Lloyd R. Fitzsimmons
Newberg resident Lloyd Robert Fitzsimmons died Jan. 31, 2006, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 87.
He was born June 27, 1918, to Lloyde and Alice (Dametz) Fitzsimmons in Enosdale, Kan. He lived his youth in Wichita, Kan., and graduated from Haviland Friends Academy in Haviland, Kan. He attended Friends University in Wichita.
In August 1938, he married Lillian Zarnecke in Elmdale, Kan. They moved to Houston and later to Portland. They moved to Wilsonville in 1974, and then to Newberg, where they lived until his death.
He was employed by Hyster and then by Leupold & Stevens, before joining the Product Engineering Company, from which he retired after 25 years. At that time, he and his wife bought a working 40-acre farm on Ladd Hill near Wilsonville.
Survivors include: wife Lillian of Newberg; daughters, Margaret Drahn of Redmond and Noreen Newman of Medford; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, a stillborn daughter, and son Charles.
A memorial service was held Feb. 4 at Sherwood Friends Church with Pastors Ken Vanden Hoek and Harvey Bowen officiating.
No graveside service will be held, as he donated his body to the Oregon Health and Sciences University for medical research.

Raymond E. Gere
Newberg resident Raymond Everett Gere died Feb. 3, 2006, at Chehalem Health and Rehabilitation Center in Newberg. He was 93.
He was born Sept. 7, 1912, to John and Pearl (Starr) Gere in Letcher, S.D. He graduated from high school in 1930 at Agar, S.D. He attended Iowa State College. During World War II, from 1941 to 1944, he worked as an inspector for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kan. He moved to Iowa and farmed there from 1944 until 1950. He ran an implement business in Perry, Iowa, until 1957. He moved in 1956 to Curtis Heights, Calif., and managed the truck tire department for Sears.
In 1967, he moved to Molalla, where he farmed until retirement in 1977. He moved again in 1992 to Newberg, where he lived until the time of his death.
He enjoyed gardening, travel, farming and regularly filmed his daughter's horse events.
Survivors include: wife Dorothy; son Jerry of San Francisco; daughters, Virginia Howard of Caldwell, Idaho, and Debra Shaffer of Newberg; granddaughters, Krystal and Kianna Shaffer and Karen Ehlers; great-grandson Shaun; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Loraine, and sisters Deloris and Cheryl.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with Pastor Lee Shafer officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Mercedes Schwarz
Mercedes Schwarz died Feb. 2, 2006, at her home in Newberg. She was 80.
She was born Feb. 16, 1925, to Jose and Carmen (Pellecer) Vielman in Guatemala. On Oct. 6, 1945, she married Gustavo 'Gus' Schwarz in Guatemala. They moved in 1955 to Los Angeles, where she worked as a cardiopulmonary technician at Valley Presbyterian Hospital. In 1976, they moved to Newberg. She worked for the Newberg hospital and later as a baker for Springbrook School. Her husband preceded her in death in May 2005.
She enjoyed knitting, baking and her family. She was a member of the St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
Survivors include: sons, Richard and Gus Jr. of Newberg; daughters, Patricia Lannutti of Philadelphia, Pa., and Marie Bates of Portland; sisters, Jofefa and Teresa Zamora and Amparo Scheiber, all of Guatemala, and Carmen Cortez of Los Angeles; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Feb. 6 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the church building fund, care of Alternative Burial and Cremation of Oregon, P.O. Box 202, Sherwood, OR 97140.

Viola M. Blanchard
Newberg resident Viola M. Blanchard died Jan. 30, 2006, at home. She was 86.
She was born Feb. 18, 1919, to Joseph and Mabel (Koeber) Kaufman in Portland. She was raised in the Hillsboro area. She married Leonard Blanchard in 1938. They lived in Garibaldi. She was widowed in 1939. She later moved to Hillsboro, where she worked for Tektronix, retiring after 23 years. She moved to the Nehalem Bay area and, in 2002, to Newberg, where she was living at the time of her death.
Survivors include: daughter, Darlene Mathis of Newberg; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 11 at First Presbyterian Church in Newberg. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Theodore J. Bernard
Theodore John 'TJ' Bernard, who has family in St. Paul, died Jan. 31, 2006, in Elko, Nev. He was 55.
He was born Sept. 6, 1950, to Don and Jeannette (Kirk) Bernard in Woodburn. He graduated from Mount Angel's John. F. Kennedy High School in 1969. He moved to Douglas, Wyo., in 1976 and worked for Bear Creek Uranium Mine. In 1987 he moved to Battle Mountain, Nev., where he worked for McCoy Mines as a truck driver.
He enjoyed hunting in Paisley and exploring the Nevada desert for artifacts and rocks. He enjoyed woodworking, making stained glass and working on his 1967 Chevelle.
Survivors include: wife Lorene Bernard of Battle Mountain; son Glenn of Denver; daughter Terri Petrjanos of St. Paul; brothers, Michael of St. Paul, Stanley of Lynnwood, Wash., and David of Mandan, N.D.; sister Nannette Fleck of Mount Angel and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 18 at St. Paul Catholic Church. A reception will follow at the St. Paul fire hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Parochial School or St. Paul Ambulance Fund.

