Kermit Grim
1921-2004
Kermit Grim, a 2-1/2 year resident of Cottage Grove, died Feb. 24 at the age of 83 from age-related causes.
He was born May 30, 1921, in Aleppo, Pa., to William and Fern Grim.
He lived in Shingle Town, Calif., and Cottage Grove.
He served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was involved in the Norman-dy invasion.
He worked as an inspector for the aerospace industry.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He was also a leader of the Boy Scouts.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association; Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout of America; and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received a Purple Heart and Silver Star.
Survivors include his son: Lee Grim of Cottage Grove; grandson: Shane Grim of Tennessee; and sisters: Christine Phillips of Florida and Charlotte Cram of Idaho.
No service was planned. A family gathering will be at a later date. A private cremation was held under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Gertrude Maugh
1916-2004
Gertrude "Gertie" Maugh, 87, of Eugene and formerly of Cottage Grove, died on March 16 of age-related causes.
She was born on May 7, 1916, to Michael and Lottie (Smith) Maugh in Camas Valley. She married
Leslie Maugh on May 15, 1937, in Eugene.
A lifetime resident of Oregon, she lived in Saginaw and Cottage Grove before settling in Eugene.
She graduated from Walker High School.
A homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, baking and embroidering. She played the piano and organ at weddings, funerals and church services.
She belonged to a nondenominational Christian fellowship.
She is survived by her husband.
A funeral service took place on March 19 at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene with interment at Lane Memorial Gardens. Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.

Patrick Hampton
1955-2004
Patrick Hampton of Cottage Grove died March 10 at the age of 48 from prostate cancer.
He was born on Nov. 29, 1955, in Long Beach, Calif., to Gordon Hampton and Donna Armor. He completed two years of higher education.
He formerly lived in Yorba Linda, Calif., Fullerton, Calif., and Riverside, Calif.
He married
Lynn Rosendahl in Fullterton, Calif., on Sept. 9, 1978.
He was a small business owner, former owner of Herbs Cycle Town in Cottage Grove and founder of Cycle Town Racing Team. He was previously a master technician in the automotive and motorcycle industry.
He enjoyed model trains, motorcycles, birds, gardening, camping, family gatherings and being with friends.
He is survived by his wife; parents; sons: Christopher Hampton of Eugene, Kyle, and his wife, Sara, Hampton of Eugene and Corey Hampton of Cottage Grove; brother: Kevin Hampton of Cottage Grove; halfsister: Beth Davis of Washington; and stepsister: Linda Ray of Venice, Calif.
A memorial service was held Sunday at First Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove. Inurnment was at Fir Grove cemetery. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Harriet Elizabeth Watson
Harriet Elizabeth Watson, 83, of Cottage Grove, died April 30, 2004 in Oregon City.
She was born in Bartley, Neb., to Hiram and Jane McCord. No date of birth was given. She was a high school graduate.
She married
LeRoy Watson in Grand Island, Neb., Feb. 18, 1940.
She formerly lived in Roseburg. She was a 35-year resident of Cottage Grove.
She was a homemaker and was part owner and operator of Kirks Village Bakery.
She enjoyed sewing and cake decorating.
Survivors include sons: Bob Watson of Haines, Alaska, Butch Watson of Oregon City, Larry Watson of Salem, Jim Watson of Cottage Grove, Elmer Watson of Oceanside, Calif., and Roy Watson of Beaverton; daughters: Diane Burson of Beaverton and Rita Berger of Carmel Valley, Calif.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A service and interment was held May 7 at Fir Grove cemetery in Cottage Grove. Smith-Lund-Mills was in charge of arrangements.
Jayden Alan Sawyer
May 2004-July 2004
Jayden Alan Sawyer of Cottage Grove died July 8 at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene at the age of one month and 15 days from undisclosed causes.
He was born May 23, 2004, to Travis Sawyer and Sabrina Smith. He came to his family as an angel and left an angel.
Survivors include his parents: Travis Sawyer and Sabrina Smith of Cottage Grove; brother: Jaycen Sawyer of Cottage Grove; and sister: Brianna Fields of San Diego, Calif.
A service was not planned. Arrangements are under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the ICI Neonatal Unit at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene.
Cody James Johnson
2000-2004
Cody James Johnson, 3, of Spokane, Wash., died July 17 from injuries sustained in a horse riding accident.
He was born Oct. 19, 2000, in Spokane, Wash., to Bob and Vickie Johnson.
He enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, camping and watching fish. He liked to ride in helicopters and loved motorized vehicles. He was on the go all the time.
He knew people from all over the world because his dad was in the U.S. Air Force.
Survivors include his parents; sister: Stephanie Johnson of Spokane, Wash.; grandparents: Sandy and Tom Johnson of Crowheart, Wyo., and Clete and Ellie Evans of Whitehouse, Texas; great-grandmother: Junie Evans of Redlands, Calif.; great uncle: Richard Wright of Yoncalla, and numerous aunts and uncles.
A service was held at the Johnson Family Ranch in Yoncalla Friday. A private cremation was held under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.

Leo Keechi
1921-2004
Leo Keechi, 83, of Cottage Grove, died July 25 from age-related causes.
He was born June 27, 1921, to Frank and Grace Keechi of Bowden, Okla. He graduated from college and attended two years of graduate school.
He married
Dorothy Ford in Chico, Calif., in 1953.
He formerly lived in Drain and Newberg.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and received a Bronze Star and Silver Star. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He worked as a real estate salesman.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; children: Jennifer, Kathy, Melody and Frank; and eight grandchildren.
No service was planned. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Vernon Black
1921-20043
Vernon Black, 83, a lifetime resident of Cottage Grove, died Aug. 4 of Parkinson's disease.
He was born Feb. 17, 1921, to Wilber and Ardella Black in Patterson, Calif.
He graduated from high school. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Pearl Harbor veteran and involved in the battle at Midway. Arizona Sen. John McCains grandfather was his commanding officer. He received a Silver Star and two air medals for 43 combat missions.
He married
Alberta Cook Oct. 18, 1955.
He worked as a mill worker at Weyerhaeuser Co.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was a member of the Cottage Grove BPOE No. 1904.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law: Doris and Jim Determan of Eugene and nephews: Floyd Black of Lorane and Edward Rambousek of Estacada.
A service was held Saturday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove, followed by interment at Fir Grove cemetery.
