Ruby Hunt
Ruby Farley Hunt, a Hood River, Oregon resident, died Sept. 9, 2003 at Providence Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. She was 74 years of age.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Recitation of the Rosary will be on Sept. 14 at 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Ruby was born March 1, 1929 in Wallowa, Ore., to Clifford and Celia (Moore) Parker. She grew up in a small mill town of Pondosa, Ore. She traveled 40 miles of mountain roads to school graduating from Union High School. After graduation she married , had two children then attended Portland School of Beauty. She was a lifelong hairdresser though she retired in 1973.
In 1958 she married Joe Farley. After Joe adopted David and Valerie, Tricia arrived and their family was complete. Upon Joe’s death in 1972, Ruby raised Tricia and involved herself in many civic and volunteer activities. She loved to help people and wanted to make our community and world a better place.
Two families were united in 1979 with Ruby’s marriage to Jack Hunt. They had 19 great years together traveling the world until Jack’s death in 1998. The last years saw Ruby continue her volunteer activities, helping her family daily and enjoying being a grandmother. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The organizations Ruby has been involved with include the American Legion Auxiliary, Odell Garden Club, St. Mary’s Altar Society, all of which she was a past president.
She was a charter member and past president of the Hood River Emblem Club. For twenty years she has been a Hospice of the Gorge volunteer. Ruby has volunteered for over thirty years with the Red Cross Blood Banks. Recently Ruby has been a weekly S.M.A.R.T. reading volunteer at Mid Valley Elementary School. She spent many days at the Hood River Care Center as a volunteer hairdresser for the patients there along with helping at the Veteran’s Home in The Dalles. Even in death she continued to give with the donation of her corneas to the Lion’s Eye Bank. Even though she was helping all these worthwhile organizations, she always had time for her children, friends and grandsons and Joe’s ballgames, which she loved to attend.
Ruby is survived by her son and daughter in law, David and Vickie Farley of The Dalles, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Patricia and Butch Gehrig of Odell, Ore. and daughter Valerie. Two stepsons and daughters in law, Steve and Marsha Hunt of The Dalles, and Warren and Rhonda Hunt of Newberg, Ore., also survive, along with 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery.

John Krzeszak
John E. Krzeszak, 67, a resident of The Dalles, died at Mid Columbia Medical Center on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003.
He was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Burgetteston, Pa., to Stephanie and Frank Krzeszak. When he was nine years old, his coal miner father was drafted and the family moved to Detroit, Mich., to help out with the war effort. He was a graduate of Wilbur Wright High School in Detroit.
At age 19, John went with a friend to a dance held at the Providence Hospital School of Nursing, where he met 17-year-old nursing student Nancy Brennan. John and Nancy married three years later in 1958, after Nancy graduated from nursing school. John enrolled in Wayne State University where he trained to be an accounts payable clerk.
In 1960, encouraged by his wife to pursue his love of art, the couple moved to Los Angeles, where John received his Bachelor of Professional Arts from the Art Center of Los Angles. After graduation, the couple moved to San Bernardino where John began a job with aerospace illustrating re-entry space vehicles for the government.
In 1965, John and Nancy moved back to Detroit, where their first son, John, was born and son, Michael was adopted two years later. John took a job as Art Director with advertising firm Darcy, McManus & Masius, where he was put in charge of ad campaigns for Anheiuser Busch, Sealy, Whirlpool, GM and Mr. Goodwrench.
In 1978, while on a trip to Oregon, John and Nancy fell in love with the state and decided that The Dalles was the place they wanted to raise their teenage sons. John took a job with the Forest Service at Dufur, where he worked in recreation until he retired in 1998.
During John’s full life, he was a hospital corpsman in the Navy, was very active with his family in the Community Meals Program, contributed his time and art to the Columbia Art Gallery in Hood River, served on the board of the Hood River Friends of the Library, was active in the Wahtonka High School booster club and served as president of the Rowena Dell Homeowners Association. He also taught many art classes through Columbia Gorge Community College.
John was the 10th heart transplant patient at Oregon Health Sciences University and a 17-year heart transplant survivor.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy, son, John F. Krzeszak of Parkdale and his two children, Tiffany and Katie Ann; son, Michael John of Portland and his partner, Donald Finch; his brothers, Danny and Gerald Krzeszak, and sisters, Sandy Imby, Debbie Falta and Connie Mott, all of Michigan.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of John’s life at the family home at 1 p.m. on Sept. 21.
Private cremation was held at The Dalles Win-quatt Crematory with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to Hood River Friends of the Library, The Dalles Community Meals or Columbia Art Gallery.

