Ralph R. Parker
Newberg native Ralph Russell Parker died Sept. 6, 2005, in Portland. He was 76.
He was born March 17, 1929, to Russel and Gwen (Stannard) Parker in Newberg, where he was educated. He served in the Navy. He worked as a teacher for Sweet Home and Centennial high schools. He married Melva Baldwin on April 11, 1952. She preceded him in death in May 1999. He married Nita Super on Feb. 14, 2000. He was living in The Dalles at the time of his death.
Survivors include: wife Nita Parker of The Dalles; sister Margaret Dixon of Tigard; daughter Melinda Sullivan of Portland; sons, Douglas of Salem, Michael of Ashland and James of Gresham; stepdaughters, Taunya McKee of Gresham and Teal Hamilton if Tucson, Ariz.; stepsons, Scott Super of Milwaukie and Kevin Super of Lynchburg, Va.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at The Village in Gresham.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Alfred M. Block
Alfred M. Block of Newberg died Sept. 10, 2005, at the Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Newberg. He was 85.
He was born March 6, 1920, to Emile and Irma (Metzger) Block in Buffalo, N.Y., where he was educated and attended two years of college. He was in the Army Air Force from 1941 to 1945 during World War II; he was stationed in New Guinea. From 1945 to 1950 he lived in Chicago, where he graduated from Chicago Teacher's College in Education. He also earned a masters degree in counseling.
He moved to Paris for one year. He met his wife there, and they married on Dec. 23, 1950.
He returned to Illinois, where he taught elementary school, and stayed there until 1972. He moved to McMinnville, where he and his wife ran a delicatessen called Fred's Fast Foods. In 1972 he and his wife moved to Newberg.
He enjoyed reading. He belonged to the VFW in Newberg.
Survivors include: wife Therese of Newberg; sons, Daniel of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Frederick of Indianapolis and Philip of Vancouver, Wash.; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
No service is being held.

Chester L. Perkins
Chester Lee Perkins died of lung cancer on Sept. 2, 2005. He was 76.
He was born April 7, 1929, to Charles and Lisa (Page) Perkins in Smiths Grove, Ky. He grew up and attended school in Smiths Grove and spent most of his life there. He had four children by his first wife, Jean Bradley Perkins, who preceded him in death in 1964. On July 11, 1978, he married Ila Marie Wills in Indianapolis, Ind., and they moved to Oregon, settling in Newberg. He worked at Gerber Legendary Blades for 15 years before retiring.
He was a member of the Newberg Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed gardening, camping, fishing and spending time outdoors. His family said he will be remembered for his contagious laugh and glowing smile.
Survivors include: wife Ila of Salem; sons, Roger and Mike of Kentucky; daughters, Brenda Black and Pam Kyle, both of Kentucky; grandchildren, Mickey, Jessica and Natasha; six stepchildren and 16 step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother David and sister Reba.
A funeral service was held Sept. 6 at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Ed Nichols officiating. Committal was private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

W. Neil Miller
W. Neil Miller died Sept. 7, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. He was 83.
He was born June 10, 1922, to William and Amy (Ford) Miller in Bashaw, Alberta, Canada. At a young age he moved to Whittier, Calif., where he graduated from Whittier High School. He held several different jobs before entering the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942. During his World War II service he helped assemble gliders for the D-Day invasion and was a driver for the 'Red Ball Express.' He became a U.S. citizen in June 1944, while he was abroad in the military service in England.
After his discharge he returned to the Whittier area and went to barber college. After, he opened a barber shop in Corvina.
On Dec. 27, 1959, he married Ivon Long in West Corvina, Calif. Early in 1961 the couple moved to Newberg. He opened a barber shop at the Portland Air Base. Before retiring in 1978, he would open barber shops in Newberg and Dundee.
Survivors include: wife Ivon Miller, a city councilor for Dundee; sons, Todd of Dundee and Dennis of Enid, Okla.; daughter Pamela McCarty of Anaconda, Mont.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Valorie Foote.
At the request of the family there are no services scheduled.

