Benigno Lopez
Benigno C. Lopez, a Hood River resident, died Apr. 12, 2003. He was 65 years of age.
Benigno was born May 9, 1937, in Coacoman, Michoacan, Mexico. In 1955, he and Vicenta Lopez were married in Mexico. He worked in production for Kernny Western Power until his retirement in 2000. He enjoyed playing the violin and was a musician at heart.
Benigno is survived by his children, Socorro Verduzco, Francisco Lopez, Antonia Romero, Rafael Lopez, Maria Lopez and Jaime Lopez, all of Hood River, Juana Sandoval of Sunnyside, Wash., and Michael Lopez of Miami, Fla.; brothers David, Jesus, Jose and Rafael; sisters Esperanza, Juana and Elvivia; 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Benigno was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Vault interment was at St. Mary's cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Anderson's Tribute Center.

Kenneth Davies
Hood River resident Kenneth M. Davies died Oct. 6, 2003, at Providence Portland Medical Center. He was 82 years of age.
A celebration of life reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003, at 1 p.m. with the dinner starting at 3 p.m. and then a time for shared remembrances beginning at 5 p.m. all at the Hood River Saddle Club, 4384 Belmont Dr. Private family interment was at Pine Grove cemetery. All family and friends are invited. Desserts and side dishes may be brought.
Kenneth was born Sept. 9, 1921, in Newdale, Idaho to Irving and Francis (Watts) Davies. He moved to Portland, Ore., with his family at a young age, where he was raised and educated. Following his education he joined the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Lunga Point Aircraft Carrier during World War II. Shortly after the war ended he was honorably discharged.
Kenneth then moved to Dee, Ore., where he worked for Oregon Lumber Company for 21 years as a mechanic. He then worked as a mechanic for the School District, the aluminum plant in The Dalles and later drove log trucks for various employers in the Hood River Valley. He retired as a mechanic from Hood River County.
Kenneth enjoyed any kind of fishing, deer and elk hunting and doing anything related to the outdoors. He loved to work on his own vehicles and was known to spend lots of time working on his pickup, camper and boat. Many hours were also spent in his small garden tending to his various vegetable plants. He won many ribbons at the Hood River County Fair for his canned salsa and sauerkraut.
Kenneth was proud of his service to his country. Family was also very important to him.
Kenneth is survived by his sons Monte Davies of Battle Ground, Wash., Richard Davies of Arlington, Ore., and Ken Davies of Hood River; loving companion Rita Byrd of Hood River; sister Donna Rust of Nehalem, Ore.; brother Dick Davies of Vancouver, Wash.; grandchildren Lorrie Polley of Glen Ellen, Calif., Rita Calicrate of Aloha, Ore., Eric and Paul Davies of Vancouver, Wash., Jimmy Parks of California, Kenny Davies III of Hood River, and Seth and Ty Davies of Arlington; and great-grandchild Sean Calicrate of Portland.
He was preceded in death by his wife Opal Davies, brothers Oliver, Jesse and Alder Grant Davies, sisters Margaret and Fay and daughter Beverly Doll.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to be made to Hospice of the Gorge c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Mary Plog
Mary E. Plog, a lifelong Hood River resident, died Oct. 8, 2003, at the Hood River Care Center. She was 95 years of age.
Services will be held on Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Hood River Valley Christian Church.
Mary was born Nov. 6, 1907, in Hood River to Chester and Constance (Bradley) Shute. She was raised and educated in the Hood River Valley attending Odell Grade School and graduating from Odell High School. On Jan. 13, 1929, she and Louis Plog were married in Newberg, Ore. They owned and operated an orchard until retirement in 1965. In her early years she attended the Odell Methodist Church. Mary enjoyed sewing, cooking, crocheting, reading and in her later years, watching soap operas on television.
She is survived by her daughters, Louise Perry and her husband, Ted and Evelyn Annala and her husband, Jim; two sisters, Ruth Hague and Rosalin Hanna; five grandchildren, Mary Lou Perry, Thad Perry, Candy Wakamatsu, Denny Perry and Carl Annala.
Eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive. Interment will be at Idlewild cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Gorge or the Hood River Valley Christian Church c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Don Roberts
Hood River resident, Donald L. Roberts died Oct. 7, 2003, while on a trip to Seattle, Wash. He was 72 years of age.
Don was born and raised in Parkdale, graduating in 1950 from Parkdale High School. Shortly after graduation, Don served in the U.S. Marine Corps for three years, stationed mainly in California, at Camp Pendelton. He also served overseas in Japan. Don returned to Parkdale and after a short stay, he moved to Portland where he worked for an electric sign company for the next 20 years. He married Josie Gonzales (Roberts) in 1958.
In 1976, Don accepted a position with an electric sign company in The Dalles.
He and his wife and two boys moved to Hood River with Don commuting to The Dalles and later to Portland for employment in the sign industry.
