Emmett DeHart
Emmett George DeHart was born the son of Cass and Artha (Johnson) DeHart on Monday, March 31, 1958, in Hood River, Oregon.
Emmett moved from Hood River, Oregon to Portland when he was six years old. He attended local grade schools and graduated from David Douglas High School in 1976, after which he attended Chemeketa Community College for three years.
Emmett lived in Clackamas and in 1997 moved to Eagle Creek for a while before moving back to Portland. Emmett married Barbara Johnson on June 17, 1998, in Estacada, Ore., and was a member of the Church of Christ of Latter Day Saints in Estacada. He was dedicated to being home with Barbara and his family, as well as his dogs he loved.
Emmett drove truck and worked in the food transportation industry. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed gardening, camping, motorcycles and working on his vehicles as well as those of friends that would ask for his help.
On Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006, Emmett George DeHart died at the age of 48 years, six months and 28 days of age.
Surviving and left to honor his life are: his wife Barbara; five sons Cassidy, Andrew and Eric of Portland, Kevin of Washington, Robert Mininger III of Aberdeen, Wash.; three daughters Chelsea DeHart of Salem, Debbie Shope and Shirley Bigsbee; five sisters, Julia Wilson of Creswell, Ore; Nancy Harkness of Portland; Catherine Chausse, Theresa Leard and Emily McIntosh of Newberg; 10 grandchildren; and those who have come to know and appreciate him where he has lived and worked. Alan Solle
Alan Michael Solle, 62, died at his home in Hood River, surrounded by family on Oct. 31, 2006, following a courageous five-year battle with pancreatic cancer. In honor of his wishes, no service will be performed.
Alan is survived by his wife of 18 years, Bobbie (Pickell) Solle, daughter Margaret Salazar and her husband Alex, of Oakland, Calif., daughter Natasha Palandri and her husband Tony, of Portland, Oregon, and new granddaughter Eleanor Palandri. His brother Stewart Solle of Florida, and sister Linda Eisenberg of Arizona also survive Alan.
Born in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1944, Alan moved with his family to Redwood City, Calif. in 1953. Alan graduated from San Carlos High School in 1962 and went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from San Francisco State University before moving to Oregon in 1971.
After receiving his teaching certificate from Oregon Teachers' College in Monmouth, Alan and first wife Barbara moved to Hood River, where he taught Social Studies at Wy'east Junior High until 1974. Though he left the classroom, Alan continued to teach in all he did. He embraced exploration and individuality of thought, and modeled these values every day.
Alan began farming by growing strawberries, and 'Berry City' became an institution in the Valley throughout the late 1970's and early 1980's. Later, Alan was instrumental in introducing innovative varieties of peaches, cherries and Asian and European pears to growers in the region. In more recent years, Alan began devoting much of his considerable energy to the establishment of a vineyard.
Alan was an accomplished carpenter and stained glass artist and was known for his exuberant spirit, as well as a love of golf, politics, and the San Francisco 49ers.
Alan lived completely, embracing opportunities and always seeking out new ideas and experiences. One never had to ask for his opinion, and Alan was always happy to order for you at a restaurant. We will miss his cooking, his generosity, his curiosity, his passion, and most of all, his humor.

Howard Getchell
Charles Howard Getchell, a longtime resident of Hood River, Ore., passed away peacefully April 23, 2007, after a short battle with cancer. He was 96 years and nine months old.
Howard was born July 19, 1910, at the Kansas home of his parents, Charles and Mabel (Doughty) Getchell. He attended school in Bloomington, Neb., which was just across the state line from his Kansas farm home. In high school he was a member of the football team and graduated with his class of 11 in 1927. After graduation Howard worked at doing farm chores and other jobs such as shucking corn and whatever else he could find.
With no job and little money Howard was married on April 24, 1932, to Vivian Ethel Gould of Republican City, Neb. Vivian's father gave him the job of hired hand for $15 a month and a house to live in. The family lived very plainly - no electricity or running water.
Then the dust storms hit and the drought came and there was no money for anyone. So the young couple and three babies started west in June 1936, headed for Hood River in a model A Ford sedan pulling a small trailer containing all of their worldly possessions.
A sister of Vivian's and her family were living in Hood River and from her reports it sounded as if the prospects for work were good. Almost any prospect sounded better than the dust and grasshoppers of Nebraska. They arrived in Hood River June 14, 1936, spending exactly $57.50 to make the trip which seemed like a fortune to them.
The next day after arriving in Hood River, Howard got work in an orchard in Pine Grove. Howard knew nothing of orchard work but he did know how to work. The pay was $50 per month until harvest was over.
During their early years in Hood River, Howard and Vivian became members of the Pine Grove Grange, a group of families that made them feel at home and meant a lot to a young family in a strange land.
Hood River was good to the family through the years. They raised four children, Richard, Ronald, Roger and Judith. Their children had all of the advantages of growing up in a wonderful small town and community. They have many fond memories of family camping trips, fishing expeditions and learning to ski with their dad.
Howard worked in the orchards in the summers and for AGA in the fall until 1942 when he started to work in the Grange Supply. After about a year he left the Grange Supply and became manager of the Columbia Producers Association, then the Mt. Hood Farmers Supply, which eventually merged with the Grange Supply to form the Hood River Supply Association. His specialty was pumps and pump systems and he was very instrumental in irrigating the entire valley.
