Bill Swonger
Bill Swonger, a Newberg firefighter for more than 44 years and a local barber for 35, died March 25, 2002, in Clackamas at the age of 67.
He was born May 21, 1934, in Sharon, Kan., to Winfred and Ellen (Gilpin) Swonger. The family moved to Newberg in 1936, where he graduated from Newberg High School in 1953.
He married Darlene Hacke on Nov. 6, 1954, in Newberg at her parents home.
He worked for Publisher Paper for a short time as well as serving in the National Guard from 1953 to 1961, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He later attended Modern Barber School and graduated in 1963.
On April 25, 1957, he joined the Newberg Fire Department where he achieved the rank of assistant fire chief. He was an active member and just one month from his 45th anniversary with the department.
"He was active and responding to the support side of the organization ... he still had turnouts and a helmet," said NFD Division Chief Al Blodgett.
Swonger was president of the volunteer firefighter association in 1979 and while he was assistant chief served in the duty officer (250 officer) cabaret. The group went out on investigations at night and took command on fire calls. He also was on the volunteers applicant screening committee.
"He was also a great individual to pick at for history of the organization," Blodgett said. "He had been around long enough to know those things. He must have served under close to seven fire chiefs."
When he retired last year he was one of the last volunteers who as a business person would drop what he would do to report on calls.
"He was a quiet leader," Blodgett said. "Many of our new firefighters ... many looked upon him as someone to become involved with."
As far as his demeanor Blodgett said,"he was kind of a guy where if you dont want the answer to a question you better not ask it."
Swonger was still active with the department in a support role. Most recently he assisted on a three-alarm fire at the SP Newsprint warehouse with public information.
He attended right up until the end of every drill and business meeting the department held and responded to the station to every fire call and motor vehicle call. He historically racked up the most points among the volunteers for response calls.
In 1966, he opened Bills Barber Shop, which he owned and operated on South College Street until his retirement in 2001. He had a sign on his door that said "out on fire call" which people were accustomed to.
"Ive talked to people who got left with a half a haircut and that was even when I was here," Blodgett said.
Swonger also enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He was involved with hunting dogs growing up, according to a friend.
"Bill was here in town and knew just about everybody," said Leonard Braithwait, who grew up with Swonger and served in the NFD with him from 1967 to 1992.
"The first fire I went out with him was on Parrett Mountain on a grass fire," he recalled. "I remember I was on the tailboard and he was driving and we got out there and you train on the job. He hadnt done too much driving and couldnt find out how to get the pump in gear... we finally got it in gear and fought the fire."
Swonger also attended the Newberg Christian Church. In church the two often did communion because Braithwait said Bill would sign him up at the same time.
Survivors include: wife Darlene; sons, Darrol and David both of Newberg; daughters, Connie Crafton of McMinnville and Julie Swonger of Lafayette; brother, Jack of Newberg and sister, Bonnie Farr of Dundee; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services followed by Newberg Fire Department honors will be held at 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Newberg Christian Church. Mausoleum entombment will be in Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum in Newberg.
Memorial contributions may be made to the NFD or to the Newberg Christian Church in his memory in care of Howell-Edwards-Doerksen Funeral Home, 1350 Commercial St. S.E. Salem, Oregon 97302.
