Lynn I. Hinton
Lynn Ivan Hinton died March 21, 2002. He was 81. At the familys request no service will be scheduled. Arrangements are in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel.

Melvin D. Thompson
Melvin Dwren "Tom" Thompson of Cottage Grove died March 12, 2002, of kidney failure. He was 66.
He was born June 22, 1935, in Gillette, Wyo., to Cecil and Merna (Closson) Thompson. He married Dorothy Strickland in Lawndale, Calif., in August 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1959. He later worked as a truck driver for Georgia Pacific, and also owned and operated his own trucking company.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, playing cards and spending time with his family. He was a past member of the Cottage Grove U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars post and the Moose Lodge.
Survivors include: wife Merna of Cottage Grove; stepmother Irene Thompson of Newberg; sons, Jack and Larry Strickland, both of Cottage Grove; daughters, Caroline Lasater of Springfield and Tina Miller, Annette McMullen and Billie Ann Kittel, all of Cottage Grove; brothers, Robert and Benjamin, both of Newberg, and Harold Uken of Sheridan; sisters, Marie Hudgeon of Tillamook, Mary Wilson of Aloha, Cecilia Vazquez of Newberg and Martha Mullen of Eugene; 16 grandchildren and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son, Max Strickland, in 1967.
A memorial service was held March 16 at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.
Memorial contributions may be to the American Cancer Society.

Edward W. Wonacott
Edward "Butch" W. Wonacott of Wilsonville died of cancer on March 17, 2002. He was 49.
He was born Dec. 8, 1952, to Chet and Wanda Wonacott and lived most of his life in the Woodburn and Canby areas. He attended Woodburn High School and started working in the construction field upon his graduation in 1971. He married Nicolette Landeen in 1990.
Family members said he was a perfectionist when it came to concrete work. He formed his own company, Butchs Custom Concrete. He later worked for Axis Curb Company and Walling Sand and Gravel until 1998 when he started his own home construction company, Mr. Bs Construction, named after his cat.
According to family members, he excelled at arm wrestling and at one time was ranked third in the world in the light heavyweight division, wrestling in Las Vegas. He enjoyed playing with his cats, fishing and, according to family members, was a friend to many.
Survivors include: wife Nicolette of Woodburn; stepdaughter and stepson, Gina and Paul Pagano; and two nieces.
Memorial services were held Thursday at Wilsonville Cornwell Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the cancer division of Doernbecher Childrens Hospital, North Shore Animal League or the charity of ones choice.

Lois W. Hailey
Former Newberg resident Lois Wanda Hailey died March 15, 2002. She was 74.
She was born May 31, 1927, in Winnebago, Minn., to Perry and Elsie (Rechenbach) Findley. She grew up and attended school in Northwest Missouri, then moved to Oregon and worked as a welder in the shipyards during World War II. She married former Missourian James Harold "Doc" Hailey in February 1946 in Vancouver, Wash. After raising her family she worked at Sartron, Allen Fruit, Naps IGA and Tektronix from 1966 to 1986. She moved to McMinnville in 1996.
Survivors include: daughter Janice Ross of Hillsboro; sons Thomas and Larry of Newberg, and Michael of Amity; brother Robert Findley of Albany; sisters Marjorie DeHart of Dundee and Avis Davis of Carson, Wash.; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband, Doc.
A celebration of life will be held from noon to 4 p.m. today (Saturday) in McMinnville at her home. Committal is private.

