Celia Dexter
Parkdale resident Celia Maxine Dexter died at her home Friday, Feb. 6, 2004, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 78 years of age.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, Feb. 10, at Anderson's Tribute Center. Interment was at the Upper Valley cemetery.
Celia Maxine was born Jan. 19, 1926, to Issac and Ethel (Roberts) Parker in Tomah, Wisc. She spent her childhood in Wisconsin. On Sept. 23, 1944, she married Clifford Dexter in Black River Falls, Wisc. They moved to Hood River in 1965.
She was a member of the Parkdale Baptist Church. Maxine worked as a caregiver from 1983 until 1996. She also taught Sunday school for many years and loved to spend time with children. Recently due to her health she needed to be closer to family, so she moved next door to Ben and Rita Hendershot.
She is survived by her sons Sheldon Dexter of Parkdale, David Dexter of La Jara, Colo., Daniel Dexter of Portland, Ore., and Timothy Dexter of Tomah, Wisc.; daughters Sharon Drinkwine of Tomah, Wisc., Karen Wilson of The Dalles, Jeanie Dexter-Krieger of Hood River, Rita Hendershot of Parkdale, Sarah Weaver of Portland, Janie Mauzey of Hood River, and Ruth Smith of Hood River; brothers Arnold Parker of Lebanon, Ore., and Darrell Parker of Wilton, Wisc.; 27 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford, son Darrell, daughter Shelby, brother Max, sister Eva and grandchildren, Benji and Tammy.

Lillian Bell
Lillian Bell, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on her birthday, Jan. 31, 2004, from an injury sustained in a fall at her home in Wheeler, Ore. She was 89 years of age.
Lillian was born on Jan. 31, 1915, in Granger, Wash., to Luke and Inez Nichols. Raised in the White Salmon area, she married Lloyd A. Bell on Oct. 30, 1937.
Lloyd's work as a tugboat skipper and later as a Columbia River Pilot took them to Everett, Wash., and then to Portland. In 1975, they retired to Nehalem Bay on the Oregon Coast where Lloyd was born, and lived in Wheeler for the remainder of their lives. She lost Lloyd in 2000 after 63 years together.
Lillian's hobbies included sailing around Nehalem Bay on the family steamboat, 'Captain Bell, ' as well as gardening and traveling. She was active in the Nehalem Bay Garden Club and was a volunteer for the Chamber of Commerce.
Her cheerful optimism, outgoing personality, generosity and beaming smile were cherished by her many friends and will be long remembered by those who survive her. Though she is gone and will be greatly missed, she will always remain in their hearts and they are grateful for the life she led and the life she radiated to others.
Those who mourn her passing but cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, David and Janet Bell of West Linn, Ore., and her daughter, Leanna Pruitt of Beaverton, Ore.
She is also survived by her twin sister, Louise Cook of White Salmon, Wash., her brothers, Dean Nichols of Winchester, Ore., and Marion 'Nick' Nichols of Vancouver, Wash., and her sister-in-law, Harriet Kallstrom of Tigard, Ore. Lillian had four grandchildren: Lara Dewey, Leslie Alexander, Luke Pruitt and Dean Pruitt; and seven great-grandchildren: Jadyn Dewey, Ashtin and Paige Alexander, and Conner, Hunter, Riley and Miles Pruitt.
Her brother, Darrell Nichols of Hood River, preceded her in death. A memorial service and potluck will be held on Feb. 14, at 3 p.m. at Nehalem Bay United Methodist Church in Nehalem, Ore. The family extends an invitation to all of Lillian's friends and acquaintances to attend and share stories of their experiences with this extraordinary lady. Remembrances in lieu of flowers may go to the Nehalem Bay Garden Club.

David Swyers
Hood River resident David W. Swyers died at his home on Feb. 9. He was 51 years of age. Services are pending at Anderson's Tribute Center, 386-1000.

Ellery Kimber
William Ellery Kimber passed away of natural causes on Feb. 2, 2004, at the Hood River Care Center. He was 93 years of age.
Ellery was born at home in Richmond, R.I. on June 21, 1910, the youngest of four children of William Francis and Lena Mabel Kimber. After completing course work at the local industrial high school Ellery trained as an orchardist while working at Rhode Island State College's Experiment Station.
One of his fondest memories of the time was having a 500-gallon vat of apple cider turn hard rather than into vinegar. He was active in the Boy Scouts in his youth and later as an adult leader. Ellery was also a volunteer fireman into his mid-fifties. In September of 1934 Ellery married Ellen Hunt. Their honeymoon began in a huge thunder and lightning storm and forever after their special song was Stormy Weather. They had two children: a daughter, Nancy, who died in 1944, and a son, William, Jr.
In 1944 Ellery decided it was time to put his experience to the test and he applied to fruit-growing operations across the country and was hired by the orchards in White Salmon, Wash. After one year he took the position of foreman on the Euwer Ranch south of Parkdale where he remained until 1960. In 1960 he and Ellen moved to their cozy home on the Hood River close to Tucker Bridge, where they spent the next forty years. While Ellen worked as Hood River Librarian Ellery became the 'head bridge troll' on the Hood River Interstate Bridge, taking tolls until his retirement in 1975.
Throughout his life Ellery enjoyed fishing and gardening. His gardens, both vegetable and flower, were much admired. In later years he and Ellen enjoyed traveling in the United States, to Hawaii and on several cruises.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen, their son Bill of Tacoma, Wash., and grandson Eliot and wife, Julie Woods, of Austin, Texas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hood River Library Foundation, 502 State Street, Hood River, OR 97031.

