Wallace "Chick" Ciochetti
1921-2003
Wallace "Chick" Ciochetti, a 60-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 26 at the age of 82 from complications related to Alzheimers disease. A memorial service will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Tombstone, Ariz., Anton and Mary Ciochetti.
He joined the military and served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1941 until 1946. He married Phylis Carlisle Nov. 21, 1943, in Eugene.
He received a masters degree in Education from the University of Oregon in 1947. He was a well-known teacher and coach at Cottage Grove High School from 1948 to 1986. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove.
He was an avid runner and enjoyed traveling with his family. He actively supervised the Water Safety Program for the Lane County Red Cross and served as the first manager, instructor and coach at the Cottage Grove Swimming Pool. Chick enjoyed a long involvement with track and field and was employed by the Mexican Sport Federation to oversee the coach training program for the 1968 Olympics. He was an official for the Olympic Trials in 1972 and 1988, as well as a manager for the U.S. Team in the Pan Am Games of 1971, 1983 and 1987. He officiated at many of the University of Oregon track meets.
Survivors include his wife Phylis Ciochetti; daughter Candi Ciochetti of Kirkland, Wash., and sons David Ciochetti of Portland and Tony Ciochetti of Chapel Hill, N.C.
Chick was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
A private cremation was under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Cottage Grove High School Track Club.

Irene Smith
1918-2003
Irene Mae Smith, 85, of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 20 of age-related causes. Smith was born May 9, 1918, in Girard, Kan., to Ralph and Barbara Mattox Clutter. She married Earl Smith in Girard on April 3, 1938. She grew up and attended schools in Girard. She moved to Cottage Grove from Girard in 1951. She was a homemaker and a very active member of the Church of Christ at Sixth Street and Gibbs Avenue in Cottage Grove. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and taking care of her family. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Barbara Violette of Tucson, Ariz.; a sister, Helen Rua of Pittsburg, Kan.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A son, Donald, died previously.
The funeral was held Sept. 26 at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove. Burial was at Fir Grove cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of Christ at Sixth Street and Gibbs Avenue in Cottage Grove.

Stanley Jeremiah Jr.
1927-2003
A graveside service was held Sept. 23 for Standley Watie Jeremiah Jr., of La Pine, formerly of Cottage Grove, who died Sept. 21 of age-related causes. He was 76.
Jeremiah was born Feb. 7, 1927, in Muldrow, Okla., to Standley Jeremiah Sr., and Willie Vaughan Jeremiah. He married Alphild Hayes in Reno, Nev., on May 17, 1988.
He served in the Army during World War II. He lived in Cottage Grove from the late 1940s until 1988, when he settled in La Pine.
He worked as a crane operator for Weyerhaeuser for many years.
He was a past president of the Springfield Eagles Lodge and a member of the Cottage Grove Elks, the La Pine Moose Lodge and the American Legion Post in La Pine. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ted of Payette, Idaho; a daughter, Karen Jeremiah of Ontario; three stepsons, Guy McKay of Burns and Jay and Raymond McKay, both of Springfield; a stepdaughter, Janet Brown of Salem; a brother, Clinton of La Pine; several grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren. A son, Bob, died previously.
A service was held at the La Pine Community cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Newberry Hospice, P.O. Box 1888, La Pine, OR 97739.

Ilene Grimes
1919-2003
Ilene Annette Trunnell Yates Grimes, a life-long resident of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 25, at the age of 84 from cancer.
A service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove.
She was born to parents Hugh and Esther (Anderson) Trunnell Sept. 13, 1919, in the same Cottage Grove home she died in.
She attended Latham Elementary and was a 1942 graduate of Cottage Grove High School. She attended Oregon State College and received a masters degree from the University of Oregon in 1962.
She married Robert Yates in 1942 and they were divorced in 1971. In 1980, she married Robert Lee Grimes, a former high school classmate.
She worked in the Home Education Program in the Eugene School District where she taught for several years before moving to Olympia, Wash. She owned and operated Browsers Used Book Shop in Olympia before moving back to Cottage Grove. She lived on the Century Farm built by her parents.
Her hobbies included her family history, mountain climbing, traveling and spending time with her family. She was active with the Cottage Grove Historical Society.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove, where she originally joined in 1934.
She is survived by husband Bob Grimes; sons John Yates of Cottage Grove, Tom Yates of Eugene and Bob Yates of Eugene; sister Alyce Hansen of Port Ludlow, Wash.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and many more who called her "Grandma."
After the service, interment will be at Fir Grove cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to McKenzie-Willamette Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Harry Dawson
1938-2003
Harry Dawson, 65, of Cott-age Grove died Sept. 27 after a long illness. A celebration of life and potluck will be Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at 709 S. First St. in Cottage Grove.
He was born in 1938 in Billings, Mont., to Harry and Flora Dawson. He entered the National Guard in 1954 and joined the U.S. Air Force in 1955 and served until 1961.
He moved to Cottage Grove in 1966. He married Gloria Dawson in Reno, Nev., in 1966. They lived in Cottage Grove for the last 36 years. He drove long-haul truck for 33 years and retired in 1999. His hobbies were golfing with his sons and family and gambling with his wife in Reno, Nev.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Dawson; sons Dan Dawson, Dave Dawson and daughter Deb Dawson of Cottage Grove, daughter Melody Dawson of Salem; stepchildren Pat Plourd of California, Joe Plourd of Bend, Barbara Plourd of Phoenix, Ariz., Gen Plourd of Springfield and Mike Plourd of Rockaway Beach; grandchildren Clayton, Celsey, Lindsey, Austin, Sean, Devin, Destiny, Britton and Stanley of Cottage Grove and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial announcement
A memorial service for Mildred L. Safley McCall, 84, of Roseburg will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church. She died of natural causes. She lived most of her life in Cottage Grove until the last 13 years.

