Joan Pratt
Joan Pamela Logan was born Aug. 25, 1945, in Hood River, Ore., to Floyd Douglas Logan and Betty Lou Madeleine (Allegre) Logan. Joan grew up in Springfield, Ore., where she attended Springfield High School and the University of Oregon.
Joan has many fond memories during her youth of returning to the Hood River Valley to visit her grandparents.
Upon completion of her bachelor's degree in education, Joan met her sweetheart, Norman L. Pratt. Their courtship lasted two years, after which they were married Aug. 29, 1969. During that time Joan started a teaching career and started work on her master's degree, which she completed in 1971.
In 1973, Joan and Norman started their family with the birth of their oldest child, Nina. Over the next five years son Nathan and two additional daughters, Noelle and Nicole, completed the family.
After the birth of Nina, Joan and Norman made the financial sacrifice to allow Joan to be a stay-at-home mom. Keeping her children cared for and providing them with all the learning experiences possible was always a higher priority for Joan, than accumulation of worldly possessions.
She ingrained in her children the need for education and love of learning that was instrumental in all her children obtaining bachelor's degrees.
Joan possessed an insatiable appetite for learning. She had many interests, including gardening, oil painting, sewing, knitting, quilting, horses, chickens, music, cooking, fishing and many other things. When she found a new interest she would obtain all the books she could find on the subject so she could gain a thorough understanding.
For example, the family went on many trips when the children were small, throughout the state of Oregon. Joan purchased a book on the geology of the state so that we could all learn about the different formations and topography we encountered on our trips.
Joan and family were introduced to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1974. She completed her study of the church after a short amount of time and was convinced of the truthfulness of the gospel. However, she patiently waited until 1983 to get baptized, because she was waiting for Norman to find out for himself that joining the church was the correct course of action.
Joan and Nina became members first, followed by Norman, who then baptized Nathan when he turned 8 in that same year. Noelle and Nicole followed suit in later years when they reached 8 years of age. The family was sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on Nov. 15, 1984.
Joan was a wonderful wife and mother. She was a constant support to both husband and children; she did all she could to support them in all their endeavors. She was willing to pull up stakes and move the family to Austin, Texas, in 1983 so Norman could obtain work, and again in 1984 when the family moved to Albuquerque, N.M.
Joan was overjoyed in 1988 when the family had the opportunity to return to Oregon and live in Hood River, where she had many fond memories.
Joan had many opportunities to serve the Lord and others. She loved giving of herself and she loved those she served. We have many memories of Mom being gone for meetings or going to visit someone in need while she served as Ward, and then Stake Relief Society President.
There were many fantastic dinners and desserts we watched go to other families while we got leftovers. We understood, though, and loved Mom even more because of the caring, kind person she was.
Although Joan loved serving those in the church and community, her first love was always serving her family. She was always there whenever we had a problem, even if it was in the middle of the night. She went to help each of her daughters when they had their children and she loves all her grandchildren very much.
Joan was diagnosed with cancer in September 2008. Despite aggressive treatment and several major surgeries, she was very determined to be positive and had unwavering hope. During all of her suffering she uplifted those around her with her happiness and love of life.
She was also very determined to continue living her life and in that time went on many drift boat trips, helped train an unbroken mustang, learned to quilt, sewed for her grandchildren, gardened and canned. She passed away in her home July 19, 2010, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Joan is survived and will be dearly missed by her husband of 41 years, Norman Pratt, at their home in Parkdale, Ore.; children Nina (daughter) and Jonathan Torrey, of Pasco, Wash., Nathan (son), of Parkdale, Ore., Noelle (daughter) and Donnie Witherspoon, of Lebanon, Ore., and Nicole (daughter) and Jason Swigert, of Surprise, Ariz.; and her 12 grandchildren: Zeniff, Arianna and Zayden Torrey, Colton Pratt, Emily, Brandon, Christopher, Benjamin, Anna and Adam Witherspoon, and BreeAnn and Aubrey Swigert.
She is also survived by her parents, Floyd and Betty Lou Logan, and sisters; Janice Gossler and Debbie Kaczenski.
Services are planned for 11 a.m. Monday, July 26, at the Hood River Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Bishop Gary Hornbeck will conduct. Graveside rites will follow at Pine Grove Butte cemetery of Hood River. Viewing will be one hour prior to her service and also on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Anderson's.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center; 541-386-1000.