Barbara Powell
Barbara E. Powell, a Hood River resident, died Feb. 29, 2004, at her residence. She was 69 years of age.
Services will be held on Friday, March 5 at 10 a.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. Barbara was born Nov. 21, 1934 in New Lexington, Ohio to George and Golda (Stimmel) Palmer. In 1952, she and Gordon Powell were married in Astoria, Ore. They moved to Hood River in 1972. She worked as a secretary for seventeen years for Sherwood Insurance and Scotts Insurance. She began working at Wal-Mart in 1993. She was also a volunteer at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
Barbara's favorite thing in life was raising her daughters and loving her grandkids. She enjoyed square dancing and danced with the Wy'east Whirlers for many years.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Gordon Powell; daughters Kimberly Benedict and her husband, Tim, and Kerry Blake and her husband, Rod, and grandchildren Michelle and Benjamin Blake and Jessie Benedict and sister Gladys Castle all of Hood River.
She is also survived by sister Karen Schmitt of Tillamook, Ore.; brothers Bob Palmer of Hood River; Eugene Palmer of Stowe, Ohio and Gary Palmer of Doylestown, Ohio. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Her brother, Harold Palmer, preceded her in death in 1983.
Inurnment will be at St. Mary's Catholic cemetery.

Hazel Faulkender
A memorial gathering for Hazel Faulkender will be Saturday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at Parkdale Community Center.

Gary Cate
Gary B. Cate, a Parkdale, resident, died Feb. 26, 2004 at Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital. He was 66 years of age. Services will be held on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at 10 a.m. at Mt. View cemetery.
Gary was born Sept. 16, 1937, in Hood River, to Beala and Lillian (Sagers) Cate. He was raised and educated in Hood River, graduating from Wy'east High School. Following high school he served in the National Guard for six years. He worked as a mechanic for Diamond Fruit Company and then worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation. Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, panning for gold and in his younger days, car racing. He was a member of the Gold Prospectors of America and was a former member of the Hood River Elks.
His brother, Jim Cate of Hood River; sister Joan Miller of Silverton, Oregon and five nephews, Monte, Tony, David, John and Allen Miller, all of Gervais, Ore., survive him. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or Hospice of the Gorge, c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont, Hood River, OR 97031.

Lorna Nash
Lorna Riggs Nash died in her Salem, Ore., home on Feb. 25, 2004. She was 72 years of age.
Lorna was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Salem to Earle H. and Verna M. Riggs. She began her teaching career at Washington School in Salem in 1953, after graduating from Seattle Pacific University, Wash. She married Thomas A. Nash in 1954 and the couple later divorced in 1992. She went on to teach in other areas of Oregon, including Spray, Fossil, Phoenix, Talent, Parkdale, Hood River (May Street School), and Cascade Locks.
Survivors include her sister, Diana Riggs Vaucher, of Salem; brother, Robert Riggs, of Redmond; daughter, Robin Nash Martin, of Half Moon Bay, Calif.; and two granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, David Riggs, all of Salem.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, and private internment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park. Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors, in Salem, handled arrangements.

E. LaVelle Fogel
E. LaVelle Stone Fogel, of Portland, Ore., died Feb. 22, 2004. She was 88 years of age. E. LaVelle Worthington was born Apr. 16, 1915, in Oak Grove, Ore. She later moved to Westport, Ore., where she lived through high school. She attended Monmouth Normal School from age 16-18. She lived and taught at schools in Oak Grove, Garibaldi, Lincoln City, Hood River (Barrett and Frankton), and Clatskanie, and lived in Portland until her death.
In June, 1943, she married Don Stone; he died in December 1968. In 1976 she married R. Clayton Fogel, and he preceded her in death in 1995. LaVelle was a schoolteacher for Columbia County Schools.
LaVelle collected angels, rocks and books, and enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, knitting, crocheting and quilting. She belonged to American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughter, Margie Ann Stone, of Portland; son, Norman Kye Stone, of Odell; sister, Margie Holton, of Lincoln City; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Floyd Dye
Floyd S. Dye of Hood River died on Feb. 28, 2004, due to complications following treatment for heart related problems.
Floyd was born on Nov. 12, 1932, in Antlers, Okla., to Clyde Evans Dye and Effie Jane Potter Dye. The family later moved to Oregon, where he graduated from Jefferson, Ore., High School in 1951. He married Leota Flower on Feb. 23, 1953. After 46 years of marriage she preceded him in death in 1999.
Floyd served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper in the 11th Airborne Division from 1954-1956, and as a member of the Oregon National Guard and the Army Reserve from 1956-1973, attaining the rank of sergeant first class.
A longtime resident of Clatsop County before moving to Hood River in 1974, he worked for 35 years as a meat cutter. He will be remembered for his long-term volunteer work with teenagers, as a leader in churches, as an outstanding athlete in his youth, for his devotion to his friends and family, and as a man of faith in God.
Floyd is survived by his children: Tom Dye of Junction City, Ore., Kathy Zimmerman of Estacada, Ore., Dawn Tellez of Hood River, and David Dye of Hood River, and seven grandchildren.
He is also survived by nine siblings: Mary Barrett, Marvin Dye, Clydine Calverley, Jane Seymour, June Watts, Lou Ellen Pearson, Lois Peterson, Gerald Dye, and Clyde Dye, Jr. A brother, James Dye, preceded him in death. Services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 4, at the First Baptist Church of Hood River, 1889 Belmont Dr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund for Horizon Christian School in Hood River, c/o Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Dr., Hood River, OR 97031.

