James Richard Henry Sr.
James Richard Henry Sr. died Oct. 3, 2005, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 67.
He was born June 18, 1938, to Roy and Catherine (Durbin) Henry in New Castle, Ind. The family made many moves while he was a youth. He received his education in schools in Washington, Idaho and Tennessee, before moving to Oregon in 1955. In 1959, he married Savanna Hymer in Vancouver, Wash., and the couple made their home in the Newberg area.
He worked at various jobs, including Protein Products in Newberg and American Pipe in Portland, and as a surveyor at the Bureau of Land Management in southern Oregon. In 1975, he moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he worked as a longshoreman for Sea Land, retiring in 2000. He moved to McMinnville. Due to declining health, in 2003 he moved to the Garden and Grove Retirement Home in Forest Grove.
Known as 'Cowboy' among friends and family, he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping and golfing. He also enjoyed spending time with family, playing pool and traveling, especially on trips with his mother to Hawaii.
Survivors include: sons, James Jr. of Newberg and John of Anchorage; daughters, Terry Paola of Grande Ronde and Charlene Henry of Sheridan; brothers, David of Newberg, Don of Amity, Roy of Amity, Robert of Anchorage and Roger of Junction City; sisters, Virginia Perkins of Yamhill, Alice Hendrickson of Forest Grove, Barbara Stevahn of Newberg, Carol Hutchison of Battle Mountain, Nev., Deanna Whitlow of Carlton and Delores Gay of Sandy; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by parents Roy and Catherine Henry, sister Mary Blake, and stepfather Arnold Winkler.
A graveside service was held Oct. 6 at Yamhill-Carlton cemetery in Yamhill.

Doris P. Koehler
Former Newberg resident Doris P. Koehler died Oct. 2, 2005, in McMinnville. She was 73.
She was born Nov. 25, 1931, to William and Iva (Lucha) Mackie in McMinnville. She worked in the healthcare industry. She lived in Newberg for 33 years. She married Victor Koehler on Nov. 16, 1957. He preceded her in death in 1978. She was living in Sheridan at the time of her death.
Survivors include son Steven of Portland and daughter Leslie of Sheridan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and five sisters.
A graveside service was held Oct. 7 at the Willamette National cemetery in Portland.

Leland W. Lindquist
Newberg resident Leland W. Lindquist died Sept. 25, 2005, at his home. He was 64.
He was born Feb. 9, 1941, to John and Leota (Martin) Lindquist in Seattle. The family moved to Portland, where he graduated from Jefferson High School. He worked as a log truck driver for Dick Felix Logging, and later owned his own truck and worked independently. For the past 15 years he was maintenance manager at Momtazi Vineyards.
He enjoyed gold panning, prospecting and was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include: daughters, Tammy Rosenthal of Molalla and Tina Horn of Vancouver, Wash.; son Troy of Redmond; stepson Cain Lindquist of Castle Rock, Wash.; stepdaughter Tonda Smith of Oregon City; sisters, Marilyn Cariker of Tulalip, Wash., Jan Green of Edmonds, Wash., Linda Lindquist of Shoreline, Wash., Teri Bunkley of Hawaii and Patty Pairan of Yamhill; brothers, Gerald and John, both of Portland, and Mark of Yamhill; stepsister Judy Wilson of Camas, Wash.; numerous grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at Momtazi Vineyards.

Marilyn Wong
Newberg resident Marilyn Wong died of a brain tumor on Oct. 2, 2005, at Newberg Care Home. She was 79.
She was born May 20, 1926, in Canton, China. She married Robert Wong on Jan. 15, 1948. For 21 years she owned Darby's Restaurant in Newberg.
She took care of family and grew flowers.
Survivors include: husband Robert; sons, Gary of Newberg and Ed of Milwaukie; daughter Shari of Portland; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Steve Wong in 2003 and daughter Geraldine Sheeley in 2004.
A service will be held at noon Wednesday at Assembly of God, 502 St. Paul Highway.

Paul H. Hauser
Paul H. Hauser died Sept. 25, 2005, at his home in Milwaukie. He was 80.
He was born Nov. 18, 1924, to William and Anna (Merdick) Hauser in Peoria, Ariz. He grew up in Peoria and graduated from high school there. During World War II, he served with the Navy throughout the South Pacific, including Iwo Jima and the Philippines. After the war, he attended Pasadena College in Pasadena, Calif., where he met his wife to be, Maujean Schmidt. Shortly after their marriage they served as ministers at the Winslow (Ariz.) Nazarene Indian Mission.
In 1952, the couple moved from Arizona to the San Francisco Bay Area where he went to work for Heat and Control as a design engineer. During this time he progressed from an avid shutterbug to an accomplished photographer, family members said. In the 1980s he became a corn products consultant for the Snack Food Association of America.
Throughout his career he traveled around the world conducting seminars and training industry personnel. While overseas he often took time to visit missions and frequently took boxes of supplies and assisted the missionaries.
Survivors include: wife Maujean; son Larry of Lake Oswego; daughter Paula Canner of Tok, Alaska; brother Ralph of San Leandro, Calif.; sisters, Faye Baur of San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Mary Hicks of Lancaster, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by brother Edward and sister Ruth Mathis.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 10 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Portland with pastors Quincy Angier and Bill Franklin officiating.

