Margaret Potter Johnson
1912-2004
Margaret Potter Johnson, 91, a two-year resident of Cottage Grove, died July 15 from age-related causes.
She was born Nov. 14, 1912, to Ralph and Mary Burgess of Zenia, Calif.
She was married for 50 years to Dale Potter.
She was a former resident of Ferndale, Calif., until 2001 when she moved to Magnolia Gardens in Cottage Grove.
She was a teacher for 26 years.
She was a lifetime member of the California Teachers Association, a member of Humboldt Historical Society and Ferndale Museum. She enjoyed knitting and volunteering at the Ferndale Museum.
Survivors include son and spouse: George and Sylvia Potter of Cottage Grove; daughter and spouse: Marilyn and Gil Dow of Upper Lake, Calif.; six grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
No service was planned. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Leon Van Nortwick
1911-2004
Leon Ber-trand Van Nortwick, 93, formerly of Cottage Grove, died Sept. 20 in New Braunfels, Texas.
He was born on July 11, 1911, in Dallas, Ore., and his family moved to Cottage Grove. He married Edith Irene Easley in 1939.
He was an officer in the Army National Guard and a second lieutenant in the Army during World War II.
In 1949 he won a homestead in Tulelake, Calif., through the Veterans of WWII, and the family lived there 12 years.
He moved to Klamath Falls, where he worked for the Post Office until he retired. He moved to the Oregon Coast and lived there until 1984 when he moved to New Braunfels to be near family.
He loved music and played the piano and organ. He was a carpenter and made many pieces for his children and grandchildren. He loved humor.
He is survived by his daughter: DeAnn Ott of New Braunfels, Texas; a son: Howard (and his wife, Piper) Van Nortwick of Canyon Lake; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith; a son: Harold Dean Van Nortwick; and son-in-law: Arlon "Butch" Ott.
Graveside services were held in Comal cemetery in New Braunfels. Zoeller Funeral Home of New Braunfels, Texas, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to Hope Hospice in New Braunfels, Texas, or to the American Cancer Society.

Lavilla C. Peterson
1903-2004
Lavilla C. Peterson of Cottage Grove died March 13 at the age of 100 from age-related causes.
She was born on May 18, 1903, to Hans and Amelia Dalager in Glenwood, Minn. She lived her entire life in Glenwood, Minn., and moved to Cottage Grove in 2002 to be close to her daughter.
She attended the Normal School for Teaching and was a teacher and homemaker.
She was married to John Peterson, who died in 1988.
She was always concerned about her family and enjoyed family history and reading.
She attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Cottage Grove.
Survivors are daughter and son-in-law: Lila and Tom Creager of Cottage Grove; sons: Robert Peterson of Glenwood, Minn., Hans Peterson of Dallas, Texas, and Ralph Peterson of Glenwood, Minn.; 28 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
A service and interment is scheduled for March 20 at Barsness Lutheran Church in Glenwood, Minn.
Memorial contributions can be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 675 S. Seventh St., in Cottage Grove.

Mary Agnes Giesel
1923-2004
Mary Agnes Giesel, 81, of Dorena died Friday at McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield.
Mrs. Giesel was born May 4, 1923, in Nashua, Mont.
She married Joseph Giesel June 19, 1942. She and her husband moved to Oceanside, Calif., where her husband was stationed at Camp Pendleton. They lived in Oceanside for 35 years before retiring to their home in Dorena, where she lived for the past 22 years.
She was a homemaker and loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She loved gardening, sewing, needlework, cooking, camping, traveling, reading, playing cards, puzzles and helping neighbors.
She is survived by her husband: Joseph Giesel of Dorena; sons: Gerald Giesel and his wife, Kathleen, of Los Banos, Calif.; Ronald Giesel and his wife, Beverly, of Rowland Heights, Calif.; and Michael Giesel and wife, Denise, of Oceanside, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Private memorial services were arranged.
Remembrances may be made to the charity or organization of choice.

Leo Dempsey
1935-2004
Leo Dempsey, 69, a 12-year resident of Cottage Grove, died July 11 of unknown causes.
He was born April 16, 1935, to George and Mae Dempsey in Bardsfork, W. Va.
He married Shirley Miller on March 26, 1955, in Yuma, Ariz.
He was a resident of Duarte, Calif., for many years.
He was a retired general contractor and owned and operated a commercial and residential construction company.
Survivors include his wife: Shirley Miller; sons and spouses: Stephen and Debbie Dempsey and Michael Dempsey, all of Cottage Grove; brother: Lando Dempsey of Yuma, Ariz.; and four grandchildren: Andy, Kelly, Shannon and Courtney.
A private cremation was under the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions May be made to lung or heart associations.

