Douglas E. Coburn
Douglas Emery Coburn of McMinnville died May 3, 2006, at W illamette Valley Medical Center in McMinnville. He was 53.
He was born Sept. 26, 1952, to Jesse and Rosie (Comer) Coburn in McMinnville. He was raised and educated in Newberg and has lived in Yamhill for most of his life.
He enjoyed watching movies and restoring cars.
Survivors include: son Douglas Jr. of Newberg; daughter Jennifer Cook of Lafayette; brother Bill of Canby; sisters, Liz Hubbard of McMinnville and Dorothy Lunsford of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Stefanie and brothers Jack and Dan.
Private family services were held.

Arlene L. Toler
Arlene Lois Toler of Newberg died May 6, 2006, at Providence Newberg Hospital. She was 79.
She was born Nov. 5, 1926, to Martin and Ruby (Etziviler) Hayman in Garibaldi. As a young girl she moved to Newberg, where she was raised and educated, graduating from Newberg High School. She married William King in 1948 and traveled with him while he was in the military. He preceded her in death.
She moved to Ohio, then Denver to work in Veteran's Administration hospitals. She returned to Newberg and married Willard Toler in Aug. 24, 1970. She worked in property management in the 1980s.
She enjoyed playing bingo and gardening.
Survivors include: son Rodney King of Portland; daughters, Elaine Hamilton of Dundee, Kathy Gordon of Portland, Pattie DeYoung of Ocean Park, Wash., Rita King of Nehalem and Debbie Scroggins of Cameron, La.; sister Murel Conway of Newberg; 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her second husband, Willard Toler, and by daughter Donna Highley.
No services are scheduled.

Ely E. Wilder
Ely Elwood Wilder of Lafayette died on May 6, 2003, at Providence Newberg Hospital. He was 78.
He was born Oct. 23, 1927, in Powers to Clinton and Josephine (Wilson) Wilder. 'Doc, ' as he was known, went to school in southern Oregon and graduated from high school in Portland. He served in the Army and received an honorable discharge. He married Emma Clark in McMinnville on Dec. 22, 1945. He worked for the Xerox Corp. for 35 years as a service technician.
He enjoyed enameling, panning for gold and the outdoors. He was a member of the Metzger United Methodist Church and the Northwest Enamelist Society.
Survivors include: wife Emma of Newberg; sons, Ken of Fresno, Calif., and Doss of Newberg; daughters, Kathy Steyaert of Seattle and Mercedes Sweeney of Seaside; brother George of Baker City; sister Rena Zellner of Lake Oswego; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Metzger United Methodist Church in Portland with Pastor Robin Yim officiating. Committal is private at Gibbs cemetery in Sherwood.

Mary E. Seidel
Mary Esther Seidel of Newberg died on April 22, 2006. She was 86.
She was born March 26, 1920, to Scott and Elsie (Coppock) Clark in Haviland, Kan. She attended primary and secondary school in Haviland. She graduated from Friends Bible College in Haviland in 1939, and Pacific College (now George Fox University) in 1949 with a bachelor's degree.
She married Heinrich Seidel, who she met in college, on July 16, 1950, in Wichita, Kan. The couple made their home in Idaho for many years. The couple retired in Newberg, where she volunteered at the local thrift store and at Friendsview Manor, where she moved when her husband preceded her in death in 1998.
She enjoyed music and sang in her church and during her daily duties in the home. She also enjoyed quilting and needlecrafts. She was a member of West Chehalem Friends Church.
Survivors include: sisters, Lucy Anderson of Canton, Ohio, and Lois Smith of Greenleaf, Idaho; son Mark Rousey-Seidel of Petaluma, Calif.; daughter Sharon Lee of Oakland, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brothers Wayne and Roy Clark and sister Ruth Corbin.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. May 12, 2006, at West Chehalem Friends Church, 16700 N.E. North Valley Road.

Robert D. Smith
McMinnville native Robert Drake Smith of Newberg died on May 3, 2006. He was 63.
He was born Aug. 21, 1942, in McMinnville to Robert and Elsie (Gehring) Smith. He grew up and attended school in the area and received a bachelor's degree in business administration and military science. He entered the United States Army in September 1964 and served in the Army and Army Reserves until June 1968. He owned and operated a cabinet shop and built cabinets for many homes. On Dec. 6, 1981, he married Patricia Angell in Newberg; they made their home in the area.
He worked for Families United for Independent Living (FUFIL), building housing for people with developmental disabilities.
Survivors include: wife Patricia of Newberg; son Morgan of Newberg; daughters, Abigail Jorgenson of Chimicum, Wash., Amy Harvey of Portland and Mia and Cristen Babineau of Middletown, Calif.; sister Olive Marshall of Tigard; and seven grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. May 13, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church of Newberg with the Rev. Peter Blank officiating. Committal is private.