Judith Lyda
Judith 'Judy' Ann Lyda passed away July 15, 2010, at her home in The Dalles, Ore. She was born Aug. 26, 1947, in Hood River, Ore.
A graveside service will be held July 27 at 2 p.m. at the Pine Grove Butte cemetery. Services will be led by Judy's family and friends.
Judy was born and raised here in the Hood River area. She was a great friend to those who had the honor of knowing her. She was a very happy, loving and outgoing lady who loved her life and those she had in it.
She was a very positive, strong individual who had many passions in life. She loved canning, gardening, hunting mushrooms, all animals and most of the entire outdoors!
Judy had many friends from when she worked Walmart, K-Mart and the Hood River Railroad; she was a collector of friends. She loved her dog, 'Dee Dee, ' and cat, 'Corny, ' as well as her close friend, Jeannette Cochran, and her family that Judy adopted as her own.
Judy was blessed with the ultimate gift in life: She found her soul mate, the love of her life and her best friend when she met Bobby Ray Roberts. They shared almost 30 years of their lives together.
During that time they were able to share many adventures together. As partners for life they did everything together and enjoyed every second they were able to share.
Some of their most cherished memories included their hunting and fishing trips. They loved camping and floating down the Deschutes River just for the relaxation. They had so much in common that they never ran out of things to do together. They enjoyed each other's company and never missed the opportunity to make the most out of their time together.
Judy lost her soul mate and best friend on April 16, 2007. She always said that she felt like she had lived the perfect life because she was able to share it with Bob. She had the most beautiful memories anyone could possibly imagine or even ask for. She lived a very full, satisfying life and was always grateful for everyone she had the pleasure of knowing.
She will be forever in our hearts and our memories and missed by all whose lives she touched.
Judy loved her friends and family very much and always talked about how important it is to never take those who love you for granted. She had the biggest, most loving heart of anyone we knew. May she rest in peace with her best friend and soul mate.
Judy was predeceased by her father, Whitman Angus Lyda, in 1968; her mother, Dixie Miller Lyda, in 1995, and her only sibling, Joseph Lloyd Lyda, in 1991. She was also predeceased by her paternal grandparents, William Angus and Leona Whitman Lyda, of Marble Falls, Texas.
Her closest living relatives in Texas are Beverly Farmer Clement, of Pleasanton; William Farmer, of New Braunfels; Darlene Farmer Oostermeyer, of Marble Falls; Jane Lyda Gatwood, of Kemp; Leonard Lyda, of Arkansas; and LaNelle Lyda, of Colorado.
Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center; 541-386-1000.

Margaret then earned a master's degree in special education from Chicago State University. She single-handedly moved her two young children from Chicago to southern California in 1976, where she became a special education teacher, and eventually department chair at Poway High School in Poway, Calif. She remained at Poway for 15 years, retiring in 1991.
Margaret married William A. Charland Jr. on June 25, 1960. They have two children, Susan Charland Burke, of Sherwood, Ore., , and Jay Charland, of Salem, Ore. She married John D. Smith in San Diego, Calif., on May 29, 1979.

