Aaron Bowlby
Lifetime Newberg resident Aaron Bowlby died of natural causes Oct. 21, 2005, at Meridian Park Hospital in Tualatin. He was 23.
He was born Dec. 1, 1981, to Frank and Janis (Ball) Bowlby in Portland. He graduated in 2000 from Newberg High School, where he was the king of the senior prom. He was an admissions adviser for American Intercontinental University. He was a member at Zion Lutheran Church.
He enjoyed playing Texas hold-'em poker and singing karaoke.
Survivors include: mother Janis Bowlby of Newberg; brother Andy of Newberg; sister Lindsay Hayden of Newberg; grandparents, Evelyn Bowlby of Portland and Charles and Charleen Ball of King City; and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank, in 2000.
A service was held Oct. 25 at Zion Lutheran Church. Burial was in Idlewilde cemetery in Hood River.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Fire Department's Toy and Joy program.

Doris M. Carlson
Newberg resident Doris May Carlson died Oct. 23, 2005, at Friendsview Retirement Community. She was 76.
She was born Aug. 17, 1929, to Cloyd and Mary (Kerr) Knepp in Pottstown, Penn. She graduated from Boyertown High School in Pennsylvania. She graduated from Reading Nursing School. In 1954 she moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where she married Lorenz Carlson Jr. They lived there 25 years.
In 1979 she moved to Newberg, where she worked for Newberg Community Hospital, and retired in 1988. She traveled to Africa for a one-year mission and returned to Newberg, where she has since resided. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Newberg.
She enjoyed entertaining in her home, playing piano and singing to those in local retirement homes. She also enjoyed gardening and eventually attained the title of Master Gardener. She enjoyed the Oregon Coast and camping in Pacific City.
Survivors include: son David of Seattle; daughters, Ruth Carlson of Newberg; Dawn Hemenway of Shawnee, Kan., and Elizabeth Carlson of Tigard; brothers, Clarence and Dale Knepp of Gilbertsville, Penn., and Paul Knepp of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; sisters, Anna Menzel and Sara Knepp of Scio; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by brothers, Bryon, Fred and Harold.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 600 E. Columbia Drive, with Pastor John Mahaffy officiating.

Richard M. Twenge
Newberg resident Richard 'Dick' M. Twenge died Oct. 16, 2005. He was 78.
He was born March 22, 1927, to Loella Besler and Ole Twenge in Herman, Minn. After brief stays in Barnesville, Minn., and Roundup, Mont., the Twenge family moved to Newberg in July 1936. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1945. He was NHS' first four-sport varsity letterman in football, basketball, baseball and track. He was unanimously voted all-conference after leading Newberg to four league championships in football.
He enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard the light cruiser Duluth, stationed in the Pacific arena. Upon discharge in 1946, after receiving a full football scholarship at Oregon State College (now Oregon State University).
On June 13, 1948, he married Virginia Rothrock at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
After graduation from OSU in 1950, he was hired as a teacher and head football coach at Tigard High School. In 1951, he returned to Corvallis as head football coach at Corvallis High. In 1954 he hired as freshman coach for the Beavers and his college coaching career continued under Beaver coach 'Tommy' Prothro from 1955 to 1960.
He left coaching in March 1960 to become a life insurance salesman. He served on the board of directors for the Corvallis Country Club and the OSU Educational Foundation. He was a charter member of the Presidents Club at Oregon State. He was a past president of the Oregon Life Underwriters Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gambling and poker.
Survivors include: wife Virginia; daughters, Robyn Robinson of Salem and Kathy Walker of Bellingham, Wash.; son Jake of Beaverton; grandchildren, Tricia Mouille, Terri Robinson, Tracy Carr and Heather Walker; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Lois Lackey and Mary Mueller; and brothers Mike and Jack.
A celebration of life will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Oct. 28 at Sherwood Elks Club, 22770 S.W. Elwert Road. Private internment is at Willamette National cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Vets or the Oregon State University Foundation.

