Tom Lundy
1956-2003
Services will be March 8 for Tom Lundy of Cottage Grove, who died Feb. 27 of pancreatic cancer. He was 46.
He was born Nov. 26, 1956, in San Pedro, Calif., to Ken and Rena Lundy.
He moved to Cottage Grove at age 5. He attended London Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School, and graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1974.
Upon graduation, he worked at Crater Lake National Park and Heath Logging Company and later became a registered nurse. He worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene in the emergency department, ICU and short-stay unit. He loved his profession and took great pride in his work.
He married Nancy Diane Newton on June 5, 1984.
Lundy was a history buff and loved poetry, Greek mythology and English literature. He also enjoyed ping-pong, tennis, chess, swimming, cooking, camping, and most of all his family.
He is survived by his mother and beloved wife; daughters Ramie of Eugene and Lindsay of Cottage Grove; son David of Los Angeles; sister Christine Kopachik of Cottage Grove; brothers Danny Armas and Ron and Jim Lundy, all of Cottage Grove; and numerous nieces and nephews, all in the Lane County area.
Saturday's service will be at 1 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. A private cremation has been held.

Virginia Hutchins
1926-2003
Virginia May Hutchins of Creswell died March 24 of age-related causes. She was 77.
Hutchins was born Jan. 27, 1926, in White City, Ill., to Jessie and Mary Zumwalt. She married Elmer Hutchins in Illinois in 1946. He died in 1979.
She was a homemaker and lived in Marcola before settling in Creswell seven years ago. She was a member of the Neighborhood Watch in Marcola and patrolled her neighborhood with a CB radio. Her handle was "Co-pilot."
Her interests included watching television, traveling and camping.
She enjoyed caring for her pets and spending time with her family.
Survivors include a son, Larry Gehrig of Litchfield, Ill.; two brothers, Charles and Herbert Zumwalt, both of Litchfield; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great- great-grandchild.
A son, Joseph Gehrig, died Oct. 31, 1991.
A private family gathering was held. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Don Mefford
1930-2003
Don Taylor Mefford of Cottage Grove died March 18 of congestive heart failure. He was 72.
Mefford was born Sept. 27, 1930, in Bloomfield, Neb., to Taylor and Caroline Mefford. He graduated from Bloomfield High School in Nebraska. He lived for many years in Norfolk, Neb., moving to Phoenix, Ariz., in the early 1980s and to Cottage Grove in 2002.
He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
He married Mary Kaye Bazille in Phoenix in 1988. She preceded him in death.
He was Superintendent of Highway Department of Roads in Norfolk for 25 years, then was Superintendent Supervisor Department of Highways in Phoenix for 13 years.
He enjoyed watching college football and was an avid Cornhusker fan. He also enjoyed playing golf. He was a life member of VFW Post 1644 in Norfolk.
Survivors include five daughters, Karen Klug of York, Neb., Nancy Terril of Pierce, Neb., Sherry Magwire of Omaha, Neb., Marsha West of Yucca Valley, Calif., and Amy Hoffman of Cottage Grove; five sons, Greg and Mike of Norfolk, Brian of Lincoln, Neb., Kevin of Las Vegas, Nev., and Nick Tennis of Salinas, Calif.; seven sisters, Vivian Frank, Marvil Lukins, Nila Scaatler, Judy Skriven, Linda Huttman, Dorothy Downey and Lois Roseburg; two brothers, Ferdy and Jack; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Two brothers, Jerry and Pete, died previously.
Services in Norfolk were planned. Inurnment is at Prospect Hills cemetery in Norfolk.
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph Tharp Sr.
1920-2003
Joseph Owen Tharp Sr. of Drain died March 22 of age-related causes. He was 82.
Tharp was born April 28, 1920, in Snyder, Texas, to James Tharp and Annie Thruston. He married his wife, Geraldine, in Indio, Calif., in September 1946.
As a young man he worked as a cowboy at several ranches throughout Texas and Nevada. He studied general education, mechanics and welding at The College of the Desert in Palm Desert, Calif. He served in the Army in six major campaigns as a radio/telephone operator with the 7th Cavalry Division during World War II.
He worked as a deputy sheriff for the Roswell Police Department in New Mexico and as a security officer for Global International. He also worked as a minister and started several churches in California and New Mexico before retiring and moving to Drain in 1984. He enjoyed camping and fishing, especially on the Snake River.
Survivors include his wife, children, brothers, sisters, grandchildren and great-grand-children.
A private memorial service was held. Myrtle Grove Funeral Services in Coquille is in charge of arrangements.