He retired in 1978 after spending 30 years as manager for Cenex and the Hood River Co-op Supply.
In addition to his work Howard was very active in the community. In the 1950s he served 10 years on the Hood River Port Commission - eight years as chairman of the board. He and Vivian were members of Valley Christian Church, where Vivian was the organist and Howard served as a deacon and elder for many years.
An active member of the Masonic Lodge, he served as Grand Master and other appointments, and was presented with the 'Hiram Award' for outstanding service. Both Howard and Vivian were members of Eastern Star. He was also a Shriner and active in the Elks Lodge.
Howard loved the outdoors; an avid fly fisherman, he enjoyed the many camping trips with family and friends. The family fondly recalls traveling to these campsites and Howard always taking the 'back routes' to get there.
Besides his love for his wife and family, Howard's other love was reading. He would devour the newspaper, and then more often than not he would read a book a week, often focusing on world affairs or religion; but he always had time to mix in a Louis L'Amour story. He had a large library of books for his family to share.
After Howard retired, the couple enjoyed their time living in the valley, travels to a beach home at Ocean Shores, Wash., where they played golf, and other trips both short and long. Sadly, Vivian passed away Oct. 15, 1996, after 64 years of marriage. It was then that Howard moved into Down Manor.
On Sept. 9, 1999, Howard married Edna Barton, also a resident of the Manor. She was a special companion and friend and they had some happy times together until she unfortunately passed away only nine months after their wedding. He continued to live in the Manor where he enjoyed the company of others and his love of reading until moving to an assisted living center in Gresham just three weeks prior to his death.
Howard is survived and will be dearly missed by his children, Richard (and Diane) Getchell of Damascus, Ore., Ronald (and Burnie) Getchell of Damascus, Roger (and Leslie) Getchell of Spokane, Wash., and Judy (and Leonard) Calvin of Bellingham, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Robert Evans, Susan Nelson, Patricia Willis, Brenda Delmarter, Keith Getchell, Linda Lewis, Lisa Kaplan, David Getchell and Karin Munger; 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and Vivian and Edna, Howard was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Janet Getchell, on Feb. 19, 2001, a sister, Helen, and brothers Richard and Lloyd.
A service to honor and celebrate Howard's life will be conducted at Down Manor, 1950 Sterling Place, Hood River, Ore., on Saturday, July 21, at a time to be announced. Pastor David Presley of Valley Christian Church will officiate.
The family suggests that any contributions be made in memory of Howard to our local hospice organization or the Shriners' Hospital in care of Anderson's Tribute Center.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; (541) 386-1000.

Franklin Erickson Jr.
Franklin Erickson Jr., a White Salmon, Wash., resident since 1997, died Wednesday May 2, 2007, at the age of 80. A private family interment will be held at the Idlewild cemetery, 980 Tucker Road, Hood River, Ore.
Frank was born in 1926, and raised in Santa Monica, Calif. He was the only son of Franklin Hayes Erickson and Sidonia Maude Murray.
In 1944 Frank enlisted in the Navy during World War II. His service included duty on the USS Alabama, USS Pine Island and USS Curtis. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
After serving his country, Frank married Sidney Jean Peterson, the daughter of Ned Peterson and Bertha Smith. Frank had met Sidney while working on a church play produced by his youth group in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This marriage resulted in three children, two sons and one daughter.
Shortly after getting married Frank started what became a more than 25-year career in the motion picture industry. He spent his first few years working for MGM as a carpenter and foreman. That was followed by several years at 20th Century Fox - working on such movies as 'The Sound of Music, ' 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, ' 'Planet of the Apes, ' 'Sand Pebbles' and 'The Towering Inferno.' Finally, he spent his last years working at Walt Disney to design and build various parts of the Orlando, Fla., Disney World theme park and the Bear Country Adventure at Disneyland in Los Angeles, Calif.
In 1968, Frank and Sidney divorced. Frank married Harumi Nakamura in 1974. In that same year Frank and Harumi happened to visit Hood River, Ore., on a vacation. Captivated by the beauty of this Columbia Gorge area surrounded by Mount Hood and Mount Adams, Frank thought this would be perfect farming country. Always having a strong desire to own a farm, the couple found and purchased an orchard on Alameda Drive in Hood River.
Frank and Harumi owned and managed this orchard for 20 years. During this time they enjoyed becoming part of the friendship and warmth found in the Hood River Valley community. In addition, during this time they also expanded their household to include the care and support of Frank's children from his previous marriage. While Frank and Harumi never had a child of their own, together they nurtured and made a new family from all of Frank's children from his previous marriage.
Frank sold the orchard in 1994, and moved to his final residence in White Salmon. While living in White Salmon, Frank served most of his time working as a financial clerk for his church - the White Salmon, Wash., Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. During this service Frank grew to know and love many of the residents of the White Salmon area.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Harumi; his eldest son, Ned, and his companion, Karen; his second son, Brian, and daughter-in-law, Lynn; and his only daughter, Eve, and son-in-law, David. Finally at the time of Frank's passing he leaves behind nine grandchildren (Angie, Nicholas, Amy, Peter, Lindsay, Sonny, Maxine, Aaron and Avery) and four great-grandchildren (Kayla, Clayton, Benjamin, and Sawyer).
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; (541) 386-1000.