Ernest W. Leffler
Longtime Newberg area resident Ernest W. Leffler died Oct. 18, 2005, at a Tualatin hospital. He was 91.
He was born Oct. 25, 1913, to Otto and Anna (Gardner) Leffler in the family farmhouse between Newberg and Gaston off North Valley Road. He attended Lakewood Grade School and graduated from Newberg High School. He attended the University of Oregon and took over the family farm. He raised dairy cows, grew crops and raised thoroughbred racehorses.
He married Evelyn Macartey in 1953 and they made their home on the farm. She preceded him in death in 1989. He moved to a home on Highway 240 in 1968 and married June Dunsten in 1994. They made their home in King City. She preceded him in death in November 2003.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing, took flying lessons and enjoyed playing the fiddle.
Survivors include: daughters, Lynne Hayon of Tarzana, Calif., and Susan Macartey of Santa Barbara, Calif.; son Richard Macartey of Troutdale; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. George Hemingway of St. Michael's Episcopal Church officiating. Chapel viewing and visitation will be there starting at 9 a.m. that day. A committal service with vault interment will follow the service at Noble Pioneer cemetery in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Regina K. Lutze
Newberg resident Regina Katherine Lutze died Oct. 17, 2005, at a Newberg care facility. She was 96.
She was born Jan. 16, 1909, to Rudolph and Florence (Biddlecomb) Stellflug in Emmons, N.D. She lived most of her life in North Dakota and South Dakota. On Nov. 23, 1925, she married Fred Lutze in Mound City, S.D. He preceded her in death in 1951. In 1960, she moved to Newberg. She worked in a drapery factory until she retired in 1975. Her family said she was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Survivors include: sons, Lawrence of McMinnville, Al of Dundee and Fred of Biggs, Calif.; daughter Lillian Reiger of Salem; sisters, Margaret Walton of Dundee and Lizzie Harrison of South Dakota; 23 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by: sons, Louis, Phillip and Robert; daughters, Phyllis McCool and Helen Backhaus; four brothers and one sister.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Alma R. Baker
Former Newberg resident Alma Rose Baker died Oct. 16, 2005, in Eugene. She was 89.
She was born May 3, 1916, to Walter and Ella Foster in Entiat, Wash. Her parents died within months of each other when she was 13. A teacher helped find her a job as a domestic working for a wealthy family.
At 18 she began attending Portland Bible Institute. She married Ernest Baker on Sept. 29, 1935. They began a lifelong partnership in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. She was ordained with her husband in 1941. They served in churches in Pennsylvania, Washington and Hawaii and helped start churches in neighboring towns. She served for more than 30 years as president for Nazarene Missions International for the Washington Pacific District and later the Hawaii Pacific District.
She worked retouching photos and as an airbrush artist. She enjoyed painting and creating dried flower arrangements for her home.
Survivors include: daughters, Emily and Judith; son Ralph; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Ernest; brothers, Clark Foster, Walter Foster and Cameron Foster; sisters, Nellie Bisset, Grace Wightman, Lois Britton and Maude English.
A memorial service was held Oct. 20 at Attrell's Newberg funeral Chapel. Burial was at Noble cemetery.

