Leonard Wonsyld
Graveside services with vault interment for Leonard Wonsyld were held Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at Pine Grove cemetery.
Leonard passed away in his home, surrounded by his friends and family, Sept. 25. He was a fighter until the very end, refusing to give up, until the choice was no longer his.
Leonard was born March 18, 1924, in Yacolt, Wash., to Tony and Lois (Wilson) Wonsyld. He grew up among the logging camps of the Pacific Northwest, where his father worked as a logger. Many of his childhood days were also spent with his treasured grandparents, Jens and Kirstine Wonsyld, Danish immigrants to the U.S. who settled on a farm in Yacolt.
Leonard joined the Navy at age 17 on May 19, 1943, in Portland Ore. He was discharged Oct. 29, 1943, with an honorable medical discharge due to a back injury. He then spent time in the Merchant Marines, starting service Oct. 26, 1945, and ending service Feb. 13, 1946, eventually working in the shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., where he met his wife of 57 years.
Leonard married Mary Reynolds-Barns on May 15, 1946, in Vancouver, where they also celebrated the birth of their first daughter. They eventually moved to the community of Dee at the old Dee Mill where they lived as they welcomed their second and third daughters into the world. They then moved up onto the Flat where they raised their family and Leonard worked in the logging industry, eventually driving his own log truck.
In 1976 Leonard suffered a stroke and retired early, but never stopped working. He could be found in his shop creating jewelry from the rocks he collected on trips to Arizona, in his garden tending his crop, or keeping his lawn manicured to perfection.
Leonard enjoyed many hobbies including camping, fishing and hunting. He enjoyed anything that would take him into the forests in which he had spent so many hours since childhood.
Surviving Leonard are: wife, Mary, of Hood River; children: Rae and Gary Whiting, Beaverton, Ore.; Kary and Dan Betz, Hood River; Beverly and Frank Garner, Troutdale, Ore. Also surviving are grandchildren: Rachell and Chad Lindley, Jeffrey Whiting, Seth and Kimberly Garner, Angela Gray, Russ Gray, and Jonny Betz.
He is also survived by his great-grandchildren; Alexa Lindley, Savannah Garner, Paige Lindley, Ryan Gray, and Chloe Garner, and brother Ralph and Patricia Wonsyld of Hood River, sister Louanna and Melvin Sparks of Parkdale, brother Riley 'Butch' Moore of Washington, sister-in-law Jane and Bud Arrowsmith of Tennessee, sister-in-law June and Chuck Anderson of Washington, and brother-in-law Guy and Kathy Barnes of California.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Tony Wonsyld and Lois Babcock, stepfather Riley Moore, father and mother-in-law Guy and Bonnie Barnes, cousin Donald Wonsyld and beloved friends Harold and Peggy Brower.
He was loved and respected by many, and will be greatly missed; yet his spirit and strength will live on forever in all that have known him.
