Dorcas E. Bracken
Newberg resident Dorcas Eileen Bracken died June 7, 2005, at her daughter's home in Dundee. She was 80.
She was born Nov. 1, 1924, to Harry and Adelaide (Hillman) Cleveland in Binghamton, N.Y., where she grew up and attended school. Her mother died when she was 14. She moved to Michigan, where she married Darold Stryffeler. They moved to Oregon and lived first in Newberg and then in the Tillamook area.
She was a nurse's aide with the Red Cross during World War II and worked as a laundry aide while living in Tillamook. She moved to Portland and married Edward Bracken. He preceded her in death in 1987 and she returned to Newberg about 11 years ago. She later lived in Dundee with her daughter, then at Avamere in Newberg for four years, and three months ago returned to her daughter's home.
She enjoyed bingo, casinos, cooking, family gatherings and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed music, especially having a family friend, David, play the guitar for her. She also enjoyed reading and sewing.
Survivors include: sons, Darold Stryffeler of Newberg, Randy Bracken of Newberg and Mike Bracken of Yamhill; daughter Michelle Colton of Dundee; brother George Cleveland of Binghamton; sister Freda Ball of Binghamton; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ed Bracken and Darold Stryffeler; daughter Vivian and eight brothers and sisters.
A funeral service was held June 13 at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pamela Sloper officiating. A concluding service followed at Newberg Friends cemetery.

Doris M. Wise
Newberg native Doris M. Wise died July 15, 2005, at her home in Hillsboro. She was 87.
She was born May 19, 1918, to Martin and Ruby (Etzwiler) Hayman in Newberg. She was raised and educated in Garibaldi. In 1935 she married Theron Wise in Garibaldi. They moved to Lafayette. She lived in Portland from 1942 to 1945 while her husband worked in a shipyard. In 1945, she moved to Rockaway, where she cooked at several restaurants.
In 1957 she moved to Newberg, where she lived until the mid-1990s. She spent the past seven years of her life in Hillsboro.
She enjoyed fishing, traveling, crocheting, planting and cooking.
Survivors include: son Robert of Aloha; daughter Barbara Montgomery of Brooks; brother Gerald Taylor of Heyden, Idaho; sisters, Valeria Kirk of St. Paul and Merie Conway, Betty Jones and Arline Toler, all of Newberg; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery in McMinnville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Oregon Health and Sciences University, care of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128.

Roger Allen Nagel
Roger Allen Nagel of King City died July 9, 2005. He was 69.
He was born May 12, 1936, in Rock Rapids, Iowa, to Richard and Esther (Smedsrud) Nagel. He graduated from high school and joined the Navy for 11 years of service.
Nagel enjoyed shooting pool, fishing, golf and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include: daughters, Carrie Looney of Newberg and Toni Schwartz of Tualatin; brother Jerry Nagel of Sioux Falls, S.D.; son Rich of Sherwood and 12 grandchildren.
A memorial begins at 2 p.m. Thursday at Tigard First Baptist church.

Jon M. Rainforth
Jon Michael Rainforth died July 8, 2005, at a Portland hospital after a lengthy illness. He was 37.
He was born April 26, 1968 to Darrell and Jeanne (Stang) Rainforth in Portland. He grew up in the Milwaukie area. He graduated from Clackamas High School and continued his education at Clackamas Community College, Portland Community College and Portland State University, working toward a degree in counseling and psychology. In 1996 he married Deborah Miller. They later divorced. They had purchased their own business. Following the divorce, he became an insurance salesman. He attended the Milwaukie Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: son Trenton of Portland; parents, Darrell and Jeanne of Milwaukie; brother Jeff of Oregon City; grandmother Hattie Stang of Newberg; nieces, Aubrey and Alyssa; and nephew Chase.
Graveside services were private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg with Pastor Woodly White officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Doernbecher Children Hospital or to a charity of one's choice, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Richard J. Gray
Newberg native Richard 'Dick' J. Gray died of cancer July 14, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 55.
He was born March 13, 1950, to James and Leola (Hoffman) Gray in Newberg. He lived in Newberg most of his life. He worked in and around Yamhill County most of his life for Martin and Wright, Rowell and Wickersham, The Burch's and BRIX Paving of Tualatin. He married Janet Dunkin on Feb. 20, 1974, in Vancouver, Wash. He served in the Marines.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting with family and friends. His hobbies were woodworking and gardening.
Survivors include: wife Janet of Newberg; sons, Roger and Daryl of Newberg; daughters, Heidi of Newberg; a son from a previous marriage, Tony; a daughter from a previous marriage, Christin; mother Leola Meyers of West Linn; brothers, Bob of Lake Oswego and Ron of Carlton; sisters, Joyce Riley of Lafayette, Sharon Marsh of Astoria and Cathy Lovell of West Linn; grandchildren, Jessica, Ryan and Marie; and nine nephews and nine nieces.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the VFW Hall in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice, care of Macy and Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128.

