Margie Hakala
Margie 'Lorene' Hakala passed away Jan. 2, 2004, at Brookside Manor in Hood River, Ore.
She was the eldest and only girl of five children born to Walter B. and Tempe (Shelby) Funkhouser. She was born on June 20, 1917 in Comanche, Okla., where she was raised on her grandparents' homestead and attended school there through the ninth grade. She always looked forward to those Saturday nights with neighbors and their country music. She could really play the piano which she learned by ear and had a beautiful voice and could even yodel.
She married William 'Bill' Hakala Feb 7, 1935. The farming she didn't mind, but she absolutely hated picking cotton. A son, Billy Gene, and daughter, Barbara Ann, were born to them on the farm.
In 1944 they moved to Los Angeles and settled on Vermont Street and worked in the shipyards. When the war was over, they made a trip to Parkdale to visit her brother and his family who were working for John Cooper Orchards.
Her brother returned to Oklahoma and they stayed. They had another son, Michael. They made a brief move back to Home Gardens and Corona, Calif., where she managed a motel. Parkdale kept calling them and they moved back to spend the rest of their lives. Then another daughter, Bonnie was born.
Lorene was definitely a homebody and a hard worker. They moved to their own 20-acre farm in 1965 which she loved. (Finally a place of her own).
She worked in their strawberry fields until they went to all cattle. She had a name for all the cows and would change sprinklers and clean barns and put up hay as good as anyone. She also worked seasonally many years for Pooley and Diamond Fruit. She doted on her husband of almost 65 years until he passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.
She was preceded in death by her husband, brothers Junior, Byron and Gene Austin.
She is survived by sons Bill Hakala of LaPine, Ore., Mike Hakala and his wife, Leanna, of Gresham, Ore., and daughters, Barb Hausinger and her husband, Hal, of Parkdale, and Bonnie Rush of Modesto, Calif.
She is also survived by eight grandsons, seven great-grandchildren and brother Bobby of Comanche, Okla.
Her favorite color was red and her favorite saying was 'Where there's a will, there's a way.' She taught that and lived it.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Parkdale Fire Department, c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.