Craig Richard Dougherty
Craig Richard Dougherty of Creswell died Aug. 10, 1999, of a heart attack. He was 52.
Mr. Dougherty was born March 28, 1947, in Altedena, Calif., to Edward and Mary Jogerst Dougherty.
He married Lorry Diana Larson in California on Dec. 28, 1974.
Mr. Dougherty received a four-year degree from the University of Cal Poly at Pamona and served in the U.S. Army. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 24 years, transferring to Creswell from West Covina, Calif., in 1984. He worked as a postal clerk at the Cottage Grove Post Office.
Mr. Dougherty's hobbies included gardening, nature and respect of the earth. He was an Eagle Scout.
Mr. Dougherty is survived by his wife; a son, Robert E. Dougherty, of Creswell; four daughters, Brandi A. Dougherty, Diana L. Dougherty, Cindi R. Dougherty and Megan M. Dougherty, all of Creswell; two brothers, Edward Nathan Dougherty Jr. and Bruce F. Dougherty, both of Glendora, Calif.; and two sisters, Patricia A. Dougherty of Baldwin Park, Calif., and Linda L. Dwyier of Upland, Calif.
Flowers, bushes, trees or bird feeders may be planted in lieu of sending flowers.
A private family memorial was on Aug. 15, 1999. Musgrove Family Mortuary handled the burial.

L. Maxine Sarrett
Former Cottage Grove resident L. Maxine Sarrett of Springfield died Aug. 11, 1999, of age-related causes. She was 81.
Mrs. Sarrett was born Oct. 25, 1917, in Cottage Grove, to Charles and Viola Burge.
She married Virgil L. Attridge in Vancouver, Wash., on Nov. 28, 1934. Mr. Attridge preceded her in death in 1947. She then married Joe E. Sarrett in Eugene in 1948. Mr. Sarrett preceded her in death in 1986.
Mrs. Sarrett attended Cottage Grove High School. She worked as a homemaker and in a variety store in Cottage Grove.
Her hobbies included genealogy and family. She loved holidays with her family and grandchildren and was an avid reader. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Genealogy Association.
Mrs. Sarrett is survived by two sons, LeRoy Attridge of Springfield and Keith Attridge of Silverton; two daughters, Beverly Cooley of Cottage Grove and Darlene Kelly of Madras; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service was on Aug. 14, 1999, at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Burial will be at Fir Grove cemetery.

Lavern Holmes
Worked at Bohemia Lumber Co.
Lavern Henry Holmes of Cottage Grove died on Jan. 31, 2000, of congestive heart failure. He was 70.
He was born on May 2, 1929, in Eugene to Frank and Charlotta Holmes.
Mr. Holmes married Mary D. Cornell on Oct. 8, 1994, in Ketchican, Alaska.
He was a mill worker for Bohemia Lumber Co.
He enjoyed gardening, farming and visiting friends and family.
Mr. Holmes was involved in the ministry of the Assembly of God Church.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Nancy Hass of Dayton; four sons, Dan Holmes of Tomball, Texas, Sonny Gordon and Tim Cornell, both of Ketchican, Alaska, and Leslie Gordon of Seattle, Wash.; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial was Friday at the Family Praise Center. Inurnment was at Fir Grove cemetery.

Lake Ledford
Served in the U.S. Army
Lake Robert Ledford of Curtin died on Feb. 2, 2000, of age-related causes. He was 82.
He was born on Sept. 30, 1917, in Blairsville, Ga., to Burt and Callie Ledford and married Coy Carringer on April 27, 1939, in Hiawassee, Ga.
He was a resident of Vale before moving to Cottage Grove in 1992.
Mr. Ledford was a logger and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He enjoyed fishing and bird hunting. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Medford.
Mr. Ledford is survived by four sons, Sammy Ledford of Haysville, N.C., Jack Ledford of Twitty, Texas, Vince Ledford of Cottage Grove and Gary Ledford of Tempe, Ariz.; six daughters, Carrie Blanchard of Drain, Wanda Farrell of Madras, Peggy Cook of Cottage Grove, Helen Willis and Linda Ledford, both of Medford, and Betty Steele of Concord, Calif.; three sisters, Truly Odom and Hazel Townsend, both of North Carolina, and Gladys Postell of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Ledford.
The funeral was Monday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Burial was at Comstock cemetery in Curtin.