Lorraine Crawford
1919-2003
OAKLAND - Lorraine Pearl Nuzman Crawford of Oakland, Ore., died Oct. 5 of heart failure. She was 84. The funeral was held Oct. 12.
She was born June 17, 1919, in Centralia, Kan., to Aurthor and Jenny Valentine Werner Nuzman.
She married Jesse Crawford on Feb. 2, 1957. They bought their home at Rice Valley in 1962, where she lived for the last 41 years.
Crawford worked as a registered nurse, after completing training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She moved to Oakland in 1962.
Her interests included her family, camping, gardening and reading. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Sutherlin and belonged to the Womens Aglow Fellowship. She was also a Douglas County senior companion.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Survivors include six daughters, Dena Jacobson of Seminole, Fla., Linda Kinney of Pelham, Ala., Michele Flanagan of Irvine, Calif., Cindy Benzel of Yoncalla, Mary Nichols of Palmdale, Calif., and Jeanne Rabinowitz of Ventura, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A service was held Oct. 12 at the Assembly of God Church in Sutherlin. Burial followed at Valley View cemetery in Sutherlin. The Chapel of the Firs in Sutherlin is in charge of arrangements.

Nova Simmons-McClintic
1908-2003
Nova Leona Simmons McClintic, 95, died Oct. 1 of age related causes.
A funeral was held Oct. 4.
Simmons-McClintic was born March 7, 1908, in Imnaha to Jasper and Amy Barnes Simmons. She married John McClintic in 1930. He died in 1965.
She and her brothers and sisters worked on the family homestead, where they grew apricots and tomatoes. Chief Josephs tribe would pass by their home in the spring and fall, and her parents bought moccasins from them for their daughters.
Her family lived in Mount Angel for a year before settling in Eugene in 1920.
She finished grade school, but her parents could not afford to buy books for her to attend high school.
She worked in the hop fields as a check girl and later in the bean fields, eventually becoming a yard boss. She served as a Cub Scout leader.
She wintered in Arizona for 20 years and her interests included going to the desert and collecting rocks. She enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting. She also enjoyed taking walks and walked a mile every day until she was 94.
She will be remembered for saying that, "walking was good for the soul, plus you never knew what you were going to see."
Survivors include a son, Roger McClintic of Cottage Grove; a brother, Bob Simmons of Alaska; two sisters, Vivian Harper of Alabama and Violet Adams of Albany; three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The service was held at Lane Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Eugene. Burial was at Lane Memorial Gardens.

Roy Stalder
1926-2003
Roy John Stalder, of Drain, died Oct. 2 at the age of 76 of heart failure. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
A lifelong resident of the area, Stalder was born in Cottage Grove Dec. 8, 1926, to John and Laura (Davisson) Stalder.
He married Donna Addington in Cottage Grove Aug. 27, 1949.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. He worked for Bohemia Logging and as a logging-truck driver.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; two sons, Danny Stalder and his wife, Shirley, of Drain and Donald Stalder of Yoncalla; a brother, Frank Stalder and his wife, Charlene, of Cottage Grove; two sisters, Freda Stalder of Cottage Grove and Nellie and her husband, Melvin Allen, of Crescent; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Mercy Hospice, 2700 Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, Ore. 97470.

Maxine Spanheimer
1918-2003
Maxine Span-heimer, 84, of Cottage Grove died Sept. 9 at Coast Fork Nursing Center in Grants Pass.
She was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Medford to Frank and Addie Rhoades.
She was a homemaker and lived in Grants Pass until 1966 when she moved to Lebanon. In 1986, she moved to Cottage Grove.
She enjoyed playing bingo, reading novels, her dogs and cats and being with her grandkids and family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Emil Jeffcoat and Robert Spanheimer.
Survivors include her son, Donald L. Jeffcoat of Federal Way, Wash.; her daughter, Betty Ann Wilson of Culp Creek; two sisters, Bernice Shier of Medford and Marjorie Griffin of Castle Rock, Wash.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Hull and Hull Funeral Directors in Grants Pass were in charge of arrangements. A graveside service was held at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens Sept. 18.