Seth Wilbur Croskey
1986-2004
Seth Wilbur Croskey, who had spent the past five years of his life in Cottage Grove, died Saturday in an automotive accident at the age of 18.
A memorial will be held Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
Croskey was born May 17, 1986, in Mesa, Ariz., to Harold and Brenda (Butterfield) Goings. He was adopted as an infant by his grandparents, John and Doris (Davis) Crosky.
Croskey was a student at the Looking Glass Riverfront School and Career Center in Eugene, a school-to-work program for out-of-school youth between the ages of 14 and 21.
He loved his family, skateboarding, hanging out with friends, being outdoors, fishing and hunting. He loved animals and they loved him. He loved life.
Croskey is survived by his father: Harold Goings, of Florence, Ariz.; his grandparents who adopted him: John and Doris Croskey, of Cottage Grove; his grandparents: Harold and Millie Goings, of Eager, Ariz.; his four sisters: Nicole Newman, of Henderson, Nev., Mindy Croskey, of Grand Rapids, Minn., Patricia Nicholas and Amber Woirhaye, both of Mesa, Ariz.; and his six brothers: Ryan Croskey, of Payson, Ariz., Corey Croskey, of Tucson, Ariz., Michael Goings, Shawn Croskey, Jeremy Croskey and Brett Croskey, all of Mesa.

Dorothy Vermont
1941-2004
Dorothy L. Vermont, 63, of Creswell, died Oct. 16, 2004, of lung cancer.
She was born to Leslie and Erman Anglin on April 25, 1941, in Denver, Colo.
She lived in Canyon Country, Calif., and Newhall, Calif., before moving to the area four years ago.
She worked for Thatcher Glass Co. and was a bartender/waitress. After her retirement she worked for Service Master Janitorial in Eugene.
She enjoyed her roses and gardening, her cats and dogs and taking care of her five grandchildren. She participated in the Cottage Grove Relay for Life.
She is survived by her mother: Leslie Anglin of San Fernando, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law: Robert and Kelly Foreman of Creswell; a sister and brother-in-law: Maxine and Dan Smith of Southern California; grandchildren: Shaun, Cameron, Nicholas, Alexander and Sheniya Foreman, all of Creswell; as well as nieces and nephews and many cousins in Southern California.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Creswell Church of Christ.
Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society Cottage Grove Relay for Life.

Allen Andrew Stroud
1911-2004
Allen Andrew Stroud, a former resident of Cottage Grove, died Friday at the age of 93 from age-related causes.
He was born to John and May (McCaslin) Stroud in Scotland, Ark., on March 16, 1911.
He finished the 12th grade and then served in the U.S. Army.
He moved to Cottage Grove in 1950 where he lived until moving to Eugene in 1998.
He worked as a custodian at Cottage Grove High School and worked for the City of Cottage Grove.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting and bird watching.
He was a member of the Church of Christ on Pennoyer in Cottage Grove.
He received the American defense award and one Bronze Star.
He was preceded in death by his brothers: Willie Stroud, J.C. Stroud, Weldon Stroud, Tillman Stroud, Dewey Stroud and Raymond Stroud.
He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
No service is planned. Arrangements were made through Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart Hospital.

Barbara Jean Horn
1941-2004
Barbara Jean Horn, a 20-year resident of Drain, died Dec. 28 at the age of 63 from ovarian cancer.
She was born to Kenneth and Fredia (Hester) Crow in Bernie, Mo., on Oct. 27. 1941.
She earned an associate degree at Lane Community College.
She worked as a homemaker and a banker at Douglas National Bank.
She enjoyed playing the piano, flower gardening, going to the beach and ocean and spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She was a member of the Drain Church of Christ and the Yoncalla Church of Christ.
She also lived in Medford, Olympia, Wash., and Eugene.
She was preceded in death by her father, Kenneth Crow.
She is survived by her mother: Fredia Marie Peterson of Cottage Grove; her brother: Randy Crow of Brea, Calif.; her sons: Michael Burk of Riverside, Calif.; Todd Tinnes of Drain; Gabe Horn of Boise, Idaho; and Jared Horn of Drain; her daughters: Hester Christensen of Boise, Idaho, and Joya Martini of Veneta; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made to Boise Bible College in Boise, Idaho.
