She grew up on farms in Nebraska and Wyoming during the Great Depression years. She graduated from high school in Lingle, Wyo., where she not only lettered in girls' basketball, but her team took the state championship in 1933.
On April 14, 1934, she married her sweetheart, Leland Leroy Mattox, in Gering, Neb. In 1935 due to the Dust Bowl in the Midwest, they moved with their parents and siblings to the Sandy, Ore. area where they lived for more than 30 years and raised their five children.
They spent the next 27 years in Richland, Wash. In 1994, following the deaths of her husband and her son Mike, Anna May moved to Seaview, Wash., to be near her children.
Anna May and Leland (Dutch) worked side by side throughout their lives. Anna May enjoyed being outdoors, camping and gardening. She also enjoyed being a homemaker, baking bread and cinnamon rolls, canning, quilting, and providing for her family.
Anna May was a spirited woman and strong moral character, having been the first convert at the then-new Sandy Baptist Chapel in 1946.
