Lillian V. Jones
Lilian V. Jones died July 10, 2006, in Tillamook. She was 88.
She was born June 5, 1918, in Dundee to Vern and Olive (Flock) Downhour. She had lived in Tillamook since 1945.
She worked for Mark Sanders Pharmacy in Garibaldi, McLean Drug Center in Grants Pass, at Barview Park and as a bookkeeper for her husband's business from 1982-89 in Bay City.
She and her husband Russell Jones were grand marshals in the 2001 Garibaldi Day Parade. She was a member of the Garibaldi Fire Department auxiliary and a Cub Scout leader. She enjoyed children, flowers, birds, dogs and lemon drops.
She was preceded in death by her husband, first husband Walter Andrew Staples, son David Jones and stepson Charles Jones.
Survivors include: sons, Rex Crites of North Carolina and Kenneth Staples of southern Oregon; stepson Russell Jones of Milwaukie; nephews Robert Jones and Ralph Harwood; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
A funeral service was held Saturday at the Christ's Victory Fellowship Church in Garibaldi. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tillamook County Hospice Program at 1015 Third St., Tillamook OR 97141.

David E. Jacquith
David Edwin Jacquith died at his Lafayette home June 27, 2006. He was 80.
He was born April 3, 1926, in Corvallis to Walter and Esther (Swain) Jacquith. He attended Newberg High School and worked as a commercial artist. He married Mary Fern on Feb. 3, 1978.
He was a member of 2nd Street Community Church and was active in Initiatives of Change.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. July 24 at Newberg First Assembly of God Church.

Bernice V. Mattoon
Bernice Vera 'Bonnie' Mattoon died June 16, 2006, at a Newberg care facility. She was 90.
She was born Jan. 28, 1916, in Portland to Otto and Lydia (Schulze). She grew up in Northeast Portland and graduated from Jefferson High in 1934.
She attended the Oregon Institute of Technology, and after graduation worked for the YMCA and Marshall Fields before becoming a realtor in Lake Oswego.
On April 11, 1941, she married Alfred Mattoon in Portland. The couple owned and operated Lake Shore Apartments from 1950-57 in Lake Oswego, and the Heppner Hotel in Heppner from 1957-60. After retiring, they lived in McMinnville and Newberg. He preceded her in death in March 2004.
Survivors include: son Kerry of Dundee; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Monday at Maresh Red Hill Vineyard Retreat near Dundee.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Legacy Hospice of McMinnville or the Newberg Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 970, Newberg OR 97132.

Sam J. Myers
Sam Jack Myers died July 7, 2006, at Providence Newberg Medical Center. He was 86.
He was born June 27, 1920, in Chelsea, Mass., to Edwin and Bella (Larkin) Myers. At the age of 6, his family moved to Long Island, New York.
He first visited Oregon at age 16 as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps posted in John Day. He later traveled to Hawaii, where he worked in the naval shipyard for the Civil Aeronautics Association.
He moved to Agoura Hills, Calif. in 1964, and on Oct. 2, 1966, married Shirley Wells in Las Vegas.
For the next 39 years, he worked for the Federal Aviation Administration, and after 1980 in the computer industry.
He retired in 1988 and moved to Oregon, where he enjoyed reading, gardening, fishing and woodworking. He painted in oil and watercolor and taught painting classes. He was also a stamp collector since age 7, and researched family genealogy during his last decade of life.
Survivors include: wife Shirley of Dundee; sons, Bill of Newberg and Matthew Myers of Kuna, Idaho; brother Jim Parsons of San Angelo, Texas; sister Sylvia McClean of Sun City West, Ariz.; four grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, with pastor Richard Sartwell officiating. Committal was by private ceremony.

Frances J. Ware
Newberg native Frances Jean Ware died July 8, 2006, at Providence Newberg Medical Center. She was 83.
She was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Newberg to Frank and Grace (Baker) DeVore. She graduated from Newberg High School and attended business college in Long Beach, Calif., where she met her future husband.
She married Noel Emerson Ware on Jan. 4, 1939, in Yuma, Ariz. The couple made their home in San Diego and Long Beach while her husband served in the U.S. Navy. In 1960 the couple moved to Newberg.
She was a member of the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed family gatherings and reunions in Hawaii.
Survivors include: husband Noel of Newberg; sons, Michael of Maui, Hawaii, and Steven of Newberg; daughter Carol Barca of Maui; brother Jack DeVore of Salem and grandchildren Jason Klohs and Anthony Barca.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Grace, who died at age 5 and by sister Lois Livengood.
A memorial service was held Friday at the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

Joyce C. Burgess
Former Newberg resident Joyce C. Burgess of Tualatin died July 6, 2006. She was 90.
She was born April 17, 1916, in Coos Bay to Arthur and Florence (Childers) Ferrell in Coos Bay. She grew up in Newberg.
She attended George Fox University and married Dr. Guy Burgess in 1938. The couple lived in Portland before moving to McMinnville in 1949.
Following her husband's death in 1991 she lived in Spokane, Wash., and Salem before moving to Tualatin in 2003.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in McMinnville. She enjoyed playing bridge and the piano, poetry, puzzles and Bible study.
Survivors include: sons, Clark Burgess of La Crescenta, Calif., and Jerry Burgess of Redlands, Calif.; daughter Connie Burgess of Tualatin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A burial service was held July 10 at the Masonic cemetery in McMinnville.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimers Association in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, 135 N. Evans, McMinnville, OR 97128.

