Paul Wilhelm
Paul Joseph Wilhelm of Hood River (formerly of Great Falls, Mont.) passed away on Oct. 1, 2004, at the age of 82. He was born in Fargo, N.D., Sept. 9, 1922, the oldest of three children including James and Gene, born to Paul Wilhelm, Sr., and Elizabeth Gerger. Paul and his wife Bernice had four children and eight grandchildren: son Robert and Pamela (Robyn and Jordan), daughter Joan and Rick DeDyker (Sean and Seth Conlan), son William and Pat (Nik and Lura) and son Thomas and Kristine (Lars and Erik).
Paul was a product of his environment growing up in North Dakota, a childhood in the Great Depression. From his stories, not enough love in the home, summers as a child sent away to live in the bunkhouse on the aunt's farm. While in high school, he met his only sweetheart, Bernice Marcella Wiench. Paul fought in World War II, married during that time and had their first two children. He was accepted to medical school in San Francisco, but went to dental school at Loyola because he could start a year earlier and needed to care for his family. Paul and Bernice arrived in Great Falls, Mont., in 1952 where he enjoyed a thriving dental practice for over 40 years.
With the war, school, and mom working, he said it was hard to know what it was like to have children so they had two more sons. The children all got older, fed the animals and worked on projects on the farm; Paul never letting go of his roots from his childhood.
Bernice had strokes and went to live in a nursing home, where Paul visited her three times a day and fed her. In the spring of 2000 they moved to Hood River and Paul took care of Bernice in their new home. Every day there was a routine: Change the diaper, use the lift, put her in the wheel chair, exercise her joints, put in the feeding tube, put her in another bed in the living room, hold her hand and talk to her. At night this was all reversed. If someone could sit he would sneak out for a few minutes to the grocery store or church.
Last year Bernice died and Paul grudgingly moved in with the family, not wanting 'to be a bother.' He loved to cook, gradually taking over most of the family meals. His specialties were his delicious pies and tapioca pudding.
Perhaps his greatest joy was caring for his youngest grandchildren, Lars, age 2 and Erik, age 1.
In the year and a half he lived with the family he was everywhere. He picked tons of rock out of the field with a pry bar; he would move dirt all day on the tractor; or he would sit on his knees for hours cutting and drilling holes in steel.
Up to the day before he passed, Paul was extremely active. He wanted to be busy to avoid thinking of Bernice, whom he found it difficult to live without.
He got out of the house every day, driving to store and church by himself. He just got his passport and was planning a cruise to Mexico. The day before entering the hospital he got a library card and checked out a book on Indonesian martial arts. Paul was also known for his quirky sense of humor manifested in jokes, poems and pranks at his son's place of work. He was an accomplished songwriter and organist, entertaining at the Hood River Elks, Hood River Adult Center, and Brookside Manor Alzheimer's Sunshine Club. He wrote many songs, 14 of which were copyrighted. He was an active member of St Mary's Catholic Church, and wrote songs for the choir.
In his last few years, Paul learned how to overcome his childhood and to express his love for his family in deeds, words and action. While Paul achieved so much in his life, he was a gentle caring soul, never seeking to draw attention to himself; always nurturing and caring deeply for others, especially for his family. In this last year he enriched the family's life in immeasurable ways.
