Steven M. Miller
Steven Mark Miller died Sept. 23, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 36.
He was born Dec. 30, 1968, to Cryil and Sandra (Williams) Miller in Lebanon. He moved to the Bend area at 11 months of age. He attended elementary in the Redmond School District and graduated from Hermiston High School in 1986. He attended George Fox College (now George Fox University) and earned a degree in 1991.
He worked in a steel mill and then returned to school to become a licensed massage therapist. He worked as a message therapist and as an aide.
He held lead roles in several plays. He was a member of Willowbrook Church in Sherwood.
Survivors include: parents, Cy Miller of Brownsville and Sandra Racette of Woodburn; son Garrett of Newberg; brothers, Randy of Sweet Home and William Palmtag of Tacoma; sisters, Cheryl King and Debra Martin, both of Marcola; grandmother Ruth Wright of Independence; companion, Shanna Arnold of Newberg; and numerous uncles and aunts.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Pastor Robert Vaughn officiating. Another service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central Valley Church in Halsey with Pastor Eric Harless officiating. Committal will be at Alford cemetery in Harrisburg.
Memorial contributions may be made to Epilepsy Foundation of Oregon, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Bertha M. McWilliams
Former Newberg resident Bertha Marie McWilliams died Sept. 28, 2005, at Tuality Community Hospital. She was 77.
She was born April 25, 1928, to Alonzo and Mackey (Hurst) Pearl. She spent her childhood in Oklahoma. She married Delmar McWilliams on May 10, 1947, in Mena, Ark. She lived in Texas and later moved to Oregon. She and her husband had a farm in West Union. She retired in Newberg, where she lived for more than 20 years.
She enjoyed sewing, crafts and the color purple. Her family said she had a 'gentle soul.'
Survivors include: sons, Jerry of Chester, Md., and Delmar of Cornelius; daughters, Nancy Antoine of Milwaukie, Judy Warnock of Lake Oswego, Donna McWilliams of Hillsboro, Peggy Barry of Enumclaw, Wash., Jane McWilliams-Holcombe of Oregon City and Karen McWilliams-Jones of Hillsboro; sister Jannie Barby of Hillsboro; 19 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Delmar and five brothers and sisters.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park in McMinnville with the Rev. John Mahaffy officiating.

Francis L. Patterson
Francis Lavern Patterson of Dayton died Sept. 19, 2005, in Dayton. He was 78.
He was born April 17, 1927. He moved to Oregon in 1946. He worked for Alderman Farms for many years until purchasing a farm of his own in 1958; he operated it until 1990. He served as Navy CB during World War II. He volunteered as a Cub Scout master and with the fire department. He also served on the rural fire board. He was an honorary FFA member.
Survivors include: wife Norma of Dayton; son, Randall of Dayton; brothers, Charles of Waldport and Elton of Philomouth; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Sept. 24 at Pioneer Evangelical Church in Dayton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scott Patterson Funeral Fund at any US Bank.

Dorsie G. Olds Jr.
Dorsie G. Olds Jr. of Tigard died Sept. 22, 2005, at the King City Rehabilitation Center. He was 72.
He was born May 18, 1933, to Dorsie and Jean (Bobell) Olds in Middleton. He graduated from Sherwood High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He worked as a machine tender at the Alpenrose Dairy.
He married his wife, Elizabeth, on May 18, 1977.
He was a member of VFW and Eagles. He was a commander with the American Legion. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include: wife Elizabeth; son Donald of Newberg; daughters, Jean Olds of Tigard and Linda Tannehill of Indiana; sister Phyllis Jarrell of Forest Grove; brothers, Paul of Hillsboro and Larry of Newberg; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Dorothy England and brother Donald.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 9 at the American Legion #158, 8635 S.W. Scoffins Road, Tigard.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion #158.

Anthony L. Cooke
Anthony 'Tony' Lee Cooke died Sept. 16, 2005, in Newberg. He was 34.
He was born March 22, 1971, to Arney and Linda (Peters) Cooke in Newberg. He moved with his family to Alaska. At age 9 he returned to Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School, where he was a wrestler and ran track. He worked at Tech Fab in Gresham for several years. He worked as a machinist in Grants Pass, then at Aluminum Welding. He later fought wildland fires in Idaho and Montana with the U.S. Department of Forestry. He lived in Grants Pass for 12 years also holding other odd jobs and visiting Newberg as time allowed. He was living with his grandparents at the time of his death.
He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, trapping and riding snowmobiles. He helped build a log cabin. He also panned for gold near Grants Pass.
Survivors include: father Arney of Newberg; mother Linda Warren of Phoenix, Ariz.; son Tristan Batty-Cooke of Grants Pass; stepfather Art Phillips of Phoenix, Ariz., ; stepmother Debra Cooke of Newberg; brother Donald of Newberg; stepbrother Dustin Phillips of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Susan Holland; stepsisters, Angela Antone of Newberg and Amanda Antone of Milwaukie; grandparents, Donald and Doris Cooke of Newberg, Frances Gagnon of Phoenix, Ariz., and Vera Peters of Newberg; and a number of cousins, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by brother Clint in October 2004.
A memorial service was held Thursday at the family home in Newberg.