Joyce R. Neill
Newberg resident Joyce R. Neill died July 7, 2006 at a Portland hospital. She was 78.
She was born June 10, 1928, in Bruce, Alberta, Canada, to Dudley Merritt and Ethel (Johnson) Haight. She moved to Newberg with her family in 1945.
On Sept. 14, 1949, she married Harvey Neill in the Newberg Free Methodist Church. She worked at the Green Lantern Cafe, Western Auto Store and A-dec, Inc., before retiring in 1994.
She was a member of the Methodist Church for many years, and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing the piano and bingo.
Survivors include: stepson Doug Neill of Las Vegas; brothers Ira Haight of Drayton Valley, Canada, Ralph Haight of Pacific Palisades, Calif., and Lester Haight of Newberg; sisters, Francis Peterson of Oregon City and Gloria Storment of Newberg; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by sisters Pearl Kraskey, Lola Lund and Evelyn Lewis.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel. A concluding service will be in Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg at a later date.

Leighton E. Whitsett
Leighton E. Whitsett of Aurora died July 5, 2006, of natural causes. He was 89.
He was born Feb. 18, 1917, in Orland, Calif. He started his career as an engineer at Douglas Air Craft in California before moving to Aurora in 1945. He worked as a mechanical engineer at Tektronix in Beaverton until his retirement in 1982.
He married Evelyn Yergen on May 5, 1950, in Las Vegas. She preceded him in death in 1993.
He was a member of the Aurora Presbyterian Church and the Friends of Historic Champoeg Park. He was a past president of the Izaak Walton League. He was awarded in 1993 by the Oregon State parks system for his volunteering.
He enjoyed drafting, wood carving and painting. Among his projects were a set of signs for Champoeg Park. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and was active in wildlife conservation, volunteering and teaching.
Survivors include: son Alan Whitsett of Aurora; daughters, Valertie Lang of Aurora and Tina Wheeler of Durham; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held July 10 at the Simon Woodburn Funeral Chapel. The burial took place at Champoeg cemetery in Aurora.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Izaak Walton League in care of the Simon Woodburn Funeral Chapel.

Vera L. Froemke
Vera Lorene Froemke died at her Newberg home on June 30, 2006. She was 90.
She was born Aug. 23, 1915, in Portland to Franklin and Clara (Knorr) Culp.
She attended Woodburn High School and married Kenneth Gillanders in 1934. The couple moved to Fairbanks, Alaska, where she worked as a medical receptionist.
In 1954 the couple divorced and she returned to Portland. On May 10, 1974, she married Dennis Froemke and they moved to Klamath Falls. He preceded her in death in October 1990.
She returned to Newberg in 1991 to be with her family. She was a member of the Newberg First Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed music, singing and playing the organ.
Survivors include: son Keith Gillanders of Walker Lake, Nev.; daughters, Linda Meier and Judith Gillanders of Lafayette; and grandchildren Shawn and Kristi Meier and Melinda Compton.
No funeral services are scheduled.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Newberg Assembly of God Church, in care of Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg OR 97132.

DeMoine W. Mosier
Former Newberg resident DeMoine W. 'Russ' Mosier of Oregon City died July 1, 2006, in a motorcycle accident. He was 59.
He was born May 21, 1947, in Chickasha, Okla., and moved to California in 1958. He served in the Naval Reserve and on active duty in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.
He moved to Newberg in 1975, and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Linfield College. He worked as a dispatcher for Baker Rock Resources for 15 years, and as a mentor instructor for Team Oregon.
He returned to California and Dayton before settling in Oregon City in 2005. He enjoyed motorcycles, painting and sculpture, horses and greyhounds.
Survivors include: parents Ray and Lavetta Mosier of Salem; fiancee Jamie Phillips of Oregon City; ex-wife Kathy Wagner of Canby; daughters, Laura Mosier of Beaverton and Della Mosier of Las Vegas; brother Fred of St. Roberts, Mo.; sister Sharon Cheffins of Vista, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held July 6 at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn, followed by a burial with military honors at Willamette National cemetery in Portland.
