LaVerne Stubbs

LaVerne Lincoln Stubbs, 95, passed away June 19, 2010, at his home in Cascade Locks, Ore. LaVerne was born Feb. 12, 1915.
LaVerne was born one of 13 children and was raised in Little Rock, Wash., the son of J.M. and Carie Millett. He worked for the Port of Cascade Locks from the early 1970s until his retirement in 1993.

In August of 1956, he married Marjorie Lydia Bowers in Stevenson, Wash., and to this union were blessed seven children.

LaVerne was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman, often taking three- to four-week trips to Canada to hunt moose, deer and elk.

LaVerne is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife, Marjorie at their Cascade Locks home; seven children: Joe (and Rhonda) Stubbs, of Baker City, Ore., Wanda (and John) Brunecz, of Fairview, Ore., Marion Stubbs, of Drain, Ore., Glenda (and Jesse) Groves, of Cascade Locks, Barbara (and Irwin) Oelhafen, of Beaverton, Ore., Donna (and Pete) Hallan, of Portland, Ore., and Catherine Steffen, of Portland, Ore.; and 80-plus grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A service to honor LaVerne is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at the Port of Cascade Locks Pavilion with a potluck reception to immediately follow.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000.

Denzil Miller

Denzil Dwight Miller passed away on Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at age 90, surrounded by family at his home in Cascade Locks, Ore. The cause of his death was cancer.

Denzil was born Feb. 8, 1920, in Grant City, Worth County, Mo. His parents, Edgar Clark and Annie Laurie Baker Miller, raised a family of five boys and one girl on their farmland.

Denzil was the second son born to the family. Brothers Drexel, Wendell, Edgar and Gilbert, and sister Wanda preceded Denzil in death.

The family migrated west from Missouri to Portland, Ore., where Denzil worked in building and construction, in lumber yards, on forest service projects and in factories. On Sept. 19, 1940, Denzil enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 52 months in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 59th Coast Artillery. He was a prisoner of war of the Japanese for 39 months, and received the Purple Heart Medal among other honors.

After his discharge from the Army March 9, 1946, Denzil resumed work in building and construction in the Salem and Portland areas. While visiting friends in Portland, his attention was taken by a neighbor's great laugh and sweet smile.

Six months later, on Sept. 28, 1950, Denzil married Annette May Hafertepe in Vancouver, Wash. Part of the honeymoon was putting finishing touches onto the house Denzil built for them in north Portland.

Denzil's love of the outdoors led him into service with the Oregon State Fish Commission, later known as Fish and Wildlife. He worked at the Trask Hatchery outside Tillamook, followed by the Sandy Fish Hatchery, Siletz Hatchery, Cascade Hatchery at Eagle Creek, and Oxbow Hatchery outside Cascade Locks, where he retired in 1981.

Denzil was known for his gardens and flower beds, giving away generous amounts of vegetables to neighbors and friends, and making the best dill pickles. He belonged to the Pioneer Potlatch Senior Mealsite in Cascade Locks for many years.

He enjoyed bird watching, woodworking projects and jigsaw puzzles during the winter before he could get his hands back into the dirt again each spring.

He is survived by his son, Patrick James Miller, in Salem; and daughters Catherine Ann Wick, in Pendleton, and Marie Theresa Miller, in Cascade Locks, with a loving black Labrador, Mackenzie. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Michelle Miller, in Driggs, Idaho, Ann Allison, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Brian Wick, in Pendleton, Ore., and Richard Wick, in Omaha, Neb.

Denzil was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, who passed away Feb. 3, 1998. He was the last of the 'Miller Boys, ' with brothers Drexel, Wendell, Edgar and Gilbert preceding him in death.

Graveside services with military honors were held Wednesday, Aug. 25, at the Cascade Locks cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031; 541-386-1000.

Gabriel Garcia Flores

Gabriel Garcia Flores passed away at his home in Hood River, Ore., Aug. 22, 2010, at the age of 60. He was born on Oct. 9, 1949, in Guanajuato, Mexico, to Vicente Garcia Almanza and Francisca Flores Perez.

Gabriel worked at Rick and Kathy Nishimoto's orchards as a foreman for 20 years.

He is survived by his companion of 21 years, Deanna Stone; his granddaughter, Reina Stone, of Irrigon, Ore.; sister Carmela Garcia Flores, of Riverside, Calif.; and brothers Luis Garcia Flores, of Kansas City, and Vicenta Garcia Flores, of Rockford, Ill.

Gilbert Clarke

Much to our sorrow, Gilbert T. Clarke, 84, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010, at The Oregon Veterans Home with his family around him. Gilbert was born Aug. 11, 1925, in the back of the Valley Christian Church to Robert A. and Margaret M. (Taylor) Clarke.

Gilbert was born the fifth child of seven in the Clarke family. He was a very feisty and talented child. He frustrated many a teacher as he was only interested in art, music and physical education.

One teacher took a special interest in Gilbert, keeping him after school for art lessons. He won his first state award for art in the fourth grade. That was the first of many recognitions for art he would receive in his life.

A singing contest found him in his own radio show for KODI, at the age of 15, singing and playing the guitar. He was known as the 'Yodeling Cowboy.' He was later offered a chance to move to Montana to a larger station and a possible singing career, but he felt at 15 that he just wasn't ready for that.

In 1943 during World War II, his early singing career ended when he left school at 17 to join the navy. He spent three years in active duty on the destroyer USS Gwin. After returning home, he pursued his love of art and graduated from the Institute of Commercial Art and later studied horse anatomy at Washington State University.

In 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Ann Harder. They raised three children, Peggy, Ken and Colleen. He soon started his own house painting business, once advertising to paint any church in town for free.

