Gordon H. Elfving
1925-2004
Gordon H. Elfving, a lifelong resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 11, 2004, at the age of 79 from complications of a stroke.
He was born Feb. 25, 1929, to Harry and Arna Elfving.
He was raised and attended school in Cottage Grove.
He married Adelle Delling on Nov. 11, 1969. She preceded him in death.
He lived with his partner, Irene Wilson.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He was a mill worker for Rikini Lumber Co.
He enjoyed golfing.
He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Cottage Grove Elks.
Survivors include: his life partner, Irene Wilson, of Cottage Grove; a son, Steve Elfving, of Springfield; a daughter, Tami Elmore, of Medford; a sister, June Hammond, of Eugene; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Friday with interment at Lane Memorial Gardens.
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

George P. Bouche
1942-2004
George P. Bouche, a 45-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Oct. 22 at the age of 62 from cardiac related causes.
He was born to Paris and Thelma Bouche on April 7, 1942, in Salem.
He grew up and attended school in Canyonville.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a log truck driver for Weyerhaeuser for more than 40 years.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time in Alaska.
He is survived by his parents: Paris and Thelma Bouche of Bend; his sons and daughters-in-law: Perry Bouche of Cottage Grove, Paul and Megan Bouche of Richland, Wash., Patrick and Tammie Bouche of Cottage Grove; daughter: Joelene Bouche of Springfield; brothers: Joel Bouche and Walter Bouche, both of Bend; and five grandchildren.
A private cremation was held and a memorial service was Tuesday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.

Irene Margaret Emery
1916-2004
Irene Margaret Emery, a life-long resident of Yoncalla, died Oct. 22, 2004, from age-related causes. She died three hours short of her 88th birthday.
She was born to Elmer and Blanche Daugherty on Oct. 23, 1916, in Yoncalla.
She grew up and attended school in Yoncalla, graduating from Yoncalla High School and attending Northwest Bible College for three years.
She was married to Lloyd Emery in Missoula, Mont., on April 4, 1941.
She owned and operated the Gateway Inn in Drain and also worked there as a waitress.
She was a charter member of the Yoncalla Assembly of God Church and at the time of her death, she was a member of the Drain Assembly of God Church.
She moved to Florence in April to be close to family.
She is survived by her husband, Lloyd Emery, of Florence; her sons and daughter-in-laws: Clifford and Merrillin Emery, of Florence, Lloyd George Emery Jr., of Newberg and Michael and Candace Emery of Jamestown, Calif., her daughters and son-in-laws: Judie and Howard Lloyd, of Lincoln City, Kathi and Larry Sims, of Houston, Texas, and Sharon and Neil Gillis, of Troutdale; her sisters: Raye Spencer, of Sebastapol, Calif., Ruthelma Barrett, of West Covina, Calif., and Edriss Morse, of Beaverton; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Arrangements were by Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Drain Assembly of God Church.

Charles R. Gansel
1927-2004
Charles R. Gansel, a 27-year resident of Cottage Grove, died Thursday at the age of 77 from cancer.
He was born to John and Alice Gansel in Alma Center, Wis., on Oct. 17, 1927.
He married Laura Raske in Coeur dAlene, Idaho, on July 3, 1954.
He received a bachelors of science degree from the University of Montana and a masters of science degree from the University of Idaho.
He worked as a forest geneticist for the Bureau of Land Management and was the U.S. Forest Service Center Manager at the Dorena Tree Improvement Center.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the occupation of Japan.
He loved his family, fishing, gardening, genealogy, officiating at track and field meets and football, primarily the Green Bay Packers.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters, the Oregon Track Club and the Cottage Grove Genealogical Society.
He also lived in Syracuse, N.Y., Lake City, Fla., and Eagle Point before moving to Cottage Grove.
He is survived by his wife: Laura Gansel of Cottage Grove; his daughters: Leiyn Gansel of Urbana, Ill., Karlyn Gansel-Ang of Albuquerque, N.M., Lynda Gansel of Cottage Grove, Cheryl Gansel of Boulder, Colo.; and two grandchildren.
No service is planned. Arrangements were made through Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel and Crematorium.

Albert R. Irvine
1915-2004
Albert R. Irvine, longtime resident of Cottage Grove and founder of A.R. Irvine Trucking, died Nov. 7 at the age of 89 from age-related causes.
He was born to Fred and Alice Irvine in Fullerton, Calif., on May 22, 1915.
He graduated from Chaffey High School in Ontario, Calif.
He worked as a machinist in Pomona, Calif., and at the Mare Island Naval Base in Vallejo, Calif., during World War II.
He married Agnes Childers on Feb. 8, 1947.
He moved to Cottage Grove in 1951 and founded A.R. Irvine Trucking, hauling logs and wood products until his retirement in 1979.
He was a member of the Elks and served on the Board of South Lane Television for 15 years.
He enjoyed working at his shop, traveling in his motor home and spending time with his family and pets.
He is survived by his wife: Agnes Childers of Cottage Grove; his sons: Will Childers, Jim Childers and Ronald Irvine, all of Cottage Grove; his daughter: Suzanne Robinson of Novato, Calif.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were held Friday at Rest-Haven Memorial Park and Funeral Home.

Bertha Winston
1919-2004
Bertha Winston, a 26-year-resident of Cottage Grove, died March 25 at the age of 84 from age-related causes.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1919, in Owen, Wis., to August and Hilma Sillampa. She grew up and attended school there.
She was raised on a dairy farm near Owen, Wis., which was pioneered by her Finnish immigrant parents.
She was a homemaker.
After the death of her first husband, she moved to San Francisco with her daughters in 1947. In 1948, she married Michael Winston and raised her four children in California before moving to Oregon in the late 1970s.
She was an avid Scrabble player and enjoyed baking, quilting, needlepoint, crossword puzzles, gardening and spending time with her family.
She was a member of the Cottage Grove Senior Center, Trinity Lutheran Church and a one-time member of the Bohemia Mining Days Senior Court.
She was named outstanding volunteer during National Volunteer Week in 1984 for her work with the Senior Nutrition Program.
Survivors include daughters: Patricia Rhine of El Dorado Hills, Calif., and Sandra Ryan of Santa Rosa, Calif.; sons: Steven Winston of Eugene and Leon Winston of San Francisco, Calif.; sisters: Irene Bacigalupi of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Elsa Denning of Chicago, Ill.; brother: Carl Sillampa of Owen, Wis.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A service is scheduled Friday in Owen, Wis. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cottage Grove Senior Center, 700 E. Gibbs, Cottage Grove, OR 97424.

Julius "Jute" Gerstner
1921-2004
Julius "Jute" Gerstner of Creswell died at the age of 83 from age-related causes.
He was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Garden City, Kan., to Peter and Genevieve Gerstner. He had been a resident of Creswell since 1939.
He married Ethel Louderback in Eugene in 1941.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as a corporal. Later he worked at Cone Lumber Co. in Goshen as a lumber car loader. He retired in 1962.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife; son and daughter-in-law: Larry and Lois Gerstner of Reedsport; son: Norman Gerstner of Reedsport; daughter: Nanette Dutton of Marcola; brothers and sisters-in-law: Isadore and Joy Gerstner of Mission, Texas, Martin and Peggy Gerstner of Reedsport, Lorene and Frank Williams of Eugene and Irene and Lawrence Hird of Dorena; brother: Pete Gerstner of Cottage Grove; sister and brother-in-law: Gertrude and John Pritchard of Yoncalla; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A brother, John Gerstner, died in 1983.
No service is planned. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