Lorraine Yerges
Lorraine Ethelda Holmes Yerges, a resident of Mosier, died at her home on Friday, Sept. 5, 2003.
She was born Oct. 3, 1915, in McCoy, Ore. one of three children to Ralph Malcolm and Mary Ethel (MacDowell) Holmes. She grew up in McCoy and Portland, Ore., and in Sacramento, Calif., where she graduated from Sacramento High School in January of 1934.
She met her husband, Clarence, at a dance and married him on May 2, 1940, in Carson City, Nev. They had four children: Cleone “Lonnie”, August, Helen and David.
Lorraine was very active in her children’s lives. When they were growing up, she played softball, rode bikes and played many inside and outside games with them. She was a 4-H leader for twenty years, teaching sewing and cooking. She was a Cub Scout leader for several years.
She has crocheted afghans for her children and grandchildren for graduation gifts. The following year, she gave them a pillow to match. She has also crocheted clothes for many stuffed animals and made pencil and tablet holders for many of her family and friends.
Lorraine enjoyed camping and traveling. She and Clarence belonged to Thousand Trails and spent many happy hours there. They celebrated their 45th anniversary by taking a boat trip to Alaska and Canada and then drove their camper back home.
Earlier this year, Lorraine took a trip to Wisconsin with Lonnie to renew her acquaintance with Clarence’s side of the family. This was her first trip back in 20 years.
During the last years, Lorraine has enjoyed writing letters, telephoning her friends, receiving calls and letters, crocheting, shopping, visiting her friends, and swimming.
She was a Christian and loved the Lord. She enjoyed going to church almost every Sunday at either Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hood River or Mosier Christian Church.
She is survived by her children, Cleone “Lonnie” Thorpe, Lincoln, Calif.; August “Augie” Yerges, Grants Pass, Ore.; Helen Huskey and her husband, Wayne, Mosier, and David Yerges and his wife, Trish, Summerville, Ore.; also Mae White of West Sacramento who adopted Clarence and Lorraine as her parents.
Lorraine is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; her brother, Ralph Malcolm Holmes, Sacramento, Calif., and nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will greatly miss her.
Lorraine’s husband, Clarence, preceded her in death on Feb. 26, 2000, and her sister, Cleone Roselda Holmes Baker, also preceded her in death.
Memorial services were Sept. 10, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hood River with Pastors Jerrold Collins and Brad Jeffries officiating.
Private cremation was held at Win-quatt Crematory in The Dalles with Spencer, Libby & Powell Funeral Home in care of arrangements.
Remembrances may be made to Mosier Christian Church elevator fund, Good Shepherd Lutheran Home or Mosier School.

Timothy Tash
Timothy Dale Tash, born March 19, 1964 in Los Angeles, Calif., passed away Sept. 10, 2003, in Portland, Ore., following a long battle with diabetes.
A memorial service will be Monday, Sept. 15, 2 p.m., at Hood River Church of Christ.
Tim was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. Each day was a challenge, yet he accepted his heavy burden with courage and a spirit of optimism. Tim was creative; an artist and a poet. He will be remembered by his family and friends with so much love and admiration.
Survivors include his former wife, Jennifer Tash; two sons, James and Michael Tash; a daughter, Jessica Tash; his parents, Robert and Sandra Pelletier of Hood River; brothers, James Tash (Melanie), and William Tash (Marie); sisters Melinda Steiger, Heather Contreras, and Amber Lane (Jeremy); and aunt, Susan Fighera. Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews who are grateful for the years he was a part of their lives. He was preceded in death by his natural father, James Tash.

Donald Parker
Donald L. Parker, 83, departed this life at his home in Cottonwood, Ariz., Nov. 9, 2003.
Services will be held at the Anderson Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Dr., Hood River, Ore., 97031 on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m.
Donald was the only child of Frank Lemuel and Addie McGarvin Parker, born on Oct. 27, 1920, at Hood River. He resided at Parkdale, Ore., through elementary school into high school. When he was 17, the family moved due to his mother’s health to Nyssa, Ore., where he graduated from high school.
On Nov. 15, 1941, he married Naomi Lorenson at Caldwell, Idaho. They were blessed with five children. Don was a very devoted husband and father. He enjoyed photography, and made numerous videos for travel experiences during retirement years traveling extensively in their motorhome. He retired as Traffic and Transportation Analyst from Lockheed Missiles & Space, now Lockheed Martin, in Sunnyvale, Calif., and moved to the Verde Valley in 1986.
He leaves behind Naomi, his devoted wife of 62 years, and two daughters, Donnamae Thomas (and her husband Marvin) of West Virginia, and Linda Asher of New Mexico; three sons, Ronald (and his wife Ruby) Parker of California, Edwin (and his wife Carol) Parker of Texas, and Wesley (and his wife Cathy) of Texas, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; many cousins and longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, a beloved grandson Darren Donald Parker, and son-in-law, Dr. Robert Asher.
Vault entombment will be at Idlewild cemetery.