In retirement her true vocation, grandmother, flowered. Devoted to Stephanie and Rachael, she knitted and sewed for them through their childhoods, and planned special activities for their frequent times together.
Margaret also discovered weaving, actively participating in weaving circles in White Salem, Hood River and Libby, Mont., where she spent several summers. She donated many fine works of weaving and knitting to local and international charities.
As a family we would like to thank all those who supported her, near and far. She was deeply touched by all the expressions of love and care. Her remarkable strength and determination, love of life and family and care for all will continue to be felt by those who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
We also would like to acknowledge the incredible care she received from Dr. Stacy Lewis and everyone at Providence Oncology & Hematology Care Clinic, the staff at the 5 West Oncology Ward at Portland's St. Vincent Hospital and Serenity Hospice. Thank you for being a part of her life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the Maryknoll Lay Missioners, American Academy of Neurology Foundation, the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor's choice. A private interment will be held at Lakeside cemetery, Trout Lake, Wash., at a later date.

Jackie Frost
Jacqueline Marie 'Jackie' Frost, 80, of Hood River, Ore., passed away March 28, 2010, at Providence Medical Center in Portland, Ore. Jackie was born Feb. 1, 1930, in South Gate, Calif.
Jackie had a deep relationship with God throughout her life, always keeping her Bible close at hand and sharing God's love daily with her friends and family.
A service to mourn Jackie's passing and celebrate her life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at the First Baptist Church of Hood River, 1889 Belmont Ave. Interment will follow at Idlewilde cemetery in Hood River. Pastor Bruce Parker will officiate.
Jackie was born in South Gate and grew up in Los Angeles until 1950, graduating from San Luis Obispo High School in 1948. On March 23, 1951, she married William 'Bill' Joseph Frost in Fullerton, Calif., and to this union were blessed four children: Lynn, Christine, Michael and Kurtis. They lived in Orange County, Calif., from 1951 until 1982, when they moved to Oregon.
The 'new life' on the Cooper Spur Ranch in Parkdale, Ore., was quite different from living the city life in Southern California. Bill and Jackie enjoyed many family vacations, taking all of their children and grandchildren to fun destinations.
Jackie and Bill recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary, on March 23, 2010.
Jackie earned her 'doctorate' in homemaking by raising four active children and one active husband. Bill and Jackie raised their oldest granddaughter and Jackie built a special relationship with each and every one of her seven grandchildren.
Recently blessed with a great-granddaughter, she was delighted to show photos of this beautiful baby to friends and family. Anyone who knew Jackie remembers the light that shone in her eyes when her grandchildren were around. She shared the story of Jesus with them by reading books to them and also showed God's love in her life to them through her actions and gentle nature.
She was a devout Christian and very active in the Hood River First Baptist Church, serving as a deaconess and community bible study fellowship leader, and assisted with various other church committees through the years.
Jackie treasured spending time working in her beautiful flower garden. She was an avid reader, water aerobics participant, community musical program contributor and lover of beautiful music, which she enjoyed by attending concerts in Portland. She was most content in the company of family and friends, visiting and enjoying being together.
She was an incredible cook and a gifted hostess. She made sure everyone felt comfortable in her home. She often spoke of the special friends in her birthday group. Her favorite family tradition followed prayers before meals with family and friends, where all would hold hands and after the prayer, chant loudly, 'We are a happy family!'
Jackie Frost was a gentle and caring soul, who used her calm nature to smooth out the edges on even the most difficult of situations.
So loved by her family and friends, Jackie is survived and will be dearly missed by her husband of 59 years, Bill Frost, of Hood River; daughters Lynn M. Snyder and her husband, Don, of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Christine S. Frost, of Hood River; and sons Michael W. Frost and his wife, Susan, of Hood River, and Kurtis J. Frost and his wife, Jill, of Hood River.

Frost and James D. Frost; great-granddaughter Ada Comizzoli; sister-in-law Joyce, of Wildomar, Calif.; and numerous other distant family and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Rowan Brown and Margaret Christine (Phegley) Brown, and brother David R. Brown.
Memorials are suggested to Horizon Christian School, Hood River, in care of Anderson's Tribute Center, 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000.