Mary L. Morris
Mary Louise Morris died July 11, 2005, at her home in Dundee. She was 78.
She was born Aug. 23, 1926, to George and Nina Blaise in Shelbyville, Mo. She married Archie Morris on July 17, 1970, in Columbia, Mo. They moved to Newberg in 1983 and purchased a service station at the corner of First and Main streets. They operated the Morris Texaco service station together for 21 years.
She enjoyed helping out at the station, meeting people, especially customers, and being a part of the Newberg business community. The family said the service station was known for its extra friendly service and that people counted on them to be there.
Survivors include: husband Archie of Dundee; daughters, Beverly Waggener of Pueblo, Colo., and Debbie Morris of Columbia, Mo.; sisters, Helen Ramsey of Arizona and Margaret Ratliff of Shelbina, Mich.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four brothers.
No services are being held per the family's request.

Rachel M. Powlison
Rachel Mae Powlison of Hubbard died June 29, 2005, from injuries she received in an automobile accident in California. She was 10.
She was born Aug. 18, 1994, to Dale and Rhoda Powlison in Irvine, Calif. She moved with her family from California to Hubbard, where the family resided since 1996. She was a member of New Life Foursquare Church in Canby and helped in the church's Little Lambs preschool program. She was a jazz dancer and enjoyed basketball, crafts and wakeboarding.
Survivors are: parents Dale and Rhoda of Hubbard; brothers, Micah and Symon of Hubbard; grandparents, Robert and Reta Peters of Dundee and Howard and Doris Powlison of Portland; and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at New Life Foursquare Church. Burial will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to New Life Foursquare Church, 2350 S.E. Territorial Road, Canby OR 97013.

Rocky D. Hartman
Rocky Douglas Hartman died July 2, 2005, of kidney, liver and lung failure at the Veterans Hospital in Portland. He was 52.
He was born Sept. 4, 1953, to Larry and Ivalou (Hawley) Hartman in Omaha, Neb. At 2, he moved with his family to Oregon. He attended schools in Brookings and Roseburg. He entered the Army at an early age, continuing his education in the military, becoming a military medic and earning degrees in diesel mechanics and electronics. He served in the Army for six years, including one tour in Vietnam.
Survivors include: wife, Sandy of Salem; daughter Cherie of Salem; son Justin Osborn of Madras; parents Larry and Ivalou Hartman of Newberg; sister Teresa Hutchens of Carlton; brother Ted of Salem; nephew Michael Hartman of Newberg; niece Cassidy Howard of Iowa; nephews, Trever and Tyler Hutchens of Carlton and niece Tiffeny Hutchens of Carlton.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
A graveside service was held Thursday at the Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Hartman family in Newberg.

Lois N. Roberts
Lois Natalia Roberts died July 9, 2005, in Canby. She was 95.
She was born May 26, 1910, to F.J. and May Buroker in Waitsburg, Wash. Her family lived near Enterprise for five years before moving to the Liberal area. She graduated from Molalla High School in 1928. After attending Oregon Normal School (now Western Oregon University), she taught for four years.
On July 10, 1936, she married Edward Roberts in Beavercreek. She returned to teaching when the youngest of her four children entered the first grade. She taught at Stafford Elementary School for 20 years, from 1949 to 1969. She was a member of Oregon City First Presbyterian Church since 1953.
Her husband was a grounds keeper at the Oregon City Golf Course. They purchased farmland near the golf course, built a home and raised blackcaps. She lived there until declining health forced her to move in June 2005 to Canby.
Survivors include: son Lawrence of Portland; daughters, Patricia Jones of Dundee and Margaret Timm of Silverton; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her second son, Kenneth, who was killed in March 1969 while on Naval Air Combat training maneuvers after serving two tours of duty in Vietnam.
A memorial service for Lois Roberts was held July 13 at First Presbyterian Church of Oregon City.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Oregon or to a charity of choice.

Daniel J. Amaral
Daniel James Amaral died July 9, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 20.
He was born Nov. 10, 1984, to Archie and Karin (Boyer) Amaral in Honolulu, Hawaii. He left the island of Oahu with his family when he was an infant to live in Tennessee, then Washington before settling in Oregon. He graduated from Newberg High School, where he enjoyed playing football. He was attending Lane Community College at the time of his death.
He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, playing video games and skim boarding on beaches near Lincoln City.
Survivors include: father Archie Amaral of Newberg; brothers, Anthony and Nick of Hawaii; and sisters, Ashley and Danielle.
Viewing and visitation hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. July 20 at Willamette National cemetery in Portland with Pastor David Case officiating.

Margaret Rita Braden
Margaret Rita Braden of Newberg died July 8, 2005. She was 88.
She was born Sept. 3, 1916, in Denver to Adolph and Mary Hollenbeck. She graduated from Arthur (Nebraska) High School in 1937 after moving from home. She graduated from the Chicago School of Nursing and worked as a nurse in Sutherland, Neb. Afterwards she returned back to Arthur and married Kenneth Braden.
She moved in with her family at Tualatin in 1954, spent several years in Boise cooking at a Bible college. She retired in Newberg.
Survivors include: daughters, Janice Waldo, Sharron Hindman, Tamara Cornelsen and Ginger Hatzenbuehler; sister Lois Kennedy of Arvada, Colo.; brother Joe McMillan Jr. of Ogallala, Neb.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Her husband preceded her in death in January 2001.
A memorial service is today (Saturday) at Wymore Good Samaritan Center in Wymore, Neb.