Don 'officially' opened his own sign business located in Hood River in 1989 called 'Don Roberts Signs.' Much of Don's fine work can be seen in many signs throughout Hood River County. He continued in that business until his death. Don also drove a bus for the Hood River County School District, served a term of three years on the Hood River City Council and was currently a member of the Urban Renewal Committee. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Don is survived by his wife, Josie, and two sons: Paul Roberts, wife Margie and grandsons, Chris and Bradley, and Richard Roberts, wife Patty and grandchildren, Sarah Jo and John. Also surviving are his great-aunt Miriam Roberts.
A Rosary Service will be held on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hood River.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

William Parrish
Hood River resident William 'Bill' Parrish died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Providence Portland Medical Center. He was 69 years of age.
A funeral service will be held Monday, Oct. 20, at 11 a.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. A visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until service time on Monday, Oct. 20.
Bill was born June 17, 1934, to William and Helene (Kindred) Parrish in Joplin, Mo. At the age of two years Bill moved with his family as they traveled west to find better work.
Eventually they settled in Hood River. He was raised and educated in the Hood River Valley and graduated from Wy'East High School.
Following his education Mr. Parrish joined the U.S. Army and served his country in the Korean Conflict.
During the war he was in an accident and broke his back. After healing from his injury Mr. Parrish stayed in the U.S. Army and started his career as an officer.
While stationed in Germany he met Heidi Herty whom he later married in April of 1961 in Stuttgart, Germany. He then served his country in the Vietnam War. Following the war Bill returned to San Francisco, Calif., where he was stationed for four years and eventually retired from the military in Oakland, Calif.
Following his retirement Bill moved his family back to Hood River in 1974 to be closer to family. Once in Hood River Bill started work with the school district as a janitor. He served with the School District for 10 years until health reasons forced him to retire.
In his spare time Mr. Parrish enjoyed fishing, walking, hiking, reading books and studying history. Bill was a member of the VFW.
Mr. Parrish is survived by his wife Heidi Parrish of Hood River, son Bill Parrish of Hood River, daughter Linda Kay Parrish of Ft. Irwin, Calif., grandson Andreas Hertz of Ft. Irwin, Calif., and numerous cousins.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans c/o Anderson's Tribute Center 1410 Belmont Hood River, OR 97031.

Donald Roberts
Services for Donald Roberts were held last Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Leonard Blumenthal
Leonard 'Len' Blumenthal, a 67-year Parkdale resident, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at the age of 80. He was born in Brewster, Neb., on April 28, 1923, to Otto and Rosa Blumenthal. He was one of five children who moved to Mission, S.D., with their parents during the Great Depression. Looking for better job opportunities brought the family to the Parkdale area in 1933.
Leonard attended primary school in Parkdale and graduated from Parkdale High School in 1936. He excelled in mathematics. Leonard married Beverly Cox, a native of the Hood River Valley, on April 14, 1945. Leonard worked for more than 35 years in the woods for Parkdale Lumber Company as a cat skinner, high climber and truck driver. Before he retired in 1988 he spent 10 years as a maintenance worker for the Oregon Department of Transportation.
He had many hobbies and interests. He was a patron Eagle of the Hood River F.O. Eagles. He also belonged to the Upper Valley Lions Club and the Parkdale Grange. For many years Leonard was a volunteer for the Parkdale Fire Department.
In 1971 Leonard and Beverly were charter members of the Chinook Sportsman Association in Chinook, Wash. It is a private fishing camp at Baker Bay on the mouth of the Columbia River. Leonard still holds the record for catching the biggest salmon, a 45-pound chinook.
When he wasn't fishing Leonard liked to play golf. On Nov. 18, 1997, he scored a hole-in-one on the No. 2 hole at the Hood River Golf Course. For many years he bowled for McIsaac's Store in Parkdale and celebrated when he and his teammates won the league championship. He was an avid card player and especially enjoyed rummy and pinochle. He always enjoyed a game of cribbage and after purchasing a computer he spent many pleasurable hours playing video golf and fishing games.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly, of Parkdale. Also surviving is his oldest son, Stanley and wife Charlotte Blumenthal of Oakridge, Ore. One brother and one sister survive Leonard; Earl Blumenthal of Centralia, Wash., and Evah Stoutt of Wilsonville, Ore.
Also surviving are four grandchildren, Rebecca Duda of Beaverton, Jeremy Blumenthal, who is serving in the U.S. Navy and is stationed in Norfolk, Va., Joshua Blumenthal of Norfolk, and Jennifer Yankee of Kelso, Wash. Six great-grandchildren also survive. Preceding him in death were his brother LeRoy in 1943, brother Ray in 1958, son Robert in 1955, and son Danny LeRoy, a park ranger for the State of Oregon who was killed in the line of duty on April 27, 1999.
Funeral arrangements were coordinated by Anderson's Tribute Center and included a viewing for family and friends at Anderson's Tribute Center from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The funeral service is set for 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at the Parkdale Community Church with Rev. Don Gibbs officiating. Burial will be in the Parkdale cemetery.