Larry E. Eddens
Former Newberg resident Larry Edward Eddens died of cancer Sept. 16, 2005. He was 63.
He was born Jan. 20, 1942, to Roy and Evelyn (Hodges) Eddens in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School. He served four years in the Navy and worked for Portland General Electric for 34 years. He lived in Newberg until 1992.
He married Myrtle Sparks in January 1993.
His family said he will be remembered as a fun-loving and energetic 'young' man.
Survivors include: wife Myrtle; mother Evelyn; sister Marilyn Fergus of Newberg; daughters, Alicia Disney and Dawne King, both of Portland; five grandchildren; two stepdaughters and five step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by father Roy.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Charles R. Thomson
Charles Ronald Thomson died Sept. 18, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 81.
He was born April 7, 1924, to Ralph and Augusta (Metzger) Thomson in Aberdeen, Wash.
Survivors include: Joann Thomson of Canby; sons, Todd Pearson of Alburn, Wash., Ron Thomson of Redmond, Jon Pearson of Talent and Jeff Pearson of Yamhill; daughters, Nancy Gram of Sandy, Tamara Forrester and Theresa Rothwieler of Keizer, and Barbara Thomson of Canby; brother Ralph of Puyallup, Wash.; sister Alice Mintz of Highland, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Paul A. Thornton
Paul Audette Thornton died Sept. 19, 2005. He was 68.
He was born June 16, 1937, on the Cheyenne Indian Reservation in South Dakota. At age 9 he moved with his family to Oklahoma. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He retired after 34 years with the Amoco Oil Company in Tulsa, Okla. In 1994 he and his wife, Nedra, moved to Tualatin and to the Newberg area two years ago.
He was a member of the Washington County Chapter of Master Gardeners. He volunteered at church and with the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include: wife Nedra; sons, Paul Jr. of Tulsa and Terrance of Ballwin, Mo.; sister Cheri Franklin of Big Bear, Calif.; and grandchildren, Zachary and Trevor.
He was preceded in death by daughter Katherine Thornton-Johnson and brother Larry.
A memorial mass was held Sept. 22 in St. Francis Catholic Church in Sherwood. A memorial service will be held at a later date at St. Peter and St. Paul Catholic churches.

Charles R. Thomson
Charles Ronald Thomson died Sept. 18, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 81.
He was born April 7, 1924, to Ralph and Augusta (Metzger) Thomson in Aberdeen, Wash.

Clelas W. Hutchens-Wallace
Newberg native Clelas W. Wallace died of complications of diabetes on Sept. 16, 2005, in her home in Oakview, Calif. She was 80.
She was born Feb. 25, 1925, to Alfred and Leona Hutchens in Newberg, where she attended grade school and high school. She attended Benki Walker Business College in Portland. During World War II she was a nurse's aid and a United Service Organization (USO) hostess in Portland.
She worked for many years as a retail clerk and retired from the Retail Clerks Union. In the mid-1980s she moved to Venture, Calif., where she met and in 1989 married Lovell Wallace.
She was a member of the Emblem Club of the Ventura Elks 1430. She also volunteered at the Salvation Army.
She enjoyed music, gardening and spending time with family.
Survivors include: husband Lovell; son Timothy Landaur of Newberg; brothers, Marvin Hutchens of Newberg and Leslie Hutchens of McMinnville; sisters, Laurel Spencer and Lavene Myers of Carlton; grandchildren, Leonard, Coty and Nettie; four great-grandchildren; stepsons, Gerald and Darrell; stepdaughter Linda; five step-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by daughter Sandra Paolo, her parents and brother Charles Hutchens.
A celebration of life potluck will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the American Legion in Carlton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diabetes Association.

Walter G. Adams
Newberg resident Walter G. Adams died of a heart attack on Sept. 7, 2005, in Newberg. He was 78.
He was born Dec. 27, 1926, to Charles and Thelma (Crow) Adams in Lincoln, Neb. His father was a typesetter at The Newberg Graphic in the 1950s and 1960s. He graduated from McMinnville High School in 1945. He served in the Navy in the Pacific during World War II. He attended college in Los Angeles after the war.
He married Elaine Jackson on April 5, 1952. She preceded him in death in January 2000.
He spent his early career as an accountant, working several years with R-J Reynolds. He later owned ARCO service stations in the Beaverton and Aloha areas. He lived more than 40 years in the Beaverton area, moving to Newberg in 1997.
He was a member of the American Legion, National Rifle Association and the association of his former World War II shipmates of the USS Granville. He was an avid hunter, angler, card player and enjoyed spending time with family.
Survivors include: son Thomas of Eugene; brother Carl of Newberg; granddaughters Jennifer, Shelley and Julie Adams; three nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by sister Marjorie of Newberg in March 2005.
He was cremated and his remains will be dispersed at sea near Depoe Bay by Coast Guard crews.
A celebration of his life will be at 1 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Chehalem Senior Center.
