette (Filey) Rice died Sept. 26, in Portland at the age of 81. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Oct. 3, at Mount Scott Funeral Home, 4205 S.E. 59th Street (Foster Road is the cross street) in Portland. Memorial contributions have been suggested to V.H.L., 1171 Clinton Road, Brookline, Maine, 02445. A full obituary will appear in next week's Pioneer.

Florence Starr
Washington resident Florence Lindy Starr died Sept. 24, 2003, following a car accident. She was 18.
Florence was born Jan. 1, 1985 in Madras to parents Dennis Starr and Ramona Crowe. She was an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Survivors include her mother, Ramona Starr of Warm Springs; brother, Joseph Starr of Warm Springs; and sisters, Lenora Starr of Warm Springs and Rhonda Starr of Portland.
A dressing ceremony was held Sept. 25, at Simnasho Longhouse, and burial was Sept. 26, at the Mouth of the Warm Springs River. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Oswald Tias
Warm Springs resident Oswald Tias died Sept. 18, 2003, following a car accident. He was 18.
Oswald was born May 13, 1985, in Madras to parents Garrett Suppah Sr. and Martha Tias. He attended Madras High School.
Survivors include his mother, Mariam Tias of Warm Springs; sisters, Christian Wolfe and Mary Wolfe, both of Warm Springs; and grandmother, Carol Craig of Warm Springs.
A dressing ceremony was held Sept. 20, at Simnasho Longhouse, and burial was Sept. 22, at Simnasho cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home of Madras.

Wanda Daly
Wanda E. Daly of Redmond died March 24, 2004, at the age of 81.
Mrs. Daly was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Corning, Ark., to parents Elmo and Elisabeth (Byes) Collins. She spent her teenage years in Gilcrest and Crescent, Ore., and married Martin Daly Jr. in 1941 in Reno, Nev. She lived most of her life on a sheep and cattle ranch in Culver.
Her special interests included fishing at Round Butte, and being active in the Lady Elks in Madras, and the garden club in Culver. Her sons are Mike Daly of Redmond, who is a Deschutes County Commissioner, and Pat Daly of Redmond, who owns the Crooked River Dinner Train.
Survivors include her sons, Mike and Pat Daly of Redmond; two half-brothers, Jerry Collins of Los Angeles, Calif., and David Krause of Nyssa, Ore.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Collins; parents, Elmo and Elisabeth Collins; her first husband, Martin "Mick" Daly; and second husband, Orley Gregg of Culver.
Funeral services were held March 29, at Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel in Redmond, followed by graveside service at Pilot Butte cemetery in Bend.
Memorial contributions have been suggested to Hospice of Redmond, Sisters and Grant County in Redmond.