Valeria E. Shaw
Valeria Ellen Shaw of Newberg died March 19, 2002. She was 83.
She was born March 29, 1918, to Chris and Emma (Christianson) Davidson in Scotland, S.D. She moved to Oregon as a child and settled with her family in Carlton, where she attended school. In 1937, she moved to Newberg, where she has resided since. She married George Friday in April 1944; he preceded her in death in April 1962.
She worked at local canneries during the summer seasons, including Allen Fruit Canning for several years, and then Springbrook Cannery. She remarried in October 1968 to Eugene Shaw in Vancouver, Wash., and that same year began working for Baker Furniture in Portland, retiring 10 years later in 1978.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and First Baptist Church in Newberg. She enjoyed family and friends, cooking, eating and trips to the beach.
Survivors include: sons Ronald Friday of Newberg and Glen Friday of Albany; daughter Patricia Mathis of Eugene; sister Myrtle Davidson of Newberg; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, Eugene, in 1974.
A funeral service is set for 11 a.m. today (Saturday) at Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel with Pastor Larry Smithwick officiating. A concluding service will follow at Valley View Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of Attrells Newberg Chapel, 207 N. Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Mae Speights
Mae Speights of Newberg died March 14, 2002, at her home. She was 101.
She was born March 25, 1900, in Arkansas to Mack and Lucy (Ivy) Hamilton. She grew up and attended school in Oklahoma and in her early years worked as the daughter of a sharecropper. On Sept. 27, 1915, she married Joshua Speights in Crowder City. In 1922, they moved to Texas where they sharecropped for many years before settling in California. They moved to Antioch, Calif., where they lived until 1945 when they moved to Molalla, then to Redmond in 1954. After moving to Santa Rosa, Calif., they moved back to live at the Reindeer Ranch near Redmond.
After her husband died in 1968 in Acampo, Calif., she moved to Newberg in 1969 where she lived until her death. She was a member of the Newberg Church of Christ and enjoyed quilting, gardening and crocheting.
Survivors include: sons, Lloyd of Magalia, Calif., Herbert of Penn Valley, Calif. and Roy of Sacramento; daughters, Marjorie Mitts of Newberg, Clara Poole of Eugene and Peggy Pasley of Antioch, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren and 30 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Tuesday at Newberg Church of Christ with Pastors Walt Sanderson and Kevin Kopsa officiating along with Jim Boyd. Graveside service with interment will be held Friday at the Galt-Arno cemetery in Galt, Calif.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Cascade College in Portland in care of Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel, 207 Villa Road, Newberg, OR 97132.

Michael D. Hervey
Michael David Hervey of Newberg died March 6, 2002. He was 56.
He was born June 11, 1945, to Alvin and Goldie (Castor) Hervey in Modesto, Calif. He graduated from Hillsboro High School, worked at Tektronix for 28 years in the maintenance department and spent six years at Friendsview Manor. He married Delores Olson in November 1971. He enjoyed golfing, woodworking and playing with his grandchildren, family members said, and was a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: wife Delores of Newberg; son Brian of Newberg; daughter Shari Maxwell of Canby; brothers, Robert of Modesto, Calif., and Charles of Aloha; sisters, Betty Azevedo of Fresno, Calif., Lois Miler of Colorado Springs, Colo., Mary Covey of Longmeadow, Mass., and Doris Delpozo of Phoenix, Ariz.; two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A private service following cremation was held.

Ida B. Huffman
Ida Bell Huffman of Newberg died March 11, 2002 at home. She was 75.
She was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Folgohachia, Ark. She was married to Bill Huffman for 47 years. The couple moved to Grants Pass in 1975 from California. Her husband preceded her in death in 1987. On May 18, 1997, she married Paul Huffman in Reno. She worked at the Junction Inn in Cave Junction for two years. She attended Manna Fellowship Baptist Church for the last three years and enjoyed yard sales, gardening and plants.
Survivors include: husband Paul of Newberg; daughters, Marjorie Parker and Betty Webb of Grants Pass, Barbara Howell and Darlene Mosier of Cave Junction and Pamela Poteete of Newberg; sons, Hershel of Newberg, Carroll of Cave Junction, David of Grants Pass and John of Crescent City, Calif.; sister Amy Edwards of Sacramento; brothers, James Sowell, Claude Campbell, Billy Campbell, Uyles Sowell and Charles Sowell, all of Arkansas; 30 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Charles in 1945, daughter Shirley in 1959 and son Alvin in 1993.
A graveside service was held Thursday at Laurel cemetery in Cave Junction.

Juan Cervantes
Newberg resident Juan Cervantes died March 11, 2002, at a Salem hospital. He was 55.
He was born April 10, 1946, in Santa Rita, Jalisco, Mexico, to Juan and Carmen (Ochoa) Cervantes. He married Eva Acero in August 1968 in Santa Rita where he worked as a farmer. In 1975, the couple moved to Mexico City, where he owned a market. He also worked in the almond orchards as a seasonal worker in Avenal, Calif., for several years. In 1994, the couple moved to Tigard where he worked as a restaurant worker at a Sizzlers Restaurant. He also worked at the Olive Garden Restaurant for a few months in 2001. He was a member of the Newberg Hispanic Friends Church. He held Mexican citizenship and was a permanent resident of the U.S.
Survivors include: wife Eva of Newberg; sons, Ismael and Carlos of Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico, Jose Luis and Efrain of Newberg; daughters, Lilia and Gabriela of Newberg and Gloria of Beaverton; brothers, Roberto, Jesus, Jose, Enrique and Ramon, all of Santa Rita, Mexico; sister Antonia of Santa Rita, Mexico; six grandchildren, all of Mexico City; one niece and one nephew.
Services are pending in Mexico. Interment will be at Panteon de Santa Rita in Jalisco, Mexico.