Besides painting houses, he also spent many hours painting pictures in his studio. He became well known for his western art, winning state and national competitions with paintings throughout the United States. When the children were small, he was first offered a job with Disney in Los Angeles, Calif., but he turned it down as he didn't want to raise his children in a big city.

Throughout his life, he was also a dog trainer and a boxing coach, an Oregon state turkey calling champion, a 4-H leader, and a wonderful father.

In 1984 Gil and Shirley divorced. In 1985, Gilbert married Vaughna Walston. In 1990 they moved to Montana to follow his dream of western art, showing his paintings in many shows - including the Jay Contway and Friends show during the Charles Russell Show in Great Falls, Mont.

Gilbert has shown in many galleries and art shows in Oregon, Washington and Montana over the last 25 years. In 1995, Gil and Vaughna had had enough of the Montana winters, and moved back to Vaughna's hometown of Wasco, Ore.

Gil was a man of so many talents. He was amazing to watch with a brush and canvas - he made it look so easy. It's one of the many things we will miss about him. He said he wanted to paint a masterpiece before he died. We think he has painted many.

Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Robert Clarke and Alan Clarke, and his sisters, Violet Nelson and Theresa Sherrell.

He is survived by his wife, Vaughna Clarke; his daughter Peggy Courtney, of Eugene, Ore., son Ken Clarke and his wife, Alice, of Hood River, Ore., and daughter Colleen Vannet and her husband, Chris, also of Hood River; stepchildren Chuck Walston, of Hood River, and Julie Walston, of Milwaukee, Ore.; his brother Richard Clarke, of Hood River, and sister Vera Owens, of Gresham, Ore.

Also surviving are grandchildren Travis Brown and his wife, Tegan, Shannon Webster, Marsha Beldon, Amy Bauer, Nathan Clarke and his wife, Christie, Renee Clarke, Calli and Casey Vannet and Summer Walston; and four great-grandchildren: Shayla and Carly Webster, DeShawn Brant and Drew Brown.

A service for Gilbert will be held at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Hood River on Monday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at Anderson's Tribute Center.

Family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Gorge and the American Cancer Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Anderson's Tribute Center (Funerals, Receptions, Cremations), 1401 Belmont Ave., Hood River, OR 97031.

James Streufert

James 'Fritz' Cedric Streufert, a resident of the Cornelius, Ore., community (formerly of Hood River) died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at his home. He was 69 years old.

A celebration of Fritz's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21, at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church at 4265 S.W. Golf Course Road, Cornelius, with Pastor Michael Warmbier officiating. Private family interment will be held at St. Peter's Lutheran cemetery in Blooming.
Fritz was born on July 20, 1941, in Glencoe, Minn., the son of Herbert and Norma Streufert. The family moved to Seattle, Wash., where he enjoyed football and graduated from Lincoln Union High School.

He served in the United States Army Special forces, doing three tours of duty in Vietnam.

His formal education includes a math degree from Multnomah Community College (now Portland Community College) and course completion at Le Cordon Bleu, also in Portland.

His interests often merged with work (a meat cutter early in life and meat processing later). He was known for his sausage and curing skills, and worked under the supervision of a local rabbi in kosher protocol. He worked for Safeway Stores, helping open several outlets, meanwhile owning and operating his own mobile slaughter and processing business in Hood River.

Cars also caught his eye. He did custom Corvette work earlier in life and progressing to vintage cars later. He was a charter member of Inliners International and participated in their activities until his passing.

He also served the community as a deputy sheriff, a custodian at Wy'east and later at Mid Valley schools in Hood River County.

Work was his motivation and people, his passion. Working or playing, people gravitated to his personable nature. He was a longtime member of St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cornelius. He was known for comforting troubled souls with his caring words.

On Sept. 9, 2000, he married Gail Elaine Ohlund, who survives him along with six children and their mates: Johnathan and Tami Ohlund, of Trail, Ore., Jerry and Roxanne Ohlund, of Meridan, Idaho, Dennis Ohlund and Elizabeth, of Athens, Mich., Katrina Melton, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Derrick Streufert and Molly, of Parkdale, Ore., and Heidi Streufert and Tryan, of Astoria, Ore.

One brother and sister-in-law, David and Linda Streufert, of Deer Lodge, Mont., and one sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Glenn Stocker, of Selah, Wash., and 10 grandchildren, Steven, Mary Jane, Jennifer, Tiffany, Kairi, Lizette and Merrick Ohlund and Emma, Jaxson and Parker Streufert, also survive.

The family suggests remembrances in his honor be given to St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, at 4265 S.W. Golf Course Road, Cornelius, OR 97113.
Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements; 503-357-2161.

Roy Stave

Roy taught at Wy'east High School from 1951 until 1955, and at Hood River High School from 1955 through 1962, where he taught English and journalism, was advisor of the GUIDE, school newspaper, and directed the school plays.

He was very active in community theater and as a volunteer fireman. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, where he was Grand Exalted Ruler from 1961-62. He is remembered for his enthusiasm, quick wit, and great sense of humor.

On Feb. 7, 1958, he married MarJean Boyd Matthews. They moved to Portland and vicinity where Roy taught at Jefferson High School and PCC where he retired in 1978.
He enjoyed anything connected to drama and dancing.

Survivors include his wife, MarJean Stave, of Hillsboro; daughters Linda Hylton of Delano, Calif., Marian Stave, of Lompoc, Calif., Kay Wallace, of Hillsboro, and Patricia Hanson, of Portland; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grand children.

Arrangements, cremation and interment are all under the care and direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Portland, Ore.

It was his decision to not have funeral service. He will be missed.