Lee Blodgett
Lee Allen Blodgett, 71, passed away at his home in Carson, Wash., on March 19, 2004.
He was born in Colfax, Wash., on July 13, 1932, the son of Bernadette (Lee) and Ivan Chester Blodgett.
In 1950, Lee graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon and married Anne Anderson in 1951.
He joined the Coast Guard on Dec. 13, 1951, and was stationed at Garibaldi, Ore. Mr. Blodgett received an honorable discharge in June 14, 1954.
After his military service, Lee and his family lived in the Portland area where he worked for 22 years for Davidson/Sunbeam Bakery as a driver. When the company was purchased by Franz bakery, Mr. Blodgett continued to deliver bread for another 6 years. Lee moved to Carson and bought the IGA, which he operated with his son, Mark, for the past 27 years.
On Jan. 25, 1986, Lee married Shirley Thornes. Mr. Blodgett retired in January of 2002, and he and Shirley would travel in their motor home, heading to Arizona for several weeks during the wintertime. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles and American Legion. Lee was very active in the community, heading up an annual customer appreciation pancake breakfast.
In his younger days, he played ice hockey and fished; later, Lee found great pleasure in golfing, fine dining and his Koi fish pond. Lee Blodgett was an unselfish man and those who knew him knew of his immense generosity. He had a strong presence, loads of charisma, and was a charming, romantic man who will be greatly missed.
Surviving Mr. Blodgett are his wife, Shirley, at home in Carson; children and their spouses David and Karen Blodgett of Warrenton, Ore.; Sue Ann Blodgett of Portland, Dawn and James Henrie of Raymond, Wash.; Mark and Sam Blodgett of Carson, Laura and Scott Spaulding of Madras, Ore; Kathy and Robert Miller of Boise, Idaho; and Kristy Nelson of Carson.
He is also survived by sisters Shirley Goodrich of Vancouver, Wash., and Linda Hotchkins of Gladstone, Ore., 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Blodgett.
A memorial service for Lee Blodgett will be held on Wednesday, March 24 at 3 p.m. at the Rock Creek Center in Stevenson, Wash. Private entombment will take place in Portland. Gardner Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.

Thomas Chandler
Thomas Milford Chandler, 81, a resident of The Dalles, died Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 21, 1922, in Guntersville, Ala., to Hunter and Mary (King) Chandler. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a ship's cook until being discharged from active duty in 1946. He remained in the Naval Reserve until his discharge in 1975.
He married Florence VanRas of Hood River in December of 1945 in Vancouver, Wash. He worked for Pacific Power & Light in several locations from 1951-83 when he retired as a hydroelectric plant operator and dispatcher.
The couple retired to their acreage in Pasco, Wash., returning in 1991 to The Dalles, where they made their home until his death. An active outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, trap shooting, camping, golfing, and traveling, including RV snow-birding to Arizona annually.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge No. 1868 in White Salmon, a 50-year member of the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2126 in The Dalles, and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local No. 125 in Hood River.
In addition to his wife, Florence, of The Dalles, he is survived by his children and their families; son, Donald Chandler of Hood River; daughters Sandra and her husband, Bill Locke, of Husum, Wash.; Vonnie and her husband Jon Carlson of Herrick, Ill.; and former daughter-in-law Joni Chandler of The Dalles.
He is also survived by brothers and sisters-in-law Clay and Beulah Chandler of Kokomo, Ind., Alvin and Edna Chandler of Parkdale, Ore., and Ray and Clara Chandler of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Also surviving are sisters and brothers-in-law Doris and Harold Bradford of Chattanooga and Sarah and James Parton of Tampa, Fla.; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Viv and J.W. and a sister, Clara.
Services in celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, at the First Church of The Nazarene, 13th and Mt. Hood streets in The Dalles, with Pastor Randy Johnson presiding. Another celebration of his life will be at 5 p.m. at Elks Lodge in White Salmon.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church, or to the Tall Elks Therapy Foundation, c/o B.P.O.E. #1868 in White Salmon. Arrangements are by Columbia Cremation & Burial.