Ruth M. Worley
Ruth Mary Worley died March 5, 2002 at home. She was 81.
She was born Jan. 20, 1921, in Neosho, Mo., to Melvin and Goldie (York) Reed. She was raised and attended school in Neosho. On March 20, 1939, she married Lee Cutburth in Neosho. He died in an accident in March of 1940. In December of 1941 she married George Worley. They lived in Neosho until moving to the Hopewell-Dayton area in 1945. They made their home in Dayton and she worked for the Stayton Cannery in food processing for more than 12 years.
Survivors include: sons, Lee Cutburth of McMinnville and George "Dick" Worley of Lafayette; daughters, Patricia Tolett and Clara Worley of McMinnville; sister Rachael McCarty of Dayton; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband, Lee Cutburth in 1940 and husband George Worley in June of 1992.
Private services will be held by the family at a later date. Arrangements are in care of Attrells Newberg Funeral Chapel.

Marjorie F. Seefeld
Marjorie Fern Seefeld, a former Newberg resident, died March 3, 2002 at Puget Sound Care Center in Olympia, Wash. She was 78.
She was born Aug. 2, 1923. Her maiden name was Haislip. She married Murril Seefeld in her parents home on January 17, 1942. After living in Portales, N.M., and the cities of Drain, Roseburg, Milton-Freewater and Beaverton, the couple moved to Newberg in 1959. They later helped start the Chehalem Valley Baptist Church where they became charter members and remained until 1995 when they moved to Lacey, Wash., with their daughter Sandy.
She enjoyed traveling and family recreation, reading and crocheting. She worked in nursing homes as a care giver and then worked for many years as a home health care provider where she helped many prepare for their death. According to her family, she loved serving God, people and her family.
Survivors include: son Thomas of Olympia, Wash.; daughters, Barbara (Bobbie) Arndt of Hillsboro and Paulette (Sandy) Seefeld of DuPont, Wash.; sisters, Ida Whitworth, Nelle Hardt, Tommie Bennett of New Mexico and Wanda Sturman of Texas; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held Friday at the First Baptist Church in Lacey, Wash. A second memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. today (Saturday) at Attrells Newberg Chapel. Committal is private at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.

Evelyn G. Lewis
Evelyn Gertrude Lewis died March 3, 2002, in La Pine of a heart attack. She was 75.
She was born April 17, 1926, in Tacoma, Wash. Her maiden name was Haight. She was a checker at Safeway in North Bend and retired in 1988. On March 11, 1962, she married Archie Lewis in Stevenson, Wash. In 1988 she moved to La Pine.
Survivors include: husband Archie of La Pine; sons, Terry Metz of Tigard, Mark Lewis of Rustin, La.; sisters, Joyce Neil of Newberg, Francie Peterson of La Pine, Gloria Storment of Newberg; brothers Ira of Drayton Valley, Alberta, Canada, Ralph of Pacific Palacades, Calif., Les of Newberg; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice, care of Central Pines Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1530, La Pine, OR 97739.

Neville L. Van Dolah
Neville L. Van Dolah died March 5, 2002, at a Tigard care facility. He was 90.
He was born Nov. 3, 1911, in Cheyenne, Wyo., to Fred and Carrie (Perry) Van Dolah. He moved with his parents to Battleground, Wash., where he attended grade school and then graduated from Fort Vancouver High School.
On July 3, 1932, he was married to Frances Heick in Vancouver, Wash. After working with his family on the farm for several years, they moved to Oakland, Calif. around 1934. He was employed as a sales representative for Lucky Stores until 1946 when they moved back to Portland. He sold real estate with his father until 1949 when they moved to Sherwood. He operated Vans Meat Market until 1958 and then continued selling real estate until his retirement in 1971.
He was a member of the Sherwood United Methodist Church, was past Master of the Sherwood Masonic Lodge, I.O.O.F., Eastern Star and the Rebekah Lodges. He was Mayor of Sherwood from 1954 to 1960 and was a charter member and founder of the Sherwood Chamber of Commerce. In 1957, he received the First Citizens Award.
Survivors include: sons, Ron of Vanderhoof, B.C., Canada and John of Milwaukie; daughter Linda Duncan of Beaverton; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. March 13 in Attrells Sherwood Chapel with Eric Brown officiating. Committal is private at Riverview Abbey. Chapel viewing and visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