Clara M. Ruhlin
Newberg resident Clara Marie Ruhlin died Sept. 1, 2005. She was 87.
She was born July 18, 1918, in Progress. She married Conrad Ruhlin in 1945. He preceded her in death in 2000. She lived in Portland and Oregon City before moving to Newberg, where she stayed 10 years. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Portland Swiss Inc., the Swiss Ladies Club and the Newberg First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: daughters, Margaret Ruhlin and Barbara Hales; brothers, Albert and Herbert Kehrli; sisters, Emma Gregory and Hulda LeGro; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg First Presbyterian, 501 Mission Drive.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Steve L. Bastian
Steve L. Bastian died Nov. 9, 2005, at his home in Newberg. He was 52.
He was born Oct. 8, 1953, to Kenneth and Ruth Bastian in McMinnville. He graduated from high school in 1971 and served in the Navy from 1972 to 1976. He worked as a machinist. He spent the past 25 years in Newberg.
Survivors include: his parents; brothers, K.C. and J. Pierre; sister Charlotte Pederson; and nieces and nephews, Jessica, Audrey and Ross Pederson and Darrall and Anthony Bastian.
Cremation and memorial services will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Louis Allen Hamner
Newberg native Louis Allen Hamner died of cancer Nov. 2, 2005, at a hospital in Heppner. He was 62.
He was born April 23, 1943, to Leonard and Emma (Denyer) Hamner in Newberg. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1961. He graduated from Oregon State University with a bachelor's degree in pharmacy and a master's degree in education. He received his pharmacist's license in 1966 and worked at various pharmacies. In 1971, he traveled to Australia, where for 18 months he taught at Wellington High School in New South Wales. After returning to the United States, he worked in various pharmacies in Oregon until he was hired by Murray Drugs Inc. of Heppner to work at Murray's Condon Pharmacy in Condon.
He held many civic posts at the city of Condon, including as a member of the budget committee and as city councilor. He served on the South Gilliam County Health District Board for more than 10 years and was a member of the Gilliam 9-1-1 Board for 16 years.
He married Sharon Rondeau on Aug. 5, 1978, and adopted her two daughters.
He was a member of the Elks and the Masons. He enjoyed bird-watching, reading, classical music, classical cars, Oregon State University sports and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include: wife Sharon of Condon; daughters, Annette Martinez of Woodburn and Kimberly Ositis of Shoreline, Wash.; four grandchildren; sister Lois Holmes of Redmond; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held Nov. 11 at the Condon United Church of Christ.

Vincent F. Hoffarth
Vincent Frank Hoffarth died of cancer on Nov. 6, 2005. He was 58.
He was born Oct. 27, 1947, to Vincent and Anna Mary Hoffarth in Esmond, N.D. He was the youngest of 16 children.
After the death of his parents, he moved to Portland, where he married Jean Barrett in 1974. When he lived in Portland, and later in Yamhill, he ran several businesses and purchased a farm in Yamhill where he built his dream home, doing most of the work himself.
In recent years, he enjoyed working on his farm in Yamhill and running a nightclub with his sons. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. His family said he was a devout Catholic.
Survivors include: his wife Jean; sons, Vincent of Canby and Barrett of Yamhill; four grandchildren; sisters, Anna Mary, Helen, Regina, Bernadine, Sophie, Stella, Rosie and Nadine.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Angeline, Min, Delores, Vincent, Isabelle, Lydia and James.
A rosary will be at 7 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road. Viewing and visitation will be held at the chapel from 9 a.m. today until the service. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John Catholic Church in Yamhill.

Daryl D. McFall
Former Newberg resident Daryl Dean McFall died Oct. 11, 2005, at a Portland hospital. He was 73.
He was born Sept. 11, 1932, to Roy and Effie McFall in Osh Kosh, Neb. He moved with his family to Newberg in 1938. He graduated from Newberg High School and was inducted into the Army in 1952. He trained as a member of the military police. He served in Korea. He married Alyce Johnson in 1951. He worked most of his life selling cars.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting for deer and elk.
Survivors include: wife Alyce; daughters, Vicki Galvin of Albuquerque, N.M., Erin McFall of Vancouver, Wash., and Dana Brown of Portland; son Chris of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Doris Koch of Tigard; brother Lloyd of Sherwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Willard; sisters, Bonnie McHale, Ruth McFall and Jean McBride; and granddaughter Jordan Marshall.
Services were held in Vancouver.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society.

Toinie M. Ulvi
Newberg resident Toinie Maria Ulvi died of congestive heart failure Oct. 31, 2005, in Newberg. She was 91.
She was born Oct. 20, 1914, to Eric and Kaisa (Nissila) Raisanen in Cloquet, Minn. She graduated from high school there and worked as a maid. She married Laurie Ulvi on Nov. 21, 1936, in Duluth, Minn. They ran a dairy farm from 1936 to 1947 in Cloquet area. They moved to Longview, Wash., in 1947. It was the first of several moves back and forth from Washington to Longview. They settled in Longview, staying from 1952 to 1959. The moved to Portland in 1960.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1980. After, she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. She remained in her home until 1988, when she moved to her daughter's home in Dundee, where she stayed eight years. From 1996 to 2001, she resided in several foster care homes in Newberg. She spent her final four years living in the Chehalem Care Center.
Her family described her as a hardworking woman. She attended church and Bible classes throughout her life. She read the Bible daily. She was Lutheran. She collected cookbooks and recipes, poems and cartoons.
Survivors include: daughters, Judi Spangenberg of Longview, Elaine Glud of Dundee and Peggy Nicholas of Fort Collins, Colo.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Eino, Art, Andrew and John Raisanen; and sister Ailie Klemo.
A memorial service was held Nov. 5 at Skyline Memorial in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 301 S. River St., Newberg.