Jane R. Simpson
Jane R. Simpson died Sept. 28, 2005, at her home in Newberg. She was 86.
She was born Aug. 18, 1919, to William and Loretta (Cornelius) Reith in Astoria. She was raised in Astoria, graduating from Astoria High School. She later graduated from Oregon State University. During World War II she served with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a corporal with the medical corpsmen. After the military she was a home extension agent and later became a substitute teacher, teaching all over the Willamette Valley.
On Feb. 14, 1948, she married Kenneth Simpson. They made their home in Newberg for many years.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberg, as well as a member of the Church Ladies Group and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include: husband Kenneth of Newberg; daughters, Mary Jo Mazzella of Scappoose, Reitha Weeks of Seattle and Becky Simpson of Newberg; sister Ann Davidson of Bellevue, Wash.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Willamette National cemetery in Portland. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Newberg First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Peter Blank officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Newberg VFW post.

Carl E. Withers
Carl E. Withers of Hopewell, who graduated from Newberg High School, died Feb. 5, 2006, at Gibson Creek Assisted Living in Salem. He was 94.
He was born Aug. 10, 1911, to Daniel and Zelpha (Snider) Withers in Macdoel, Calif. He attended grade school in Colville, Wash., and graduated from Newberg High School in 1929.
He married Miriam Eskildsen on Jan. 1, 1942, in Macdoel. He served in the Navy during World War II and was attached to the Marines as a medic in the South Pacific. After the war, he moved to Salem.
He moved in 1950 to Hopewell, where he has since resided. He worked on bridge maintenance for the state highway department. He retired in 1975, but continued working on his farm.
He enjoyed golfing, gardening and sports.
Survivors include: sons, Stephen of Salem, David of Tualatin and Daniel of Gresham; brother Homer of Portland; sister Hannah Lenker of Staunton, Va.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997.
A service was held Feb. 9 at the Chapel of Macy and Son Funeral Directors in McMinnville. Pastor Jim Peterson officiated. Private committal was at Hopewell cemetery.

Belva N. Richardson
Former Dundee resident Belva Nyoma Richardson died Jan. 31, 2006, due to complications from diabetes. She was 72.
She was born July 15, 1933, and raised in Dundee. She enjoyed working with animals.
Survivors include: sons, Tony and Tim; daughter Tresa Richardson of Sheridan; nephews, Bill, Mike, Dennis and Craig; and niece Pam Shirts.
No services will be held per her request.

Emma L. Tucker
Former Newberg resident Emma Lee (Strickland) Tucker died Feb. 2, 2006. She was 94.
She was born Nov. 5, 1911, in Tussy, Okla. She graduated from Duncan High School. She moved west with her family in 1941 and settled on a farm in Newberg in 1945.
She was chosen Newberg Mother of the Year in 1953. In 1967, she moved to Beaverton to work at Tektronix.
After retirement, she moved to the King City and Highland areas, where she was active in fund-raising and community activities.
She enjoyed sewing for others and was a professional seamstress. She also enjoyed traveling with friends and playing cards.
Survivors include: sons, Frank, Tommy and James; daughter Wilda Haight; brother Jess Strickland; sister Wanda Little; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
A service of remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. today (Saturday) at Young's Funeral Home, 11831 S.W. Pacific Highway, Tigard.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Hospice.

Clara C. Blanchard
Clara Coffin Blanchard, who has family in Newberg, died Feb. 3, 2006, at her daughter's home in Dallas. She was 83.
She was born Oct. 20, 1922, to William and Anna (Johnson) Coffin in Downey, Idaho, where she attended high school. She married William Cottam in October 1939 in Preston, Idaho. They lived in Malad City, Idaho, and in 1954 moved to McMinnville. They moved to a farm near Lafayette and lived there 37 years. She and her husband divorced. She worked for Swift and Company in McMinnville and Pilgrim Turkey Packers in Salem.
She married Leon Blanchard in April 1970 at the Idaho Falls Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in Lafayette and Dayton. She and her husband served as missionaries from 1979 to 1981 in Harrisburg, Pa. She worked in the Seattle and Portland temples for 10 years.
Survivors include: daughters, Myrna Pendergraft and Teena Fergus of Dayton, Janet Loerts of Dallas, Daneice Blanchard of Carlton, Tamara Thomas of Salem, Janice Kelly and Beth Marriott of Portland, and Edith Takacs of Tucson, Ariz.; sons, Rick Cottam and Jerril Blanchard of Carlton; 37 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Leon; brothers, Leland and LaVelle; sisters, Myrtle Jensen, Effie Anderson and Hilda Petty; son Verlin Cottam; grandson Everett Thomas; and great-granddaughter Sadie Hoilien.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Dayton with Bishop G.M. Fergus officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Dayton Ward Missionary Fund.

David C. Smith
Lifelong St. Paul resident and former mayor David Claude Smith died Feb. 3, 2006. He was 77.
He was born Sept. 11, 1928, in Portland. He married Elaine Smith in October 1954 in St. Paul. He farmed hops and row crops. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and of the St. Paul Rodeo Association. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include: wife Elaine of St. Paul; daughters, Sally Johnston of Dayton and Lynn Turpen of St. Paul; sons, David and Ben Smith, both of St. Paul; brothers, James, Jack and Sam, all of St. Paul; sister, Jane Sammons of Newberg; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at St. Paul Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Ambulance Fund, care of the St. Paul Fire Department.