Kirk Massey
Kirk John Massey, a Cascade Locks, Ore., resident, died Nov. 8, 2003, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. He was 52 years of age.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Willamette National cemetery followed by a Memorial service at 3 p.m. at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Stevenson, Wash.
Kirk Massey was born Aug. 20, 1951, in Salina, Kan., to James and Virginia (Koperski) Massey. He graduated from Cascade Locks High School and then attended Mt. Hood Community College. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea in the early 1970s.
Kirk had worked as a truck driver and was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was also a bass guitarist, playing in local bands for over 20 years. Kirk was an avid football and Oakland Raiders fan and also enjoyed restoring cars, Harley Davidson motorcyles, trips to Sturgis, S.D., and drawing cartoons.
He is survived by his mother, Virginia Koperski, and his father, James Massey, and his son, Tyson Massey, and daughter, Aricia Rae Massey. He is also survived by his brothers Douglas and Brett Massey, sisters Jeanne, Lorraine and Jennifer Massey and Cynthia terHurst; two aunts Patricia McNutt and Betty Becker and longtime companion Jeanne Brown. Three nieces, two nephews and four cousins also survive.

Nina Black
Nina Stevens Black passed away at her home in White Salmon, Wash., on Nov. 7, 2003. She was 90 years of age.
Nina was born May 18, 1913, in Mt. Carmel, Utah, to Hyrum Wallace Stevens and Mabel Spencer Stevens; the middle child in a family of 11. She had six brothers and four sisters. Nina was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served valiantly in any assignment that she was given. She loved to teach the children in Primary and always had a special spot in her heart for them and an abiding concern for their welfare. There are still many who are grown with children and grandchildren of their own who still call her “Mom.”
Nina married Claude Black on April 15, 1932, in the LDS St. George Temple. Nina loved to garden and always had beautiful flowers around her home. She would often be found tending her garden even when she had difficulty getting around. Another of her interests was creating wonderful quilts on her old Singer treadle sewing machine, which she was still doing in her 90th year.
She made quilts for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they came along. Nina loved the out-of-doors and spent many days with her family and friends camping at her favorite camping spot at the old sheep camp on the Lewis River. Many memories were made there that will stay in the family’s lives forever.
Nina is survived by three sons, Dennis of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Roger of Trout Lake, Wash., and Boyce of White Salmon; two daughters, Nora Kyte and Darlisa Black, both of White Salmon; a brother, Leo Stevens, of Utah; 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren, who brought much joy and happiness to her throughout her life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude, in 1996, and a son, Sheldon, in 1956.
A funeral service will be held Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Christ of Latter-Day Saints in White Salmon, with interment following at the White Salmon cemetery. A visitation was held Nov. 11 at Gardner Funeral Home.

Vera Braito
Hood River resident Vera Elizabeth Braito died Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003, at her home. She was 89 years of age.
Arrangements are pending at Anderson’s Tribute Center, 541-386-1000.

Edith J. Hertel
Edith J. Hertel died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, in Albany, Ore., just a few weeks shy of her 92nd birthday.
A service to remember and honor Edith will be held at Cascade Locks Community Church beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30. Interment will follow the church services at the Cascade Locks cemetery. A light luncheon will be made available at the Cascade Locks Community Church following the interment.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29, at Anderson’s Tribute Center from 1 to 4 p.m.
Mrs. Hertel spent her childhood and early adulthood in South Dakota before moving east to Baltimore, Md., to begin a long career working for the U.S. government as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. Mrs. Hertel was married approximately 14 years before divorcing in 1950 and moving to Cascade Locks with her two sons.
She loved living in Cascade Locks and the many friends and activities that she had in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Gardening was a passion of hers and she was a great lover of animals. Cats were constant companions of hers throughout her lifetime. She was an active member of the Cascade Locks Community Church where she served as treasurer until failing health caused her to relinquish this duty. Mrs. Hertel also served as a volunteer at the Historic Museum at Cascade Locks for a number of years.
A paralyzing stroke in July 2001 resulted in the need for her to move from her home at Cascade Locks to the Mennonite Village in Albany, Ore., where she received excellent, loving and attentive care for the last 14 months of her life.
Mrs. Hertel in survived by her two sons, W. John Hertel and his wife Rosemary who reside in Salem, Ore., and Bradley R. Hertel and his wife Marsha who reside in Blacksburg, Va.; four grandchildren, Jeff Hertel, Jill Abrams, Mark Hertel, and Scott Hertel; and four great grandchildren, Cameron and Cooper Abrams and Gus and Nicole Hertel.