Maxine M. Rasmussen
Former St. Paul resident Maxine Marie Rasmussen died Oct. 13, 2005, at a Canby assisted-living facility. She was 84.
She was born Dec. 8, 1920, to John and Emma (Andersen) Taylor in Blair, Neb. She received her education at Rose Hill School in Blair. On Feb. 14, 1941, she married John Rasmussen in Blair. The couple started a family in Blair. She helped with the dairy farm. In 1955, the family moved to Roy, Wash., and ran a dairy farm. They stayed there until 1959, when they relocated to St. Paul, where they purchased a dairy farm. The couple operated the farm and in 1963 her husband organized and founded Ranch Automation. She was the bookkeeper for both operations. Her husband preceded her in death in April 1989.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg, where she was active in the women's group. She volunteered for many church activities. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and was a Portland Trail Blazers fan.
Survivors include: sons Marlin of St. Paul and Norman of Albany; daughters, Karen Meuchel of Keizer and Linda Wood of Sisters; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by six brothers, two sisters and one grandchild.
A memorial service was held Oct. 17 at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg with Pastor Steve Estrem officiating. Committal was private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Chris L. Lynch
Newberg resident Chris Lucien Lynch died Oct. 10, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 35.
He was born March 10, 1970, to Richard and Beatrix (Mattalia) Lynch in New York City. He attended school in Los Angeles, where he graduated from Palisade High School in 1987. He attended the University of California - Los Angeles, San Diego Community College and Santa Monica Community College for several years. He lived with his parents in Oregon off and on through the years. He relocated to Newberg in 2002.
He was an avid sports photographer and an actor. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. He enjoyed rock climbing, diving, snowboarding and skateboarding, surfing, riding horses, deep-sea fishing, mountain climbing and whitewater rafting.
Survivors include: father Richard of Yucca Valley, Calif.; mother, Beatrix Newman of Newberg; stepfather, Matt Newman of Newberg; step-grandfather and step-grandmother Albert and Elyane Parson of Newberg; step-grandfather Everett Newman of Sylmar, Calif.; brother, Peter Newman of Newberg; sisters, Amanda and Angelique Newman, both of Newberg; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A funeral mass was held Oct. 14 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg. Committal was private.

Betty J. Clark
Betty Jeanne Clark died Oct. 10, 2005, at her home in Newberg. She was 80.
She was born May 24, 1925, to Walter and Elizabeth (Doolin) Bening in Alameda, Calif. She attended school in San Francisco, graduating from Mission High School. She worked for a short time at a nightclub, taking and selling photographs. She later started in secretarial work and met her future husband in an Oakland office. On Nov. 2, 1955, she married Luther Clark in Salinas, Calif. She was involved in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, as well as with her son's swim team. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in California.
The couple lived in Bend for four years, starting in 1971 when her husband retired. They moved to Days Creek. In 1989, they moved to Newberg, where she has since resided. Her husband preceded her in death in October 1995.
After his death, she started working as a part-time secretary at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel and at Chehalem Valley Bus Service. She volunteered for the park district in the concession stand at Jaquith Park and as a school monitor at middle school basketball games.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, sewing, making dolls, gardening, arranging dried flowers, photography, reading and perusing the Internet.
Survivors include: daughter Barbara Brown of Newberg; sons, Robert of Yakima and Ronald of Austin, Texas; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Viewing and visitation will begin at 8 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. today at the chapel with Chaplain William Larson officiating. Committal will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chehalem Valley Senior Citizen Council, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Nicolas A. Carter
Nicolas Allen 'Cole' Carter died during birth on Oct. 5, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital.
He was the son of Tony and Samantha (Church) Carter of Newberg.
Survivors include: grandparents, R.E. and Patricia Church of Newberg, Carol and Mike Olson of Forest Grove and Bruce and Amy Carter of Moscow, Idaho; great-grandparents, Buster Wennberg of Newberg, Earl and LuVerne Apple of Dundee, Chuck and Carol Carter of Moscow and Don and Janis Olson of Tillamook; aunts and uncles, David and Amanda Carter of Forest Grove, Theresa and Joe Olson of Forest Grove, and Nick Shook and Abby Shook, both of Moscow.
A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the United Methodist Church, 1726 Cedar St., Forest Grove, with the Rev. Dick Krull officiating. A reception will follow at the church. A private burial will be held that day at Finley-Sunset Hill cemetery in Portland.
Memorial donations may be made to the Toy-n-Joy funds of either the Newberg or Forest Grove fire departments.