Judith M. Hoskins
Judith Marie Hoskins died Feb. 1, 2006, at her home in Newberg. She was 55.
She was born July 9, 1950, to Robert and Virginia (Dufresne) Claire in Anchorage, Alaska. She moved with her family to Port Angeles, Wash., where she graduated from high school. She moved to San Diego, Calif., where she began her banking career. She moved to Portland area to be near family. She became a member of the Beaverton Nazarene Church, where she met her husband. She married David Hoskins on Oct. 12, 1980, in Beaverton.
She was part owner of Whimzze's Gift and Scrapbooking Nook in Beaverton. She worked for many years for U.S. Bank and at First Federal Savings branches in McMinnville, Newberg and Carlton. She attended Countryside Community Church in Sherwood.
She enjoyed scrap-booking and collecting Muffy and Beannie Babies.
Survivors include: husband David of Newberg; father Jim of Beaverton; sons, Timothy of Simi Valley, Calif., and Daniel of Newberg; daughters, Cynthia and Virginia, both of Newberg; brother Robert Claire of Pensacola, Fla.; sister Maribeth Roberts of Portland, and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Claire.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at Northside Community Church in Newberg with Pastor Sean McNay and Pastor Timothy Hoskins officiating. Committal will follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

George E. Rarick
George Earl Rarick died Jan. 25, 2006, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 74.
He was born Oct. 25, 1931, to Joe and Lily May (Turner) Rarick in Grants Pass. At a young age he moved with this family to the Dundee area. He graduated from Newberg High School in 1949. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He returned to the Dundee area after his discharge.
On March 26, 1954, he married J. Yvonne Smith in Vancouver, Wash. They made their home in Portland, where he worked for Uniguard Insurance. They then moved to Newberg, where he lived until his death. He worked for A-dec Inc. for more than 25 years as a supervisor of shipping and receiving. His wife preceded him in death in July 1996.
He enjoyed sports, watching them on television and attending his children and grandchildren's events. He was a regular at J's Restaurant and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 4015 of Newberg.
Survivors include: son Joe of Newberg; daughter Jacki Koehler of Tualatin; brothers Jim of Newberg and Chuck of Goshen; seven grandchildren; four nieces and four nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, with the Rev. Gregg Selander officiating. Committal will follow at Dundee Pioneer cemetery. Chapel viewing and visitation hours are from 8 a.m. to noon today at Attrell's.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, care of Attrell's.

Albert L. Barry
Former Newberg resident Albert L. Barry died of liver disease on Jan. 13, 2006, in Pacific City. He was 73.
He was born May 28, 1933, to Lawerance and Alice (Hastings) Barry in Salem. He was educated in Salem and served in the Navy. He worked for K-line Trucking Inc., from which he retired. He worked for Newberg Ready Mix for several years. He lived in Newberg from 1966 to 1998, when he moved to Pacific City, where he was living at the time of his death.
He married Sue Ball on Jan. 31, 1960. She preceded him in death in July 2005.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, billiards and family activities.
Survivors include: daughter Tracie Raush of Pacific City; son Sean of Newberg and grandchildren, Nick and Ashley Smith and Broc and Tahtyona Barry.
He was preceded in death by son Travis in 2003.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Travel Lodge, 2816 Portland Road.

Rosemary Youngman
Rosemary Youngman, who had family in Newberg, died Jan. 11, 2006, at her home in Sherwood. She was 67.
She was born Jan. 4, 1939, in Jamaica Long Island, N.Y. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Portland. She was a night auditory for many area hotels. She lived in Oregon since 1974. Prior to that she lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Frankfurt, Germany.
She enjoyed bowling, inside gardening, reading, trivia, classical music, painting and art.
Survivors include: sons, Paul of Newberg and Timothy of Greenville, S.C.; and brothers, Raymond Higgins of Denver and Michael Goggin of Molalla.
No formal services will be held. Cremation is private.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Elizabeth 'Betty' E. Hinckley
Dundee resident Elizabeth Ellen Hinckley died Jan. 22, 2006, at Chehalem Care Home. She was 86.
She was born July 24, 1919, to Cornelius and Pearl (Cassell) Bush in Clifton, N.J. She was known to friends and family as Betty. She married Hal Hinckley in 1940. In 2000, they moved to Dundee to be near their daughter.
Survivors include: husband Hal of Dundee; daughter Jan Newhouse; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Dundee Methodist Church.

Bunny M. Morrill
Bernadette 'Bunny' Marie Morrill of Newberg died of cancer on Jan. 13, 2006. She was 62.
She was born Sept. 4, 1943, to Felix and Bertha Pelletier in Albany. She graduated in 1962 from Albany Union High School (West). In 1963 she married Michael Morrill of Albany. He served in the Navy for 20 years, and they moved to several locations around the United States as he took different assignments. While stationed at Parris Island, she was a preschool teacher in the South Carolina public school system.
She managed a small restaurant for a time. She later worked at Hand in Hand Children's Learning Center in Newberg, where she divided her time between assisting the director and managing the kitchen and cooking. Illness forced her retirement, after 12 years, in 2003.
She enjoyed spending time with family, visiting the Oregon coast, embroidering, baking, finding or making gifts for her grandchildren, and collecting Santa Clauses.
Survivors include: husband, Michael; daughters, Sandy Adams of Yamhill and Malea Morrill of Prescott, Ariz.; grandchildren, Darci Manning and Dylan and Drew Adams; brothers, Ray of Auburn, Wash., and Ed of Winthrop Minn.; and sister Dianna Hanson of Corvallis.
No services will be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to a local day-care center of one's choice.