A reception will be held in the church Fellowship Hall. Memorial contributions can be given in Leonard's memory to the Upper Valley Lions or the Parkdale Grange through Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Leonard Menke
Leonard William 'Lenny' Menke, a Hood River resident, died Jan. 16, 2004, at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. He was 81 years of age. Mass of Christian Burial was held Jan. 20 at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
Lenny was born Feb. 12, 1922, in Goltry, Okla., to Theodore and Mary (Brockman) Menke. He was raised and educated in Oklahoma and had resided in Oklahoma, Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Mexico, Arizona and Texas. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
He loved the country and ranching was his life. He enjoyed running his cattle ranch in Wahkiacus, Wash., hunting, fishing and going to livestock auctions. Leonard was a great man, a wonderful father, a loyal husband and a unique friend. He was a hard worker, dedicated and independent. He always had a great sense of humor, always telling jokes and making everyone smile. He was always there when people needed him, always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be missed by all his family.
He is survived by his wife, Maria Menke; his daughter, Monica Menke and grandchildren Natasha, Ivan, Jennifer and William Menke, all of Hood River; his mother-in-law Maria Elena Franco Orozco of Guadalajara, Mexico and his son-in-law Antonio Ortiz of Hood River.
Arrangements are by Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Lyle Godfrey
Lyle Godfrey, 82, son of Joseph Rueben Godfrey and Jewell Ellison Godfrey Wilkerson was born Dec. 1, 1921 at Concrete, Wash. He died Jan. 8, 2004, at home in Houston, Missouri.
He graduated from high school in Concrete, Wash. He served military duty in World War II for the Army Air Force for four years.
He married Evelyn Garrett of Woodland, Wash., on Sept. 27, 1947. They were married for 56 years. To this union were born five children, one son and four daughters. He lived for 50 years in N. Bonneville, Wash. While they lived in Washington he was a logger. He loved the outdoors and the mountains. In 1976 he moved to Houston, Mo., where he built his own home and did carpentry work for several years for many people.
In 1948 he was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses and for over 50 years he has helped many people come to know his God, Jehovah. He was an ordained minister and elder in the Licking, Mo., congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He helped in the construction of many Kingdom Halls of Jehovah's Witnesses in several states.
He loved folk music and his wife singing love songs to him. His five children had deep love and respect for their father. They shared many happy times together, hiking in the mountains, camping, outdoor activities and games. He liked gardening, watching things grow, and he especially loved his blueberry patch.
He taught his children love and respect for God's word, the Bible. He will be deeply missed by all that knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, four brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, of Houston, Mo., and his five children, son Bruce Godfrey of Manhattan, Kan., daughter Shirley Edelman of Beloit, Kan., daughter Ruth Lee of San Leandro, Calif., daughter Alice Boyd of Houston, Mo., daughter Sarah Stone of Oakland, Calif., two sisters Eulalie Fry of Lyman, Wash., and Julia Lewis of Woodland, Wash., his 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His granddaughter Alethia Larson lives in Odell and granddaughter Rachel Webb lives in The Dalles. A niece, Joyce Cannon, lives in Hood River.

Shirley Jasperson
Shirley Gretchen Jasperson, 85, a resident of Lyle, Wash., died at a local care facility in The Dalles on Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. She was born Oct. 16, 1918, in Albert Lea, Minn., the second of four children to Stacey and Myrtle Matilda (Melback) Krominga. She was raised in Albert Lea and graduated from Albert Lea High School.
She married Carl Christian Jasperson on Aug. 27, 1938, in The Little Brown Church in The Vale in Iowa. They traveled with his construction work and during World War II, lived in Bremerton, Wash., where he worked in the shipyards. After the war, they traveled the west, coming to Dallesport, Wash. in 1953.
In 1967, they built their home overlooking the Columbia River in Lyle, Wash. Shirley was a homemaker and worked at the Dallesport Elementary School in the cafeteria in the early 1960s, and for The Dalles Chronicle a proofreader for 10 years in the 1960s and 1970s.
Shirley was a member of Lyle United Methodist Church and Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority. She was known for her easy-going personality and ready smile. According to her family and friends, Shirley was the best cookie-maker in the state. Invitation to a potluck was a request to bring her cookies. She began tolepainting in her seventies, her husband built rocking horses, and Shirley showed her skill at painting them. She leaves behind a family very proud of the feminine and ladylike demeanor she presented at all times.
She is survived by three children, Jay and his wife, Karon Jasperson; Jacquelyn and her husband, Keith Johnson, all of Lyle, and Jeanne and her husband, Michael Agostinelli, Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren, Kevin, Michele, Kelly, Jennifer and Nicholas; three great-grandchildren, Kristine, Brady and Carlee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1997, infant twin sons and three brothers, Herman, Dale and Richard.
Viewing visitation will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Tuesday, Jan. 20, from to 2 to 7 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. with Rev. William Scholl officiating. Interment will follow at Balch cemetery in Lyle. Spencer, Libby and Powell Funeral Home are in care of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle Street, The Dalles, OR 97058.