Birdie Cross
Birdie 'Lee' Cross died Oct. 6, 2006, in McMinnville. She was 80.
She was born April 14, 1926, in Alton, Ill., to S. Ray and Ruth (Baldwin) Crane. She met her future husband, Robert Cross, on a riverboat on the Mississippi River. They were married in November 1944.
Her husband was a member of the United States Air Corps and the couple lived in many places across the nation during his service. They settled in Oregon in 1970, and moved to McMinnville in 1971.
She enjoyed singing and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include: husband Bob of McMinnville; son Robert of Newberg; daughter Judy Fogarty of McMinnville; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Oct. 21 at Seventh-day Adventist Church in Newberg.

Inez O. Shrock
Inez O. Shrock of McMinnville died Oct. 1, 2006. She was 90.
She was born Sept. 26, 1916, in Hinkley, Minn., to Otis and Ethel (Anderson) Hankins, and graduated from Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho, with a degree in education. She worked as a teacher for several years in Emmett, Idaho, before marrying Earl Shrock on May 23, 1937.
The couple moved to McMinnville in 1938 and to Newberg in 1953, where they were business partners in the Shrock Appliance store. They returned to McMinnville in 1973. Her husband preceded her in death in 1995.
She was a member of the Soroptimists and the First Presbyterian Church, where she was involved with the Laubach Library Program. She enjoyed golf, choral singing, sewing and travel.
Survivors include: sons, Keith of Beaverton and Loren of Wilsonville; daughters, Marita Noyes of Boise and Nadine Lynch of Seattle; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Friday at the First Presbyterian Church of McMinnville.

Leonard Dressel
Newberg resident Leonard Henry Dressel died Oct. 2, 2006, in McMinnville. He was 89.
He was born April 12, 1917, in Burdette, Colo., to Jacob and Katherine (Gamaehlich) Dressel. He attended school in Newberg and served on Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) projects before entering the U.S. Army in 1941. He married Ethel Hayes in 1937 in Vancouver, Wash. She preceded him in death in 2005.
After the war, he worked for the Murphy Lumber Company in Yamhill County for many years, until an injury ended his forestry career. He later worked for, and retired from, the Newberg School District as a custodian at Renne Middle School.
Survivors include: sons, Bill of Tigard, Jerry of Milwaukie and Mike of McMinnville; sisters, Emma Kondraski and Florence Corder of Newberg and Irene McFall of Sherwood; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Newberg.

Robert M. Brown
Robert M. Brown died Sept 27, 2006 in Olympia, Wash. He was 65.
He was born January 30th, 1941 in Eugene to Dan M. and Joy (Mealey) Brown. He graduated Newberg High School in 1959.
He received his B.A. degree from Linfield College and his M.A. and MBA from University of Indiana. He also earned his pilot's license at the age of 16 and spent many years as a pilot.
His final flight will be in the classic Comanche airplane he helped restore where his business partner and friend Richard Engstrom will scatter his ashes.
Survivors include: sister Carol Brown Fields of Newberg; daughters Deborah Murray of Beaverton, Haidee Copeland of Eugene, Tanya Brown of Newberg, and Natasha Brown of Salem; five grandchildren; and companion Jane Kreger.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Spalding Oaks Apartments community center at 1100 N. Meridian Street in Newberg.

Diane Lust
Diane Lust died Sept. 24, 2006, in McMinnville. She was 68.
She was born Jan. 9, 1938, in McMinnville to Andrew and Irene (Cauffman) Petersen. She graduated from McMinnville High School in 1956. At the age of 12, she was ranked as the No. 2 tennis player on the West Coast in her age bracket, and as a high school student she won the state championship in tennis three years in a row. She was also a member of the rally squad and an honor student.
She attended Oregon State University and earned a degree in education, returning to Yamhill County to teach junior high school in Newberg until her retirement in 1994.
Besides tennis, she enjoyed playing golf and gardening. She was a charter member of Michelbook Country Club, where she was women's club champion from 1964 to 1978. She was also a fan of OSU baseball and Linfield football, and a supporter of high school athletics.
Survivors include: son Mark Fisler of McMinnville and brother Larry Petersen of Lafayette, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Macy & Son Funeral Home in McMinnville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Diane Petersen Fund at McMinnville High School in care of Macy & Son Funeral Home.

Howard W. Sprague
Howard W. Sprague died Aug. 27, 2006, at his Newberg home. He was 79.
He was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Lee, Mont., to Ernest and Clara (Parkins) Sprague. In 1952 he married Bernice Howell in Yuma, Ariz. After living in California and Montana, the couple moved to Oregon in 1964. They then moved to the Dalles, where Sprague worked on the John Day Dam, and later settled in Newberg.
He was a member of the Gold Prospectors of America and enjoyed panning for gold. He also enjoyed fishing, camping and working with horses.
Survivors include: sons, Howard Jr. of Las Vegas and E. Wade of Newberg; daughters Denise Labb-Brown of Grand Ronde and Alice Sprague of Rickreall; sister Martha Terrano of Durham, Calif.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bernice in January 2002, his granddaughter, Abby, one brother and one sister.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today (Saturday) at the Oak Grove Grange, 2670 Oak Grove Road in Rickreall.
Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice or the Horse and Burro Foundation, in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel.
